About PHP everything you should know before taking any decision
youtube
In today article, we are going to talk about PHP only. So you want to start learning PHP? Or you want to make your career in PHP but you have some doubts are you have read somewhere that PHP is dying OR you have heard that PHP will no longer be in the future You Can't survive on PHP only? There is a very low pay on PHP so what should you do? Right? If this kind of questions come to your mind or you have heard about it and definitely this video is going to help you to make a decision whether you should go with PHP or we should not use PHP. It will be totally your decision. Hello, my name is Durgesh Sahani and from the last 7 years, I am working with PHP. To create this article and I also have taken some help from the online resources like php.net site, Wikipedia and from some other reliable places and also added my own contribution to it. I also have prepared a simple presentation of 7 to 8 slides and video. Definitely, this is going to help you to make you a decision that you should stick to PHP or you should leave the PHP So without wasting your time let's get started. I'll start with PHP introduction you already know that PHP is open source means you no need to pay anything to use it. It’s a server-side scripting language. It is mainly used to develop websites but also you can use it for command-line execution. For example, A CRON Job written in PHP and you want to execute through command line you can do that definitely. It has great documentation if you want to read about a specific function so you can read it through its well-documented documentation. php.net/ is an official website and documentation is available in English, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish It has a big community, It is widely used server-side scripting language. And have a great marketplace like Composer, PECL, PEAR. Composer - It is a tool for dependency management in PHP. It allows you to declare the libraries your project depends on and it will manage (install/update) them for you. and if you want to see the packages which are developed in PHP over here we can find it and using composer you can download it and you can use it to your program without taking care about the third party package because everything every required dependency will be managed by the composer so again this is a great help. PECL - PHP Extension Community Library This is a PHP official community website where you can go and browse the packages, download the DLL files, include in your PHP working folder, enable it and use is like predefined libraries to your project similarly. These libraries are written in C language or some other languages and DLL will be provided to you so this is what PECL PEAR - PHP Extension Application Repository This is the official application repository website here they have listed all the packages these all the packages are completely written in PHP only. You can download it and use it for your program. Supports almost all the database relational and non-relational so what do you mean by that - by default most developed using MySQL with it but you can use PostgreSQL, you can use MSSQL (Microsoft SQL) Oracle DB even on non-relational(no-SQL) database is like MongoDB. It provides the required library for all these kind of databases. Let's talk about PHP frameworks. These frameworks are used to create a website. They have a great list of features on top of PHP, which will reduce your time while developing your website. There is a big list of frameworks are built on PHP but I have listed top 10 frameworks here: Laravel Symfony Zend Framework( Zend Framework is created by is Zend Organization which maintain the PHP) CodeIgniter CakePHP FuelPHP Yii Phalcon Slim PHPixie I hope you have heard about these frameworks. There are several frameworks is created and which will help you to start very easily. I also want to highlight some of the CMS(Content Management System) builds in PHP. CMS are the tools which are used to create, edit, publish content. Whenever you thought to design a website the first things come to your mind is WordPress by using this WordPress you can create your own website you can create custom plugins you can create themes and within 5 minutes your website will be ready. WordPress Joomla Drupal Magento (Magento is for E-commerce website if you want to create within some couple of minutes I will be ready with your e-commerce websites) OpenCart SilverStripe Modx Concrete5 PHP Fusion PHPWiki So all these CMS are built in PHP and making developers job easy. The next point, and it's very important you should not miss it why big companies are investing times, money and resources to create libraries for PHP? and not only that creating there also maintaining it what I mean by this line is see PHP previously the PHP was 5.6 or 5.4 any language any company have created a library for 5 then as PHP 7.X is released so there creating a new library to support latest PHP, they are maintaining as well. Companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft Amazon continuously developing their library and maintaining for PHP and not only that but also making their could infrastructure ready for PHP. Many payment gateways almost all payment gateways developing and giving support for their libraries for PHP each version. And every SMS/Email gateway/service provider also creating and maintaining libraries for PHP. If PHP is going to die then why this kind of companies are investing their time, money, resources and infrastructure to develop this kind of library and maintain it why right?? So obviously you can say that because they want to sell their products but what I am trying to say here is if they know that PHP is going to die or there is no future of PHP why still they are investing their time, money, resources and all other things. right?? So definitely it makes sense so that's why I have put these points here. Again one important point is, what's new in PHP not talking about previous one year older one and talking about the 7x and letter one ok so in PHP 7 the performance of PHP is increased by 50% I just wanted to cover 2.1 only performance in security the performance is tuned by I mean increased by 50% and how they have done it they have made some changes in the core functionality of PHP now the PHP consume