Helloooo (●’◡’●)ノ could I please request Buddha, Adam, Sasaki and Leonidas with a preteen reader (12 years old) that likes to prank the gods all the time? Like putting a whoopee cushion under Shivas or Thor seats, drawing on anyone's face if they even think about taking a nap when reader is around, only small things that can't really hurt people, and no one can stop them because reader can just teleport away or make a clone of themselves, they prank everyone but them (the characters I requested) and when they're asked why reader just says “their likeable enough” I feel like this would be so chaotic and in a way wholesome 😭
YES OM GI I LOVE THIS IUDE S< ITS SO CUTRE!!! Also i am SO SO SO sorry for the wait!! Also its platonic considering that the reader is 12 years old so-
Tumblr media
Pranking with Buddha, Adam, Sasaki, and Leonidas! Warnings: Yelling? Type: Headcanons and drabble!
Tumblr media
🍬 Buddha
Dude he LOVES pranking with you!!
I mean, how could he not?
He does blow your cover a LOT because of his loud laugh
He usually takes the heat from the other gods that are being pranked because hes just like that
He thinks its so cool that you can just make a clone of yourself!
You were sneaky, sneaky enough to get past all of Shivas wives that is. When you passed by them on occasion, they treated you like a child of their own. Showering you in gifts and hugs! But- that was besides the point, yes? Buddha had finally convinced you to do that shaving cream prank on the god of destruction. So, you both snuck into the gods room, silent as a mouse. Buddha promised you a handful of candy from his stash if you pulled this off. you knew this was going to be easy-peasy! Maybe so easy and flawless youd get two handfuls of candy!
You silently -or rather, as best you could- sprayed the shaving cream in Shivas hands. His sleeping positions were erratic, so you made sure to cover all four hands in the cream before pulling out the feather you had. Your devious acts had led up to Munin loosing one of his tail feathers, you kept it. Almost like a trophy. You handed the feather to Buddha, who looked like he was about to explode with laughter any moment. Somehow, he kept his cool, tickling Shivas nose with the feather.
The 4-armed god stirred, to then slam a handful of shaving cream in his face. He was quick to wake up, trying to look around, omly to get more shaving cream everywhere.
"GODDAMNIT [Y/N]!!"
His voice rumbled in the room, his arm lunging towards you. You knew this would happen, so you were quick to make a clone to stand. Once Shivas palm hit the clone, it puffed into dust. This caused the God to get even madder. But what made it all worse was Buddha dying of laughter in the corner.
Tumblr media
🍎 Adam
At first hes like "How do you find this hilarious?!?"
But then, you pranked Zeus..
and this opened his eyes for REAL
You had tried your best to come up with a prank for the old god Zeus, but nothing would stir in your mind. Eventually, you fell back to your roots of scaring. You hid behind the door of the Gods lounge, knowing the old man would be coming in soon. Once you had heard his distinguishing laugh, your plan was set into motion. You waited till just the right moment to pop out from behind the door. Unfortunately, you weren't far enough away from the door.
Zeus reacted by swinging his arms out in defense, causing the door to slam right back into you. The knob of the door went straight into your stomach, causing you to hit your head hard against the marble wall. You quickly fell to your knees in pain, hearing the old man guffaw and laugh about how you shouldn't scare him like that. You had learned your lesson, not to return to your roots.
You shamefully walked down the grand halls of Valhalla, coming to the garden. Adam saw you, hurrying over to see what was wrong. He was quick to help you, laying you down in the grass as he held an icepack to your head. You both laughed about what happened til Adam broke the silence.
"Little one- why dont you pull pranks like that on me? You do it on all the others.. Are you plotting a big prank on me?"
You giggled and shook your head, explaining how he was like a dad to you. And of course, who would prank their dad?
Tumblr media
⚔️Sasaki Kojiro
He's never there to watch you prank but he loves hearing you tell the stories afterwards
You had managed to prank Aphrodite with a couple fake spiders, causing her to scream and sling her food off the table. Her hench men tried to calm her down by showing her that they were face spiders. But that only made it worse. She was running from them, hiding in her own room. You had watched this entirely, trying so hard not to laugh your ass off. After everyone calmed down, you were quick to go find Sasaki.
He was were he usually was, against the fountain in Valhalla's garden. You were quick to run up to him, sitting right down next to him. You both laughed and talked as you blabbered on about your prank. He started busting out laughing when you even reenacted how Aphrodite reacted! After you both calmed down from your laughing fits, you sat back down next to him on the edge of the fountain. Sasaki knew how much you loved pulling pranks on the others in Valhalla. Sometimes even more that Loki himself! Sasaki couldn't help but ask why you didn't pull pranks on him.
"Ahaha- ah.. Now, this makes me wanna ask ya.. Why don't cha pull pranks on me?''
You sat there for a moment. Why didn't you? Well of course you wouldn't pull a prank on someone you care about so dearly! Sasaki was shocked by your answer at first, but was so happy you cared so deary about him!
Tumblr media
🛡️ Leonidas
He usually takes the downfall for your pranks because :3
helps you get the supplies and everything!!
lets you hide behind him bc he lowkey scary
Unlike the others, he is always backing you up on the pranks. He's always encouraging you. He's gonna have you writing prank ideas down on a notepad he comes up with ideas so quick. Today, you and him were walking down the halls of Valhalla. He held his cigar between his two fingers as he talked on and on about some pranks he pulled in his younger years. You followed behind closely, furiously writing the ideas down on your notepad. Leonidas chuckled as he saw you writing stuff down as you both walked. He huffed on his cigar for a moment before a thought popped up in his mind.
"Hey kid, why don't cha pull pranks on this old man?"
He smiled and pointed to himself with his thumb. He raised a brow at you for a moment, waiting for your reply.
You sat there, dumbfounded. You really hadn't thought about it.
"I guess- cuz your like the prank master! Like my mentor!"
Leonidas' eyes widened for a second as he thought about what you said. His smile grew as he wrapped his large arm around you. He laughed as he ruffled your hand with his large hand.
"Ahaha! I knew you looked up to me, but not that much! Thank ya, kid!"
YOOOOO HGHJUYGBHJ DIES honestly this was my first time writing for Leonidas and i LOVE HIM SM hes so silly!! also i kinda got carried away with Buddhas so i hope you forgive me for that. BUt i truly hope you enjoyed it!! alsi my asks are open!!

Nezha Reborn annotations - Part 2
Part 1|Part 3
Monkey asks Yunxiang whether his dad ever told him the story of Nezha conquering the dragon king when he was a kid. Most Chinese people will probably remember this story from the 1979 animation of the same title that was adapted from chapter 14 of Investiture of the Gods.
Tumblr media
More product displacement: Smirnoff, what looks to be Suntory Royal and if you zoom in on the Jack Daniels, it reads “Made in Light Chaser” lol
Tumblr media
Primordial Spirit or “god-body” is something you’ll see a lot in the New Gods universe. Known in Chinese as yuanshen (元神), it is a concept in Daoism defined to be a level of existence surpassing that of physical existence, capable of existing independently in the form of a soul. It is viewed to be the center and essence of a human's existence.
Tumblr media
Monkey breaks the fourth wall
Tumblr media
This quote comes from Liu An’s poem Nüwa mending the heavens (女娲补天), delivered Peking Opera style, down to the mannerisms. The caged bird could be a thrush or a lark. Bird keeping is a traditional hobby in Beijing that started in the Qing Dynasty and songbirds were usually kept in these cylindrical cages.
Tumblr media
I shouldn’t have laughed so hard when he accidentally killed the glasses monkey and continued his business like nothing happened.
Tumblr media
“Fire imp” (葫芦老四) is the fourth of the seven Calabash Brothers, a classic Chinese cartoon from the 80s. Each bro has a unique power, and bro #4’s power is the ability to control fire. The snake demoness is an integral part of that story, so Light Chaser’s White Snake movies might actually be set in the same universe?????
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chan and Jie are religions featured in IOTG. Chan Daoism was founded by Yuanshi Tianzun (Primeval Lord of Heaven) and Laozi, and Yang Jian is one of its disciples. Jie is a fictional religion headed by Tongtian.
Tumblr media
The most unfortunate character in this movie has got to be this monkey.
Tumblr media
“Are your training methods even legit?”
Tumblr media
Where did he get so much water? I thought water was being sanctioned.

RIP this monkey again.
Tumblr media
He built his own version of Nezha’s spear.
Tumblr media
The Six-Eared Macaque is arguably the most dangerous antagonist in Journey to the West. This deceptive creature impersonated Sun Wukong after the Monkey King abandoned his pilgrimage following a tiff with Tripitaka, with the impersonation so perfect, only Gautama Buddha and Diting could see through the pretense.
Tumblr media
Nezha’s primordial spirit manifests as his three-headed, six-armed form.
Tumblr media
Nezha is traditionally depicted with his four Astras - the Wind Fire Wheels (风火轮) under his feet, the Cosmic Ring (乾坤圈) around his body, the Sky Ribbon (浑天绫) around his shoulders and a Fire-tipped Spear (火尖枪) in his right hand.
Tumblr media
This man has gills.
Tumblr media
The Yaksa Li Gen is described as a lizard like creature with long mercury red hair, protruding fangs, and a face the color of indigo. (IOTG chapter 12).

It’s hilarious how this guy was just credited as “the traitor”.

