Artist Spotlight: Laura June Kirsch

Laura has had a love for photography since the age of five. She has been active on Tumblr for twelve years now and has captured many raw moments for us at multiple events throughout those years. She’s been working on a book for over a decade, and the time has finally come to release it into the world! We checked in with Laura to tell us about her book, advice she has for young photographers, and her love for Tumblr. Check it out.

When did you realize that photography was something you wanted to do professionally?

I’ve always loved photography; it is a passion of mine. I’ve been shooting since age five and majored in photography at SVA. The plan was to work in music, but when I graduated, the recession hit, and getting a job was tough. I did not get one full-time job I applied for! As social media boomed, more photographers and content were needed, and I naturally started getting hired for these jobs. I didn’t think I could get work as a photographer—it was a happy accident that it worked out as my career.

Has evolving technology changed your process at all?

Outside of the digital shift from film (I held onto film as long as I could), not much, honestly! The sharing of photography and presenting of work has changed, though, for sure.

What brings you satisfaction in your work?

I love connecting with people and capturing raw/honest moments. When I get that perfect “decisive moment,” it’s a great feeling. Revisiting a great photograph never gets old for me.

What’s been the most challenging part of publishing a book?

When I first started shopping this project around in 2019, I was told a lot of discouraging things that I eventually ignored—like that I would need to have a major celebrity writer attached to the book and a huge Instagram following to get a publisher. I assumed you would land a publisher, and the writers would come later in the project. It all seemed like a crazy roadblock—how would an average person procure a celebrity for a project with no publisher? My book is all about the people at events, and celebrity culture is so far removed from my work and lifestyle.

The mass Instagram followers expectation drives me nuts. It’s a bummer people focus on that for evaluating work. It’s no secret that a large portion of creatives buys their followers, and I won’t play that game. Authenticity is key to me, and paying for a faux following negates that completely. It’s never crossed my mind to go that route. I think the whole public display of these interactions is bad for mental health and society overall. It’s very “Black Mirror.”

One thing I love about TUMBLR is how they don’t show those numbers and keep it about the content and community. I wish other platforms would follow this model. Ironically, I have a huge following on this platform.

Eventually, I followed my heart and started looking for a publisher sans celebrity or massive IG audience. My awesome publisher, Hat & Beard Press, saw the potential in the work and how passionate I was about this project and the communities portrayed in it. That’s what should matter in an art project! Stay true to who you are, and don’t let anybody stop you from speaking your truth.

What advice would you give to aspiring photographers?

Be yourself and go with your gut. The second you start doing things to go with the status quo, you lose yourself. Make sure you are making work that you love, not what you think other people will love. You deserve to get paid. Don’t be afraid to say no to jobs that think otherwise. Walking away is the hardest but most important thing without proper compensation. Taking pictures is a job and a skill; clients are acquiring intellectual property. That is valuable, and so are you!

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of this book! This has been a dream of mine since my high school photography class. I started shooting this project in 2008 and editing it down in 2016. It’s been 13 years in the making. I am so happy with how it shaped out and can’t wait for the world to see it. The amount of time and energy put into this book is insane. The term “labor of love” has taken on a completely new meaning. So yes, I am very proud of this and staying true to my vision.

Facebook to Launch New Cryptocurrency Soon

The excitement among crypto-buffs is palpable. Facebook, the world’s largest social network, appears to be planning to launch a digital coin in the near future. But they should not get their hopes up too high. If the firm does indeed launch what is being dubbed FB Coin, GlobalCoin or Libra, it will be a tame sort of cryptocurrency—more Bitcoin 0.5 than 2.0.

Facebook has declined to comment on the speculation, but is clearly up to something. Last year it put a highly regarded senior executive, David Marcus, in charge of a new team exploring “ways to leverage the power of blockchain technology”, which underlies cryptocurrencies. In April Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s boss, said at its annual shindig for developers that it “should be as easy to send money to someone as it is to send a photo”. It seems to be talking to potential partners, such as credit-card issuers and merchants, and financial regulators, such as Mark Carney, the governor of the Bank of England.

