not sure if i mentioned this before, but one of my electives this term is a film class! my prof often lets us watch films during class, and earlier this week he showed us Ang Larawan (The Portrait)! This one is up for free so it's accessible to non-PH peeps!

the film is adapted off the locally famous play A Portait of the Artist as Filipino, and takes place months before WWII comes to the Philippines. the two main characters live in an ancestral home in what used to be the central city of the philippines, where they try to take care of their aged father amidst loss of funds, peckish neighbors, and enthralled academics looking to catch a glimpse of the father's magnum opus - a self portrait.
as may be apparent, this film is a little bit of a history lesson, a little bit of a look into the problems that still persist in the country today (particularly with ancestral houses and families not being able to cope with it. hahahah). this is conveyed in a really interesting way, given that the film is actually a musical! while my friends and i laughed a bit because almost all of the dialogue is sung, i'm glad that the actors really sold it well too, and that the writing was really tight.
other than that, the set design (tho mostly taking place in one house) and the costuming are so great. in terms of and choreography cinematography too, the film has really impactful compositions and placement of elements!
while i think that the subtitles don't do the dialogue justice, i do hope that whoever decides to watch this will enjoy!
Masarap dito at hindi ganoon ka-pricey. Pinakanagustuhan ko dito yung tempura na maki roll ang sarap niya talaga.
Chicken karaage was okay.
