AN EPISODE A DAY UNTIL SEASON 3 → 2x07 – The Field Trip

i did a binge of hsmtmts s1 to s4, and it really struck me how much i missed having the school musical as the that held all the plots together

in s1 all of the characters are motivated by that musical. Ricky and Nini getting cast as the leads and it means a lot to them because its first time anybody has believed in them. Gina and Ej dont get the leads and it hurts their egos. we get to watch all of the kids bond over the musical, and when miss Jen is going to be fired all of the drama club do a performance to save her.

in s2 they have the menkies, where the club feel the pressure to beat North High who is actively sabotaging them. getting cast as Belle makes Ashlyn insecure, Gina choreographing with Carlos causes tension between them, and Ricky wanting Nini to be the show makes them fight. in end they don’t open the results because they only cared that they put on a good show

in s3 the doc adds pressure on them. getting cast as the lead makes Kourtney confront her anxiety, getting cast as ensemble sends Ashlyn into an identity crisis, Ej having to direct the show puts a rift between him and Gina. rehearsals and the doc puts characters in situations that move their story forward. in the end they all came together to say forget the doc because putting on the best show was more important to them

in s4 all of the characters are in separate plots with nothing holding them together. Rina are in a generic Romeo + Juliet/star is born story, Kourtney has the mandatory college storyline, and Ashlyn and Carlos get B plot relationship drama. all of the stories feel disconnected because none of them really relate to each other. there was literally no narrative reason for any characters to be extras in the films, they were just props in the back (even Ricky, because he was only there to react to filming in jealously or awe). the only character that talks about the musical is Ricky (and Gina), and we only saw one rehearsal

and like… all of that is fine, but they found their magnum opus in s3. the pacing was better and the dramatic irony had great pay-offs, the themes, the balancing of storylines and characters was infinitely better (it’s shocking how downgraded Ashlyn was in s4) and it had a shorter runtime. this season wasn’t about high school kids putting on a musical. with the exception of Kourtney and miss Jen this seasons not really about high school. a part that of me really missed watching a group of kids grow together through the school year while they put on a musical (especially if their ‘senior’ year😭)

I’m so sick of Rinas pretending EJ is a bad guy and only nice to his girlfriends when he’s been so supportive and helpful the whole show from complimenting Kourtney’s intersectional feminism in the pilot to telling Carlos he stepped up in 1 x 8 to genuinely asking if Ricky was ok on opening night when he asked him to play Troy. This is continued in season 2 when he makes a whole video tribute to Carlos, offers to spin the tables to help out Ricky’s transformation in 2 x 12, helping Big Red calm down before the dance battle and guiding Kourtney away from a north high kid fight in the dance battle in 2 x 7, and doing the Cal tech favor for Mazzara. And despite Rinas saying only Ricky and Gina welcomed the outsiders, EJ literally hugged Maddox and grinned at her sounding the bugle and he introduced himself to Jet, gave him space when he didn’t want to talk and then told him no one was judging him when he showed up late to auditions. Also Rinas saying he never asks or cares about how Gina is feeling except in 2 x 5 is literally not true when he checked up on her right after season 1 opening night to make sure she was ok and knew how appreciated she was not just by him but by the whole drama club (as opposed to Ricky throwing her under the bus in 1 x 5 saying everyone, not just him, thinks she’s too ambitious for her own good and everyone else’s.) EJ has always been a good guy who does the wrong things for the right reasons and Gina has said this to him directly that he’s someone who tries really hard to do the right thing and a really good guy. As for his past, he took the fall for it with his Instagram confessionals that cost him followers and leads to him apologizing to everyone he’s wronged (esp Nini and Emily Pratt) but also he still regrets it in 2 x 8 in the couch scene so to pretend he hasn’t had incredible character growth is completely contradicted by the literal show canon and Rinas can ship Rina all they want, I just don’t know why they can’t do it without slandering EJ Caswell. Also for the making her cry claim, just as Ricky didn’t know he made Gina cry except in the 2 x 6 flashback, EJ had literally no way of knowing Gina cried over him canceling their date so for Rinas to passionately defend Ricky for the same thing they vilify EJ for is very odd.

