I noticed on Box Office Mojo today, amidst the Disney/Marvel release date reshuffling, that a DreamWorks feature was set for January 31, 2025...
And this only per BOM, and no other site. I haven't seen it reported anywhere.
While I had heard off of the Fine Tooning podcast that DreamWorks' post-2021 plans were to do one not-sequel movie and one sequel/franchise entry movie every calendar year, only KUNG FU PANDA 4 held a firm 2024 release date for a long while.
So far, DreamWorks fulfilled this plan in 2022 (w/ THE BAD GUYS and THE LAST WISH), and again this year (w/ RUBY GILLMAN and TROLLS 3), so I assumed that would be the case in 2024. There'd be KUNG FU PANDA 4 in the spring, and then a not-sequel movie maybe some time in the autumn. Universal has their DESPICABLE ME fourquel set for the summer, so I figured, yeah, autumn. Or maybe around Christmastime, and it'd be THE WILD ROBOT.
BOM says the date was originally 9/20/2024, which does line up. DreamWorks initially intended for THE LAST WISH to be a September 2022 release until it slipped away to Christmas, and at one point the BOSS BABY sequel was to be a September 2021 release. I also remember, years back, when the plan was for THE CROODS 2 to be a September 2020 release. COVID-19 and other complications pushed it to around Thanksgiving time, as an experimental theatrical release.
I can't keep up with Universal/DreamWorks' slates and stuff these days. It seems like they're announced somewhere else, but quietly.
Anyways, so far it seems like DreamWorks' slate looks like this:
3/8/2024: KUNG FU PANDA 4
2024: THE WILD ROBOT (per a Cartoon Brew report)
1/31/2025: TBD
2025: SEQUEL
2025: NOT-SEQUEL FILM
2025/26: SHREK 5 (per rumors)
About Cartoon Brew... Around the time of the reports on DreamWorks' impending downsizing and outsourcing of animation production to Sony Imageworks in Vancouver, it was said that DreamWorks had TWO not-sequels (I would say "originals", but anal-retentive keyboard warriors will come after me and "correct" me on that, nyeeeeh THE BAD GUYS was a book, RONAN BOYLE is a book. I'm 31 and I'm tired) set for 2025 in addition to a sequel. And that THE BAD GUYS 2 was likely to be the 2025 sequel.
I still think SHREK 5 comes out in 2026, and that that intern who listed it as a 2025 release merely made a mistake.
I think it'll roll out like this:
3/8/2024: KUNG FU PAND 4
9/??/2024: THE WILD ROBOT
1/31/2025: DOG MAN (outsourced to Mikros)
4/??/2025: RONAN BOYLE (outsourced to Imageworks)
9/??/2025: THE BAD GUYS 2
2026: SHREK 5
But whatever happens, the pieces will all fall into place eventually. Release dates are literally meant to whet the mouths of investors, whether it's conducive to the films themselves or not. Whatever is ready, is ready... And at least we know what's on the horizon. THE WILD ROBOT was given a nice introduction a little while ago, RONAN BOYLE was announced a few years back, and DOG MAN appears to still be on the rails. Looking forward to all three!

Tigress-Subtle Characterization and Growth
At first glance tigress is the stereotypical hardcore, feels nothing, and shuts everyone out character, but upon a further look there is so much revealed through the lengths the writers went through to develop her naturally and subtly.
Tigress does start out cold and no nonsense. She initially is angry at Po for being chosen as the dragon warrior. This is revealed to be due to her relentless pursuit to hone her kung fu skills and impress Shifu. She wasn’t truly mad at Po or want to be the dragon warrior what she wants is to be acknowledged by Shifu. Because Shifu believes that he led Tai Lung down the dark path he took Shifu is emotionally distant from tigress. This leads to her reckless behavior; Punching ironwood trees for twenty years until she felt no physical pain, training non-stop, leaving to face Tai Lung alone. These were all in an attempt to win his affection. She used to live in an orphanage where everyone feared her and said she was a monster. She was in an environment devoid of affection and the first person to ever show her any was Shifu. He trained her and helped her control her strength so that she was no longer feared by the children or caretakers at the orphanage. Shifu ended up adopting her. From a young age all she sought was approval and love and she rarely was shown either. It is through Po that that starts to change.
