The hotel suite was lush, two bedrooms and a spacious living room area with floor to ceiling windows that overlook the city. The Ponte Vecchio was framed through the windows so that when the sun hit the water in the late afternoon it framed the old brick bridge and the tourists that flock to it in a soft glow. You’d spent the night before on the balcony with a glass of wine, a blanket pulled from the bed wrapped around you as read your book, everyone else sleeping off jet lag. 

The historic hotel had an air of old worldly charm with modern amenities.

“Look, I love you. You know that right?” You bit your lip, “But I’d promise to do whatever it takes for you not to wear all of this ensemble all at once.” you pleased.

Joel held his arms out and looked down at his outfit, “What’s wrong with it?” he asked, genuinely confused.

“What’s right with it?” Sarah shouted from where she lay across the plush sofa where she was scrolling through her phone.

You had warned him several times to pack an outfit in the carryon, just in case you’d told him. It’ll be fine he replied, what could go wrong? Well somewhere between the stop over in New York and the flight to Rome, his suitcase had gone AWOL. Not the start you’d anticipated for this family vacation, an invitation to celebrate your parents anniversary alongside them.

At the airport dressed only in the t-shirt and sweats he’d travelled in for almost twenty hours you’d left him to his own devices to navigate the airports stores to see if he could find any clothes that would make do while you navigated putting a claim in for the missing luggage.

You hadn’t been prepared for what he’d brought back.

Joel gave a playful glare in Sarah's direction, adjusting the rim of his hat slightly. The ensemble, consisting of a plain white t-shirt (the concierge had arranged for a fast turnaround on the dry cleaning of the clothes he’d arrived in), vibrant green and blue patterned shorts, paired colourful striped socks (a gift from the past fathers day from Sarah) and the white runners he left the house in the day before.

“Dad, you look like a dad. Like, the epitome of a dad on vacation,” Sarah teased, her head now poking over the back of the sofa as she suppressed her laughter, hands over her mouth.

Joel mockingly pouted, “Well, I am a dad. And I am on vacation, so…”

The first wine of the season celebrations were underway. Harvest season started in August, and followed through until October. In Italy crowned as Vino Novello, it marked the end of the harvest and translated as young wine. Grapes that had been picked at the start of the harvest and fermented for twenty days before being bottled and sold, young wine.

Your parents had insisted that Sarah spend the day with them taking in as many tourist attractions as they could, and would be with them throughout the night, per their eager request. As snowbirds living much further away than Austin, they wanted to spend as much time as possible with their only grandchild, and Sarah was equally enthusiastic.

You’d barely been able to take in the vastness of the winery and its stone villas before a glass of wine had been offered. Both you and Joel had accepted, and with your arm in his, you meandered through the vineyard, feeling the soft earth beneath your shoes and the warmth of the Tuscan sun on your face.

By evening, the both of you were slightly tipsy, having tasted some of the finest wines the region had to offer. Somewhere through the afternoon, you had procured Joel’s hat which was now perched atop your head, slightly askew. The Tuscan sun painted the sky in hues of orange, pink, and deep purples as it began its descent, casting long shadows over the rolling hills.

Joel leaned in, his arm across the back of your chair, his breath hot on your ear and you could smell the sweetness of the white wine from dinner.

“I think I recall you saying something about doing whatever it takes for me not to wear this outfit again.”

You giggled, feeling light and carefree. “Did I say that?” You leaned into him, basking in the warmth of his presence.

Joel chuckled, his fingers trailing down your arm, “You did indeed promise darlin’.”

You rolled your eyes with a smile, despite only having yourself to blame for the predicament you were presented with. However you laughed, taking another sip of your wine. It was a fruity red, and it left a warm sensation in your chest.

“How about this,” his voice husky in your ear, your knees feeling weak and thankful for being sat down, “I’ll take off one offending item for whatever it is it’ll take to get it off of me.”

You raised an eyebrow, while your heart skipped a beat at the suggestion, “Is that your final offer Miller?”

He picked up his wine glass and settled back into his seat. His eyes darkened, and he leaned back in to make an amendment to cashing in on your promise. “Shorts will be the last to go.”

A/N: A little bit of angst at the beginning (related to typical BAU casework), but mostly BAU family fluff and a little kiss at the end :)

You're slightly struggling to stay awake as the clock nears 10, then 11, then 11:10, 11:20, 11:25 when you check again, then 11:40. The party should hypothetically just be starting, what with the time between now and midnight getting shorter and shorter, but it seems like you're not the only one starting to feel the effects of the late night.

