La nueva grabación de Lautten Compagney llega a tiempo para alegrar la próxima estación invernal. Nos hacen viajar a través de la música de invierno, que es también el nombre del nuevo álbum. Disponible el 20 de octubre.

El álbum reúne 24 clásicos populares de los siglos XVI y XVII con nuevos arreglos. Se incluyen motetes de importantes compositores alemanes del Renacimiento y el Barroco, como Michael Praetorius, Heinrich Schütz y Johann Hermann Schein, así como canciones populares como "Es saß ein klein wild Vögelein", "Es ist ein Schnee gefallen" y "O Tannenbaum, du trägst ein' grünen Zweig". Todas las piezas incluidas reflexionan sobre distintos aspectos del invierno, como la calidez, la naturaleza invernal, la alegría navideña, la soledad o la nostalgia de la primavera. La Lautten Compagney es un conjunto instrumental establecido en Berlín. Fundada en 1984 por Hans-Werner Apel y Wolfgang Katschner, actualmente director principal, su especialidad es la música antigua y barroca. El conjunto ha interpretado con frecuencia obras corales en conciertos y grabaciones, colaborando con cantantes y conjuntos notables. Numerosas ediciones discográficas con deutsche harmonia mundi documentan el extraordinario rango y variedad de las creaciones artísticas del Lautten Compagney, ya que muchas de las grabaciones se convirtieron en éxitos de ventas. Por su lanzamiento de 2010 Timeless, con música de Philip Glass y Tarquinio Merula, la Lautten Compagney fue galardonada como "Conjunto del Año" de ECHO Klassik. También por su álbum Guerra y Paz con Dorothee Mields, que combina música de la Guerra de los Treinta Años y de la Primera y Segunda Guerra Mundial, el conjunto volvió a ser el "Conjunto del Año" y recibió el Opus Klassik en 2019.

Hierbei handelt es sich um Interpretationen ausgewählter Stücke von Claudio Monteverdi, mein Lieblingskomponist als Teenager, ich besitze bereits diverse CDs von ihm. Diese kam bei meinem Besuch bei Dussmann spontan hinzu, da ich die Sängerin so toll finde. Als mein eigener Chor den Actus Tragicus von Bach (BWV 106) einstudiert hat, habe ich mir auf YouTube immer die Aufnahme der Netherlands Bach Society angehört und da ist sie als Sopran-Solistin zu hören. Wenn sie einsetzte, war ich so entzückt, dass ich vergaß, in den Noten mitzulesen, was ich eigentlich wollte. Auf der Monteverdi-CD darf sie sich ganz allein sängerisch ausleben; einige Stücke sind eigentlich Duette und die zweite Singstimme wurde instrumental besetzt. Ein paar reine Instrumental-Stücke sind auch dabei. Meine Favoriten finden sich am Schluss, es sind Stücke, die ich schon aus anderen Aufnahmen kannte und immer gern mochte: Sento un certo non so che (aus der Oper L’Incoronazione di Poppea, die habe ich sogar mal gesehen) und Dolcissimo uscignolo.

Baroque Gender Stories

Vivica Genaux & Lawrence Zazzo, and the Lautten Compagney of Berlin have made a whole album for baroque music with gender non-conforming themes.

In the 17th and 18th centuries it was common practice on the opera stage for women to sing in trousers. Castrati (men who were castrated in order to develop their special mezzo-soprano voices)  took on the roles of  queens or princesses. 

The album contains arias, duets and baroque opera pieces by composers like George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783), Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785), Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) and Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1715-1777).

There are five different versions of Siroe on this album, an opera about a Persian crossdressing princess.

The song linked to above is about the time the Greek hero Achilles had to go into hiding, dressing up as a woman and learning to weave. Those who have seen Gentleman Jack, the TV series about the 19th century transmasculine lesbian Anne Lister, should know that she often referred to the story about Achilles in order to find out if other women loved women the in the way she did. If they understood the reference, they were in. LGBTQ people used history and art to develop a vocabulary they could use to understand themselves and each other.

Mostly Mezzo Mondays: Murrihy, Genaux, DiDonato, Cargill, and Lindsey; plus early, baroque, and galant goodies

Mostly Mezzo Mondays: a recurring (though not weekly) feature where, on Monday nights, I blog a list of the upcoming broadcasts that have caught my eye on World Concert Hall. My interests: baroque vocal music, art song recitals, and a list of favorite singers.