When the second movie rolls around Po and Tigress are close. This is the direct result of the first movie. Their relationship kickstarts because Po got through Shifu’s tough exterior. Po causes Shifu to change after the events of the first movie. Shifu realized that his tough love mindset may not be the best course of action and that his emotional distance actually hurt those he cared about most. He realized worth wasn’t just from how much kung fu you knew, but what you did with your strengths. This directly effected his relationship with Tigress. He believed it was his show of love and affection that led Tai Lung to grow arrogant and believe that he deserved the dragon scroll and power, but it was his lack of show of pride in what tai Lung had already accomplished. Their relationship became more open and more like that of a father and daughter than teacher and student. In the credits of the first movie there are scenes of Tigress and Shifu joking around. This large step in Tigress and Shifu’s relationship causes a shift in Po and Tigress’s relationship as well. Tigress now has no ill will towards Po because she now has Shifu’s approval, so now their relationship can progress.
A lot of Tigress and Po’s relationship growth is due to their shared circumstances. Tigress understands Po’s struggle with identity in the face of his newly discovered past. She was the kid with no family and no identity and much of her inner struggle has been centered around that. It is through this connection that Tigress was the ideal member of the furious five to support and sympathize with him throughout the second movie. Po believes that he needs to hide this beneath the surface and that it shouldn’t bother him. Ironically it’s Tigress, the one who hides her pain behind a self made wall, that reaches out to him and tells him it’s okay to feel pain and starts to lower her walls as well as his.
Tigress is a character of action and that is seen clearly through the animation. Most of this development is seen not outright said. If you were to remove the sound from any of her scenes be it when she told Po the story of Tai Lung and part of her past is seen, when she talks with Po on the boat, or the fight and subsequent hug in gongmen jail, you can still understand the emotions this character is conveying and not truly lose anything from the character. This is a strong point in characterization especially in an animated movie. The great sound and voice acting help though.
All of this development was brought about by the thought the writers put into the character and her backstory as well as fantastic animation. Even the end credit pictures help move the character forward to where she ends up. I think this is a testament to the care the creators have for these characters. Where they are able to make characters who feel real and relatable through subtleties such as an expression or inflection of the voice. This helps Kung Fu Panda be one of my all time favorite animated trilogies.

*kicks down the door* Hi yes I've been dying for a post like this
Over the Hedge - Ft. Found family who genuinely love and care for each other, smooth talking roguish vagabond, kinda gives off thief family vibes, no unnecessary romantic subplots between main characters
Rango - Its so Western, like dirty gritty kind it actually was and not all dressed up to look pretty, disabled characters that arent made fun of or treated any different than others, a mystery that actually had me guessing throughout the entire movie
Robots - Found family that loves each other and loves to annoy each other, talented small town kid going to big city to follow his dreams trope, hnnngg point off cause it does have a forced romantic subplot that was literally shoehorned in, the domino scene
Lion King 1 1/2 - Its the Lion King BUT Timone's story and version of events and it's hilarious, Features a tiredTM Timone trying to raise a demon of a lion cub, how timone and pumba met and became friends, theres a karaoke version of hakuna matata in it
Sing - Amazing soundtrack not gonna lie, literally the best characters all with their own motivations and stories including a bastard Frank Sinatra mouse, it was advertised as a show about a singing contest but that's only loosely what it's about, it has the opposite of a romantic subplot??? As in Ash realizing her bf doesnt care about her and throws him out??? How many animation movies do that???!!! I could talk about this movie all day. Also features a found family trope
Megamind
Flushed Away - That old claymation type of movie but it looks really good, rich but lonely guy getting thrown to the streets and learns a lesson trope, it somehow gives off both pirate and mafia vibes and I dont know how but its definitely intresting
Song of the Sea - Literally beautiful?!?!?! Like ohmygosh just watch this movie for the animation and you wont be disappointed, the soundtrack? Enchanting. The characters? I love every single one. It's so heartfelt and theres a ton of really subtle symbolism to the Irish mythology it's based on and I just LOVE this movie
Kung Fu Pand 1, 2, & 3 - No really all three of them are amazing, the best fight scenes ever, found family trope especially in the 2nd and 3rd movies, you know the backstories for each bad guy and that's amazing actually? Cause it doesnt take away from the main story at all, and every bad guy is given the chance to stop what they're doing cause the characters actually understand them and I love it, no romantic subplots in any of the movies, okay but Po is literally everyone who has ever dreamed of being a kung fu master. Literally the best movies for body positivity
Megamind
Disney's Atlantis - My FAVORITE disney movie EVER. Gorgeous glowy things?!?!? Milo is a true adventurer who loves and respects history and cultures other than his own. Kida is wicked smart and kickass and tbh I probably had a crush on her when I was little. It's about ATLANTIS how can you not watch it?!??!
