The wave of book bans sweeping the US, typically reserved for works of fiction deemed controversial, has hit textbooks used in public schools, marking the next step in Republicans’ war on education. The board of trustees for the Cypress Fairbanks independent school district in Houston voted 6-1 earlier this month to redact certain chapters in science textbooks, including those about vaccines, human growth, diversity and climate change. The motion to remove the chapters was made by the board’s vice-president, Natalie Blasingame, and almost unanimously supported. Blasingame, who has served on the board since 2021, did not give a specific explanation for the decision, but said the subjects go beyond what the state requires to teach and creates “a perception that humans are bad”. Last year, the Republican-controlled state board approved textbooks for the schools’ science curriculums, rejecting several books on climate, so the local school district’s censorship of these textbooks is even more restrictive.

Education experts say the move could have far-reaching consequences, prompting similar decisions to omit information in other subjects, and by public school districts across the country. The board’s decision drew the ire of local parents and education groups. Bryan Henry, a local parent and founder of the non-partisan group Cypress Families for Public Schools, said he was concerned about the precedent this decision sets. “Will trustees at the local school board level be able to just delete chapters about civil rights because they just mentioned the history of same-sex marriage?” Henry, 37, said. “It’s really kind of alarming what this could mean for ideological influence and control over what is taught in schools.” Henry describes Cypress, a sprawling suburb of Houston with a population of nearly 200,000, as an increasingly diverse community with a loud minority of political extremists.

“A lot of Republicans in the Cy-Fair area, who are very conservative but are pro-public education, are having to now grapple with the fact that [the] governor, state representatives – they’re really not pro-public education,” he said. “And so people are struggling with how to reconcile that, because they don’t want to vote for Democrats.” Henry added this “level of oversight, micromanagement and interference” was “scary.” The Texas Freedom to Read Project, an organization that fights book bans, swiftly condemned the decision. “To ban entire chapters of textbooks and withhold that information from students is not only unconstitutional, but it is taking away their access to real-life ideas that exist in this world,” said Laney Hawes, co-founder of the group. “Access to a diverse and wide range of information is what prepares students to navigate this world successfully. When we ban books and limit students’ ability to access ideas, we are closing doors to their futures.”

[...] PEN America found 3,362 instances of individual books banned in public K–12 schools for the 2022-23 academic year – a 33% increase from last year, with Florida and Texas leading the way. These books mostly include novels with themes of race or sexuality, not core academic material.

Meehan said the censorships of textbooks is “a further escalation of this movement”. “Texas is no stranger to book bans or censoring other educational content areas or materials. The idea that we’re redacting chapters from state-approved textbooks is almost unheard of. It’s so outlandish,” Meehan said. Book bans have become a core element of platforms of well funded far-right politicians, who have tried to win a larger presence on school boards across the US. “I’m almost worried about a concerning trend where far-right Republican candidates are replacing moderate Republicans on school boards, not because citizens believe they are better suited for the job, but because rightwing billionaires and Pacs [political action committees] are starting to pour money into these local elections,” said David DeMatthews, an education professor at the University of Texas at Austin, who previously worked as a public school teacher and district administrator.

Public school textbooks are the next battleground item in the right-wing’s dangerous and censorious book-banning crusade in schools.

Butch has chaotic and impossible ideas, he’s smart, but he doesn’t know how to make a plan, or stick to one if somebody isn’t keeping him grounded, and Denver supports Butch’s crazy ideas unconditionally while giving him advice and keeping Butch realistic.

As for BFFS to lovers, I’m not sure! I definitely want to toy around with different types of relationships that the RRB’s have, so DenButch is definitely a possibility!

Game 12 Rundown Sun, June 9 3:00pm EDT Washington @ NY

Starting: WASH: Atkins, Dolson, Edwards, Samuelson, Vanloo (Sykes out with ankle injury, Austin hip recovery) NY: Ionescu, Jones, Laney-Hamilton, Stewart, Thornton (Vandersloot out, Sabally out)