why do gicky shippers pretend like ricky accepted gina's ambitiousness? he called her out on it in the homecoming episode in season one. "i sorta thought you were classier than this but, hey, maybe you really are what people say you are... just a little too ambitious for your own good... or anyone else's." straight out of the script. in season two, when nini tells gina, "you have this energy about you that is so," and gina says, "off putting." she probably remembered what ricky said to her at hoco and just the way he treated her throughout the season, it didn't help. HSMTMTS Season 1-3

Ok, honestly I enjoyed this more than I should have…I was sceptical in the beginning and I mean very sceptical but I wanted to know what all the fuss was about so I watched it and well… it became my whole personality in the past few weeks.

"Finally Free” is my new favourite song, Gina is my new role model and "Gotcha Head in the Game” why new motto!

But let's start with the beginning because it took me a little to get here…soooo if you have read any of my past posts you know I absolutely love Joshua and his music. I am totally on his side in all that Olivia drama (even though I also love Olivia’s music) and yes I'm fully aware that the offscreen drama has nothing to do with the show but I can’t help but draw some connections I'm sorry...

Alright so season 1 wasn’t my favourite, yes I enjoyed it and I cried at the end but seasons 2 and 3 were absolutely amazing, they were soooo much better! I totally shipped Ricky and Nini I was all there for them even though, Ricky is kind of annoying sometimes and he freaks me out with his indecision and his moping around all the time but on some level, I do get him. Nini on the other hand…well I didn’t quite like her she just annoyed me with her going away and coming back and all that and there was also something about her that kept me from fully liking/connecting with her. Now please don’t come for me but I don’t buy that Olivia wasn’t around that much in season 3 because of the tour, I think that she just didn’t wanted to be on the show anymore because she got where she wanted to be and she doesn’t need it anymore. Please don’t get mad at me but I am kind of happy she left the show …again I totally shipped her with Ricky they made sense together all the history and all and I cried when they broke up in the treehouse (by the way that episode is one of my favourites) the breakup felt soooo real I'm almost sure there wasn’t that much acting in that scene. Oh and I also cried when she came to the opening night in season 3 and talked to Kourtney and the cards OMG and of course the lottery ticket for Ricky…it made me so emotional and yes I would have liked for her to stay but on the other hand, I think its better that way. I just feel sorry for her friends, especially Kourtney!

Wow I said I was going to start with the beginning but here I am talking all over the place… so if I already did it I might as well keep on going soooo let's move on with my favourite ship of the show, the ship that unfortunately didn’t survive and I'm very very upset about it!!!! EJ and Gina!!!! Those two OMG their relationship in season 2 was everything for me! I didn’t like EJ in season 1 but season 2 EJ was my everything. It's the same with Gina I didn't quite like her in the beginning but now I love her so much she just motivates and inspires me to give my best in everything and ahhh I was soooo happy when they finally got together they matched so well! Yes of course I understand why they broke up and Gina had her point but still I’m so sad that they broke up I really really hope that  EJ will at least be in season 4, I need him there, he has to be there he just has to! And yes Gina and Ricky make sense but I'm forever and ever Team Gina and EJ no matter what!

OHHHH and I love Kourtney sooo much, I love her attitude and that she is into fashion and I relate so much with her! I love how they address mental health in this show and Kourtney’s anxiety…. I could relate so much! I love her friendship with Giana and Ashylin there are so great together and I love how they support and help each other up, it’s so beautiful! And Carlos omg I love him too his adorable!