The BAU team and their partners populate a booth in the back of the bar, where you're noticing everyone is starting to slump a little bit. Morgan had been excited about the potential of everyone going clubbing together, but that prospect seemed less and less likely as the minutes wore on. Sure, many of them were used to being up late or early, working strange days and long hours, but the weight of the year was starting to set in. And although nobody had said it out loud, it was hard to be excited about the year ahead when many of them, at least from the perspective of a profiler, looked much the same. State lines and even borders blurred together, the cases different enough to keep them on their toes, but wasn't that awful in its own way too? So many ways to hurt. So many ways to kill.

You let your head drop to Aaron's shoulder with a soft sigh, and he nuzzled against your hair.

"What are you excited for?" You mumbled to Aaron, trying to start a conversation that might lift the mood.

"Well, we were planning on adopting a cat this year," He said, trying to think of other bright spots. "And we have those trips booked; New York, Aruba."

You hummed, lifting your head from his shoulder. "I forgot about Aruba. That'll be a nice trip."

"Aruba?" Rossi said inquisitively. "I can't picture you there, Aaron."

The rest of the team nodded.

Hotch shrugged. "I've never been, but we thought it might be a little quieter than Florida or the Bahamas."

"Tropical drinks on the beach, warm sun, soft sand..." You trailed off, smiling dreamily. "Maybe we should look for houses while we're there," You joked.

Aaron smiled at you lovingly. "I think we'll fit right in."

Penelope chimed in. "White sand beaches, right? Ugh, you guys are going to love it. Sleep, swimming, snorkeling... all the good S's."

You nodded enthusiastically, reaching across the table for her hand. "I've had a photo of this one beach up on the fridge for forever. I'm going to send you so many photos."

She squeezed your hand affectionately, giving you a big grin.

"There's a beach in Aruba known for its flamingos, but they're not actually endemic to the island, they were brought in by a hotel as a tourist attraction. Because they're outside of their normal area, their diets have to be supplemented to enable them to retain their typical pink color," Spencer added.

"That's so interesting, Spence," You replied. "I don't think we'll be visiting that beach but that's so interesting that they brought in flamingos."

You let out a large yawn. "What time is it?"

As if on cue, the other patrons in the bar started counting backwards from 10.

It came to you in a moment of striking clarity that the thing you were looking forward to the most was more time with the people you found yourself surrounded by. Your found family. Your soulmate. And whatever happened, whatever fresh horrors you'd face when the cases started rolling in, you couldn't imagine wanting anything else.

2013 VoicePlay spring tour roundup

VoicePlay's spring 2013 tour was shorter than their previous fall tour – just five weeks – and mostly stuck to the southeastern part of the country, but that didn't stop them from packing in the fun. They made up the concert postponed by Hurricane Sandy, visited family and friends along the way, and documented a lot of their downtime on social media. Some of the guys were particularly excited about a new short-form video platform called Vine.

Showtimes:

They started close to home with a student workshop and a concert in Lake City, FL.

Geoff and Eli got up early to chat with the local access morning show folks in Cullman, AL and promote their concert that evening.

Some venues have extensive backstage areas with unexpected benefits.

Some… not so much.

No matter what, though, there's always some waiting involved.

Which can be alleviated by creating your own silliness, or fended off by middle schooler screams (headphone warning).

On the road:

The boys left a sticker on the giant sparkplug at the South of the Border tourist attraction in South Carolina, as is traditional.

Long drives might get tedious after a few weeks, but the scenery can be very pretty.

The aromas aren't always so nice, though, especially with six guys (and occasionally a dog) in the van. So if you've ever wondered what the VoicePlay fellas smell like, apparently sometimes it's "vanilla and moonlight".

The theater kids of a cappella enjoy a bit of dress-up wherever they can find it, even if that's in the toy department during a supply run on their day off.

Tony's adorable terrier Fletcher went along for the middle leg of the tour to El Paso.

The cuteness didn't stop the guys from getting goofy during the long stretches of driving or late night shopping excursions, though.

No trip through Texas is complete without a stop at a Buc-ee's for provisions. (Which prompted Eli to give a shoutout to former 4:2:Five member Matthew "Bucky" Buckner who's been making cameos recently.)

The boys popped home for a few days just in time to see Rachel Potter in concert (with friend and future VoicePlay collaborator EJ Cardona). Layne and his then-girlfriend got a little tipsy and silly.

Fewer shows on the tour might have been easier on their vocal cords, but it also meant more long stretches in the van between gigs. At least it had a video game setup.

