Magdalena first heard the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice performed as an opera while attending the wedding of Henry IV of France and Marie de Medici at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. It’s remained her favourite opera.

She so often thinks of Eurydice bitten by the venomous snake and Orpheus’ inconsolable weeping over the death of his bride that she sometimes lays down on the cold mausoleum floor and feigns a mortal death for days on end...
