Day 272: Friday September 29, 2023 - "The Silent Alarm Day"
I got out of town on my own, barely - and made it up to Iowa where my parents were waiting in the Des Moines cell phone lot to snatch me up for a fun weekend all together out in the farmland of Iowa. My parents first came to an away game here in 1989 and my Mom had the original Beat Iowa pins from that trip along with that cool old gameday sparty that use to stick the car windows on the way to East Lansing. 34 years later they were back with me for a get-away-day out of the office and off the hook.
We had dinner at the Iowa Beer house which aside from the 100+ Iowa Beers on tap, they also had a meatloaf sandwich, which I immediately declared the best sandwich of this year, before I even touched the second half. Iowa really is a great place. America's Heart (land). We enjoyed a pretty wide variety of Iowa beers before hopping the 2ly highway up to Cedar Rapids where my Mom had lucked us into just-right hotel north of Iowa City where the real treat of the day awaited me. Better than a mother's hug, or a meatloaf sandwich - the joy of a comfy bed all to yourself, to sleep as long as you can. Though my Mom would one-up it later when she crawled into the bed to hug me.

INTRODUCING...
☆ –– (tommy martinez, he/him, cis man) who is MAVERICK 'MAV' TORRES anyways ? ew. you don’t know about HIM, we’ll bet you want to. they’re feeling 28 and CREATING WEIRD FOOD COMBINATIONS feels like a perfect night to them. rumor has it they’re HYPER-FOCUSED and ODD because they care, but they’re also OPEN-MINDED and LAID-BACK in the best way. he works to make a little money as a PRO-HOCKEY PLAYER. they’ve rented on a place on cornelia street in the form of A BROWNSTONE. SEVEN ( muse b ) is the song they could dance to the beat of forevermore. (ooc info: ollie, 25, est, they/them, na. ) ©
HIGHLIGHTS
starting goalie with the new york r.angers but it wasn't the straightest path to get there ; laid-back, open-minded individual... if you catch him outside one of his daily routines ; reflexes like a cat ; lives up to the expectation that "goalies are weird" ; probably eating some disgusting sounding food combo in the kitchen right now.

HISTORY
— the youngest of three ( ariana the eldest now 35, michael the middle child now 31 ), maverick had the choice of what kind of youngest child he was going to be. spoiler : he was the well-behaved youngest sibling.
— born in lansing shortly after his parents' move from new mexico where michael was born —and before that, from venezuela— his parents were the type to chase opportunities. they lived in an apartment there for a little while, before moving out to a small town where his mother was able to get a position to utilize her large animal vet skills. his father, a translator, able to work from the comfort of their home and watch the children.
— they were ushered outside quite a bit, to give their father quiet to work, and in the winter this meant pond hockey with the neighborhood kids. and it is here where mav became a goalie, because everyone knows the youngest sibling is the goalie. — high school was fairly uneventful, with the usual ups and downs. by then, mav had long gotten to be a real goalie with midget and pee wee teams, continuing that love on his high school team. many of his teammates familiar faces.
— graduated high school. got drafted in the 5th round to minnesota. played a year in the ushl (muskegon) not too far from home before heading to brown university ( b.s. pyscholinguistics ). backstopped the bears for 4 full years, before heading off to the iowa wild ( minnesota's ahl affiliate ).
—played a rather mediocre season and a half with the iowa wild, before being traded to the new york r.angers as a piece in a much larger trade. mav wasn't the centerpiece of the trade, rather just an add on after not developing as quickly as the wild had hoped, and another goalie prospect quickly outshining him making him redundant. finished the season with the hartford wolfpack (nyr's ahl team )
— was back with the wolfpack come the next season, though his play saw some improvement, much more consistency and steadiness. he received a few call ups during the first half of the season when minor injuries plagued the tandem, finally receiving his first nhl win. but it was in the final stretch of the season that he was called up again to fill in due to a long-term injury to the starter.
