Mohamed Melehi (1936-2020)
Melehi is a Moroccan painter, graphic designer, muralist and leading figure in Arab abstract art.
Many of his pieces involve a wave like pattern. His bold graphic shapes and use of colour provide an alternative approach to the stereotypical depiction of waves.
These works are silkscreen prints on paper.

Rest in light.
Mona Saudi sculpts mainly in stone - one of the few artists of her generation to do so. Her forms are full of vitality, beauty and a clear sense of equilibrium, frequently returning to ideas of fertility and growth. Always starting with basic shapes, the square, circle, cylinder, rectangle, she goes on to give them movement, a life of their own – either repeating their forms, varying their depths or heights or cutting them across one another to create new, graceful compositions. Knowing she wanted to be an artist since she was 17, the artist left school early to move to Beirut to begin her career. She went on to study at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and has since had a long and distinguished career, including exhibiting in group exhibitions at Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris (2012); Salon d'Automne, Sursok Museum, Beirut, (2011-1993) and the International Cairo Biennale, Cairo (2003); In 2018, 'Poetry & Form', a survey of her works curated by Hoor Al Qassimi, was presented at the Sharjah Art Museum in collaboration with Sharjah Art Foundation. Her works are held in collections around the world and there is monumental sculpture by Saudi standing outside the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the only work permitted to grace the surrounding precinct by its architect Jean Nouvel. She lives and works in Beirut and Amman and is represented by Lawrie Shabibi.

Jordanian artist Mona Saudi  --  Jordanian artist Mona Saudi - who made abstract stone sculptures - has died at the age of 76. #edisonmariotti Luciana Souza    Several of her works are in the collection of the British Museum and a large public work is outside the Institut Du Monde Arabe in Paris.Saudi was born in Amman, Jordan, in 1945, moving first to Beirut and then to Paris, where he studied sculpture at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts.In an interview with the National newspaper in 2018, she discussed why she left Jordan, saying: "This is how I planned my life. I wanted to do an exhibition and then go to Paris.Nobody supported me. I just decided to make my life on my own, so I abolished all kinds of obstacles: family, society, etc."One of her most notable works, called Géométrie de l'esprit (1987), stands outside the Institut Du Monde Arabe in Paris.image: Mona Saudi in her studio Photo: Lawrie Shabibimusic: National Arab Orchestra: Cello Taqsim - Naseem Alatrash - 2nd Annual Gala Concert - June 1st, 2013. Ninguém me apoiou. Eu apenas decidi fazer minha vida sozinho, então aboli todos os tipos de obstáculos: família, sociedade, etc."Uma de suas obras mais notáveis, chamada Géométrie de l'esprit (1987), fica do lado de fora do Institut Du Monde Arabe, em Paris. imagem: Mona Saudi em seu estúdio Foto: Lawrie Shabibi

Darren Harvey-Regan - The Erratics
Entwining image and object, the work of Darren Harvey-Regan (b. 1974 Exeter) often sees a hybridisation of the conventions of photography and sculpture. As quietly humorous as they are frustrating his works challenge the viewer to distinguish where representation ends and the object begins. “The presentation of photographs in interaction with objects serves to highlight the inherent tensions within representation; between the photograph as an object and the image of the world it contains. In this way, I consider the photograph as being something not only to think about, but to think with.” Darren Harvey-Regan is a graduate of the Royal College of Art. His work has appeared in exhibitions and publications internationally and is part of the permenant photography collection at the V & A Museum, London. His solo exhibitions include Meralepsis, Copperfield Gallery, London (2017); The Erratics, Copperfield, London (2015 - 2016); The Erratics, Passaggi - Arte Contemporanea, Pisa (2015); Phrasings, Ravestijn, Amsterdam (2013); A Shifting Sense of Things, Sumarria Lunn, London (2013); A Collection of Gaps, Phoenix, Exeter (2011); and Fact, Room Gallery, London (2011). Darren Harvey-Regan is a recipient of the Leverhulme Trust Award (2009) and is part of the Hal Silver collective. Publications include The Erratics, RVB Books, monograph, Paris (2017); Constructed: The Contemporary History of The Contructed Image in Photography Since 1990, Routledge, New York (2017); Photography is Magic, Charlotte Cotton, Aperture, New York (2015). “Farhad Ahrarnia at Lawrie Shabibi” by Anna Seaman:
An interesting collection of art is going up at Lawrie Shabibi Gallery in Dubai for their new exhibition. Something for the Touts, the Nuns, the Grocery Clerks and You is the title of the exhibition by Farhad Ahrarnia that opens at the gallery at 6pm tonight. The main body of the show consists of cardboard collected from Shiraz, Esfahan and Tehran in Iran with gilded illuminations painted on their surfaces. There are also new pieces from his on-going wall-based Khatam series. There is therefore, a mix of high art ornamentation and discarded cardboard boxes. The artist is interested in the potential of traditional craft, emphasising its engagement with the modern and embedding various cultural sensibilities onto two seemingly incongruous surfaces.
The unusual title is taken from a poem by Charles Bukowski, a German-born American poet, novelist, and short story writer who was notorious for writings that were influenced by his home surroundings and the impact of modernisation and industrialisation on the poor and working classes.
Additional images above from Lawrie Shabibi, Selections, and Harper’s Bazaar.

Larissa Sansour, A Space Exodus, 2009,  film, 5’ A Space Exodus quirkily sets up an adapted stretch of Stanley Kubrick's Space Odyssey in a Middle Eastern political context. The recognisable music scores of the 1968 science fiction film are changed to arabesque chords matching the surreal visuals of Sansour's film. The film follows the artist herself onto a phantasmagoric journey through the universe echoing Stanley Kubrick's thematic concerns for human evolution, progress and technology. However, in her film, Sansour posits the idea of a first Palestinian into space, and, referencing Armstrong's moon landing, she interprets this theoretical gesture as "a small step for a Palestinian, a giant leap for mankind". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1YhTUtC6SI