less RAM, less memory but perform well. so ZEND organization you have heard about Zen engine previously send engine 2 was there which was used with PHP 5.6 but now they have a developed a new engine that is called ZEND ENGINE 3 now and they have tuned core functionality, core libraries of PHP and that's the reason is why the performance of PHP is increasing by almost 50%. And the second point I want to cover is a security many of you have heard that PHP is not secure I mean and obviously I also agree on it. Because the when the initial PHP was developed in 1995 by Rasmus Lerdorf in that time it was not meant is a programming language at that time he wanted to solve some sort of problem and for that he has created something, some tools at that time it was not a programming language letter in PHP version 3 was released at that time it was somehow a programming language to obviously he was not thought about the security point of view but now it's very popular programming language so they are doing the best job in this should have you have got that PHP has deprecated this function PHP had to remove the support of this library so what they trying to do is there trying to remove all the vulnerable functions libraries from the PHP. and somewhere I have read that hackers 10x smarter than developers so it's developer job as well that you should check your application right?? for example see you have built up your great machine and you have saved all the information to your files and credentials, password and all the things but you have forgotten to lock your computer OR forget to set a password for your computer then, in that case, it is not secure Right?? Even though you have a great setup of a machine or you have built up a very good home very luxury home but whenever you going out or anywhere you are not locking the door so you are keeping the loop whole open right so as a developer you should also think about these points. So I have mentions of a couple of points which you can take care of while developing your website or applications like PHP has deprecated many vulnerable functions, library. They already have taken removed the possible vulnerable function library from PHP 7.X like mysql_*, mcrypt library, etc. Input fields validation(Sanitization/Escaping) so while parsing any data or while accepting any input from the user you should validate, you should sanitize it, you should escape the special characters, etc. Cross-site scripting (XSS) - XSS is a client-side attack. Hacker tries to inject some javascript code to your request. You can prevent this by parsing and javascript code while saving data in the database. SQL Injection Attacks - Here the target is your database, If someone can access your database then all your sensitive information is gone, like password, credit card details even he can delete your database. You can prevent this by validating all the possible areas from where you are interacting with your database like user input, GET request, etc. Cross-site request forgery XSRF/CSRF - Again Cross-site request forgery is an attack by which someone can perform some action for which they are not authorized. you can prevent this kind of attack by using some token-based request. Securely upload files with all possible validations while uploading a file you should take care of all the validations like if you want to upload only is JPG file or PNG images file then you should validate that at that point that there should not be any .exe file or any other documents should not be uploaded to your server Hide Files from the Browser - Meaning anyone should not be able to access your files directly from the web browser. You can put an index.* or default.* file in each directory or use .htaccess file to set the rules for the same. Session Hijacking - Session Hijacking is also known as cookie hijacking. In this type of attack, someone tries to steal a valid session and perform all the action like a real session. The best way to protect session hijacking is to use SSL. Use SSL Certificates For HTTPs Now let’s talk about the future of PHP developer (completely my point of view): What I think is you can get a Framework specific jobs as a dimension there so many popular frameworks like a Laravel Symphony Zend Framework you can get a job as a Laravel developer this is a beauty of PHP if you look for jobs at any job sites so if you see there will be some jobs where they mention in Laravel developer is required Symphony developer is required to you will get a job in these kinds of frameworks then you can get a job on CMS specific so if your master of WordPress you can get a job as a WordPress developer Magento developer so that's what I have written here you can get a job as a Framework specific you can get CMS specific job even as PHP is written PHP scripting language so you can write some script and execute on the server there are so many tools are written in PHP and supports PHP so many of the tools are used by the DevOps teams there is a chance you can get jobs in DevOps team. and obviously, jobs always will be there for PHP developers no doubts and I also agree that in some cases I have seen PHP developer is paid less than the other developers like Java, .NET but also have seen that there are some Java and .NET developer are getting paid less than the PHP developers so it totally depends on the situations. right?? And while studying and gathering the information’s I found one important link, I want to share with you guy's which is a YouTube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKXFgWP-2xQ this is a Rasmus Lerdorf and in the video, he has explained everything about PHP the basic history and how the performance is tuned by their guys, how security is enhanced, and all the other things. You should definitely watch this video. And finally, what do you think guy’s please let me know in the comment box and we will discuss these points so this is all about for this article. I hope you understand PHP and hope this will help you to make the decision. Understood MVC in one sentence after so many years! Great job Edwin. A great deal of effort has been put by Edwin to create the content in two parts , first for understanding the basic components (eloquent relationships, views, controller etc) and then actually using it in a project. And he loves teaching. We love learning from him!

