“Ripening Shadows”, 2023, Colored pencil on toned paper
Tumblr media
It was great to see Lauren Mann’s drawings again, this time at Art Center Sarasota for her exhibition The Ephemerality of Being. Her work was previously part of 2022’s emerging artist exhibition Fresh Squeezed 6 at Morean Arts Center, in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The artist’s statement about the show-
Growing up and getting older is seeing time pass and recognizing you can’t do anything but try to take in every moment. It’s exhausting. It’s taking a deep labored breath and deciding to rest in the peaceful aftermath of the realization that your time on earth is finite.
This work combines delicate portraiture with the rich symbolism of inanimate objects to create new, contemporary still lives. Bright, sanguine memento moris. By carefully veiling these reminders of humanity’s brittle ephemerality behind the facade of beautiful and nuanced illustrations of ordinary characteristics and relationships found in everyday life, it compels the viewer to reflect on their own lived experiences and feelings towards mortality, comparatively to those conveyed in these works.
This exhibition closes 9/30/23.

random mannsgiving question: have you ever written about the art in heat? i've tried googling "why do vincent and justine have a GIANT NAKED MAN in their bedroom", but no dice, lmao. am also v fond of "Painting of a Man with His Face Half Hidden" that justine always purposefully stands in front of, and whatever that not-at-all-symbolic twins/lovers painting is that neil passes at van zant's.
Excuse my incredibly shitty “screenshots.” The HUGE NAKED MAN painting is insane, it’s one of so many details in Mann’s strategic placement of art within the Gustafson home, a structure I am especially fascinated by because it exists specifically to menace Vincent Hanna and to reflect his deepest fears and insecurities back at him.
Tumblr media
Is he dying? Is he having an orgasm? It’s difficult to tell, and symbolically, the difference doesn’t actually amount to much, lol. But it is a male figure who looms behind the marital bed, visually duplicating the shadow of the Absent Biological Father, whose existence was just introduced to us with Lauren.
Tumblr media
There is of course the painting of the figure next to Justine, whose gaze is cast downward and whose mouth is obscured — he will not look (what should he be looking at?), and he will not speak (to whom, about what?).
Tumblr media
My favorite: the kitchen wall! We are being shown that this is Lauren’s art, what is probably a self-portrait, and some pretty bleak foreshadowing: her eyes are red (with rage? From tears?) and her lips are blue, suggesting a cadaver. The rest is hard to see clearly, but there’s pretty obviously a suit, masculine totem of the Profession, hanging there facing the wall, with no one inside it. It's empty. [KILL BILL SIRENS]
Tumblr media
WHY ARE THERE DOLL BABIES HANGING FROM THE CEILING? WHAT???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A common motif in Vincent’s associated visuals is black encased in white, or white encased in black: it’s in the house, it’s on his ring, it’s even on his gun (ivory, to mark him as a hunter). He first sees Neil’s face in black and white. He speaks of a dream in which dead bodies accost him with their black eyeballs. There’s too much to pick apart here all at once, but that symbolism of duality and containment, darkness and light that engulfs the other rather than integrating, or that strains to break out, is heavily loaded.
What’s also black and white? A photocopy, usually — at least in 1995! — or a facsimile.
Tumblr media
Van Zant also gets some fun black and white decor, and in this case the “bad copy” is a of a colorless jungle, zebra stripes and another naked man (lol) and monochrome plant fronds. The suggestion is of a sterile, inauthentic masculinity-by-proxy, Van Zant thinking he can win a war in the streets against Neil by ordering his cronies to fight it for him, engaging in the kind brute violence he could never endure or enact himself. It is contrasted in the same scene with Neil’s authentic immersion in the gritty, razor-wired jungle of L.A.:
Tumblr media
Neil is positioned very frequently next to patches of greenery and nature within the urban matrix, symbolizing this pastoral escapist fantasy for which he yearns, that he has been trying patiently to defer but is tempted by Eady to pursue too fast, too soon. Eady as in Eve, greenery as in a certain garden…
In Van Zant’s house, we see that painting of the Doubles, and there is the suggestion of the Lover but also of the Twin, the Bad Copy. Van Zant is doing under cover of legality and propriety, or the trappings of them, that which Neil and his crew served hard time for by putting their bodies on the line. Breeden’s quote comes to mind: I did hard time for what that motherfucker does every day. When Neil executes Van Zant, he is also raging against that inauthenticity, that fundamental capitalist hypocrisy.