In 2013, archaeologists unearthed a 1000 year old statue in Sichuan in that depicted a beast resembling a rhinoceros. This was believed to be the water-suppressing mythological beast Zhenshui Shenshou (镇水神兽) that was documented in the Biography of Shu Kings Written by Yang Xiong in Han Dynasty.
Tumblr media
“I taught him? I don’t even have disciples! Stop joking.”
Tumblr media
Dragons kind of have a low status in heaven (no matter how majestic they are, they are still beasts and all beasts are looked down upon by the gods), unlike in the mortal realm where they are revered.

Even in his dragon form, Ao Bing’s spinal column is supported by metal bracing.

Are we complaining about M0nkie Kid because OH MAN. Macaque's whole spiel about "reading the book". That ticked me off something AWFUL.
All that aside, I do think I realized what was bothering me the most about how far they deviated from Journey to the West. Key players are missing, like Guan Yin and The Buddha himself. Part of me gets it because Buddhism is a religion and I get cartoons (especially written by American writers) wanting to avoid religion... but other adaptations included them in some way. I just feel like writing out such a key part of the original makes it feel so off, even if I do have an understanding as to WHY.
I'm exhausted so I hope that made sense.
@ladyzerodark I LAUGHED OUT LOUD AT THAT PART LIKE BRO?? "READ THE BOOK" BRO?? YOU MEAN JOURNEY TO THE WEST?? YOU MEAN THE BOOK WHERE YOU EXPLICITLY WANT TO MURDER-REPLACE THE MONKEY KING?? THAT BOOK?? THAT BOOK WHERE YOU'RE LITERALLY A GLORY-HUNGRY CANNIBALISTIC DOPPELGÄNGER BRO??? But haha yeah that seems to be a sign that Flying Bark is taking the piss with at least some of their writing, especially given the extent to which they've gone out of their way to alter big chunks of Sun Wukong's backstory, personality, and motivations as well as completely changed the makeup of almost all members of his sworn brotherhood. Hm come to think of it that's now a whole 4 cannibalistic/people-eating figures from Xiyouji that Monkie Kid have done a lot to soften, 5 if you count the Demon Bull King lmao.
But yes you are right that presenting religious figures in children's cartoons can be a very tricky thing to do well, something that struck me from a very young age at Catholic grade school lol. I can potentially see them shying away from including such important figures as Guan Yin and Buddha on account of the whole debacle around Li Nezha--even though as you noted other cartoons were able to pull it off, and the lighthearted presentation of a figure like the Goddess of Mercy herself in the American Born Chinese series seems to have been pretty well received--but on the other hand Flying Bark did have the Jade Emperor there mainly so he could be killed so. Hm. You do have works like Uproar in Heaven as well where the heavenly court under the Jade Emperor is also pretty specifically written as elitist and very much set against a man of the (monkey) people Sun Wukong, but then again that animation was made in a VERY different cultural context than Monkie Kid...it is disappointing that so much of the religious context of Xiyouji is removed from many retellings, but as many have said before a lego show probably isn't the best medium to include it in.

Feng Shui for Interiors
Using Feng Shui principles to design harmonious spaces
Understanding Feng Shui
At its core, Feng Shui is about the flow of energy, or "chi," through a space. According to this philosophy, everything in your environment carries energy, and the way objects are arranged can either enhance or block this energy. By carefully arranging your home and selecting specific elements, you can encourage the free flow of positive energy, which in turn can improve your well-being, relationships, and even financial success.
Tumblr media
1. Start with a Clear Space
Before diving into Feng Shui, it's essential to declutter your space. Clutter is one of the biggest obstacles to good energy flow, as it blocks chi and creates stagnant energy. Take the time to clear out unnecessary items, organize your belongings, and create a clean and open environment. This will set the stage for the positive energy you want to invite into your home.
2. Focus on the Entryway
The entryway is one of the most important areas in Feng Shui, as it serves as the "mouth of chi" where energy enters your home. To attract positive energy, keep your entryway clean, well-lit, and free of obstacles. Consider adding plants, artwork, or a welcoming rug to make the space inviting. A strong front door is also essential, as it symbolizes protection and the ability to attract opportunities.
3. Balance the Elements
Feng Shui is deeply rooted in the balance of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Each element represents different aspects of life and should be balanced throughout your space to create harmony. For example, wood symbolizes growth and vitality, while water represents abundance and flow. Incorporate these elements through furniture, colors, textures, and accessories to create a balanced and harmonious environment.
4. Mindful Furniture Placement
The placement of furniture plays a crucial role in Feng Shui. To encourage a positive energy flow, arrange furniture so that it promotes openness and accessibility. Avoid placing furniture in direct alignment with doors, as this can create a sense of unease and disrupt the flow of chi. In living rooms, arrange seating in a circular or U-shaped configuration to encourage conversation and connection.
5. Enhance the Bagua Map
The Bagua map is a tool used in Feng Shui to analyze the energy flow in different areas of your home. It divides your space into nine sections, each corresponding to different aspects of life, such as wealth, relationships, and career. By enhancing the energy in specific areas of the Bagua map, you can focus on improving particular areas of your life. For example, placing a water feature in the wealth corner of your home can help attract abundance and prosperity.
6. Incorporate Natural Light and Air
Light and air are essential components of good Feng Shui. Natural light brings warmth and vitality into a space, while fresh air encourages the flow of positive energy. Keep windows clean and unobstructed, and use mirrors strategically to reflect light and expand energy. Additionally, consider using air-purifying plants to improve air quality and bring a sense of nature indoors.
7. Create a Calm and Balanced Bedroom
The bedroom is one of the most important areas in Feng Shui, as it's where you rest, rejuvenate, and connect with your partner. To create a harmonious bedroom, position the bed so that you can see the door without being directly in line with it, known as the "commanding position." Use soft, calming colors, avoid electronics, and keep the space clutter-free to promote relaxation and restful sleep.
8. Incorporate Symbols of Positivity
In Feng Shui, certain symbols are believed to carry positive energy and can be used to enhance the harmony of a space. For example, a pair of mandarin ducks symbolizes love and partnership, while a laughing Buddha is associated with joy and prosperity. Incorporate these symbols into your decor to invite their associated energies into your home.

69 (nice): group project AU
Virgil was five minutes late and not sorry about it, padding through the library with a Red Bull soda sweating in his palm and his backpack hanging off one shoulder. He replayed the message over and over in his head as he passed tables full of students and high shelves laden with impossibly boring tomes.
Study room 4. 1:00 pm. Saturday.
Only one person occupied study room 4. Some guy who was always speaking up in lecture. Glasses, nice hair, scary smart. What was his name?
Virgil pushed the door open. "Come here often?" he said awkwardly, trying ans failing to be funny. Fuck.
The other guy— Larry or Landon or… Logan! Logan regarded him with a blank look. Not even a pity laugh. Tough crowd. "Yes."
Virgil sat down. Maybe his mechanical pencil was strong enough to penetrate his skull if he really jammed it in there. A lobotomy could only improve his social skills. "So where is everybody?" Three other people had been assigned to their little group in Philosophy of Religion, doomed to produce a slideshow on the Buddhist Eightfold Path.
"I don't know," Logan said. "I was hoping you might have heard something."
Virgil shook his head. "I'm Virgil, by the way." It was unlikely that someone as competent as Logan would have forgotten, but you never knew.
"I'm aware," Logan said, scanning him with an inscrutable gaze. "You sit in the back. You take the worst notes I've ever seen."
"Hey!"
To Virgil's surprise, Logan turned his face away in apparent shame. "I could help you, if you'd like— give you some pointers, I mean. If you want to take nicer notes."
What a roller coaster this conversation was becoming. Virgil hefted his textbook and let it flop onto the table. He really didn't care one way or the other what his stupid notes looked like, but Logan was cute and only annoying sometimes, which was more than Virgil could say for the other cute guys on campus. "That could be fun. Maybe you could come back to my dorm sometime." God, where was his pencil? Lobotomy time. Now.
"That…" Logan fidgeted with his own pencil, turning it over and over in his hand. "I would like that."
"Cool," said Virgil as his heart did a belly flop into his lower intestine. "But, uh, anyway. Buddha."
"Buddha," Logan agreed, cracking open his textbook.
Logan was incredibly adept at staying focused once his mind was set on something, so all Virgil had to do was cruise along on his momentum and chime in occasionally. None of their other group members showed up. Good. They could stay gone for all Virgil cared. He had a smart hottie (or a hot smarty?) all to himself and a failsafe topic to fall back on in case things got awkward. Thank God for Buddhism.

4, 11, 15 for the manga asks?
4. An underrated gem 2023 answer: My Dear Detective on Azuki! (And Usotoki Rhetoric is very similar.) Detective stories set in early modern (~1930s) Japan, with a smart female lead and funny male supporting character! (And Shonen Jump shoutout to Akane-banashi and MamaYuyu) And Stella Next to Me was recommended to me and it's very sweet so far! General answer: Well. I mean I have my reasons, but Captain Corinth is actually a pretty decent isekai-type story that avoids a lot of (though not quite all) the things that annoy me about other isekai.
11. Your favorite covers 2023 answer: A whole bunch kept catching my eye. Usotoki Rhetoric, The Summer Hikaru Died, Wind Breaker, and Correspondence with the Universe. (Have only read Usotoki Rhetoric so far but I recently bought the others) OH and Qualia Under the Snow is so pretty (and good)! OOH and also the cover of Erio to Denki Ningyou really makes me want to read itttt
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
General answer: All the colors and contrast on Ajin! Kaiju No. 8 as well. And the gradients on To Your Eternity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
15. The manga that made you laugh the most 2023 answer: I read a lot of Asobi Asobase. I wish more of it was in the anime, I think it fits that medium really well. Equal parts humor and 'wtf'. General answer: The first one that came to mind was Saint Oniisan ('Saint Young Men') which is about Buddha and Jesus living together in an apartment in modern-day Japan. The bath house scene makes the rounds every Easter. The whole concept is preposterous and oh so funny.

