The bad:

Wolfsong by TJ Klune: No thanks! Maybe the worst thing I’ve read all year!

The Regional Office is Under Attack! by Manuel Gonzales: felt like I was missing half a book. Why was the office under attack? Idk! What did the office do? Unclear!

The fine: Work for It by Talia Hibbert: one of the better romance writers IMO, but most of the romances I read are, at best, just okay! I’m not sure what it would take to push it to “great” status for me. Someone recommend a romance they think was great and I’ll give it a try.

Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon: pls see above. I did laugh out loud during one scene, and also loved that one of the characters was on a show that’s not Teen Wolf but is Teen Wolf.

Serious Concerns by Wendy Cope: ok why did I think her poetry was very serious and heartfelt this bitch is GOOFY and I really enjoyed it. It felt very of its time but in a good way. Would pair well with When Harry Met Sally, or anything by Carrie Fisher.

The Green Knight, translated by Bernard O’Donoghue: fun and more of a literary read than Sweeney Astray, which is similarly an old tale about some guy wandering the countryside. I’m insufferable so I loved this movie and needed to pick up the actual story.

The good/great:

The Best at It by Maulik Pancholy: this was a middle grade book that’s about ~being yourself~ and ~standing up for yourself~ but it was so cute and funny and such a fun read.

When My Brother Was an Aztec by Natalie Diaz: her metaphors are absolutely incredible, as is her imagery. Can’t wait to read her other collection

The Devil’s Element by Dan Egan: mostly picked it up bc I loved Egan’s other book, and this was similarly great! V niche book about the history of phosphorous including its discovery and different ways it’s been mined, and then goes into how excess phosphorous in the water supply has every waterway completely fucked. He does a great job of showing how interconnected these issues are. Side note, poor Floridians have enough to deal with already and now I find out about the shitshow that is Lake Okeechobee?!

Teaching to Transgress by bell hooks: similarly niche, but basically affirmed all of my personal philosophies about what teaching should be, because lately I’ve been questioning if I’m just really naive. It’s geared toward people in higher ed but if you’re an educator in any capacity I really recommend this.

Too Bright to See by Kyle Lukoff: technically for middle schoolers but it still made me absolutely weep with joy. It’s pretty incredible books like this exist now for kids that age, it makes me a lil emotional to think about

Cantoras by Carolina de Robertis: listen. Listen. LISTEN. I tore through this book, it is beautiful and affirming and devastating and I loved every second of it, and I’m planning on reading all of de Robertis’ other books

Currently reading: The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty (so fun!) and The World and All That It Holds by Aleksandar Hemon (confusing so far but I like it!)

Climate of Florida

Florida's climate is indeed quite diverse, with distinct tropical and subtropical regions. Floral City Heritage Council Sponsors First Edition Printing

The Floral City Heritage Council has sponsored the first edition printing of Muriel Eden-Paul's latest historical novel, “Song of Jaybird” - a lost past and forgotten story of Black laborers working in a turpentine camp under debt peonage for the Navel Store industry. Floral City Heritage Council Sponsors First Edition Printing Set in the once active Etna Turpentine Camp located in Citrus County, just east of Sugarmill Woods on the north side of County Road 480, the novel takes place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. <p>KOA Diaries 🏕 Moore Haven pt 2/2 After I left the campgrounds on the Tuesday of my trip, I set off through the countryside, admiring the beautiful crops swaying in the wind—I had never seen that plant before and thought it looked like wheat, but surely I would recognize it if it were? Later that week, I found out it was sugarcane, which totally makes sense in retrospect! 🏕 I had a few missteps throughout the day while trying to find nature spots since most places didn’t exist on Google maps. But it was fun to explore and eventually I found a beautiful hiking trail in the countryside that led through a prairie and a lakeside park with trails and an observation tower that looked out onto the waters that lead to Lake Okeechobee. 🏕 In the actual town of Moore Haven, I admired the architecture of the county courthouse and the quaint small-town feel. It reminded me of the adorable Ohio village that I grew up in. 🏕 With heavy clouds bringing an end to daylight hours sooner than anticipated, I rushed to the last site of my day, which I think was the only item on my itinerary that was listed online and easy to find! The Ortona Indian Mounds Park was a brief stop, as it was fairly small, but it provided some beautiful views of moss-covered trees as well as a few plaques detailing what we know about the prehistoric history of this location. 🏕 Honestly, the only reason I came to this region was because of the KOA. I went into this trip thinking that there wouldn’t be much to do and I could just cross this region off my list. 🏕 However, it just provided a teaser for a future trip. I would like to complete the hiking trails that I discovered, and I would like to bike the 110 mile trail around Lake Okeechobee, which passes through this region. 🏕 P.S. Can you believe I thrifted that true 70s dress for like $5 at @goodwillintl ?! The Post and ProPublica set out to see what the air is like in the Glades during the burns. The reporters analyzed cane burn permits and plume data from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which projected where smoke would travel. They also worked closely with six experts in air-quality and public health from universities across the country, including three in Florida, as well as with residents, to place outdoor air sensors that measured particulate matter. The measurements were not intended to assess compliance with the Clean Air Act. Rather, the goal was to see if residents were being exposed to pollutants in ways that current monitoring systems would miss.