Oh and of course, another favourite of mine is Miss Jenn of course, I love her she is the best! I love how she cheers them up and OMG when she came to camp to help EJ and ohhh her talks with Nini! Why don’t teachers like her exist in real life? OOOHHH and most importantly can she please get together with the robotics teacher what’s his name...Benjamin right, I like them together and they make way more sense than she and Ricky’s dad!

Now let’s talk about my favourite songs I loveeeee "Finally Free” as I said in the beginning but I also adore "1-2-3” and „Different Way to Dance” oh and of course "What do you know about love"!

By the way can we please talk about the guest stars OMG like Chad and Rayen!!! And Jackson from Hannah Montana and Mitchel from Modern Family!!! I love the troughbacks in this show, they brought up so many things from my Disney childhood and I loved the Camp Rock vibes in season 3! It's so nice that they bring up and honour the shows that we 2000s kids grew up with!

Omg the reality show episode in season 3 was also one of my favourites it was so funny (ohh another absolutely hilarious moment was Ricky performing "Bet on it”!), and episode 8 from season 2 is also one of my absolute favourites, as I mentioned before because it made me so emotional! As for my favourite season, I can’t quite decide between season 2 and season 3 they were both equally amazing!

I feel empty now that I am done watching all episodes, I need more! I can’t wait for season 4! And God, please let EJ be there!!! I know it’s a silly hope because it’s probably not going to happen but ahhh I wand EJ and Gina to get back together! They are my favouriteee!!! But the only thing there is left to say is: I trust the process! So what comes will come but let's hope it comes soon!

Best TV show ever (Real). Literally need to rewatch it because it's so good!

Gina Porter as Rapunzel: She is such a Rapunzel. Gina has such a heart of gold and is so fiercely loyal to those around her. Also, imagine her singing The Girl Who Has Everything??? Omg??? This is her role.

Ricky Bowen as Eugene FitzHerbert: Ricky is such a Eugene. He's hilarious, charming, wins over everyone's hearts, and is such a supportive boyfriend like Eugene is to Rapunzel. Also, the chemistry between him and Gina would be INSANE.

Ashlyn Caswell as Cassandra: Yes, this may seem like an unexpected choice, but I think Ashlyn would be incredible as Cassandra. She can be snarky, witty and sarcastic on the outside, but deeply cares about the ones she loves on the inside. The bickering between her and Ricky would kill me too.

Seb Matthew-Smith as Varian: LITERALLY THE MOST PRECIOUS CHARACTERS IN THE WORLD. Seb is such a Varian and I am not just saying this because Varian was voiced by Jeremy Jordan... who also originated Jack Kelly in Newsies, but Seb would nail the misunderstood antagonist who redeems himself in S3. IMAGINE HIM SINGING LET ME MAKE YOU PROUD? NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE WITH ASHLYN? READY AS I'LL EVER BE? TRUST ME ON THIS, OKAY?

Jet as Lance Strongbow: Lance was hard to cast but I ultimately went with Jet. This is because just like Lance, Jet did come off as arrogant at first but once his walls were torn down, he was easygoing and a true softie at heart. Also, the bond between him and Ricky would be immaculate.

Mr. Mazzara and Miss Jenn as King Frederic and Queen Adrianna: The true parents of HSMTMTS. These two just care about their wildcat children deeply, just like how Adrianna and Frederic care about Rapunzel.

Emmy and Alex as Keira (Angry) and Catalina (Red): The youngest on HSMTMTS will be playing the children on TTS. Their bond would just be so pure just like how they played Young Elsa and Young Anna in Frozen.

Lily as Zhan Tiri: Do I even need to explain? DO I EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN? LILY IS ZHAN TIRI PERIOD.

Antoine/Andy as Andrew: Shady boys who appear charming at first but are actually deceitful and have ulterior intentions. Listen, I know that Antoine/Andy is now "redeemed", but he's playing Andrew no matter what.

EJ Caswell as The Captain of the Guards: Beefing with Ricky just like how the Captain beefs with Eugene. He also gets to play Ashlyn's dad and he would LOVE getting to boss her around.