1st Quarter Listen, at this point, I'm here just wanting to see good basketball. Ariel delivers with a high-energy grab off the tip and veteran hesitation on the lay-in to start things off. Vanloo assigned to Sabrina. Edwards going against Stewie. Austin out still. Good look on our second possession but we accidentally kick the ball OB. Sabrina sees her first shot go down for 3. Out of bounds playing good D on both teams early. Stef gets a block on Thornton after Thornton snags the rebound and it's still just 2-3 here. Stewie gets her arms in the lane and steals, but can't make her shot—Thornton quicker than all of us and puts it away. Earl gets 3, we love her seeing it go down early. Being the only returning starter while Shak and Slim get well is a tough role, good thing she's tough. JJ blocks Aaliyah then hits her second three of the night. We've gotten easy looks under the hoop from Dolson though. Sabrina takes advantage of a tiny moment of solitude with a nasty 3. 11-18 Aaliyah Edwards is not afraid of the reverse. Former Mystic Kennedy Burke draws a foul but a Karlie three keeps us close. Shatori gets fancy with it but the cup gives it back. A few NY turnovers and it's still 16-20. Jado comes in energy high and lights up a 3! Yish too strong for Betnijah and an illusive LEAD arrives. Great D by Earl and we get it to Shatori for the easy money jumper. JJ 3 gives NY a 1-point advantage after the 1st. 23-24.

2nd Quarter May the good basketball continue. We finally manage a couple O boards and Stef converts one and-1. Jade sees a lane and takes it, but JJ is always closer than she appears and smacks the ball down. Next possession Jade doesn't shy away from the jumper and makes it. Back-to-back steals and things are fast and animated here—good bb. Great pass from Earl to a cutting Jade and she lays it up. "Does Melbourne stop moving?" asks the commentary team. Our zone D forces a last second shot that doesn't go and we have a chance here to take the lead. Aaliyah gets it done. A few light whistles going against the Stics here. Earl responds to some physical play with a tough bucket. Oh my JJ behind the back bounce pass to Leonie Fiebich for 3. And a steal and runout and if I'm Eric I need to slow things down here. TO at 36-40. 3:33 in the half. Hines-Allen in to body up Jones. JVL going against Stewie…hmm not sure I like that matchup. Foul and reset and JVL two-person game with Yish. JVL a retaliatory behind the back bounce to Yish for the bucket!! Earl hits the deck, misses a three, makes a three, hits the deck again to sell the elbow+face smack from Sabrina and gets the charge call let's gooooo. Apparently we're shooting 58%. That is THE difference tonight so far. Two JVL/Yish pick and rolls don't go and we're tied up at half 45-45.

3rd Quarter NY getting too much flow in this half and we need a chat. Yish with a 3 out of the timeout. Karlie is getting some confusing whistles, she has 5 and has to sit. JVL and Myisha have so much chemistry from their overseas team. Shatori puts up a 3 in the waning seconds of the shot clock and we have gone on an 11-0 run?? The shooting percentage leading the way here. NY just doesn't look as tight on D as other teams have been, perhaps due to back-to-back games tiredness. That little bit of space is helping the shot %. Aaliyah square dancing with Stewie and JJ under the hoop plenty of hooking on both sides. We get the non-shooting foul call but can't complete the JVL-Myisha connection. 14 lead changes so far. Good basketball continues. Aaliyah gets a block but we can't capitalize. No O boards in sight for us. Liberty make a run off a series of DC misses. We get Jade and Stef back onto the floor and Aaliyah finally gets a breather. Jade gets 5 quick points! Massive upside for her today. Same with Fiebich the other way though. Yish hits her response and alters the shot from Stewie on the other end to regain us possession. Earl hits a three .01 seconds too late and we're at 70-72.

4th Quarter Jado to the rack to start the 4th. She has 14. Make that 17. Make it 19! Fiebich and Laney-Hamilton get in on the threes. Pace is up and it is an advantage for NY. We catch another flight from JVL to MHA. JJ has 27 however, and the Liberty lead is 5 with 3:37 to play. We miss a couple opportunities. Ridiculous loose ball foul call that Eric does not challenge despite 2 minutes remaining. Every shot is off. Wow! We come out of a timeout and execute the play perfectly. That has NOT been happening this year. Then we force a turn off great D. 4-pt game with 32 seconds. WE GET THE STEAL ON THE INBOUND PASS and Yish takes it all the way to the rack. 2 pt NY lead, 26 seconds. We foul quickly and the lead grows to just 3. JVL right in Eric's ear at the TO. Samuelson, Hines-Allen, Walker-Kimbrough, Atkins, Melbourne. Melbourne gets the quick layup but we can't seem to foul anyone after and JJ brings the lead back to 3. Eric incensed that a back court 10 second violation wasn't called. We did trap it back there for a long time. 8 seconds left. Jade takes the three…and it rims out. They give Betnijah two shots that seal it. I was really hoping for overtime. It's been good basketball. 88-93