It’s a real mezzo-fest this week:

Paula Murrihy jumped in to sing the recital at Zeist that Sarah Connolly had to withdraw from due to illness late last month; with accompanist Sholto Kynoch, she performed works by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Debussy, Clara Schumann, and Robert Schumann, as well as a selection of Irish folk tunes. You can hear the recital in deferred broadcast Tuesday, June 4 on NPO Radio 4.*

This past Saturday, Vivica Genaux and Laurence Zazzo sang a concert of Handel arias (on the theme of “gender stories,” apparently) with the Lautten Compagney Berlin conducted by Wolfgang Katschner. It comes up for deferred broadcast Tuesday, June 4 on MDR Kultur.

I know one lucky Tumblr friend who has gone to Rome to hear her idol Joyce DiDonato in concert with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. If you’re not quite that lucky, you can hear a live broadcast Wednesday, June 5 on Rai Radio 3.

I don’t often put instrumental stuff in my Mostly Mezzo Mondays list but I happened to listen earlier today to a previously-broadcast concert with Jordi Savall and Xavier Díaz-Latorre, and it was exquisite. Thus, their concert with Andrew Lawrence-King and Hesperion XXI has caught my eye on World Concert Hall tonight. Deferred broadcast Wednesday, June 5 on BBC Radio 3.*

Karen Cargill is scheduled to sing Das Lied von der Erde in Berlin on Wednesday this week, with Simon O’Neill and the DSO (Ticciati conducting). The concert will be broadcast a day later, Thursday, June 6, on Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

Anyone who would like to hear Kate Lindsey in Les contes d’Hoffmann can tune in for deferred broadcast of a performance recorded in Los Angeles in 2017. Vittorio Grigolo, Nicolas Testé, and Diana Damrau are among her co-stars. Saturday, June 8 on KUSC.

Here’s a post-baroque rarity that might be of interest: Galuppi’s opera buffa Il mondo alla roversa. The plot, I gather, involves a fictional island where women rule over men (spoiler alert: the moral of the story is not that this is a sensible idea). This performance by the French orchestra Akadêmia features singers I’m not familiar with. Deferred broadcast Sunday, June 9 on France Musique.*

Jean-Philippe  Rameau (1683-1764), figura fundamental de la música barroca francesa, es aquí celebrado por su enfoque innovador de la armonía y su uso dinámico de los ritmos de danza. Los éxitos míticos y atemporales de ABBA, famosos por su meticulosa producción y su alcance mundial, fueron reelaborados en este álbum para el gran conjunto de instrumentos especiales del Lautten Compagney Berlin por Bo Widget, violonchelista del conjunto. La saxofonista Asya Fateyeva traduce magistralmente al saxofón la profundidad emocional y la fuerza expresiva de las emblemáticas líneas vocales de ABBA, añadiendo una nueva dimensión al álbum y realzando su innovadora mezcla de sonidos históricos y modernos.

SOBRE LOS ARTISTAS

Lautten Compagney Berlin, bajo la dirección de Wolfgang Katschner, figura entre los conjuntos de música antigua más renombrados. Fateyeva es reconocida como una de las saxofonistas clásicas más destacadas, con numerosos premios, entre ellos el de ser la primera mujer en llegar a la final del Concurso Internacional Adolphe Sax en 2014, donde quedó tercera. Su forma de tocar ha sido muy elogiada por la crítica por su elegancia y seguridad, y ha colaborado con directores de renombre y actuado con orquestas prestigiosas como la Orquesta Sinfónica de Viena, los Virtuosos de Moscú y la Filarmónica de Dresde. Fateyeva también ha actuado en importantes festivales de música de toda Europa, como los de Lucerna, San Petersburgo y Schleswig-Holstein. In Italian opera, castratos were regarded as something perfectly normal. They originally sang the female parts, but from the 1630s at the latest they took on more and more male roles. So what about the female singers? They sang both female and male parts. And if the opera role required that a woman should search for her beloved or relation disguised as a man, the criss-crossing gender game was complete. Baroque theatre audiences found these gender stories hilarious.

With the 2017 Handel Prize winner, the magnificent mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux, whose profound, warm timbre constantly gets her cast in male roles, and the US star countertenor Lawrence Zazzo, this hilarity is transferred to a 21st century context. They are accompanied by the congenial Lautten Compagney Berlin, conducted by Handel Prize winner Wolfgang Katschner.
