Moving On Is Hard

Happy New Year! I know it has been a while since I posted. A lot has happened in my life since May, good and not so good. However it’s been an incredible learning experience for myself as a woman and mother.

For almost a year now, I’ve had this unsettling feeling. I felt like something was missing. I felt empty, sad. I lived in a beautiful home, my family was healthy and happy. I had no financial or health issues. But for some reason, I dreaded getting ready for work and I actually love what I do. I slept more than normal and the smallest things would set me off. I could not figure out what was going on with my emotions. 

I tried many things to “cheer” myself up. I tried new recipes in the kitchen. I bought myself new clothes, and tried new hairstyles. New makeup looks didn’t fix my attitude and hitting the gym regularly didn’t help. 

I began to worry. Did I need to seek professional help? Should I have my hormones checked by my doctor? How can one have a loving partner, supportive family, and a brilliant and sweet child feel so low? I felt guilty for feeling bad. How dare I not appreciate this beautiful life I lived?

It wasn’t until recently that I realized what was wrong. I pulled into my driveway after a long night at work. I sat there in silence for 15 minutes in deep thought. I thought about quitting my job, deleting social media, finding a new career and disappearing until I found my happiness. I finally pulled myself out of my vehicle, and as I walked to the door, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I stopped in my tracks with my dance bag hanging off of my sore shoulders. 

“OXYTOCIN!” 

I fumbled my keys, finally walked inside and I ran upstairs and put my things down. I wrote it down on paper. “Oxytocin. Oxytocin. Oxytocin...” Allow me to explain. 

Shortly after my son’s third birthday, my body stopped producing breast milk. My son would still comfort-nurse maybe once or twice a day but there was no more milk coming out. Breastfeeding, as many of you may know, was such a HUGE part of my life. A huge part of Prince’s life. While breastfeeding, a mother’s body produces the hormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin is often refer to as “the Love hormone.” 

I got in the shower and began to cry. I never though that when breastfeeding came to and end, it would affect me emotionally. Not like this. I then began to think of how all of the other ways my son and I bonded were also now over.

1. Prince is fully potty trained so no more diaper or training underwear changes where we would bond.

2. He no longer showers or bathes with me, which was a vital part of our nightly routine. Lots of skin to skin, producing lots of oxytocin and helping my breasts to produce more milk. Now Prince plays in the bathtub solo.  I’m there, but basically like a supervisor.  

3. He also sleeps in his own bed instead of cosleeping and cuddled with me (thanks to his dad kicking him out of the bed). Cosleeping allowed us to get lots of sleep. We would sleep from midnight until noon (or later) the next day while I was a stay at home mom. Even when I began to work, as long as he felt me beside him, he would sleep comfortably for many more hours.

4. Prince can now feed himself. Of course I prepare his meals but he no longer receives his nourishment from my breasts.  He’s running around the house with apple slices, drinking water from his Paw Patrol water bottle, and telling me what he’d like for lunch. 

I cried a little more before getting out of the shower. I then decided to do some research. Do other mothers spiral into sadness after their breastfeeding journey comes to an end? Are these feelings normal or should I seek counseling? I was awake for hours reading the stories of other mothers that experienced this same feeling.  They all said the same: they were sad and did not know why. All roads eventually led to lack of oxytocin. 

I was relieved. I felt so much better knowing WHY I felt sad and also because I wasn’t alone. I talked to my family and close friends about it and they’re all relieved as well. Yes, breastfeeding was super important but it served its purpose, I was able to nourish my baby and bond with him in the best way. Now he’s incredibly independent and intelligent. 

I’m now handeling life post-breastfeeding a lot better. I am finding other ways to bond with my three-year old. We read in bed together, Prince sits on my lap while we watch NBA games, and his swim lessons also keeps us close.  When the weather is warm, he loves to play soccer in the park.

Three years of successfully breastfeeding is a goal that many women can only dream about and I did it. Just the thought of it is a shot of oxytocin to my soul. I am much more appreciative of the little ways Prince chooses to show affection. Yes, change can be tough but we are learning to enjoy our journey with breastfeeding in our memories.