Big Red as Shorty: Clueless kings who are supportive to the ones they love and are quite loyal... we don't talk about S4 Big Red, okay? My man is loyal and not whatever they did to him in S4.

Kourtney Greene as Adira: I didn't know what to do with her, but she does have that fierceness that Adira has.

Maddox as Vex (S2): The no-nonsense attitude that Vex has reminds me of Maddox, especially regarding Maddox's attitude towards following the rules and stage management.

Carlos Rodriguez as Xavier: I don't really know anyone for Carlos. Maybe he would be a great Eugene?

Might drop my Criminal Minds cast list next, then Ride the Cyclone.

yes yes yes ofc i was just getting sooo angry while writing my last post that i decided to leave it where it was lololol

(also the more I wrote this the more i realized I either literally am Kourtney or I just project onto her a lot. lol. lmao. sorry about that but this is MY version of hsmtmts after all. and i added a keep reading cause this got fucking long goddamn)

so we've been told but not really shown that Kourtney, Ricky, Nini, and Big Red have been friends since grade school and then Ricky and Nini's dating and subsequent breakup split them apart, and im a sucker for childhood friendships, so i really want to lean into that

in addition to the inherent heart rate increase of anyone with anxiety (or at least, in my experience with GAD), Kourtney has a lot to be worried about over the summer. My childhood best friend and I clung to each other in anxiety-related situations a LOT, so I can really relate to Kourtney and Nini from that standpoint. So first of all, she's without Nini and Michelle, the two most important people in her life, and also the two people who have dealt with her Kourtney-ism the most in the past year. Big Red and Ricky used to be good at all that, but then the Big Bad Summer of 2019 happened and she just hasn't been as close to them, y'know?

She's never been one for romance. Nini was always the desirable one, she was fine to be the one in the background, the funny best friend who gave all of Nini's suitors the shovel talk, and now she's got Howie and they call each other boyfriend and girlfriend- they're not gonna see each other for two weeks. In my version, Howie isn't just randomly a senior even tho he was a junior in s2- he's away doing a residency at a professional theatre. She doesn't get to talk to him a lot, because he's super busy, but she's sure that things between them are just fine. Right? He'd never forget about her like that. Right? A song can mean everything. Isn't that what Ricky always said? But she knows all too well how that ended for him and Nini...

And then she learns that the performance is going to be filmed and put on Disney+, something that millions of people watch every day! She's going to be everywhere- and then she learns that she's going to be everywhere as ELSA! The first black Elsa on TV! She, Kourtney Greene, the Ultimate Best Friend, is going to be front and center in the iconic sparkly blue dress and singing one of the most legendary Disney songs ever...

So yeah, Kourtney has a lot to be nervous about this summer.

Ashlyn and Gina offer their support, but it's notoriously hard for someone with anxiety to open up and allow someone new to be their support system after feeling like they've burdened others for so long with it. So early in rehearsals, she sings the song "Monster". It comes across as a little too real. She leaves.

After letting her have some time by herself, who comes to check up on Kourtney? Ricky! He makes his case. It's been a year. A lot has changed. He knows that things will never be the same but you can't take away eleven years of friendship, and Ricky knows Kourtney well enough to know that something's up. For as long as the group had been together, they'd really just referred to it as her Kourtney-ism and whatnot, but it really doesn't feel right to talk about it that way anymore. RECONCILIATION TIME!!! GIVE ME THESE TWO AS BESTIES, T*M!!!! AAAAAAAA

So, slowly, Kourtney learns to open up to those around her- not just Ricky, but Carlos, and Gina, and Ashlyn, and all of her friends who make it clear that she's not alone. When she gets her Color War phone call, she calls her mom. Tells her that she wants to start seeing a proper therapist. She has a lot of tics, like picking at her nails, so she and Carlos take to repainting their nails together almost nightly- she's not gonna get over it immediately, but her friends do what they can to make her as comfortable as possible. Thus explaining why Carlos and Kourtney had different nails almost every single day at camp lol

So the elephant in the room would be Jet. He's playing Kristoff this time around, remember- just something you might want to keep in mind for later, lol.