A Roundup of Laravel Testing Resources and Packages
Testing code is one of the more challenging parts of programming, but luckily Laravel and some other tools are making it easier than ever. Research has even shown implementing a Test-Driven Development (TDD) approach can significantly reduce the number of bugs that make it to production. Testing provides many other benefits, like the freedom to refactor large parts of a system without (as much) fear of breaking things.
Everybody has a testing environment. Some people are lucky enough enough to have a totally separate environment to run production in.
— Papa Devops (@stahnma) August 21, 2015
With all of the benefits of testing, it’s still challenging to continually test applications. If you are looking to start learning how to test Laravel applications or you want to expand your skills here is a list of great resources to help you:
The Official Documentation
The official Laravel documentation is arguably the most complete testing guide that ships with a PHP framework. Not only does the guide itself make it very easy to start testing Laravel applications, but the framework itself also provides essential tools that take away the excuses of not testing. The most important features to make testing easier—that ship with Laravel—include database migrations for testing, factories, and mocking/fakes.
This first resource is obvious, but those new to Laravel and testing applications, stop by the documentation first. As a companion to the documentation, watch the Laracasts video Laravel From Scratch: Testing 101 for an overview of testing Laravel.
Laravel Dusk
Laravel Dusk is a browser testing package that works with >= Laravel 5.4. The Dusk documentation is part of the official Laravel documentation, but it’s worth mentioning separately because it is a recent addition to the Laravel testing tools. Dusk doesn’t require Selenium but uses the standalone ChromeDriver—which ships with the package.
Dusk allows you to test dynamic JavaScript applications with convenient browser abstractions and PHPUnit assertions. Before Laravel 5.4 full browser testing automation wasn’t possible without third party packages. This is another example of the Laravel framework facilitating testing and making it convenient for developers to get started.
The Orchestral Testbench Component
The Orchestral Testbench package is a testing helper for Laravel package development. According to the readme file, the Orchestral Testbench package:
…is a simple package that has been designed to help you write tests for your Laravel package, especially when there is routing involved.
The Laracasts Laravel Behat Extension
Behat is the defacto tool for Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) in the PHP community, and this package can help you get started with Behat and Laravel quickly. Before Laravel Dusk was available, full browser testing automation was only possible with third party packages and tools.
Although Dusk is now available, Behat might be a tool you prefer for acceptance testing if you prefer the BDD flavor of testing with Cucumber. Laracasts provides a lesson on using Behat,Laravel 5 and Behat: BFFs, which will help you get started with Behat 3 and Laravel 5.
phpspec
phpspec is a tool for writing BDD Specifications in PHP. The interesting thing about phpspec is how it guides you through small steps in writing test specifications, then making them pass. Learning phpspec can open your mind to a new way of testing.
You can learn how to get started with the phpspec manual. Laracasts has an introduction video to compliment the documentation. phpspec is a great tool for testing any PHP project, including Laravel packages.
phpspec Laravel Extension
phpspec Laravel Extension helps you test Laravel applications with phpspec:
This extension provides you with a bootstrapped Laravel environment when writing your phpspec tests.
Learning phpspec is a prerequisite for using this package.
Let’s Build a Forum with Laravel and TDD
The Build a Forum with Laravel and TDD series is only available to subscribers, but a the time of this writing there are 58 lessons on building a forum with Laravel and Test-Driven Development. This is one of the most complete tutorials on testing with Laravel and TDD. Even if you exhaust the generous number of free resources first, this is a great way to learn more about TDD with Laravel.
Test-Driven Laravel
Test-Driven Laravel is a video series by Adam Wathan which provides a thorough look into testing Laravel applications. This course is not free, but as of this writing, you could still get early access. The course has many hours of courses with more still being added.