I could go on: the architectural stylings of Chris and Charlene’s house foreshadowing his whole character arc in Heat 2 (no way!), the painting in Eady’s house that is clearly a hand reaching out (ooohhh noooo), that in Mann’s rendition of the iconic Alex Colville painting he makes sure to show us the gun paired with the set of house keys (WOAGH), it just goes on and on. He’s a genius.

A California Christmas: City Lights (2021)
Tumblr media
This is the sequel to yesterday's movie. Also, in my research into the lead actor and actress being married, I found out that she has her own production company and she produced these movies. I have mad respect for a woman who uses her own husband to make not one but two thirst trap movies.
We open on Callie (Lauren Swickard) and Manny (David Del Rio) giving a tour to a group visiting the vineyard and Joseph (Josh Swickard) interrupts to propose to Callie. Leo (Ali Afshar) happens to be visiting to share some news with Joseph but also to hang out with Manny because they’re long distance besties now I guess. But the news that Leo shares is big- Joseph’s mom ran off with her yoga instructor and is living on a remote island now, so her right hand person is now running his deceased father’s company. We don’t find out much about this person yet, but it’s clear that Joseph isn’t a fan. However, Leo says that the company is in Joseph’s name. He would just have to go back to San Francisco to step in as CEO.
We do also get some new characters in this one. Brandy (Raquel Dominguez) is Callie’s best friend who is training to be a farm vet and is getting credit hours on the farm now. When Joseph and Callie head to the city, Brandy and Manny are in charge of the farm and taking care of Hannah (Natalia Mann) since their ill mother passed away in the time between the movies. Brandy and Manny have a super awkward romance blossoming as well. I won’t get into details because there’s a solid chance that I’m being dramatic, but it’s heavy cringe.
In the city, Callie meets lots of people, but there are two characters who are the most prominent- Victoria (Laura James) and Owen (Noah James). These two just happen to have the same last name and are married to completely separate people in real life (yes, I checked). Victoria is the current acting CEO of Joseph’s company and his mom’s right hand person, but it is clear very quickly that she hates Callie almost immediately and doesn’t trust Joseph to lead the company. Owen is a business friend of Joseph, but is also Callie’s deceased fiancé’s older brother. So. That’s a fun coincidence. Owen seems like he could go either way as being a good person or a total douche (like the guy friend in the first movie who just hung around too much) and I was leaning one way and was wrong, so. I’ll let you find that out for yourself.
This movie was harder to get through just because there were so many rich people tropes we had to experience. I strongly prefer cities to small towns in real life, but not the rich part of cities. I am staunchly middle class (eat the rich). Anyway, the conflict in this movie seemed much more genuine and I loved the resolution. I think the flashback (iykyk) was a really great way to resolve things instead of having one character do large romantic gestures. Too many of those is just manipulation anyhow. The production components were just as good as the first movie (writing, acting, music), so no complaints there. Overall, 3 stars.

THE SCRIPTED LAUREN&VINCENT HOTEL BATHROOM SCENE!!!!! ooooh boy now that was fucked up i SO wish it had been in the movie because it was CRUNCHY. Gave such a different flavor to Lauren and Vincent. I don't usually wish canon was darker because i like Vincent to have a chance but that scene I would have welcomed it, felt like I was reading the Leon script lol. Do you have any thoughts on that version/its relation to the bus stop lauren&vincent scene?... (also, the thought of Vincent missusing Lauren's prescription... HORRIBLE! I LOVE IT!)