Mt. Nokogiri Hike!
On April 1st, I traveled with Temple Japan's Dean Wilson to explore Mount Nokogiri. This is a historic, gorgeous mountain in the Chiba peninsula known for its extraordinary natural beauty. We were encouraged to go on this trip if we are fans of the movie Princess Mononoke, as the lush forests really reflect the scenery of the mountain in the movie.
Before we could step foot onto this mountain, the large charter bus with 45 students and 4 workers was loaded up into the Tokyo Bay Ferry to cross the water from Kurihama to Kanaya port. Apparently, if we held out shrimp chips off the side of the boat, seagulls would swoop down and snag them right out of your hand! (I was a little seasick, so I opted to stay seated as the others around me played with the seagulls.) The ocean was gorgeous and the sun was shining, signaling an amazing day ahead.
Tumblr media
(The view from where I sat on the back of the Ferry.)
Once we pulled into port, we boarded back onto the bus and traveled for a few minutes to take the Nokogiriyama Ropeway. This Rope Car took us nearly all the way to the top of the steep mountain, allowing us to take in the beauty of the forest from above as we traveled rather quickly to the top. I was very thankful for this, since just going down and around the mountain was enough to kill my calves. I can't imagine if I also had to hike from the bottom to the top. The view from way up top was breathtaking. Apparently, on clearer days, you might even see Mount Fuji in the distance. Alas, as beautiful of a day it was, the visibility from that far was lacking.
Tumblr media
(You can see the little Ropecar in yellow on the left of the image. Yeah, this is how high up we were.)
Tumblr media
This is the map we were set to follow for the day ahead. It is deceptively easy looking. It was a lot of going down and then back up, and HOO does that kill your legs.
The first of the areas we explored was The Hundred-Shaku Kwannon. This was like a crack in the mountain. You climbed over several rocky pathways and up many flights of rock stairs to reach this cavern. Inside, my group was shocked to find a massive sculpture of Buddha imprinted into the wall of the mountain. This carving was absolutely giant and served as a great point of realization for all of us in the group on how big this mountain really is. (This is not the most giant Buddha statue on this mountain. Like, woah.)
Tumblr media
After staring at the carving for a long while (and taking a few obligatory Temple Japan Instagram pictures), we made our way around and ABOVE the sculpture. This meant several more minutes of steep stair climbing, and for the first time, I noticed my legs shaking from exhaustion. Once at the top of the staircase, we were greeted with "The View From Hell." This was a fenced-in area where you could lean over and see the HUGE dropoff to pretty much the base of the mountain. It was enough to make you dizzy but was also very cool to look at. It was then we realized just how far down we now needed to hike.
Tumblr media
(I kept joking it was like the scene in Midsommar where the old people jumped from the cliff...I don't think my travel companions appreciated this much. They did laugh though don't worry)
As we made our way down the (VERY STEEP) steps to the bottom of the mountain, we kept stumbling upon gatherings of Buddha statues. They would be clustered together along the path, watching us as we made our way down the side of the mountain. Some of these statues were in tip-top shape, and some were broken in pieces. I think we happened upon at LEAST 8 of these statue gardens as we made our way down. One of these gardens was particularly impressive, called the 1,500-Arhat Approach. This area was created by zen master Guden Koga and his 27 apprentices, who then dedicated from 1779 to 1798 to carving stone figures and placing them in natural caves caused by erosion. It is known as a 'marvelous masterpiece depicting the spirit of eternal benevolence." This area is renowned by Buddhists as one of the world's holiest grounds. Many are now in a state of ruin due to the anti-Buddhist movement of the Meiji era.
Tumblr media
(In one of the caves in the large garden.)
Tumblr media
(The pillar separating the two caves)
Unfortunately, one of the main attractions of Mount Nokigiri is the Nihon Temple. This temple is entirely closed off to the public, as it is undergoing rather expansive construction. The temple is the oldest Imperial invocation place of worship in the Kanto area. An extant monument states that this temple consists of 7 shrines, 12 monastic houses, and one hundred lodges for priests. We could not even get close to it, but from a distance, it did seem rather impressive.
We hiked around the Temple area and made our way down the mountain to nearly the bottom of the entire thing. On our way, we passed by several shrines, many plants, a couple of lizards, and some rather impressive stone bridges.
Tumblr media
(One of the shrines we passed by.)
Finally, we made our way back up to about halfway up the mountain, where the massive Daibutsu of Nihon-Ji lay. This massive 28-meter-high statue was carved by Jingoro Eirei and his 27 apprentices over 3 years, from 1780-1783. This image is actually of Ruriko Bhechadjaguru Tathagata, and signifies that the whole world is "a pure field contained in a lotus world." It was constructed as a symbol of world peace and tranquility. In the late Edo period, the statue was nearly destroyed by erosion until 196, when restoration efforts began and were completed in 1969.
Tumblr media
Surrounded by Cherry Blossom trees in full bloom, and lush greenery, this area was a quiet space of retrospection. Everyone who hiked the mountain eventually ended up here, and in the field surrounding the statue we all would catch our breath and relax in the warmth of the beautiful spring day. Every time the wind would blow, cherry blossom petals would float through the air like snow. It was very tranquil.
This was where our hike was completed. We caught our breath for a few minutes, then headed on our way to get some traditional Japanese lunch and go to an onsen to relax our muscles after all the strain we put them under. It was a wonderful day and a gorgeous hike. I could not have asked for better weather, and the cherry blossom trees in full bloom scattered around the mountain just added to the luck and joy all of us felt. This was truly an unforgettable experience I was honored to be a part of.

Blame the Victim
Recently I was conversing with my tantric teacher, Kim Rinpoche, regarding a video he shared of Garchen Rinpoche. In the video, Garchen Rinpoche explains how to stay safe and healthy during the pandemic through certain spiritual practices. He goes on to explain that if you get the virus, it is due to unpurified karmas. And if you die from the virus, it is also due to impure karmas.
I then asked how this was different from victim-blaming.
Kim Rinpoche's response: "Doesn't all of buddhism blame one's suffering and misfortunes in life on one's own actions?"
The moment I read his response, I laughed. It was true.
Set aside the context of the pandemic and contemplate this teaching.
Buddha's Four Noble Truths:
(1) suffering is inseparable from the cycles of life; (2) the fundamental cause of suffering is due to ignorance (non-enlightenment), which takes many forms such as separateness; (3) suffering can be ended by means of enlightenment; (4) there is a path that can be reliably practiced, which results in enlightenment.
Put another way, if you are suffering then it is because of your own ignorance.
Does this sound harsh to you? It does to me.
But if you can tolerate the harshness, what you will find is that it is also empowering. If your suffering is solely your own responsibility then no one can stop you from liberating yourself from it. No one can stop you from becoming a buddha.
A brief aside about Karma
Buddhism is very pragmatic and often parallels scientific perspectives. Karmas can sometimes be described as causes. Everything happens due to innumerable causes (think the butterfly effect), however some of those causes have more obvious direct effect in producing certain outcomes. If I get shot tomorrow, perhaps a butterfly in Australia was a contributing cause. But the seemingly more direct cause is the asshole with a gun.
While a karma can be an outward action that creates a result, a karma can also be a fixed pattern of thinking, perceiving, believing, or feeling. Such karmas will influence the decisions and actions we take in the external world. And sometimes those inner karmas are attributed as causes of physical diseases.
Putting It All Together
When I read my teacher's response, a Lojong slogan immediately popped into my head. Lojong is a Buddhist mind-training practice intended to cultivate wisdom-compassion in even the most thick-headed of humans.
This particular slogan goes as follows: "Drive all blames into one."
Who or what is that "one" to which is being referred? Me. Or you. Ourself.
In other words, do not blame others. Do not blame circumstances. Do not blame luck. Blame yourself. Drive all blame into yourself so that you are in the position of power to change everything.
Now you may be tempted to take these teachings and apply them to injustices and suffering you see in the world around you. You may ask, for example, "How are these starving children to blame for their own starvation?"
The answer is that they aren't to blame. You are.
Please remember that these teachings should be applied only to one person: you. This is for examining your own experience of life, your own experiences of suffering, and taking responsibility for your own liberation. Nothing more and nothing less.
Like any spiritual teaching, it does not matter if you believe or disbelieve in it. The only thing that matters is if you find how to apply and make use of it for your own enlightenment.
May all beings be free.