— initially he was only supposed to be a back up, through the rest of the season and during playoffs. it was unlikely he would see much ice time once the regular season ended. he played a few good games in those last couple weeks.
— then playoffs came, and in the first round, he was put in after the other goalie was pulled due to letting in 4 goals in the first, and well — the media says that's truly the moment that mav stole the net and never gave it back.
— his coaches would say he had that potential the whole time, that it was only in the pressure of playoffs that all those great pieces and qualities he possessed to be a great goalie finally came together. the avs made a good run at the cup that year, in large due to consistency in net.
— next training camp, mav came to training camp with a renewed purpose, earning a spot on the team and eventually the starter position as well. mav has yet to give up his net, though he feels far from cemented in it. every training camp brings a new challenge. which brings us to present day...
TIMELINE
2023-24 season, age 28: rangers ( present day ) 2022-23 season, age 27 : rangers 2021-22 season, age 26 : rangers 2020-21 season, age 25 : up and down with the wolfpack, called up before playoffs, lead to a deep playoff run and cemented mav's potential 2019-20 season, age 24 : iowa wild, traded mid season to hartford wolfpack 2018-19 season, age 23 : iowa wild 2017-18 season, age 22 : senior @ brown 2016-17 season, age 21 : junior @ brown 2015-16 season, age 20 : sophomore @ brown 2014-15 season, age 19 : freshman @ brown ( providence, ri ) 2013-14 season, age 18 : ushl season ( muskegon ) 2012-13 season, age 17 : graduated from high school, drafted 5th round ( lansing, mi )
PRESENT DAY
— mav lives in new york during the season. he's usually less present in the summers, preferring to spend them in michigan ( #cottageseason ), but he's presently back in new york with the impending start of the 2023-24 season !! he first moved to new york ( and cornelia street, though he originally lived in a diff building, in the summer of 2021 ).
— currently lives in a lovely brownstone with his childhood best friend, myles, and probably has such an arrangement bc of myles. mav almost didn't get a nyc apartment before that first full year with the rangers, almost scared of getting bounced back and forth again, but ultimately decided even if he only spent part of the time in it, it would be worth it to have some home base rather than living out of a hotel room. but he did think that having a roommate would be a good idea : someone to keep an eye on the place while he was gone ( eg. if he got sent down again ). hence, the roommate ad. he never expected his childhood friend from well over a decade ago to reply, but hey, the universe has a funny way of working. that apartment probably was a bit too small for them, and midway through the season myles was already looking for better options. luckily, a beautiful brownstone in the same neighborhood became available. and that's where they live now having moved in the summer of 2022 !!
— frequents plenty of yoga and pilates classes. he thinks they're fun. will randomly show up for various events and things around the city. one of the many reasons he loves ny is that there's never a shortage of things to do.
— thrives on routine. wakes up at the same time every day, does a short yoga session, does some reflex exercises, wakes his eyes up, makes coffee, reads, eats breakfast. the world isn't going to fall apart if he doesn't do his routine, mav still has a rather level-head about things, the only exception is before games. do not interrupt him ( no matter what he claims to be true in interviews ).
— when not busy with hockey day-to-day mav loves to get out into the city. he participates in various volunteer opportunities from animal shelters to clean ups to helping with youth hockey camps. it's never a dull day.
PERSONALITY
— very laid-back generally. he doesn't like to take things too seriously, though he isn't total goof either. rather open-minded in that he'll try just about anything once ( especially food combinations ) before deciding if he likes it or not. bit of a steadying presence, the calm one in the middle of all the chaos. not much seems to phase him. quick to shake off negative commentary.
— that being said, if he's in the middle of the routine he's VERY hard pressed to break it. luckily, not too many people are awake in the morning to bother him, and his night routine is very simple ( and his game day routine is not currently an issue ). everything in the middle of the day though ?? free game.