Feeding the beasts:

○ Earl doing restaurants' eating challenges continued to be A Thing.

Earl hot wing challenge (Layne's YouTube) The "blazin' challenge" at Buffalo Wild Wings (a dozen spicy wings in under 6 minutes) was no problem, even playing injured. He was awarded a t-shirt and the onlookers' respect.

(Eli's Vine) He polished off another 32-ounce steak at a Texas Roadhouse.

(Eli's Vine) A tex-mex plate and beer-rita on Cinco de Mayo was easy peasy. (Followed by much silliness from everyone.)

(VoicePlay's Twitter) He was only defeated by the 72-ounce steak at The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo. He gave it a solid try, though.

○ This one's more of a not-eating-everything-at-once challenge, but when your percussionist's little sister is a professional baker, you've gotta visit and stock up for the road while you're in town.

○ Lunchtime ambience is important, no matter where you are.

○ It's good to acknowledge the fans, no matter how famous you get.

○ And sometimes you just need to share your thoughts with the world, no matter how banal. (That's what social media is for, after all.)

Striking Up The Ban

I have many fond memories from the Summer of 2019. It was pre-COVID, and we were all blissfully unaware of how much our lives were about to change. It was when my employer, the Engler College of Business, was starting an MBA program in Beijing, and my Dean wanted me to go there to be the face of the program, and teach an introductory class session.

And since my daughters are both adopted from China, he encouraged me to take them along too. No arm twisting was needed on that one! So off we went to Beijing for 10 days, to teach, shake hands, wine and dine, and soak up a ton of culture.

But China is known for its “Chinese Firewall,” a government-imposed crackdown on western media. Turns out it is much more than that, as it also includes western social media, weather, sports…basically, anything American that we take for granted on our phones and computers.

Of course, when I read about this, I took it as a challenge, thinking that in the interests of international diplomacy and all that, the Chinese surely wouldn’t throw a friendly old professor in the slammer. So I downloaded a VPN service, shared it with my daughters, enabling us to post photos all day and night while we were there.

In retrospect, I bet the Chinese government actually wants western tourists to do just that, because we unwittingly became their marketing department, showcasing the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and many other cultural attractions. They were good with us doing the things their own people can’t.

Which, unfortunately, may very well become a reality for us here in the States. Just this last week a House panel voted unanimously to enforce a nationwide ban on TikTok, an unprecedented action for a nation that prides itself on the First Amendment. The American Firewall may be coming soon to a phone near you.

Now I understand the concerns, which prompted 34 states already to ban it on state-owned devices. TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company some fear is in cahoots with the Chinese government, and therefore the app presents a security threat. It’s the same kind of thinking that concerns some lawmakers about Chinese-made cars being similarly risky for our security. Maybe that’s why BYD is exploring potential sites in Mexico to build cars, because we have no problem allowing Mexican-made vehicles into the US.

But I digress.

The House panel’s recommendation, were it to be passed as national law, would give ByteDance 165 days to completely divest itself of TikTok. If it did not comply, then it would become illegal for app stores to list it.

This is a very late and reflexive response after 170 million people have already downloaded it here. As long as there are not updates to the app, the old one will work just fine. Oh, and never mind the fact that if our government would go so far as to completely block TikTok on the internet and not just app stores, we could just use a VPN to sidestep that thorny matter. Point it at Canada or any other country where TikTok is allowed to be used freely.

I am not sure what kind of information these lawmakers fear that TikTok might be extracting from us at the individual level. It would be no different from what Facebook, CNN, YouTube, et all., might be extracting from Chinese citizens, were they allowed to use our services. I know. The Chinese government more than likely simply does not want its citizens consuming western news, entertainment, and general information, lest it paint an ugly picture of their homeland. But if TikTok could be spying on us, it means we could just as easily be spying on them.

Remember this point. It always pays to put the shoe on the other foot to see if your conclusion fits.

I have grave concerns over the panel’s recommendations. I am not worried in the least what China might learn about me. Heck, the phone I am using—an old iPhone 12—was made in China. My Alexa devices were made in China. Heck, I am surrounded by Chinese made electronic devices, and so are you, and any one of them could be spying on us.

But I doubt it. They would have better luck eavesdropping on our country by sending over weather balloons.

I understand the political expedience of doing something that has bipartisan support. Imagine that…both parties actually agreeing on something. I also understand that tensions are high between the US and China, and fear runneth rampant. Any measure aimed at these fears is seen as a good thing, even if it necessarily limits our rights.

It’s a slippery slope at bare minimum, and I am not in favor of it.
