Ladj Ly adaptera l’histoire extraordinaire et peu connue de Thomas Alexandre Davy de La Pailleterie Dumas, esclave né en 1762 dans les Caraïbes qui, contre toute attente, est devenu Général de l’armée française sous la Révolution et dont le fils est l’un des écrivains les plus célèbres au monde : Alexandre Dumas. [...] DUMAS – DIABLE NOIR est une adaptation libre de la bande dessinée Le Premier Dumas créée par Salva Rubio et Ruben del Rincón et publiée par Glénat. Cette saga épique raconte l’histoire vraie exceptionnelle d’un esclave caribéen qui est devenu une figure légendaire de l’histoire française. Né à Saint-Domingue (aujourd’hui Haïti) en 1762 dans un milieu modeste, Thomas, le futur « Général Dumas », est devenu un héros de la Révolution française et un fervent défenseur des droits de l’Homme. D’un tempérament inébranlable, le général Dumas s’est lancé dans une audacieuse carrière militaire et a notamment servi sous les ordres de Napoléon Bonaparte, jusqu’à ce que leurs chemins divergent... The intense social drama follows a young woman (newcomer Anta Diaw) deeply involved in the life of her community, who discovers the redevelopment plan for her neighborhood calling for the demolition of the block where she grew up and led behind closed doors by a young doctor thrust into the role of mayor (Les Misérables’ co-writer and star Alexis Manenti). Together with the inhabitants of the building, she embarks on a fierce battle to prevent the destruction of their home.

The film is Ly’s follow-up to Oscar and Bafta-nominated and Cannes Jury Prize-winning 'Les Misérables'.

271 - Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Patreon Selects)

Our Patreon Selects episodes continue this week with a pick from Audrey: the beloved 2019 lesbian romance Portrait of a Lady on Fire. The film launched at the Cannes Film Festival, winning the Best Screenplay prize and skyrocketing director Céline Sciamma to the names of most beloved contemporary directors. However, when the Oscar race began, France instead chose to submit Ladj Ly's Les Misérables for the International Feature race. Sciamma's film still gained feverish fandom on the fall festival circuit and even more critical raves, but ultimately distributor Neon focused its awards campaign energies on fanning the flames of the Parasite moment.

This episode, we talk about the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and Portrait's delayed platform release that got abbreviated by COVID.