Facebook will reveal details about its cryptocurrency on June 18th when it releases a white paper explaining its cryptocurrency’s basics, according to a source who says multiple investors briefed on the project by Facebook were told that date.  The company’s Head of Financial Services & Payment Partnerships for Northern Europe Laura McCracken also told German magazine WirtschaftsWoche‘s Sebastian Kirsch that the white paper would debut June 18th, and that the cryptocurrency would indeed be pegged to a basket of currencies rather than a single one like the US dollar to prevent price fluctuations. The Information’s Alex Heath and Jon Victor also reported that Facebook’s cryptocurrency project would launch later this month.

Facebook declined to comment on any news regarding its cryptocurrency project. There is always a chance that the announcement date could fluctuate if snafus with partners or governments arise. One source says Facebook is targeting a 2020 formal launch of the cryptocurrency. The debut of Libra or whatever Facebook decides to call it could unlock a new era of commerce and payments for the social network. It could be used to offer low or no-fee payments between friends or remittance of earnings to families from migrant workers abroad who are often gouged by money transfer services.

Sidestepping credit card transaction fees could also allow Facebook’s cryptocurrency to offer a cheaper way to pay merchants for traditional ecommerce, or facilitate microtransactions for a la carte news articles or tipping of content creators. And a better understanding of who buys what or which brands or popular could aid Facebook in ad measurement, ranking, and targeting to amplify its core business.

Here’s what we know about Facebook’s blockchain project:

Name: Facebook will likely use the Libra codename as the public facing name for its cryptocurrency, which The Information reports won’t be called GlobalCoin as the BBC had claimed. Facebook has registered a company called Libra Networks in Switzerland for financial services, Reuters reported. Libra could be a play on the word LIBOR, an abbreviation for the London Inter-bank Offered Rate that’s used as a benchmark interest rate for borrowing between banks. LIBOR is for banks, while Libra is meant to be for the people.

The cryptocurrency will be a stablecoin — a token designed to have a stable price to prevent discrepancies and complications due to price fluctuations during a payment or negotiation process. Facebook has spoken with financial institutions regarding contributing capital to form a $1 billion basket of multiple international fiat currencies and low-risk securities that will serve as collateral to stabilize the price of the coin, The Information reports. Facebook is working with various countries to pre-approve the rollout of the stablecoin.

Facebook’s cryptocurrency will be transferrable with zero fees via Facebook products including Messenger and WhatsApp. Facebook is working with merchants to accept the token as payment, and may offer sign-up bonuses. The Information also reports Facebook also wants to roll out physical devices for ATMs so users can exchange traditional assets for the cryptocurrency.

Facebook’s blockchain project is overseen by former PayPal President and VP of Facebook Messenger David Marcus. His team includes former Instagram VP of product Kevin Weil, Facebook’s former corporate head of treasury operations Sunita Parasuraman who The Information reports will oversee the token’s treasury, and many elite engineers cherrypicked from Facebook’s ranks. They’ve been working in a dedicated part of Facebook’s headquarters off-limits to other employees to boost secrecy, though the nature of the partnerships needed for launch have led to many leaks.

Wicked: Singapore April 22nd, 2012 Cast-  Zoe Jarrett (understudy Elphaba), Suzie Mathers (Glinda), David Harris (Fiyero), Anne Wood (Madame Morrible), Elisa Colla (Nessarose), James D Smith (Boq), Glen Hogstrom (u/s The Wizard) At just over 2 hours long, this is missing a few sequences, but all the big numbers and memorable dialogue scenes are intact. It’s shot from the very front row of the stalls at the side so, although this causes a lot of problems for the brave person who filmed it, we DO get many nice close-ups and a chance to see the show from quite an unusual angle at times! Very clear sound throughout.

Artist Spotlight: Laura June Kirsch

Laura has had a love for photography since the age of five. She has been active on Tumblr for twelve years now and has captured many raw moments for us at multiple events throughout those years. She’s been working on a book for over a decade, and the time has finally come to release it into the world! We checked in with Laura to tell us about her book, advice she has for young photographers, and her love for Tumblr. Check it out.

When did you realize that photography was something you wanted to do professionally?

I’ve always loved photography; it is a passion of mine. I’ve been shooting since age five and majored in photography at SVA. The plan was to work in music, but when I graduated, the recession hit, and getting a job was tough. I did not get one full-time job I applied for! As social media boomed, more photographers and content were needed, and I naturally started getting hired for these jobs. I didn’t think I could get work as a photographer—it was a happy accident that it worked out as my career.