— mav does have the tendency to get extremely focused on a single thing. he can get dialed into anything, be it a hockey game ( a very good thing ), cooking, reading, pretty much any task. once he puts his mind to something being done... it will be done. once got really into forging mushrooms.
— loves to figure out how things work : anything from physical objects to people to organizations.
— there are times when mav is thinking about something that he'll get very quiet and almost vacant. he's thinking. don't bother him. — somehow gives off the vibes of someone who has their life together and yet... incredibly boyish. — not reckless. thinks things through surprisingly thoroughly. — not always people's cup of tea, not just because of his odd tendencies, but because he also has an uncanny ability to read people. eyes a little too intense and a little too quiet, at times. chalk it up to his college degree, but mav has almost always been that way, reading people from their behavior and between what's said and not. perhaps that's what makes him a good goalie too.
— to quote lexi brown: "i promise you, the weirdest person on the team is in that net (talking to their posts)"
APPEARANCE
— 6'4", muscular, surprisingly solid for a goalie — jaw length hair, either no facial hair or mild scruff, except during playoffs ofc — style : sweaters, button down, fitted t-shirts, anything soft looking, any color any print esp if it's fun. dark washed / gray / charcoal straight cut jeans or pants, sneakers, chelsea boots. runs quite warm and always seems slightly under-dressed for the weather. — quirks : an ability to look incredibly intense at times especially when he's focused on something, plays with a stress ball ( either using it as intended or tosses it up and down ), does crazy eye exercises sometimes out of the blue, if he's deeply focused he needs to be poked first to get his attention
MISC
— extremely good reflexes. mav can catch just about anything thrown at him no matter what. they're something he needs to keep sharp and one of the most important things he needs to ensure he trains during this long period off from hockey. juggles, regular or with the half dozen off a wall. — loves wacky food combinations. snacks on basically anything as long as it's edible. will regularly make combinations bc he was craving a bunch of different things and "it was more efficient to put them together." thus, the opposite of a picky eater. ( a black hole ?? ) — that being said he is a fairly good cook. knows a lot of family recipes: arepas, corn cakes, chicken soup, rice dishes, coconut desserts, milk cakes, etc. loves genuine spicy hot chocolate. — loves yoga and pilates. flexibility is very important. — constantly jokes that he's a goalie and therefore can't skate very well. — speaks spanish, russian, german, and english — fluent in all, enjoys reading books in their original languages. has somewhat suspect acquisition of korean and mandarin — he's working on it. considers language acquisition one of his hobbies. major was psycholinguistics in college. finds it fascinating how language influences behavior and culture. — definitely a plant dad to many low-maintenance plants — loves a fun block/rooftop party. — "goalies are weird" saying = mav. definitely the type with a very very specific and weird pre-game routine / rituals that simply must be done. always doing some weird shit probably. — has a really good goalie death glare — big proponent of public transit. will take it when given the choice. — does not expect to be recognized most of the time as the rangers' goalie and is always very surprised when he is. similarly, does not always recognize "famous" people. his consumption of media is very skewed and often not focused toward popular media or tabloid type sources. — enjoys sitting on things that were not really made to be sat on : counters, tables, the arms of chairs, the top of his net, etc. — his intro also could have went "assembling ikea furniture feels like a perfect night to them" — can, will, and has slept anywhere — yes his parents are top gun fans hahahah
OOC
hello everyone. it's ollie ( 21+, est, they/them) !! who doesn't love a weird goalie, right ?? please don't hesitate to reach out to me on discord if mav piqued your interest or if you have any ideas !!

Early life
Edward James "Eddie" Adams was born in 1887 on a farm in Hutchinson, Kansas, as William Joseph Wallace. His father died when he was young, and his mother remarried. He had a strong disdain for his stepfather, as well as for physical labor. He learned the barber trade and moved to Wichita in the early 20th century. There, he met John Callahan, and quickly became involved in bootlegging, petty robberies, and car theft.