So, as a massive massive lesbian, I fell in love with Kourtney pretty much the moment she appeared on my television screen, and Jet, getting to meet her in person, would probably fall even harder. Now, Jet is just... so very unaware of what to do when he actually has a crush, and he'd probably do something like what my autistic ass does whenever I have a crush- MAKE THINGS WEIRD AND SAD

So Jet purposefully avoids most of the people because he does not want to be there. However, he does have a habit of agreeing with Kourtney, hanging around Kourtney, being so so very awkward around Kourtney, like in the Real Campers of Shallow Lake episode but dialed up to eleven.

Ricky, being Kourtney's closest friend at camp and Jet's only friend at camp, notices something is up pretty much right away and considers playing matchy matchy matchmaker before deciding to be an annoying "good friend" instead and slyly mentioning to Jet that he should be open if he has a crush, but also mentioning that if anyone were to ever break Kourtney's heart he'd kill them. This, obviously, does not make Jet feel any better, so while he's trying to get Maddox to trust him again, he starts talking about little sibling things, such as the fact that he has a crush and his big sister might be just the person to help him figure all that out, etc. As their relationship improves over the season, the amount of gentle ribbing about each other's crushes also grows. To the extent where Maddox almost straight up says something about Jet and Kourtney in front of the whole group and Jet nearly dies on the spot.

As he continues to come out of his shell, Kourtney does start to really like Jet- as a friend, at first. Romance just doesn't come first to her mind, really (kourtney is an ace icon wbk, and she's not necessarily aro but somewhere on that spectrum. it's canon cause i say so) and she is more focused on releasing herself from the burdens of her own brain as best she can because she doesn't exactly have access to a therapist or medication yet. But soon, feelings start to arise. The other girls will tease her, and the boys urge Jet to ask Kourtney for a dance at the camp prom, and when he ultimately can't do it, Carlos is the one to say it's okay- he knows you shouldn't push yourself to do things you're not ready for (such as some traditions. it all connects you see, i'm a genius)

It's really easy to just say "if you like them, just go ask them out" to someone who is not dealing with the constant barrage of thoughts that every second you're not asking them out you're wasting your life away but you also can't face the possible embarrassment of being rejected, so you resign yourself to a life of pining from the wings (literally).

So this time around, it's Jet singing Kristoff's Lullaby during the Frozen performance and giving Kourtney meaningful looks, rather than the tired old dragged out love triangle we got in the original season!

So when the doc premiere happens, and everyone is left with the wreckage of what they've been edited to look like, Kourtney has to ask Jet what that meant. His confession couldn't have been edited that much- he said what he said. And Jet owns up to it- he's had a dumb little schoolboy crush on Kourtney since he first laid eyes on her and has only come to fall even harder after learning that she's compassionate, funny, kind, and talented in addition to pretty. And that all he wants is to know if she could ever consider feeling the same.

And Kourtney... doesn't know. She's not used to opening up her heart. She's not used to being desirable- people actually having feelings for her is something she's still having a hard time accepting as possible. Everything has been such a whirlwind since first arriving at camp. And that's exactly what she tells Jet. That she doesn't want to jump headfirst into something despite the fact that there's definitely a part of her that wants to. Jet wants to be mad. He wants to be so angry. But he's also managed to grow up a little bit. So he says that he'll always respect Kourtney, no matter what. But he'll also always love her.

When Kourtney gets home, confusion abounds. She's got enough "real" problems to talk about her therapist with that she doesn't exactly feel like boy problems are the right thing to be taking to them. She heads into work and waiting at the staff door to give her a kiss on the cheek and welcome her home is Howie. Her heart stops. Her brain is full of fog again.