It’s so good! Freudian, Hitchcockian, Faulknerian, and most of all… Hemingway-ian? Hemingway-ish? Whatever — in the sense that the scene is so potently symbolically reflective of Vincent’s anxiety and ambivalence: about his work, about his family, about being a war veteran, who he really is and what he really wants, the deeply repressed but inextinguishable suspicions about his own authentic desire and expression as an American Working Man. The way that social constructions of gender — their expectations, the performances they demand — heighten that anxiety and ambivalence at every point of intersection. Masculinity is a prison, but femininity is an existential threat. To be like a woman is to be vulnerable, to desire true intimacy and connection even when it is not available (ask Vincent how he knows!), to experience the most brutal emotional losses, and worst of all to be mortally victimized. Who are the women in Heat? Every single one of them that appears on screen, what do they do, what do they want, what eventually happens to them? What does Vincent see happening to them?
So every time Lauren appears on screen, or Justine for that matter, the nature of Vincent’s insecurity as a husband and stepfather — in these prescribed relations of Man to Woman — is being dredged up from the murky, fetid swamp of his traumatized subconscious and probed at on a slab under a lamp. He does NOT like this. In fact he dislikes it so much that he will do just about anything to avoid it, even when the circumstances make it actually unavoidable. If he can’t physically get the hell out of dodge (he does this a lot), he either tunes out, shuts down, or explodes.
Lauren, especially, he looks at but does not really see, because she throws a spotlight on the most uncomfortable axes of comparison and consequence: that he is every bit as absent as the actual absent father, that he nevertheless bears identical obligations as a father figure (which he is likewise failing to meet), that he is a flawed facsimile who will never measure up to the literally invisible offscreen abstract Concept of Father [KILL BILL SIRENS], that Lauren in her self-destructive emotionality and escapist withdrawal is aligning herself with Vincent, is choosing him during these episodes of feminine hysteria, is circling the periphery of something that terrifies him so deeply he straight up just refuses to look. In the original draft of the script, he is completely oblivious to Lauren breaking into his hotel and into the shower, which is pretty hard to believe for a guy as sharp and attentive as Vincent. (NB: even though Vincent has exiled himself to a hotel, home invasions are a Big Deal and VERY BAD in Mann’s symbolic lexicon, so that suggestive similarity on its own should raise your hackles.) In the final cut of the film, he strolls right past a cracked-open bathroom door and a soaked patch of carpet, like he’s blind to it. Like it’s not even there!
A bus station, a hotel bathroom, these are both physical representations of transience and interchangeability, of being untethered from a secure domestic role. A place, like the quintessentially postmodern city of Los Angeles, that is also a non-place, almost dreamlike, hyper-real and not-really-real. What is this saying about the embodiment of gender roles? What is authenticity and what is escapism? If we were committed enough to our escapist defenses, how would we know the difference?
Mann’s protagonists are all lost, alienated, running out of time, chasing after something, never finding it. They claim to know who they are, what they’re lacking, and what they’re searching for. But the instant some ambiguity presents itself — an alternative to accepted truths, different ways of seeing and thinking, a challenge to more comfortable binaries — they freak the fuck out. And I think when Mann rewrote the climactic scene in the hotel bathroom, he was having Lauren pose that challenge in a different way, with slightly altered and more harmonious subtext (given the ending of the film). I’m glad it’s what he went with. But the original version is fascinating to me and says so much about where his head was at.
TBC re: those few pages in the book with the phone call between Vincent and Lauren, because I reread them earlier, closely, and I went UH OH

Dumb Money (15): The little guys sticking it to the bankers... almost.
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of "Dumb Money". Real life story of small investers sticking it to nasty bankers. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Dumb Money” (2023). Two of my favourite actors – Paul Dano and Shailene Woodley – as a married couple in the same film. This made “Dumb Money” a must watch in my book. And although not quite living up to the similar style of “The Big Short“, this was an entertaining waltz through very recent history. Bob the Movie Man Rating: Plot Summary: It’s the pandemic year…