Adams was handsome and charismatic, and attracted many women and hangers-on. His wife left him after growing weary of his illegal activities and infidelities.
He soon formed his own gang and began committing bank and train robberies throughout Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa, eventually earning a reputation as the premier bandit in the Midwest by the early days of Prohibition.
Murder and Kansas City
In 1920, through Callahan, Adams formed a partnership with outlaw brothers Ray and Walter Majors, and, on September 5, attempted a daylight robbery against a notorious Kansas City gambling den on Grand Avenue owned by Harry Trusdell. However, a shootout between the bandits and tough employees of the illegal casino resulted in the death of gambler and gunman Frank Gardner and the eventual capture of the gang by police.
Adams was sentenced to life imprisonment in February 1921. The Majors brothers received lesser sentences by agreeing to plead guilty to robbery, and were both sentenced to five years' imprisonment. Both brothers eventually died in prison. A third Majors brother involved in the botched robbery attempt, Dudley, escaped from the scene, only to be later arrested and serve time in Delaware.
Midwest crime spree
While being transported to the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City, Missouri, Adams escaped custody by jumping off the train, and several days later joined Julius Finney in the robbery of a bank and general store in Cullison, Kansas, on February 11, 1921. He was captured on February 17, 1921, near Garden Plain, Kansas, by a posse, after wrecking a stolen car under a bridge. Convicted of bank robbery, Adams was sentenced to serve 10 to 30 years at the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing, in addition to his life sentence in Missouri for murder.
On August 13, Adams once again successfully escaped imprisonment after sabotaging the prison power plant and scaling the prison walls during the night, along with inmates Frank Foster, George Weisberger, and D.C. Brown. The driver of the getaway car was Billy Fintelman, a World War I veteran who had turned to a life of crime. With the exception of Brown (who was recaptured days later), the fugitives eluded capture from state authorities and eventually formed what became the newest incarnation of the Adams gang.
By September of that year, joined by Fintelman, the gang robbed around $10,000 from banks in Rose Hill and Haysville, Kansas. During the Haysville robbery, Adams pistol-whipped 82-year-old James Krievell for no apparent reason, who later died of a fractured skull.
On October 8, police attempted to trap the gang near Anoly, Kansas, but the gang managed to escape after a gunfight that left Deputy Benjamin Fisher wounded. The gang was spotted 11 days later after stealing $500 in silver from a bank near Osceola, Iowa. This was followed by another attempt by a posse to apprehend the gang just south of Murray, Iowa, where the gang rested for several hours along a gravel road just a few miles from town. Having spotted the gang's vehicle, suspicious farmer Charles William Jones (1870–1921) contacted Murray Sheriff Ed West, and a group was formed to investigate and intervene.
Upon approaching the vehicle, Sheriff West was met at point-blank range with a revolver to his face that failed to fire. He was able to take cover, and a shootout followed in which several members of the posse were seriously injured. Jones, having heard the gun battle from his farm up the road, grabbed his shotgun and ran to aid sheriff West and his group. The gang, who had by now fled from the original site, drove up the road and exchanged fire with Jones, which left him mortally wounded.
Heading for Wichita, the gang's crime spree continued - robbing 11 stores in Muscotah, Kansas, and abducting and later robbing two motorcycle officers outside Wichita, where their motorcycles were set on fire. Back in Wichita, on November 5, 1921, Adams shot and killed Patrolman A.L. Young in cold blood while Young was on duty. The motive behind the killing was said to be a mutual love interest, who had chosen the company of the officer over the outlaw. The gang then committed their most successful robbery with the theft of $35,000 after robbing a Santa Fe express train near Ottawa, Kansas.