The Prophecy fulfilled

“On meeting a buddha slay the buddha, on meeting a patriarch slay the patriarch, on meeting an arhat slay the arhat, on meeting your parents slay your parents, on meeting your kinsman slay your kinsman, and you attain emancipation.” - Record of Linji, R.F. Sasaki, p. 22
"The Shikon Jewel is gone now, but it still left us a prophecy. Kirinmaru. You will be felled by an existence that is neither human nor demon. An impossible entity that can surpass time. That is what will defeat you. You laughed it off, saying no such thing can exist, but thanks to the Great Dog-Demon, that which should not exist has become reality. That is the half-demon. They are an existence that is neither demon nor human." - Zero, Yashahime Episode 15 - Farewell Under the Lunar Eclipse
"My father cannot be satisfied unless he takes on the strongest opponent. The strongest opponent must, one have the strength to successfully break through the barrier at Mount Musubi...and, two, possess a kind heart to understand what to protect and what to let go of. - Yes. I impore you to slay my father, Kirinmaru." - Rion - Yashahime Episode 29

The prophecy in Yashahime was fulfilled, it was fulfilled by Love - "Affections Touching Across Time" It was confirmed in Animedia October 2020 that they took the first movie story elements that were Rumiko's ideas. "existence that is neither human nor demon"

"Therefore, in this work, I decided to utilize the setting of the “Tree of Ages”. In the original story, the Tree of Ages is only called “The Sacred Tree”, and that that is the tree that Kikyou sealed Inuyasha to. In the movie “Inuyasha: Affections Touching Across Time”, the setting “The sacred tree was the material used to make bone-eater’s well” was an idea given by Rumiko-sensei. Readers and fans may not have known but even for the non-original parts of “Inuyasha”, while discussing with Rumiko-sensei many times, we decided on a number of basic settings unique to the anime version and that’s how we made the work."
時代を越える想い
Literally translates to The Love that Transcends Time
“Slay the Arhat” - It means whatever you think the Buddha is, whatever idea you have of "Buddha”, that is not it. Kill that idea, and keep going. Move on from it was the message the Tree of Ages was actually giving.
Sesshoumaru was defeated by love, so was Kirinmaru.
During that, Kirinmaru is compared to Sesshoumaru
The prophecy fulfilled.

The Yashahimes’ Future
The three Yashahimes who carry both demon and human blood: Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha. The three of them have varying personalities, environments in which they were raised in, and goals for their actions. However, through the shared task of demon slaying, they slowly begin to accept one another. Though they are not a perfect “Close, in sync team”, trust has certainly budded between the girls who, together, have overcome any difficult situation. Even Kirinmaru’s attack that killed Setsuna in one stroke could not sever the bond that connects the three. Towa especially, who received a broken Tenseiga from Sesshōmaru, appears to have not yet given up on Setsuna’s life. Although it looks like the girls will still continue to face hardships in the future, we want them to clear the way to a happy future with their own hands.
“Hanyō no Yashahime” entered a short break, leaving behind many points of interest such as Setsuna’s shocking death, the broken Tenseiga entrusted to Towa, and the continued separation of Moroha and her parents. Let’s consolidate the existing mysteries and wait for the second chapter (season)!
Higurashi Towa
Faced with the death of her beloved little sister, Setsuna, her demonic blood awakens for the first time. Until now, she had been using the demon sword, Kikujūmonji, as her weapon but what is this blade… …? (referring to the promo picture for season 2)
Series Composition: Katsuyuki Sumisawa Q&A
The Yashahimes’ story with continuous ups and downs. In addition to reviewing everything up until now, please tell us about the backstory and hints to the second chapter (season)!
Q. Where do Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha normally spend the night?
A. Towa freeloads at Kaede’s house. Setsuna stays at the demon slayer’s headquarters. It’s just that she can’t sleep so she probably keeps watch outside at night. Moroha lives at the corpse shop.
Q. How far apart is Kaede’s village and the corpse shop?
A. Kaede’s village is in the land of Musashi so in terms of modern geography, imagine around Tokyo’s Nakano and Suginami ward. Compared to that, the corpse shop is in the harbor so around Shinagawa ward or maybe even Yokohama. It seems the three of them frequently met up but there’s actually quite a distance. Each of them had different goals behind their actions too.
Q. When Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha first met, how was Moroha able to figure out that the two of them were Sesshōmaru’s daughters?
A. Probably through “smell”. Sesshōmaru is well known among demons and Moroha knows that Sesshōmaru is her father’s older brother. However, Moroha still doesn’t know that Sesshōmaru is the one who trapped her parents within the black pearl.
Q. Does Moroha know her parents’ names?
A. She does. When Inuyasha and Kagome were approached by Kirinmaru and Sesshōmaru, Awa no Hachiemon (aka Hachi), the racoon dog, took Moroha to the wolf demon tribe where she was raised. That being said, Kōga probably told her.
Q. Doesn’t Moroha want to meet her parents?
A. She thinks her parents are dead. That’s why her thoughts are “There’s no point obsessing over someone who’s dead”. Hachiemon the racoon dog, didn’t watch the details of the incident to the end and assumed that “If Sesshōmaru and Kirinmaru were their opponents, they’re probably not alive now.” That’s what Moroha was told through Kōga.
Q. Why is the instrument that Setsuna plays the violin?
A. When creating the scenario, I wanted some sort of “gift” from the modern era as “something to connect the modern and feudal eras”. Therefore, I decided to give Moroha the giant backpack as Kagome’s daughter and Setsuna an instrument. In addition, an instrument that absolutely didn’t exist in the feudal era was better, so I chose the violin. There of course won’t be violins in Japan and even in the West, it had a different shape than it does now. Plus, before the current story was solidified, I had thought of a plot where the modern era was the setting so it’s a remnant of that.
Q. Did Mama Moe teach Setsuna the song she always plays on her violin?
A. While she learned how to play the violin from Mama Moe, the song was not something she learned (from her). Rather Setsuna is playing a song she once heard based off her memory. Where she heard it… please wait for the second chapter (season)!
Q. With Kanemitsu no Tomoe as a medium for Setsuna and the rouge being suggested for Moroha, each of them has had their demonic blood sealed. What about the seal for Towa’s demonic blood?
A. Towa’s is not sealed. Moreover, her demonic blood had not yet awakened. That’s where in episode 24, her demonic blood awakened for the first time with Setsuna’s death being the trigger. However, that was in an out-of-control state. Going forward, how “Sesshōmaru’s blood” flowing within her will manifest itself will be something worth noting.
Q. Why does everyone call Towa and the others “Yashahime”?
A. Ever since the spirit of the Tree of Ages called them as such in episode 4, everyone started calling them that, no matter who they spoke to. At first, even Towa and the others were like “We’re not Yashahime” or “Are you referring to us?” but as they got addressed that repeatedly, they gradually accepted the name.
Q. Kohaku’s* older sister, Kin’u, is a nun but what does his other older sister, Gyokuto, do?
*Translator’s Note: I think the publisher made a mistake and meant to say Hisui
A. She shoulders the responsibility of helping Sango create the weapons for demon slaying, delivering those weapons to the other slayers, accepting demon slaying requests around the area, and collecting information on demon sightings.
Q. Is Kirinmaru a demon of Japan?
A. No. I think talking like this will be easier to understand. Kirinmaru is one of the few greater demons who is aware that the earth is round. In that era, the only ones who have a sense of this are probably just Kagome, Towa, and Kirinmaru. Having circled the globe many times, Kirinmaru, who had traveled around the world, met the Dog General at the very end in the land at the farthest end (of the earth), Japan. Ever since then, he has remained in Japan so it could be said that he’s a demon of Japan, but his existence is on a bigger scale than that. Kirinmaru frequently reads Western books and he orders those from various places around the world. The one who buys them is Riku. Naturally, I’m sure that not only does Riku secretly read the Western books in the library, but Kirinmaru wouldn’t reproach him for such a small thing either. In episode 7, Riku called the apple a “Forbidden Fruit” but of course, I’m sure Kirinmaru has read the bible before. That’s most likely because he’s been alive since the era of myth so he may have seen Buddha or Jesus Christ in the flesh. There’s probably no way he saw Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit though… … (laughs).
Q. Point blank, what is the relationship between Kirinmaru and Riku? In a reflection of the past (200 years ago), it seemed Riku didn’t have any emotions. What exactly was that?
A. This will be revealed in the second chapter (season) as well but to give you a little hint, Riku started taking care of Zero after the Dog General died and as he healed her, he gradually began to have emotions. That’s why Riku’s way of thinking was influenced by Zero, such as “You have to destroy those that you love”.
Q. Zero lost her demonic powers when she created the Rainbow Pearls. Then what was the power she was using when she fought?
A. Zero was using the power of hexes. In this world, there is not only demonic power but all sorts of powers such as spiritual power and Buddhist power and each of them is separate. What she used was a power similar to charms and Inyougogyō**.
** Translator’s Note: Yin and Yang and the five Chinese elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth.
Q. Why did someone like Kirinmaru, who values reason, have the Four Perils, who had sleazy personalities, as subordinates?
A. Kirinmaru’s mind is preoccupied with a “certain matter” that’s important so he doesn’t really care about anything else. Hence, he doesn’t remember every single demon that has challenged or served under him and he doesn’t care what kind of person they were.
Q. In episode 21, it was surprising when Towa said “I like you (Riku)!”. To put it frankly, what do Towa and Riku think of each other?
A. Towa thinks Riku is “Riku”. She doesn’t perceive him as being part of Kirinmaru’s group. On the other hand, Riku thinks Towa is “The lady Yashahime that will slay Kirinmaru”. That’s why he addresses her as “Lady Towa”. Currently, there are no romantic feelings between the two of them. Just that, there’s probably “affection” from Riku to Towa.
Q. Why does Riku think “I only kill those I love”?
A. Because “Those who are loved vanish beautifully”. That is what Zero said in episode 23. To Zero, death is sad but to Riku, there’s no difference between dying and living and that they’re the same. Based on that, Riku came to think “You have to destroy those that you love” and he chooses to “kill” as an expression of love. That might be quite difficult to understand.
Q. Why is Sesshōmaru so cold to his daughters?
A. Just as a lion drops its cubs into a bottomless ravine, a demon’s feeling is that they only raise the child that gains strength from hardship. That is the “Rite of Courage and Cowardice”. It’s a little different from the feeling we humans have. That’s why hating his daughters or purposely tormenting them is certainly not the case.
Q. Although, isn’t separating the babies from their mother immediately after birth or having them fight the strongest beast king of the eastern land, Kirinmaru, a little too much?
A. If you watch the kabuki play “Renjishi” I think you will get it immediately. Anime is fine, but I would like to recommend the traditional arts that have ceaselessly been passed down since ancient Japanese times. Even if going to see them is difficult, researching on the internet is easy. Even the phrase “Rite of Courage and Cowardice” will show up in there. It seems that in this world, there’s no people who love their children more than Japanese people. Perhaps that’s why it can’t be helped that the way Sesshōmaru is raising his children feels very cold. However, those who watched the “Inuyasha” series I think will know but Sesshōmaru’s hearing and smell are exceedingly exceptional. He has the ability to immediately rush in, no matter how far the distance.
Q. Lastly, please tell us how production for the second chapter (season) is going?
A. Currently, we’re writing the second half of the script for the second chapter (season). The whole staff are eagerly working under this difficult Corona crisis. In the second chapter (season), we would like to create a script that is particular on the details as much as possible. In the previous series, there were many self-contained demon slaying stories but for the second chapter (season), we’ve changed the structure of the story so that it progresses with the feelings of the various characters intertwining together, just like in “Inuyasha The Final Act”. Hence, I think the impression of the story will change quite a bit. Please wait until the broadcast to see what kind of story it will be!