Facebook plans June 18th cryptocurrency debut. Here’s what we know

Facebook is finally ready to reveal details about its cryptocurrency codenamed Libra. It’s currently scheduled for a June 18th release of a white paper explaining its cryptocurrency’s basics, according to a source who says multiple investors briefed on the project by Facebook were told that date.

Meanwhile, the company’s Head of Financial Services & Payment Partnerships for Northern Europe Laura McCracken told German magazine WirtschaftsWoche‘s Sebastian Kirsch that the white paper would debut June 18th, and that the cryptocurrency would indeed be pegged to a basket of currencies rather than a single one like the US dollar to prevent price fluctuations. Kirsch tells me “I met Laura at Money2020 Europe in Amsterdam on Tuesday” after she watched fellow Facebook payments exec Paulette Rowe’s talk. “She told me that she wasn’t involved in what David Marcus’ [Facebook Blockchain] team was doing. But that I’d have to wait until June 18th when a whitepaper was supposed to be published to get more details.” She told him she thought the date was already a publicly known fact, which it wasn’t.

Then, yesterday TechCrunch received a request for a June 18th news embargo from one of the communications managers for Facebook’s blockchain team. The Information’s Alex Heath and Jon Victor also reported yesterday that Facebook’s cryptocurrency project would launch later this month.

Facebook declined to comment on any news regarding its cryptocurrency project. There is always a chance that the announcement date could fluctuate if snafus with partners or governments arise. One source says Facebook is targeting a 2020 formal launch of the cryptocurrency

The debut of Libra or whatever Facebook decides to call it could unlock a new era of commerce and payments for the social network. It could be used to offer low or no-fee payments between friends or remittance of earnings to familys from migrant workers abroad who are often gouged by money transfer services.

Sidestepping credit card transaction fees could also allow Facebook’s cryptocurrency to offer a cheaper way to pay merchants for traditional ecommerce, or facilitate microtransactions for a la carte news articles or tipping of content creators. And a better understanding of who buys what or which brands or popular could aid Facebook in ad measurement, ranking, and targeting to amplify its core business.

How Facebook’s cryptocurrency works

Here’s what we know about Facebook’s blockchain project:

Name: Facebook will likely use the Libra codename as the public facing name for its cryptocurrency, which The Information reports won’t be called GlobalCoin as the BBC had claimed. Facebook has registed a company called Libra Networks in Switzerland for financial services, Reuters reported. Libra could be a play on the word LIBOR, an abbreviation for the London Inter-bank Offered Rate that’s used as a benchmark interest rate for borrowing between banks. LIBOR is for banks, while Libra is meant to be for the people.

Token: The cryptocurrency will be a stablecoin — a token designed to have a stable price to prevent discrepancies and complications due to price fluctuations during a payment or negotiation process. Facebook has spoken with financial institutions regarding contributing capital to form a $1 billion basket of multiple international fiat currencies and low-risk securities that will serve as collateral to stabilize the price of the coin, The Information reports. Facebook is working with various countries to pre-approve the rollout of the stablecoin.

Usage: Facebook’s cryptocurrency will be transferrable with zero fees via Facebook products including Messenger and WhatsApp. Facebook is working with merchants to accept the token as payment, and may offer sign-up bonuses. The Information also reports Facebook also wants to roll out physical devices for ATMs so users can exchange traditional assets for the cryptocurrency.

Team: Facebook’s blockchain project is overseen by former PayPal President and VP of Facebook Messenger David Marcus. His team includes former Instagram VP of product Kevin Weil, Facebook’s former corporate head of treasury operations Sunita Parasuraman who The Information reports will oversee the token’s treasury, and many elite engineers cherrypicked from Facebook’s ranks. They’ve been working in a dedicated part of Facebook’s headquarters off-limits to other employees to boost secrecy, though the nature of the partnerships needed for launch have led to many leaks.

Governance: Facebook is in talks to create an independent foundation to oversee its cryptocurrency, The Information reports. It’s asking companies to pay $10 million to operate a node that can validate transactions made with its cryptocurrency in exchange for a say in governance of the token. It’s possible that node operators could benefit financially too. By introducing a level of decentralization to the governance of the project, Facebook may be able to avoid regulation related to it holding too much power over a global currency.