...Tucked between Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades, the land is composed of nutrient-rich black muck, ideal for growing cane. The U.S. government transformed the region at the turn of the 20th century by damming the lake and draining the water at its southern bend, turning the marsh into an agricultural mecca.

U.S. Sugar was the first company to settle in the region, in the 1930s. Florida Crystals followed in the 1960s. The two companies would soon become the largest producers of cane sugar in the country. Today, there are more than 410,000 acres of cane, the largest field crop contained to a single area in the state.

Florida farmers produced 21 million tons of cane sugar in the 2019-2020 harvest season, more than half the nation’s supply. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated the value of Florida’s sugar cane crops at about $648 million in 2019, the most recent year for which data is available.

While the sugar industry brings jobs to the area, the Glades communities remain among the poorest in the state. In fact, in the 1980s, Belle Glade was “so racked by poverty and AIDS that foreign service trainees were sent there to prepare for the Third World,” wrote Michael Grunwald in his book “The Swamp,” a history of the Everglades. Little has changed. Today, the median household income hovers at just above $24,000 — less than half the statewide figure.

The area is home to migrant field workers from Central America and the Caribbean, as well as Black and Hispanic American families who have lived in the Glades for generations. Many rely on the sugar industry for jobs.

Burning the cane is the cheapest method to prepare it for harvest, allowing sugar companies to maximize profits.

The Category 5 Hurricane had winds sustained at 160 MPH and flooding raised the lake waters over 20 feet. Image 04-05: The city was overwhelmed by corpses which had been tangled in debris and washed ashore. Truckloads of coffins navigated the streets. Image 06: In an effort to minimize the spread of disease, the health department urged survivors to burn corpses in mass burials. Image 07: Black migrant workers were the main victims of the flood. Records indicate a mass grave with over 674 workers was dug outside the city’s cemetery; however, the mass grave remained unmarked for 75 years until 2003. Image 08: Several abandoned “Ghost Towns” ,including Okeelanta, can be seen when the water is low enough to reveal seasonal islands. Image 09: When the water is low, thousands of skulls and human remains believed to be between 500-1000 years old can be seen. Several times during the conflict, his daring exploits sparked new life into the allied #Seminole resistance. By 1837, he led the black portion of the uprising in the climactic Battle of Lake Okeechobee. Old Pahokee High School

The Pahokee High School was built in 1928, though it didn't open officially until the 1930-31 school year, due to the extensive devastation to the town and surrounding areas caused by the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane. The school building, which was located less than a block from Lake Okeechobee, survived the storm and 20+ feet of water that flooded the city. Until Belle Glade High School was built in 1941, Pahokee High School was the home of students from Port Mayaca, all the way around Lake Okeechobee and nearby to Clewiston. At the time, Pahokee was the third most populous city in Palm Beach County and shipped produce down canals to the coast. The ornate Mediterranean Revival style architecture and rich history even earned the school building a spot in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, which listed it as the oldest building in Pahokee. The school was closed in 1998 when new school buildings were built directly behind it.