Anime I Watched This Fall
My first semester of college is officially over and the December holidays are upon us! I hoped to make one of these posts sooner, but I have been incredibly busy with schoolwork. Now that things have slowed down, let’s take sometime to reflect on things I’ve watched.
These anime are listed in chronological order and encompass everything I’ve watched from 9/1/2020 - 12/15/2020
Like always, they will be rated on a 1-10 scale; 1 meaning complete garbage, 10 meaning masterpiece. I will offer my thoughts on what I did/didn’t like about each show!
1. The God of High School - 6/10
Tumblr media
Despite the stellar animation from MAPPA and my high expectations, I was really disappointed by how this series was treated. Most of the story’s crucial elements were handled poorly. I finished this series feeling more confused about the plot than when I first began. The power system is really cool, but poorly explained. More time should have been spent on exposition and world building for this series, instead the fights were given the most screen time.
2.  Doukyuusei - 7/10
Tumblr media
I really liked the style of Doukyuusei. Granted, this was another movie I chose to watch primarily because of the hype surrounding it. The dynamic between Kusakabe and Sajou is an interesting one, and I also enjoy how the movies different acts were separated by the seasons. However, there's nothing that really sets Doukyuusei apart from other romance movies, its a little generic. Still, I enjoyed it nonetheless.
3.  Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 2nd Season - 8/10
Tumblr media
My opinions on Re:Zero’s second season are biased. This was, by far, the sequel I was most hyped for during the summer/fall anime season. I was so happy to see the story’s continuation and I’m looking forward to the season’s second part coming sometime in January. Re:Zero is one of my all time favorite series because of the way it handles it characters and power dynamics. I also really enjoy the show’s psychological aspects. If you haven’t already, give Re:Zero a try!
4. Saint☆Oniisan (Movie + OVA) - 8/10
Tumblr media
This was a wonderful comedy. I wasn’t sure how the subject of Jesus and Buddha living together would be tackled, but it was handled wonderfully. I was laughing for pretty much the entire movie. I love the art style and little references to both Buddhism and Christianity, plus the incorporation of Japanese culture. Saint Oniisan is a bright comedy, with two eccentric main characters. If you like a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and need a good laugh, I can’t recommend this more.
5. Clannad: After Story - 10/10
Tumblr media
Never, while watching anime, did I cry as much as I did while watching Clannad: After Story. I didn’t realize how much I related to Okazaki until I saw him grow up in After Story. I was left sobbing, especially after episode 18. I still, to this day, cannot listen to the Dango song without tearing up. The original Clannad is nothing special, but the continuation of its story its something heartfelt, emotional, and down-to-earth. I love Kyoto Animation with all my heart, and Clannad made me appreciate everything the studio has done just a little bit more. Thank you Clannad, for reminding me about the kind of person I strive to be.
6. Nakitai Watashi wa Neko wo Kaburu - 5.5/10
Tumblr media
The art in A Whisker Away was beautiful. The story itself, however, is nothing too enjoyable. I found it difficult to like our protagonist or her love interest. Nothing about this movie is inherently memorable. The emotional climax came far too early which made the second half of the film seem long and drawn out.  All in all, the movie has a wonderful concept, I just believe it could have been so much more emotional than it was. When I watch a move, I like to empathize with the characters. It’s difficult to do when the characters aren’t given the proper exposition to be empathized with.
7.  Shikioriori - 6/10
Tumblr media
This is less of a movie and more of a collection of short stories. Flavors of Youth is something you shouldn’t watch on an empty stomach, all of the food looks incredible. The same cannot beside for the rest of this feature. The stories themselves seems heavily clichéd. Much like A Whisker Away, the initial premise is intriguing, but the execution results in something that comes across as trying too hard and carries no emotional weight with the viewer. If you plan on watching, pay more attention to the artwork and animation than the actual plot. You won’t be missing anything.
8. Vinland Saga - 7/10
Tumblr media
Vinland Saga helped me get out of the rut that Clannad: After Story. Not only does this show have a great story, its action packed with lots of interesting fights. I especially enjoyed all the Nordic history embedded within the show. Its really unlike any of the other historical anime I’ve watched. I will say, it’s gory. But, compared to all the other things I watched this time around, I finished this series the quickest. Its good, its graphic, its fast paced!
9.  Mononoke Hime - 7/10
Tumblr media
It’s ironic considering how much anime I’ve watched that I have yet to watch all of the most classic Studio Ghibli films. Princess Mononoke is grittier than most other Ghibli films I’ve seen, but it’s message is positive and its characters are wonderful. I can’t really speak ill towards classics like these. I guess maybe my one complaint is that this movie could’ve been a faster pace. Other than that... I really enjoyed everything Princess Mononoke offered! I understand why it’s so popular.
10. Howl no Ugoku Shiro - 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Can you believe it took me this long to finally watch Howl’s Moving Castle? Me neither!! This movie is so endearingly beautiful. I loved every second of it, from the characters to the soundtrack. So many iconic things come from just this one movie. I would like to take this time to thank my best friend for reminding me that Studio Ghibli films are wonderful! Thank you for watching this with me, I loved it! All in all, I regret not watching this sooner!
11. Toradora! - 6.5/10
Tumblr media
Toradora took me a while to finish, just because I lost interest about halfway through. But, I powered through it, and ended up really enjoying the show! I’m not the biggest fan of the ending, but that’s just a personal preference. Somehow, this show also made me cry? I’m not entirely sure why because Toradora! is probably the thing farthest from sad. Apart from the show’s dull slice of life moments, it was super cute! A much needed light-hearted romance.
12. New Initial D Movie: Legend 1 - 5/10
Tumblr media
Full disclosure, this is the only thing related to Initial D that I’ve ever watched. My band and I watched this expecting to hear some of that iconic Initial D music, itself all we got was a mildly confusing story about different types of cars. It was cliché and frankly a little boring. Although, I am still considering watching the original Initial D just so I can hear the music in the way it was original intended. I’ve got no other opinions on this movie. It’s best not to watch these movies without the context from the rest of the franchise.
13.  Uchuu Patrol Luluco - 7.5/10
Tumblr media
I didn’t really understand why people enjoy studio Trigger so much until I watched Space Patrol Luluco. I loved all the fun references to other studio Trigger works. I loved the humor, and I loved all the bright colors. The animation was extremely high energy, and the art style fits the show’s premise. Each episode was only 12 minutes long so it was a super quick binge. If you’re looking for something quick, light-hearted and comical, this is the perfect show to watch.
14. Orange - 7/10
Tumblr media
I owe a big thanks to a tumblr mutual for recommending this show to me! This holds the honor of making me cry by episode 3! I honestly did not expect the subject matter of this show to be as dark as it was. Usually when I see the genre ‘shoujo’ I do not associate it with a love story like that of Orange. The heavy subject matter made it a little too close to home for me, but I still really enjoyed this series. It reminds me off all the good times I had with my friends in high school, and of all the regrets I carry with myself to this day.
15. 3-gatsu no Lion - 7.5/10
Tumblr media
March Comes in Like a Lion is another show that was a bit of a slow burn for me. Each episode left me feeling emotionally drained, so I had to take a lot of breaks while I was working on watching this series. Shaft, the studio behind this anime, holds a special place in my heart because I loved their work on the Monogatari Series. March Comes in Like a Lion is a little different. It’s driving force it is characters, and it was cathartic to watch our main character transform through the entire duration of the first season. I know the show’s second season is much better, so I’ll be starting that soon!
16. Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei - 8/10
Tumblr media
I loved how artsy and smart The Tatami Galaxy is, but honestly I couldn’t watch too much at once cause it would hurt my head. I also couldn’t watch this show while I was tired because the speaking rate is much faster than typical anime. The Tatami Galaxy is so unique for its medium. I loved the different time loops and the crazy animation. The characters were fascinating. The dialogue, although very fast, it also fantastic. There’s an element of humor to this unique story telling, and I enjoyed ever minute of it!
Currently Watching:
Hunter x Hunter - 6.5/10 (As of Episode 30)
Tumblr media
I pride myself in having watched a lot of shounen anime, but I was reluctant to start Hunter x Hunter for years because I thought I would find it boring. I was oh so very wrong. Considering great shows like Naruto and Fairy Tail that fall under the same category, I expected Hunter x Hunter to be subpar in comparison. It gets a low score for two reasons. One, the power system was introduced a little too late and now I’m wondering if all the fights post episode 30 will involved nen in some way, shape, or form. Two, its still on hiatus.
Two Cursed Additions For This List
Please to do not let these be representative of my anime taste.
1.  Yarichin☆B*tch-bu - 4/10
Tumblr media
I am a CLOWN for not knowing this was 18+. The only reason I watched this was to see why everyone was talking about the pink-haired boy with the glasses and tongue piecing. I know why now, and I regret it. This was a massive mistake on my part. But hey, at the least the art and ending song kinda slap?
2. Euphoria (Dropped After 1 Episode) - 2/10
Tumblr media
If you know what I’m talking about when I say Euphoria, I am so sorry. And no, I am not talking about the HBO series. Seriously, don’t google this. Don’t watch this. Don’t interact with anything related to this. You’re probably wondering, “Then why did you watch it?” I did not watch this willingly. You see, I have a very bad habit of starting anime and then taking months to finish them. I made an ultimatum with a friend, lost, and then was forced to watch this a punishment. Not a fun experience. I’m very glad there are no GIFs of this on tumblr...

