SALSA Salsa is the world’s most popular Latin dance. It is loved because of it’s music, it’s origins and it’s many dance style’s. Salsa refers to a fusion of informal dance styles having roots in the Caribbean (especially in Cuba and Puerto Rico), Latin and North America. The name “Salsa” is the Spanish word for sauce, connoting (in American Spanish) a spicy flavor.

Salsa is usually a partner dance, although there are recognized solo steps and some forms are danced in groups of couples, with frequent exchanges of partner (Rueda de Casino). Improvisation and social dancing are important elements of Salsa but it appears as a performance dance too.

Rhythm and steps Salsa is danced on a core rhythm that lasts for two measures of four beats each. The basic step in salsa dancing typically uses three steps each measure. This pattern might be quick-quick-slow, taking two beats to gradually transfer the weight, or quick-quick-quick allowing a tap or other embellishment on the vacant beat. It is conventional in salsa dancing for the two musical measures to be considered as one, so the count goes from 1 to 8 over two musical bars.

Salsa styles There are many characteristics that may identify a style. There may be different step patterns, different timing of steps, particular movements on the dance floor, dancer preference of turns and moves, attitude, dress code, and others. The presence of one or more of particular elements does not necessarily define a particular style. For example, many styles can be danced “On One” or one style may be danced “On One” or “On Two”. The following are the major “recognizable” styles.

OTHER DANCE STYLES

Cuban Salsa (Rueda)

Cuban-style salsa, also known as Casino, is popular in many places around the world, including in Europe, Latin America, North America, and even in some countries in the Middle East. Dancing Casino is an expression of popular social culture; Cubans consider casino as part of social and cultural activities centering around their popular music. The name Casino is derived from the Spanish term for the dance halls, “Casinos Deportivos” where a lot of social dancing was done among the better off, white Cubans during the mid-20th century and onward.

Rueda, pronounced (ROO-EH-DAH) this dance form originated in the streets of Cuba, where couples formed a circle and created various moves and patterns involving partner changes. Rueda is normally danced to Cuban style salsa music, which is more dynamic and funky than traditional salsa.

Brazilian Samba – Ladies only

Samba is a lively, rhythmical dance of Brazilian origin in 2/4 time danced under the Samba music. The Brazilian Samba music rhythm has been danced in Brazil since its inception in the late 19th century. Samba is a solo dance that is most often danced impromptu when samba music is played. The basic movement involves a straight body and a bending of one knee at a time. The feet move very slightly – only a fewinches at a time.

Zouk Lambada

Zouk-Lambada (also called Lambada-Zouk or Brazilian Zouk) is a group of closely related dance styles based on or evolved from the lambada dance style and is typically danced to zouk music or other music containing the zouk beat. A slower paced rhythm than Lambada, Zouk is a sensual dance.

Bachata

Bachata is a style of dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. Bachata is a very smooth and sexy dance that is easy to learn. A popular dance that is danced in Salsa clubs. The basics to the dance are three-step with a cuban hip motion, followed by a tap including a hip movement on the 4th beat.

Cha cha cha

With its origin from Cuba, Cha Cha Cha evolved from the Mambo. It is a very popular Street latin dance style because it can be either danced to authentic Cuban music, or Latin Pop or Latin Rock. The music for the international ballroom cha-cha-cha is energetic and with a steady beat. The Cuban cha-cha-cha is more sensual and may involve complex polyrhythms. Characterised by 2 slow steps followed by 3 fast chasses. It became a sensation in the 1950s to dance on the off beat instead of the common down beats.

2018 - What a year!

It has been a while since I have been on tumblr, but what a year!

I am looking out of my hotel window in Ushuaia and looking at the #Gexpedition as she sails into port. It has just been over a year since I was last in Ushuaia doing Antarctic cruises with #Gadventures, and in that time I have packed in more adventures that I have ever done before. In Jan 2018 it started with a pre-tour to #Kruger National Park with great wildlife, including Leopard, before doing 4 Indian Ocean cruises with Noble Caledonia, including Mozambique, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Madagascar, Reunion, Mauritius, Aldabra and the Seychelles. Highlights including seeing Fossa in Madagascar, and great birds on the predator free islands of Cosmoledo and Aride.

Then I had a very active 4 days at Victoria Falls including a bungee jump, a bridge swing, a microlight flight and much more, before doing the Gadventures trip across Botswana and the Okavango Delta, seeing lots of wildlife, with loads of elephants on the Zambesi, and even Black Rhino. Then I did my own thing and hired a car to explore Etosha Park (more wildlife including a friendly but snarling Honey Badger!), the Skeleton Coast, Walvis Bay and the Soussevlei dunes in Namibia. Something I meant to do over 30 years ago, but a car crash got in the way!

Back in the UK I had a bit of rest in April (but also did some bird surveys) before doing three cruises around the British Isles in May with ‘Noble’ with a strong focus on the seabirds, and a surprise to see a Bearded Seal in Lerwick harbour in the Shetlands. Then it was off to the Arctic and Svalbard and the Arctic with ‘G’ with great Polar Bears and curious Walrus turning up everywhere.

Then, in late August and September I did four Kimberley cruises with APT (Australian Pacific Travel) between Broome and Darwin with amazing geology, landscapes, and mangroves, in this remote part of Australia, and loads of crocs. Beforehand I visited the Broome Bird Sanctuary, and afterwards I took almost 2 weeks to explore Western Australia to check out the landscape from Perth to Exmouth, with the chance to also dive and go snorkelling and to swim with sea lions, manta rays, and something I have always wanted to do – swim with Humpback Whales.

Then, for the rest of the year, from the autumn, it was a number of single cruises with time at home between to relax (along with Graham the cat), or to explore. It started with the great landscapes and music of the Cape Verdes on a cruise (and the village of Fogo rebuilding after the recent eruption of the volcano buried the village under larva). Also getting one dive in.

Then it was off to New Zealand for one cruise exploring South Island and North Island, with loads more seabirds, and challenging weather at times, followed by a week exploring Northland, seeing Kiwi, managing to surf standing up (only just!) and some awesome diving at Poor Knights Islands.

Then the year ended with a long Christmas and New Year cruise in the Lesser Antilles, Trinidad, Tobago, the Dutch Antilles, and Columbia. Great birds and great music, dancing to ‘Nutty Dread Christmas’ reggae carols, as well as amazing fireworks at New year on Aruba.  And on our last day in Cartagena danced on a roof top bar overlooking the old city and impressing the Columbians with my dancing.  And when I was at home during the year I got in a lot of zouk, lambada, salsa, Bachata, and ceroc dancing (certainly dancing is the best way to keep fit!).

And before I headed down to Ushuaia, I’ve just had a great week exploring the Pantanal with loads of birds and mammals, including Giant River Otters, Ocelot, and a brief glimpse of a Jaguar (about one year on from seeing Leopard in the Kruger!).

Now looking forward to exploring Antarctic in the later part of the season, hoping for lots of whale encounters, and, of course, lots of curious penguin chicks as they grow up. I’ve never felt more alive or fitter and I feel more like 31 rather than 61!