Downfall
On the evening of November 20, 1921, Adams, along with Foster, Nellie Miles (a local madam and long-time friend of Adams), George J. McFarland (a local thug and bootlegger), and two alleged prostitutes, were joyriding around Wichita. Another car carrying Fintelman, his wife, Weisberger, P.D. Orcutt, and two unnamed ladies, followed at high speeds. Two motorcycle policemen pulled over the vehicle carrying Adams, and a gunshot came from the vehicle; whether the shot was fired by Adams or Foster is unknown, but it killed patrolman Robert Fitzpatrick. The outlaws sped away, released the women, and fled south into Cowley County.
Later that night, the trio ran out of gas and stopped at a farm, where Adams attempted to steal a vehicle from farmer George Oldham. When Oldham resisted, Adams shot and killed him. Adams and Foster took the car, while McFarland ran away alone into the night. The duo returned to Wichita in the stolen car. The next day, Adams and Billy Fintelman went to McFarland's house to look for him, only to find two officers waiting. Adams shot and wounded officer Ray Casner, while the other policeman hid under a bed. Adams once again escaped.
Adams hid out until the funeral of fallen officer Fitzpatrick on November 22, at which he assumed the bulk of the police force would be present. He had planned to rent a car to leave town for good, but the proprietor of the garage recognized him and contacted police. Three officers arrived on the scene. Adams shot at them, fatally wounding detective Charles Hoffman, who had pulled Adams to the ground. Officer Charles Bowman was also hit by gunfire. D.C. Stuckey, hiding behind a pillar, shot Adams three times and killed him.
Eddie Adams' body was publicly displayed in the City Undertaking Parlor in a grisly celebration of the end of a reign of terror. More than 9,000 people viewed the slain outlaw. In the end, 18 people were arrested as accomplices and hangers-on of Adams. Four were sent to the Kansas State Penitentiary, including Frank Foster, who was sentenced to remain there for life.

Drake: 2023-24 Missouri Valley Men's Basketball Champions
Tumblr media
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Atin Wright went down on his knees and slapped the court with two hands, smiling at his Drake teammates while Tucker DeVries headed to the free-throw line, as the crowd chanted “M-V-P.”
Wright is a newcomer for the Bulldogs, drawn from his native California by the promise of winning. DeVries is the two-time Missouri Valley Conference player of the year, the son of Drake coach Darian DeVries.
Together – and with big plays by Darnell Brodie and Conor Enright – they helped land Drake back in the NCAA Tournament, holding off a late rally by Indiana State for an 84-80 victory Sunday in the Valley championship game at the Enterprise Center.
It was a second consecutive tournament triumph for the Bulldogs, who won’t have to sweat out a week of waiting to find out if they’re going to the Big Dance. They’re in. Again. For a third time in four years.
But it wasn’t easy. Indiana State trailed by double-digits for much of the game. But the Sycamores awoke late, with a 10-0 burst fueled by Isaiah Swope. He had eight points in that stretch, and scored all of his 19 after intermission. His four-point play gave Indiana State a 74-73 lead, its first since 2-0 in the opening minutes.
Drake was unfazed.
Brodie connected on a short hook shot. Enright fought through a screen to draw a foul on the defensive end, then calmly canned a 3-pointer to put Drake back ahead 79-76. Brodie made two free throws late, patiently waiting through a timeout for his opportunity, and DeVries made one to produce the final tally for the Bulldogs, who soon were swarming off of their bench to celebrate what they worked all winter to accomplish.
Drake (28-6), the second seed, was making its fourth consecutive appearance in the Valley title game, only the second school to ever do so (Tulsa, no longer a Valley member, was in six straight from 1982-87). The Bulldogs beat Bradley here a year ago to win this event for only the second time in school history (the first was in 2008).
Top-seeded Indiana State (28-6) last won this tournament in 2011, when they were coached by Iowa native Greg Lansing.
Sunday’s showdown was dazzling from the outset. The first media timeout didn’t come until 12:07 remained in the first half, as the Valley’s top two offensive teams set a frenzied pace early. All five Drake starters scored in the opening 5 minutes, including back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers by Enright, DeVries and Kevin Overton. When play was finally stopped by a deadball situation, Drake, the deeper team, led 21-13 and was able to sub in three fresh players.