Brothers Conflict: Season 1 LN - Ch11, Sec10 & Sec11
Another partial segment of the Iori/Kaname conflict, this time at the cherry blossom viewing in Volume 4, when Iori tries to drag Ema off.
Long discussion at the bottom.
Brothers Conflict Translations Index
Masaomi: “Wataru, shall we go home soon?”
Masaomi-san said while looking at his watch.
Wataru: “Ehh, already…”
Masaomi: “Because, look at what time it is.”
Ukyo: “It’s certainly about time to go.”
Ukyo-san also glanced at his watch.
Ukyo: “Any more and it’ll affect you tomorrow.”
Wataru: “Just a little longer…”
Masaomi: “Wataru.”
Wataru: “.......Ugh.”
Wataru-chan gave in reluctantly, pouting.
As Masaomi-san said, it had gotten quite late.
Outside of a few street lamps, the lights lit here and there until just now had gone out, and only moonlight shone down.
By this time, Subaru-san, Rui-san, Tsubaki-san, Azusa-san, Natsume-san who had fallen into the pond, Yuusuke-kun, and Fuuto-kun had already gone home earlier.
Kaname: “What’s this, everyone’s leaving?”
Hikaru: “Already? It’s still only early evening.”
Kaname: “Imouto-chan, you’re still good, right?”
Ema: “Y-you’re asking me?”
Ukyo-san interjected.
Ukyo: “You should go home. The only ones remaining are Kaname and Hikaru. Of the ones you could think of, this is the worst pairing.”
Kaname: “Uwah, such cruel words.”
Hikaru: “... I’m not convinced to just take myself out like that.”
Ukyo: “What are you saying? Do you think there are people more immoral out there than you two?”
Masaomi: “Now, now.”
Masaomi-san interrupted.
Masaomi: “Whether to stay or go is something for her to decide. What do you want to do?”
Ema: “Uh, um…”
In all the commotion, there hadn’t been much time to look at the cherry blossoms. That’s why, to speak frankly, I wanted to stay a little longer.
Ema: “If possible, I’d like to stay.”
Ukyo: “But…”
Ukyo-san started to say. But Masaomi-san stopped him.
Masaomi: “It’s fine, Ukyo. If she wants to, why not let her?”
Kaname: “Well said, Masa-nii, very reasonable.”
Masaomi-san turned toward Kaname-san.
Masaomi: “After all, Kaname is always thinking of her. Nothing bad will happen. Isn’t that right, Kaname?”
After being told that by Masaomi-san, Kaname-san opened his eyes wide for a moment, and then let out a loud breath.
Kaname: “I give up. If you say that much, I can’t even do anything wrong, let alone anything bad.”
(What do you mean by “anything wrong”, Kaname-san?!)
Hikaru: “Ehhh.”
Hikaru-san looked at Masaomi-san admiringly.
Hikaru: “Masa-nii, you’ve gotten impressive. What happened while I was away?”
Masaomi: “She’s changed me.”
This was said so naturally that, at first, I completely ignored Masaomi-san’s words.
Masaomi: “Well then, let’s go, Wataru.”
Wataru: “Mm… Okay.”
Ukyo: “Please clean up properly. That would be good.”
After Masaomi-san, Ukyo-san, and Wataru-chan got up and left, I suddenly felt my cheeks get hot.
(M-Masaomi-san…)
Hikaru: “What’s this, you’re only just now getting bashful?”
Hikaru laughed.
Hikaru: “This girl is amusing. I’m a little interested.”
Kaname: “Hey hey, no more, give me a break from having more guys interested in Imouto-chan.”
Kaname-san drained his glass of the remaining wine.
Kaname: “Rivals keep showing up, at all times…”
Just then, I felt the presence of someone closeby.
Iori: “Hey, I’m sorry to make you wait.”
When I turned, Iori-san was standing there.
Ema: “Iori-san…”
Iori: ”Sorry, work went overtime. Though I’m happy that you waited for me… Anyway, let’s go.”
Iori-san took my hand and started to walk away. Then, I heard Kaname-san’s voice.
Kaname: “Hold up, Iori.”
Iori: “What, Kaname-niisan.”
Iori-san looked back at Kaname-san.
Kaname: “Today’s not a date. This is a flower-viewing with the family.”
Iori: “Is that so? But it doesn’t look like there’s anyone else here.”
Kaname: “Hikaru and I are here.”
Iori: “Why must I have the flower-viewing with Kaname-niisan?”
The moonlight hitting Iori-san’s white face tinged it a faint blue.
I realized that Kaname-san’s fists were clenched tightly.
Kaname: “Because we’re family, you know?”
Iori: “We’re related by blood, that’s true.”
Iori smiled.
Iori: “But, what meaning does that have?”
Kaname: “Imouto-chan!”
Kaname-san drew closer.
Kaname: “You’re going home.”
Ema: “B-but…”
Kaname: “Just go.”
Kaname-san pulled Iori-san’s hand off of mine.
Iori: “Kaname-niisan.”
Bathed in moonlight, Iori-san glowed palely.
Iori: “Love is mightier than anything else. That’s what you always say.”
Iori-san smiled. It was so beautiful that I couldn’t help but shiver.
Iori: “I’ve also come to think that, too. Even so, why do you still object?”
Iori-san held out his hand, as if he were calling out to me.
Iori: “Say. You’ll be together with me, right?”
Ema: “... Iori-san.”
Kaname: “No talking.”
Kaname-san raised an arm to block my vision.
Kaname: “Listen to what I’m saying. You’re going home right now. ... Hikaru, take her home.”
I heard Iori-san’s voice.
Iori: “Kaname-niisan, you look like you’re doing your best, but how long do you think you can continue this?”
Kaname: “... For as long as I live.”
Kaname-san said.
Kaname: “You said it yourself. The power of love is stronger than anything else.”
Iori-san, illuminated by the light of the moon, and Kaname-san, standing in the shadows of the cherry blossom trees.
The two of them stood there, staring intently at the other.
Hikaru: “... Well then, let’s go.”
Hikaru-san pulled at my arm.
Hikaru: “We’re just going to be in the way.”
(Kaname-san… Iori-san…)
We left that place, with Hikaru-san pulling me along. My mind was in chaos, and words would not come. I could not even understand what was going on.
---
Hikaru: “... Have you calmed down a little?”
Hikaru-san said as we arrived at the apartment complex.
Ema: “Eh…? Ah, y-yes…”
Hikaru: “Liar.”
Hikaru smiled pleasantly.
Hikaru: “You’re really worried, aren’t you?”
Ema: “...”
Hikaru: “I understand. It’s natural.”
Hikaru-san pressed the button for the elevator. Empty, the elevator came to a stop on the first floor, and the light for it turned on.
Hikaru: “If you leave it to Kaname, he’ll deal with it properly. Besides, Iori will be fine.”
Ema: “But…”
Even so, I was really worried. That atmosphere was not normal. Kaname-san and Iori-san were different from usual.
Hikaru: “You know. There is a big difference between people who look like they’re going to do something, versus people who have actually done something. … Here, go on in.”
At Hikaru’s prompting, I got into the elevator.
Hikaru: “I said this earlier. I’m quite familiar with those kinds of people. So I can say with confidence, the two of them will be okay. More than that-”
Hikaru-san looked over at me.
Hikaru: “I’m more worried about you.”
Ema: “... I, I’m fine.”
At that answer, Hikaru-san smiled wryly.
Hikaru: “You really are a liar. … Still, to have the guts to be able to say that is impressive. I see, I understand now.”
Ema: “Understand what?”
Hikaru: “The reason why you have captivated all of the guys.”
Ema: “... Eh?”
Just then, the elevator arrived at the fourth floor where my room was.
Hikaru: “For now, this is my advice.”
Hikaru-san said, as we got to my door.
Hikaru: “Take a hot shower, and then go straight to bed. Don’t think about anything. Okay?”
After saying that, he steered me into my room.
Hikaru: “Well then, good night. … See you tomorrow.”
I heard his voice through the door, and then, after a while, the sound of footsteps moving away.