Adam Wathan initially gave a presentation on Test-Driven Laravel at ZendCon and then condensed his talk into a screencast you can watch online. We’ve also reviewed this course on Laravel News.
Spatie Laravel Packages
Spatie provides many Laravel packages, and they continue to ship new packages to the community. The packages contain a wealth of testing source code and are a good reference to help you learn how to test Laravel packages. Some packages have a dependency on the aforementioned Orchestral Testbench, providing you with some examples of using Testbench in action.
Spatie packages also have Continuous Integration with Travis CI (laravel-backup example). The murze.be blog provides Laravel tips and tricks on package development and new package announcements being released by Spatie.
The Ruby on Rails Tutorial Book
This resource is a bit of a wildcard. While not PHP or Laravel related, this free online book is chock-full of real-world testing examples you can apply to your projects. It starts picking up testing features in Chapter 3.3.
Even if you don’t care about Ruby or Rails, you will be hard-pressed to find better testing material on how to write web application tests, including the theory behind what to test and how to test it. You can follow along or just read through the material to get some great testing insight and inspiration.
Test Driven Development: By Example
Test Driven Development: By Example is considered by many a classic text on TDD. While the examples are not written in PHP, the book covers an expansive list of TDD patterns and practices and will provide beginners a good background on TDD with some practical examples.

Hello, Laravel? Communicating with PHP through Phone Calls!
Twilio is a SaaS application which enables developers to build telephone applications using web technologies. In this two-part series, we will leverage Twilio to build a weather forecast app that is accessed using the telephone system. The backend will be written with the Laravel framework (an exploratory video course is available for purchase here, or in the form of written tutorials here).
In this part, we will create a simple program that will allow a user to call a phone number that we buy from Twilio, enter a zipcode, and receive the current weather forecast. The user can also get the weather for any day of the week via the voice menu prompts. In the second part of this series, we will leverage what was built in this article to allow the user to interact with the app via SMS (text message).
Prerequisites
Development Environment
This article assumes Homestead Improved is installed. It is not necessary to use it, but the commands might differ slightly if you use a different environment. If you are not familiar with Homestead and want to produce similar results as this article aims to produce, please visit this SitePoint article that shows how to set up Homestead, and if you need a crash course in Vagrant, please see this post. Additionally, if this whets your appetite and you feel like exploring PHP development environments in depth, we have a book about that available for purchase.
Dependencies
We will create a new Laravel project and then add the Twilio PHP SDK and Guzzle HTTP client library to the project:
cd ~/Code composer create-project --prefer-dist laravel/laravel Laravel 5.4.* cd Laravel composer require "twilio/sdk:^5.7" composer require "guzzlehttp/guzzle:~6.0"
Development
Let's go through all the steps, one by one.
Routes
Open up the routes/web.php file and add the following ones:
Route::group(['prefix' => 'voice', 'middleware' => 'twilio'], function () { Route::post('enterZipcode', 'VoiceController@showEnterZipcode')->name('enter-zip'); Route::post('zipcodeWeather', 'VoiceController@showZipcodeWeather')->name('zip-weather'); Route::post('dayWeather', 'VoiceController@showDayWeather')->name('day-weather'); Route::post('credits', 'VoiceController@showCredits')->name('credits'); });
In this app, all requests will be under the /voice path. When Twilio first connects to the app, it will go to /voice/enterZipcode via HTTP POST. Depending on what happens in the telephone call, Twilio will make requests to other endpoints. This includes /voice/zipcodeWeather for providing today's forecast, /voice/dayWeather, for providing a particular day's forecast, and /voice/credits for providing information on where the data came from.
Service Layer
We are going to add a service class. This class will hold a lot of the business logic that will be shared between the voice telephone app and the SMS app.
Create a new sub-folder called Services inside the app folder. Then, create a file called WeatherService.php and put the following content into it:
<?php namespace App\Services; use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Cache; use Twilio\Twiml; class WeatherService { }
This is a large file in the project, so we will build it piece by piece. Put the following pieces of code in this section inside our new service class:
public $daysOfWeek = [ 'Today', 'Sunday', 'Monday', 'Tuesday', 'Wednesday', 'Thursday', 'Friday', 'Saturday' ];
We will use this array to map a day of the week to a number; Sunday = 1, Monday = 2, etc.
