Herb of the day - hibiscus Woke up feeling very poorly today, sore throat, ear ache, headache which is manifesting into mucus and snotty nose and watery eyes 😩 Feeling sorry for myself. Hibiscus is really high in vitamin C so I have made a pot of tea With it and lemon balm to sooth and ginko biloba for energy and immune boost, some grapevine leaves to help my lymphatic system process the illness more efficiently. Have a mug full of lovely pink tea. I've also added my cough and cold tincture which is yarrow, elderflower and hyssop which are all great for supporting the body when it's poorly. Herb of the day - its a mystery! Suggestions welcome. I ordered a bag of cat nip from the herb shop (I'm based in Spain so maybe it was obviously lost in translation! As this is clearly not cat nip! Which is a grean leafy herb. I'm open to suggestions as to what it is! Not silky enough for corn silk not much of a smell at all. It is a real mystery to me. Herb of the day grape leaf I bought this in the market today as I likes the look of it, red and warming on a cold day. Which is interesting as it promotes circulation so can help warm cold feet by helping the vascular system pump blood. So drinking a tea at the moment This herb is rich in vitamins and minerals. Herb top up from my favorite local supplier. From Green leafy bag is lemon balm or melissa I grow my own and harvested it in the autumn but I have run out and it's too cold at the mo for it to grow (my patch is hiding jusg under the surface of the soil, ready to grow when it gets a bit warmer. Next year I will plant more to esure I don't run out. Tastey in tea a a nice calming herb, helps with pmt. Great on its own or in a blend. Clockwise onto the lighter green large leafy bag it's tila or lime blossom, I have this in my sleepy tea it come from a tree. Help relieve anxiety. Next up a new herb to try - I liked the colour of this and I was told it is from the vine of the grape. Uses were lost in translation so that will be my afternoon's research! I like to buy and try new herbs and often go for ones I like the colour and look of. It can be very interesting that the herbs you are attracted to suit your needs at the time. Yellow bag is calendula or marigolds, I use tons of this herb I grow loads but again I have run out, i am in the process of foraging the wild variety which has smaller flowers. I use this in a lot of my tea blends and mascerate it in olive oils for creams and balms and tincture it in alcohol. It has so many great healing properties from balancing hormones to detoxing the live, anti bacterial and anti fungal. Lastly is orange blossom - uplifting and tastey it's good on grey days and the weather forecast says we are in for rains so thought I'd stock up! I am lucky enough to be surrounded by orange groves so I can forage this. April is forage month for this herb for me, a spring time herb to wash away the darkness of winter. My firsr successful loofah grown feom seed. Loofahs are of the gourd familt and look a bit like cucmbers qhen they are growing. When you leave them to dry out the fibera become a natural sponge. Eco friendly and 100% recyclable. All house holds should use these types of spong and save on the waste of sponges made feom manmade fibers. I only got one this year from 4 seeds but it produced a huge pile of seeds so I will be planting them soon in the hope that I can grow many more and next year be self sufficient in eco sponges. Apple cider vingegar also refered to as acv Acv is an awesome, awesome product with just so many uses from taking internally, to cleaning, to cleansing the skin and much more. I personally use a splash of it in my face cleanser, it helps to balance the skins ph, returning the acidity and restores that acid mantle. It also kills bacteria, removes excess dirt, oil and makeup and dissolves dead skin cells. WOW! I also take it internally it is good for ailments, like a sore throat, a stomach upset, it kills the bacteria that help these viruses spread. I also use a splash in my head lice spritz AND it is great for getting rid of fungus and candida so I use it in my pedicure treatments, a glug into the foot soak and directly onto any nails affected. It helps reduce inflammation and pain in ingrown toe nails also. I put a splash in my animals water bowls this includes the dogs, cats and chickens, keeps their guts healthy and parasites at bay. There are so many health benefits to this vinegar - make sure you have a bottle in you cupboard! I have a bottle with 'mother' for internal and skin and a cheapy, cheap one for cleaning. Oh and don't forget you can use it for cleaning your