Comments
From the various comments I've read over the years, I get the feeling that people don't think that Iori is forceful. Which, I kind of get, since he's not as loud about it. However, reading carefully, he's still pretty... grabby. Both physically and verbally. In this scene, Iori straight up goes to Ema, grabs her hand, and tries to walk away with her. I don't know about you, but I didn't see any consent from Ema for that. (Lack of No does not mean Yes. Only a Yes counts as consent. No and lack of No do not count.) Later on, in Volume 5, he grab/hugs Ema and kisses her. In the illustrations for that scene, he pulls Ema into him so she's off-balance, and has both arms around her. Hell, she even has tears in her eyes in the picture, and when he kisses her, he has both hands holding her face.
Compare that to Kaname's kiss illustrations in Volume 1, where he's holding Ema's arms loosely, and she's still balanced on her own, kneeling on the sand. (And in the game, she had enough leverage to push him away completely afterwards.) I know both of them kissed her without consent, I get it. But one of them was a lot more forceful about it.
Maybe I'm making excuses for him, but I feel like the whole business with Kaname forcing his kiss was the writer's way to set him up to fail. Remember, in this competition, there can be only one winner. And assuming that the conflicts were planned, then Kaname had to be taken out of the running somehow and he was first on the chopping block. After the whole kiss business, I've noticed that Kaname never touches her again. Well, possessively or romantically, anyway. Which then opens him up to show his (true) fatherly/brotherly side in the later volumes.
It's pretty sad that the anime, and even the game, focuses so much on his flirty side. Which he is, for sure, but in the books, it seems to happen more when there are other brothers present? Like, it's more of a habit, or a facade. In Volume 5, in the sections I translated in my previous post, he flat out says that he doesn't like to be pushy towards women. Also, he is a host and a Buddhist monk. As a host, if he was too pushy, I doubt that so many women would come to him. At Club Buddha, where he works, he is the second most popular host/monk. (Following Ryuusei, who is not made out to be the pushy type. That said, Chiaki at number 3 is super pushy, so hmmm.) Anyway, I would also imagine that he, being a host, would be always super aware of where his hands are and what he's doing. And this is explicitly stated in the books and games, but he is skilled at reading people, so he would know for sure when Ema is uncomfortable. Secondly, from some outside reading, Buddhism is rather big on consent. And not just verbal consent, as I mentioned earlier, but actual acceptance, freely given true consent. Outside of the flirtiness, Kaname is canonically a good monk. And for the rest of the novels, he tries really hard to do good to Ema. That's why, I think his initial characterization and all that with the kiss was a contrivance. Or maybe, he just messed up; 27 is still young enough for mistakes.

Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru Chapter 4 - The Track Meet (Part 4)
Merry Christmas guys