public function getWeather($zip, $dayName) { $point = $this->getPoint($zip); $tz = $this->getTimeZone($point); $forecast = $this->retrieveNwsData($zip); $ts = $this->getTimestamp($dayName, $zip); $tzObj = new \DateTimeZone($tz->timezoneId); $tsObj = new \DateTime(null, $tzObj); $tsObj->setTimestamp($ts); foreach ($forecast->properties->periods as $k => $period) { $startTs = strtotime($period->startTime); $endTs = strtotime($period->endTime); if ($ts > $startTs and $ts < $endTs) { $day = $period; break; } } $response = new Twiml(); $weather = $day->name; $weather .= ' the ' . $tsObj->format('jS') . ': '; $weather .= $day->detailedForecast; $gather = $response->gather( [ 'numDigits' => 1, 'action' => route('day-weather', [], false) ] ); $menuText = ' '; $menuText .= "Press 1 for Sunday, 2 for Monday, 3 for Tuesday, "; $menuText .= "4 for Wednesday, 5 for Thursday, 6 for Friday, "; $menuText .= "7 for Saturday. Press 8 for the credits. "; $menuText .= "Press 9 to enter in a new zipcode. "; $menuText .= "Press 0 to hang up."; $gather->say($weather . $menuText); return $response; }
The getWeather method takes a zipcode with the day of the week and crafts the text of a weather forecast. First, it figures out the reference time for the day requested, and then looks up the weather forecast by doing a foreach over the array of forecast data. After that, it returns a Voice TwiML response. Below is a sample of what is returned:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <Response> <Gather numDigits="1" action="/voice/dayWeather"> <Say> This Afternoon the 31st: Sunny, with a high near 72. South southwest wind around 8 mph. Press 1 for Sunday, 2 for Monday, 3 for Tuesday, 4 for Wednesday, 5 for Thursday, 6 for Friday, 7 for Saturday. Press 8 for the credits. Press 9 to enter in a new zipcode. Press 0 to hang up. </Say> </Gather> </Response>
The <Gather> tag tells Twilio to expect input from the user's keypad. The numDigits attribute says how many digits to expect. The action attribute says what endpoint to contact next.
protected function retrieveNwsData($zip) { return Cache::remember('weather:' . $zip, 60, function () use ($zip) { $point = $this->getPoint($zip); $point = $point->lat . ',' . $point->lng; $url = 'http://ift.tt/2siEbBl' . $point . '/forecast'; $client = new \GuzzleHttp\Client(); $response = $client->request('GET', $url, [ 'headers' => [ 'Accept' => 'application/geo+json', ] ]); return json_decode((string)$response->getBody()); }); }
The retrieveNwsData method gets the weather forecast data. First, the method checks to see if a copy of the zipcode's weather forecast is in cache. If not, then the Guzzle HTTP client is used to make an HTTP GET request to the National Weather Service's (NWS) API endpoint http://ift.tt/2siJ4Kk. To get the geographic point of the zipcode, a call is made to the getPoint method before doing the request to the weather API. The response from the API endpoint is the weather forecast in GeoJSON format. The forecast is for every day and night for a week (with some exceptions we will discuss later); 14 entries in all. We cache the API response for an hour because making the request is slow, plus we do not want to hit the government servers too frequently and get banned.
protected function getPoint($zip) { return Cache::remember('latLng:' . $zip, 1440, function () use ($zip) { $client = new \GuzzleHttp\Client(); $url = 'http://ift.tt/1p5neFv'; $response = $client->request('GET', $url, [ 'query' => [ 'postalcode' => $zip, 'countryBias' => 'US', 'username' => env('GEONAMES_USERNAME') ] ]); $json = json_decode((string)$response->getBody()); return $json->postalCodes[0]; }); }
The getPoint method maps a zipcode to a geographic point. This is done by using the GeoNames API. The results are cached for a day because using the API is slow.
protected function getTimeZone($point) { $key = 'timezone:' . $point->lat . ',' . $point->lng; return Cache::remember($key, 1440, function () use ($point) { $client = new \GuzzleHttp\Client(); $url = 'http://ift.tt/1C9XM7m'; $response = $client->request('GET', $url, [ 'query' => [ 'lat' => $point->lat, 'lng' => $point->lng, 'username' => env('GEONAMES_USERNAME') ] ]); return json_decode((string) $response->getBody()); }); }
The getTimeZone method is used to get the timezone that a geographic point resides inside. The GeoNames API is also used and the results are cached for a day for the same reasons.