Moments later, when Overton and DeVries both went to the bench with two early fouls, Wright took over, nailing a trio of 3-pointers to push Drake ahead 37-23 and prompt an Indiana State timeout. The Bulldogs connected on their first seven 3-point attempts.
Then it was Sycamores guard Ryan Conwell’s turn to assert himself, reeling off seven consecutive points to cut that deficit in half.
Drake pushed its lead to 45-32 at halftime, boosted by 15 points from Wright and 14 from DeVries, and a defensive effort that held the Sycamores scoreless over the final 4:24 of the half. It was Indiana State’s largest halftime deficit this season.
Drake got off to a strong start in the second half as well, making its first three field-goal attempts, two of them by DeVries, as the lead swelled to 53-37. But even that never felt comfortable against the Sycamores, who pushed Drake to the brink.
The Bulldogs didn’t blink. They’re champions again, with two nets and a trophy to show for it.

ITA's Geographical Moment (Allamakee County)
NE Iowa's Allamakee County
Allamakee County is located on the far NE Corner of Iowa deep in the heart of Iowa drift-less land formation. Drift-less doesn’t mean amnesty from shoveling snow or blocked roads. Instead it simply refers to the area of Iowa that missed out on the  last glacial period in Iowa and thus wasn’t flattened. Mount Hosmer One of the hill/mountain formations can be found near Lansing and offers an…

Future Favorites as College Basketball Begins
Tumblr media
The college basketball season for both men and women began on Monday, and two unusual upsets highlighted opening night. The best women’s basketball team in the land, the LSU Tigers, were easily handled by the Colorado Buffaloes, 92-78. Frida Foremann of Colorado led the upset with 27 points and seven 3-pointers. Angel Reece, who was the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player when LSU rolled to the national championship last spring, had just 15 points on 15 shots. It was the first time a women’s defending national champion lost on opening night since 1995. On the men’s side the No. 4 ranked Michigan State Spartans lost to James Madison, 76-74 in overtime, making it just the first time a top-five team lost to an unranked opponent on opening night since 2005. That team that lost in 2005 was Michigan State. This was the first November home loss for the Spartans since 1986, and just the second time in school history that James Madison has beaten a ranked team.
Men’s National Championship Favorites
- Kansas (+1000) - Duke (+1100) - Purdue (+1100) - Kentucky (+1200) - Arizona (+1400) - UConn (+1400) - Michigan State (+1800) - Marquette (+1800) Kansas has made head coach Bill Self the highest paid coach in the nation, and the Jayhawks are the favorites to win another national championship. They won it in 2022, but last year they were knocked out in the second round by Arkansas. UConn is the defending national champion, and the Huskies are tied with Arizona for the fifth shortest odds to begin the season. The Wildcats won the Pac-12 Tournament last year and were awarded a two-seed, but they were bounced in the first round by the 15th-seeded Princeton Tigers. Michigan State has fallen to +1800 after their loss to JMU in East Lansing.
Women’s National Championship Favorites
- UConn (+400) - LSU (+450) - Iowa (+900) - Utah (+950) - South Carolina (+1100) - UCLA (+1400) - Indiana (+1500) - Ohio State (+1800) LSU has dropped behind UConn as the early favorites to win the women’s national championship. UConn holds the record with 11 women’s national championships, and this season they have Page Bueckers. She was the AP, Naismith, and John Wooden Player of the Year in 2021, but missed all of last year with a torn ACL. She headlines a great battle for this season’s player of the year, with Reece from LSU and Caitlin Clark of Iowa. Reece is the preseason SEC Player of the Year, and Clark is the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year. Reece and Clark, and LSU and Iowa, played in the finals last year of the highest rated NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament in history.