Translation Notes
1. Not really a translation note but King calls Kakeru a “hentai” as in pervert here
Previous | Next
At the second TSU meet at the end of June, Prince finally got a time of 16:58:14. All of the members of Chikusei-sou had at last earned the right to participate in the Hakone Ekiden qualifiers.
After the race was over, the residents joined hands in a corner of the field and rejoiced. They danced in a circle with their hands still joined as their happiness intensified. They continued to turn around in their ring formation, which looked like a ceremony to summon a UFO, until a totally exhausted Prince sank down to the ground.
Kakeru didn’t join the circle, instead watching the residents from a short distance away. He did feel happy and relieved that they were able to participate in the qualifiers now, but he thought that it was too early to be that happy.
Seeing the excited members of Chikusei-sou, the runners from other universities started murmuring to each other.
“I heard that they can join the qualifiers now. That’s pretty good.”
“But there’s no way they’re going to pass the qualifiers, no matter how you look at it.”
“Well, it’ll be a nice memory, so isn’t it fine?”
They talked among themselves, laughing slightly. Kakeru could keenly sense the various implications in those laughs.
Spotting Kakeru standing a short distance away from the circle, TSU’s Sakaki approached him.
“I heard you guys are aiming for Hakone. Make sure not to embarrass yourselves at the qualifiers.”
Kakeru glared at him. He was frustrated, but couldn’t say anything back.
“Kakeru.”
Kiyose waved him over, and he left Sakaki to walk over to the circle.
“You all did a great job,” Kiyose said, showing his appreciation simply. “We’re a step closer to Hakone. From now on, we’ll train to increase our distances. But first, we’ll have a grand party tonight; after our evening jog, gather in the twins’ room.”
“Woohoo!” the twins cheered. Kakeru hid cool feelings beneath his smile. We have parties all the time, don’t we?
He called to mind each member’s best official records at this point in time.
Kakeru   14:09:95
Haiji                 14:20:24
Musa      14:49:46
Jouji                15:03:08
Jouta      15:04:58
Yuki        15:36:45
Shindou  15:39:23
Nico-chan       15:59:49
King                16:03:83
Prince             16:58:14
They were now able to participate in the qualifiers, but rather than being set free from his impatience, Kakeru’s mind was becoming increasingly filled with frustration. That was why the alcohol didn’t taste good at all even during the party in the twins’ room. Unable to join in with the rowdy atmosphere, Kakeru sat by the window.
Kiyose’s home cooking was almost entirely eaten up, and after taking a rest, the residents all began to praise Prince.
“I was afraid of what might happen, but Prince pulled through,” King said.
“Today’s last spurt was amazing. You made it to the finish line in just under seventeen minutes,” Shindou said.
“Yes. Prince’s gallant figure brought a few tears to my eyes,” Musa said.
As a reward for Prince, the twins presented him with the weekly manga magazine that had gone on sale early, which they had gone to buy from the shopping district. He immediately put aside his drink and started reading it at rapid speed. Nico-chan and Yuki laughed as they watched him.
Irritated, Kakeru muttered, “Is it that great?”
Startle gazes gathered and fell on Kakeru. Unable to stop now, he spoke again.
“Prince-san’s time is not something to be proud of.”
“Well, yeah, that’s true,” Prince agreed, nodding without lifting his eyes from his magazine.
“What do you mean by that, Kakeru?” Jouta stormed, turning on him. Even Jouji, who was always cheerful, protested with a forceful tone.
“Prince-san shortened his time a lot in three months, you know? If he keeps going at this rate, he’ll be able to run five-thousand meters in an instant by the time the qualifiers come around!”
“I highly doubt that,” Yuki quipped. Kakeru ignored him and turned to Prince again.
“Do you understand, Prince-san? This is no time to be reading manga.”
“Not at all.” Prince paid him no mind, but the twins stood up angrily.
“Stop it, Kakeru! You’ve been weird lately. It’s kinda scary.”
“He’s right. Quit blaming Prince-san. If you have something to say, say it to all of us!”
“I will!” Kakeru put down his cup and stood up, too. “We’ll never make it to Hakone if you guys keep running at a snail’s pace like this! Never! So I have no idea how you guys can drink so carefreely!”
“Kakeru, Kakeru. You’ve been drinking a lot too, haven’t you?” Shindou frantically gripped Kakeru’s ankle. “You’re drunk. Right? Just sit down.”
Musa tried to calm the twins as he held them back under his arms. However, the three first-years of Chikusei-sou shook off their seniors’ restraints and started grappling with each other.
“Don’t talk so high and mighty just ‘cause you can run a bit faster!”
“You told me to talk, so I did!”
“There’s things you can and can’t say, you know! Not everyone can run as easily as you!”
“You can say those kinds of things after you practice more! But it might be pointless no matter how much you practice!”
“That’s too far, Kakeru.” Nico-chan tried to sit up.
“Don’t get too full of yourself, you asshole!” King tried springing at Kakeru faster than the twins, but he didn’t make it.
Kiyose, who had been quiet until that point, ran up to Kakeru with a leopard-like agility and ferocity and grabbed him by the collar. “You idiot!” he yelled. “Wake the hell up! Why won’t you acknowledge that Prince and everyone else are trying their best! Why are you denying their sincere running! Is it because their times are slower than yours? Is speed the only thing you value? If that’s the case, then there’s no point in running. Ride the train! Take an airplane! Those are faster!”
“Haiji-san…”
Not just Kakeru, but everyone in the room was shocked still by Kiyose’s furious look.
“Know this, Kakeru. You can’t only pursue speed; that’s empty and pointless. You can figure that out by looking at me, right? It’ll be too much someday…”
Kiyose’s words were suddenly cut off. He staggered as the strength went out of his hands, which had been grabbing Kakeru’s shirt.
“Haiji-san!” Kakeru panicked, supporting Kiyose’s body. “Haiji-san, what’s wrong!”
Kiyose was pale, his eyes closing languidly.
“Hey, Haiji-san! Stay with me!”
He didn’t react even when Kakeru slapped his cheek.
“What do I do, he’s not conscious!”
“What!”
The room fell into panic. Yuki immediately took Kiyose’s wrist and checked his pulse.
“Twins, lay out a futon! Someone call an ambulance. Actually no, it’s faster to call a doctor. Tell the landlord to ask for a house call right away!”
Jouta and Jouji took out a futon from the closet, sobbing, “Haiji-san, don’t die!”
Shindou and Musa leaned out of the window and shouted towards the main house, “Sir, we need your help!”
A flustered Prince went down to the first floor to get water, and King, disconcerted, just wandered around aimlessly.
Kakeru, along with Nico-chan, laid Kiyose down on the futon. Even though Yuki told him not to worry so much, Kakeru refused to leave his bedside. Until the neighborhood family physician the landlord called arrived, Kakeru stayed next to Kiyose, his head hanging down.
Consultation hours had finished long ago, but the old physician was an acquaintance and immediately came running. The doctor pushed his way through the residents gathered around the futon and approached Kiyose. He checked under his eyelids, pressed a stethoscope against him, and checked for the presence of heat in his palms. Finally, he looked around at everyone and spoke a single word: “Overwork.”
“He seems to have anemia, but right now he’s more asleep than unconscious.”
“He’s…sleeping?”
The residents shifted their gazes from the doctor to Kiyose all at once. Certainly, Kiyose’s chest was peacefully rising and falling with regular breathing. It was good that he wasn’t seriously ill, but they felt drained, wondering why there was so much fuss over calling a doctor.
“I’d say he’s been accumulating fatigue from lack of sleep.” The doctor searched through his black bag and quickly prepared a syringe. “I’ll give him an injection with some nutrients. Let him rest tonight. If anything happens, you can call me again. Now, take care. Don’t let him work too hard.”
“Thank you very much.”
All of them said their thanks, and Yuki and Shindou accompanied the doctor to the front door. Kiyose had continued to sleep, even as he was being pricked with a needle, and the twins put the blanket over him again.
“It’s my fault. I made Haiji-san worry…”
Kakeru hung his head, watching Kiyose’s sleeping face. He felt frustrated and pathetic. Even Rokudou’s Fujioka had perceived that Kiyose was not in good shape, but Kakeru hadn’t noticed anything; he was so focused on running that he couldn’t even see the people he was living together with.
Prince, who was sitting across from him on the futon, weakly shook his head. “That’s not true. It’s my fault that I can’t run fast.”
Like the forest animals after learning of the Buddha’s death, Kakeru and the others solemnly gathered around the futon. Yuki and Shindou, who had returned from seeing off the doctor, recoiled at the wake-like atmosphere before they sat down on the tatami.
“If you think about it, we have been leaving everything up to Haiji-san,” Musa said.
“Yeah.” King crossed his arms. “Haiji was doing the administrative stuff like applying to meets and even cooking all the meals.”
“He worked like a coach-slash-manager-slash-dorm parent,” Jouta said.
“It’s partly because we’ve been so busy training and training, but we’ve been putting too much pressure on Haiji-san.” Shindou seemed to be chewing on bitter thoughts.
Jouji made a proposition with a purposely bright tone. “From now on, let’s at least take turns cooking. Let’s all work together.”
Sounds of agreement rose up here and there.
“If that’s the case, let’s make up,” Nico-chan said as he looked between Kakeru and Prince.
“Yes.” They both nodded, Prince readily and Kakeru timidly, embarrassed by his childish attitude.
“The twins should forgive Kakeru too,” Yuki said, and Jouji and Jouta glanced at Kakeru embarrassedly.
“Of course,” they said in unison.
“Come on, let’s all get along.” Nico-chan took the lead. “Don’t let Haiji’s dying wish go to waste. Let’s go to Hakone as one.”
“Yeah!”
The residents of Chikusei-sou gripped each other’s hands tightly over the futon where Kiyose was sleeping.
“I don’t remember being dead. I hope I’m not.”
Surprised, Kakeru looked at the pillow. Kiyose’s eyes were opening.
“Good grief, what’s all this?” He moved the residents’ arms that were complicatedly tangled over his stomach out of the way and tried to sit up.
“Please sleep!” Kakeru hurriedly pushed Kiyose’s shoulders and made him lie back down on the futon. “Haiji-san, you collapsed. The doctor said you got anemic from overwork.”
“I see. Sorry I caused trouble.” Kiyose looked up at Kakeru’s face, who was peering down at him. “But it looks like the fight is over—that’s good to see.”
Kakeru shifted to intentionally sit in seiza. “I’m sorry,” he said with his head bowed. “I’ve been so on edge and impatient for a long time.”
“Was it because the music coming from Yuki’s room is too loud?” Nico-chan said, a sympathetic look in his eyes that said, “I feel you.”
“If you ask me, it’s the creaking in the ceiling.”
Yuki’s words scared Prince, who felt guilty.
“No, that’s not it,” Kakeru hurriedly said. “I’ve felt that way since before I came to Aotake. I was just running and didn’t see much of what was around me.”
He still didn’t actually know what he should do; Kakeru still hadn’t figured out what he should be running for, other than speed. “But,” Kakeru started, lifting his face up. “From now on, I will also aim for the Hakone Ekiden seriously.”
 “What!?”
The twins’ room shook with astonishment.
“’From now on?’ What were you doing until now?” Jouji looked like he was about to jump down his throat.
“No, I just thought I would play along with it somehow,” Kakeru said honestly. “I thought everyone would get bored and quit soon anyways. I’m sorry.”
“You can train that much, even though your motivation was so low.” Shindou was deeply impressed.
“I’m not good at anything other than running, after all,” Kakeru said seriously.
Yuki shook his head with a “Good grief,” and a stunned King said, “You really are a weirdo, Kakeru.” (1)
“You’re incredible, Kakeru. You’re so incredible it’s funny.” Jouji stifled his laughter. A bit angrily, Kakeru wondered what was so funny, but then he saw that even Kiyose was nodding and decided not to object.
“I can’t stop reading manga, but I’ll work even harder too,” Prince declared, raising his face.
It wasn’t that there weren’t any ill feelings, but it was the first time that the desire to aim for the same thing had budded equally in all their hearts.
Kiyose, who was watching the scene, called out, “Kakeru.” Still in seiza, Kakeru shifted a bit closer to Kiyose, whose head was resting on the pillow.
“Do you know what’s the best compliment for a long-distance runner?”
“Is it ‘fast’?”
“Nope. It’s ‘strong,’” Kiyose said. “It’s not enough to be fast to finish a long-distance race. The weather, the course, the development of the race, your physical condition, your own state of mind... Runners calmly analyze those various factors and persist in moving their body forward even in difficult situations. What long-distance runners need is strength in the true sense of the word. We run everyday for the honor of being called ‘strong.’”
Kakeru, as well as the other residents, listened intently to what Kiyose was saying.
“As I watched you run these three months, I became more and more convinced,” Kiyose continued. “You have talent and aptitude. That’s why, Kakeru, believe in yourself more. There’s no need to be impatient—it takes time to become strong. You could say that there is no end; just as there are people who jog and do marathons even into old age, long-distance is a sport that is worth tackling for life.”
Kakeru’s passion towards running had always been an ambiguous emotion, making his mind waver unsteadily. But Kiyose’s words skillfully cut through Kakeru’s murky and wavering inner world; they were a light that flashed into his heart and flooded it, illuminating him.
However, Kakeru rebutted, partly due to embarrassment. “But the elderly can’t set new world records.”
“That came out of nowhere,” Nico-chan teased. Kiyose smiled, as if to say there was no helping it.
“I thought that way too. Until I got injured,” Kiyose said gently. “But it’s the older runners who are more likely to be ‘stronger’ than you, Kakeru. That’s what’s profound about long-distance.”
Kiyose’s words were aimed not just at Kakeru, but at everyone present. Perhaps tired, he stopped talking and lowered his eyelids.
“Haiji-san, you can’t sleep here!” Jouji and Jouta shook Kiyose.
“Shut up. You’re dismissed,” Kiyose mumbled.
Everyone quietly took their leave of the twins’ room.
Kakeru was the last to go into the hallway. As he closed the door, he turned around and saw the twins squeezing into another futon from the closet.
What is that strong running Haiji-san talked about? Kakeru was pondering it. He knew it wasn’t about arm strength or leg strength. But, it didn’t seem like he was referring to just mental strength, either.
Kakeru suddenly recalled the snow-covered field he had seen when he was little. When he had got up early and gone to the field in his neighborhood, the snow that had accumulated during the night had completely changed the familiar landscape. Kakeru had run on the white field where no one had left any footprints. He had run as his heart desired in order to draw beautiful patterns. That was his very first memory of thinking that running was fun.
Maybe strength was something beautiful built upon a delicate balance—like the patterns he had drawn in the snow back then.
While thinking that, Kakeru quietly went down the stairs, careful not to make too much noise.
The next day, the skies were clear for the first time in a long while. When Kakeru returned after his early morning jog, Kiyose was feeding Nira in Chikusei-sou’s yard.
“Welcome home,” Kiyose said when he saw him.
“I’m back,” Kakeru responded.
The morning light was shining clearly. It was the beginning of a usual, new day.