house, add a good glug to a spritz bottle, with water, and some essentail oils for a nice smelling anti bacterial surface cleaner. Herb of the day Diatomaceous earth is a soft, crumbly, porous sedimentary deposit formed from the fossil remains of diatoms, it contains a high source of silica, which means it has all sorts of benefits for both people and pets and the house and garden! It is a powder and comes in food grade and industrial grade, if you wish to take it internally (it can help flush out toxins and parasites) ensure you buy food grade. As an insectaside the silica removes the waxy outer coating from the insect's exoskeleton. Without this coating, the insect cannot retain water and dies of dehydration. 😱 It is therefore good to use as a powder on dog bedding, carpets, and furniture if your pets are carry fleas, and also directly onto the dogs skin to help keep them at bay. It is advised not to breath this powder in, so use a mask when applying OR place powder into hands and rub into areas rather than shake. You can use it on your veg patch in the same way to keep pest at bay and add nutrients to the soil. I use it in my chicken coop and put it in with their grain, this helps keep internal and external parasites at bay.🐣🐤🐥 Internally it is said to have the following properties: Cleanse the digestive tract. Tatty dog my tenacious terrior, I also have another dog and 2 cats so as an aromatherapist I have to ensure I am fully aware of essential oils that can be harmful to them. When making my products I ensure they are not in the room and wash my hands before I touch them. Safest essential oils to use with dogs Below is a short list of essential oils that experts say are safe to use on dogs. Lavender: Universal oil. Useful in conditioning patients to a safe space. May help allergies, burns, ulcers, insomnia, anxiety, and car sickness, to name a few. Not for use with cats. Cardamom: Diuretic, anti-bacterial, normalizes appetite, colic, coughs, heartburn, and nausea. Chamomile: Anti-inflammatory, non-toxic, gentle and safe to use. Good for skin irritations, allergic reactions, burns. Spearmint: Helps to reduce weight. Good for colic, diarrhea, nausea. Helps balance metabolism, stimulates gallbladder. Not for use with cats. Thyme: Pain relief, good for arthritis and rheumatism. Antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral, excellent for infections and other skin issues. As I stated in a previous post, all animals are different and some maybe more sensitive that others so start off with one or two oils and alway dilute in a carrier oil. A great way to do this is to get a carrier oil like olive oil and add a few drops of your safe essential oil to it. Rub into your hands and then stroke your dog. Areas like their paws and ears are good areas to put the blended oil if you are treating for behavioural or in vernal issues. The smaller your dog the weaker the blend should be. A great blend for joint care and arthritic dogs is thyme, chamomile and lavender, you can massage the blended oil into affected areas. It can also help to calm over active dogs and dogs that suffer from anxiety. Essential oils never to be used with you pets! (The lovely image is borrowed) This is an extensive list of oils to be avoided around pets. As I stated yesterday pets nervous systems, sense of smell and vital organs are much more sensitive than ours. If you wish to use these oils make sure you diffuse in a room away from your pets. As promised here is a list of oils that are SAFE to diffuse around your pets. (The lovely picture is borrowed and not my own work) NB they are safe to diffuse but may not be safe to apply directly to the fur/skin of your pet. When diffusing around your pet it is best not to do so in an enclosed room, and if the oils are only for the benefit of yourself, try to go to a different room. Their systems are much more sensitive than our and an overload of smell can cause toxic reactions. If you want to experiment try starting with one SAFE oil at a time, that way you can see what your pet enjoys and which scents they aren't keen on. 📛📛📛 Whilst the list shown states the oils are safe for your pet, please be aware that every pet is different. If your pet exhibits symptoms like swaying, weakened back legs and general unrest cease using the oils and if symptoms persist seek veterinary help. Essential oil blends can really help nervous pets, skin conditions and to deter fleas, but it is best not to over load them. Diffusing oils are great for highly strung pets, spritz' to de pong their beds, powders blended with oils to keep fleas at bay and help skin conditions.