Boxtrolls - Okay it's a lot more silly than other Laika movies but that doesnt make it any less good. If you can remember while watching it that everything Laika creates is done by hand you will be utterly blown away by this movie. Adoptive family vibes with a whole finding where you came from while not dismissing how you were raised. I'm saying no RSP and while some might argue with I'm standing by that.
Leap - Listen, listen, I love found family tropes okay? And I can usually only find it in fanfiction. So I tend to get a little sentimental when I actually find it in a movie. An orphanage that's not depicted as horrifically awful, kids chasing their dreams and actually working to make them happen, reminds me of my ballet days and hits hard in the nostalgia. Is this a disney movie? I have no idea but it feels like Pixar
Talking about some movies already listed up there:
Bolt - Found family trope. Its a funny movie with a lot of heartfelt sentiment that will just hit any pet owner right in the feels. Did I ever mention I have a fondness of movies with no romantic subplots? Cause I do. Rhino the Hamster was the best character in the whole movie.
Paranorman - Witches? Ghosts? Zombies? Psychic kids who can talk to ghosts and zombies and sometimes sorta see the future? What more could you want? Maybe an allegory to being 'different' *cough-lgbt+-cough* in a small town where its frowned upon and how you can learn to accept yourself and take pride in who you are despite what others say about you. Also I dont consider this movie to have a RSP cause the guy Courtney is constantly flirting with is so freaking dumb, oblivious, and gay that he doesnt even realize hes being flirted with
Kubo and the Two Strings - !!!!!!!!! Best. Laika moive. EVER. The story catches your attention litterally with the first sentence and it's so hard to look away. The mythology is so good?!?!? The family relationships are so intresting and diverse. Is it a romantic subplot if the two characters are already married but dont its each other? This movie will break your heart and you'll say thank you.
I really freaking love Laika movies
9 - Holy shit what can I say about this movie that would actually do it justice?!?!?! The scenery, the story, the characters, the lore.... and it really doesnt have a lot of dialog at all. The first ten or fifteen minutes of the movie barely even had sound. Is it found family if there's literally only nine of you left in the world? Genuinely creepy but somehow doesnt give you nightmares. Probably.
Megamind
Okay but I love animation and movies and would be happy to scream about them at any time just send me an ask. I will scream about all these movies and more
Animated movies that were good but died after their initial release:
Bolt
Megamind
Wreck It Ralph (look i know it has a sequel but compared to stuff like Frozen and Moana people stopped talking about it pretty quick)
Open Season
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
Paranorman
Kubo and the Two Strings?
Basically any Laika movie other than Coraline
Megamind
9
Puss in Boots
Megamind
Megamind
Megamind

Inner Peace
When I was in my 3rd year of high school, I had this teacher. His name was Randy. Sir Randy Punzalan. He kept going on and on about Kung Fu Panda 2 -- he said we should watch it because it had great life lessons. He enjoyed watching it with his wife, especially with his son. It wasn't a requirement for the subject he was teaching. The movie was just that good, and he wanted to share it with us.
Being a depressed 3rd year student, I payed no mind to it. I didn't watch it at that time because I wasn't that big of a Kung Fu Panda fan, and I was going through a few of my own problems. I didn't give watching the movie a thought at all. I thought I was better than the movie, and didn't need a lesson in life.
- Now, after watching it, I feel less stressed. I feel less depressed.A movie about accepting the bad things. Finding inner peace.I now linger less on sad memories and bad decisions. "Your story may not have such a happy beginning, but that doesn't make you who you are. It is the rest of your story, who you choose to be." -Soothsayer -
A very late thank you, sir. You're not my friend on any social media and I don't have any way to contact you, so I can't tag you. Thank you, sir. :)

IN SEASON: Kung Fu Panda 2
Tumblr media
KUNG FU PANDA Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson Rated PG 3.5 STARS
Now that the roly-poly panda Po has succeeded in corralling his runaway girth and become the Dragon Warrior, some of the goofy charm of the first Kung Fu Panda movie has gone.
It has been replaced by a hardcore action aesthetic, with first-time director Jennifer Yuh Nelson conjuring some of the most beautifully realised thrills and spills ever in an animated feature.
Indeed, the whole film is a visual stunner, a clever blend of traditional Chinese iconography and the eye-popping texture and grandeur of 3-D computer animation.
If only Yuh Nelson had given a little more weight to Po’s search for his true identity (the heart of the story) then Kung Fu Panda 2 might have achieved a measure of the emotional weight of Pixar at its best (not Cars 2).
But Jack Black as Po keeps things bouncing along, nailing the stream of jokes we have come to expect from DreamWorks toons. MARK NAGLAZAS
