There's a sort of cosmic unfairness to the idea that you need to have a garage in order to effectively own shitbox cars. A garage almost always comes with a house, and a house requires its own maintenance. Maintenance that takes you away from your car. That's a huge bummer. It's nowhere near as much fun fixing leaks on garage doors as it is to fix leaks in your oilpan.
Naturally, I try to do as little maintenance as possible to the home in which I live. Legally, it would be incorrect to refer to it as "my" home, as my attorney informs me that I should try to maintain the illusion that my landlord is still alive for as long as possible. Squatter's rights are great and all, but eventually the bill collectors are going to come looking for me if they cotton on to the fact that he disappeared under mysterious circumstances, which I am pretty sure is the name of a town in Illinois.
That said, you still need to fix up your place once in awhile if you want it to serve the important task of storing all your hoarded car parts. What, you thought I kept my cars in here? No. These old batteries and bent steel wheels are worth more than any of my cars. Much more, even in aggregate. If any of them got wet, then I'd have to immediately drive very fast to the recycler to get rid of them, which would very much reduce any leverage I have when negotiating my payment. You want to seem cool and aloof when you roll up to We Don't Ask Questions Metals, and frantically powersliding into the lot with some dramatically sparking 25-year-old lead-acids undermines that entire thing.
All this is to explain why the roof of my garage is now three or four layers of tarps, duct-taped together. You might think that you recognize these tarps as being the ones on the construction site down the road, but such an accusation is ridiculous. Why would I do such a brazen, stupid theft, when the very construction workers affected drive by my house every day? Maybe because their own fancy trucks have batteries, and they'd have to stop to read off the address number written on the side of the building? That's a very good guess. Maybe you'd like a Group H7 battery, fresh out of the front of an F-250 King Ranch, for your observational skills. Just don't put it in the corner over there. It's gotten a little wet.

Battery disposal
There are many types of batteries and all of them contain materials that should be conserved through recycling.  In addition, many types of batteries are considered hazardous waste when disposed because of the harmful materials they contain.  However, most batteries can be recycled by appropriate facilities.  A quick safety tip before I tell you about battery recycling and disposal.  Keep batteries cool and put a piece of duct tape or electrical tape over the ends of the batteries when transporting them unless they are installed in a device.  Loose batteries can start a fire if they mix together in the wrong configuration.  In the US, many communities have a hazardous waste acceptance facility that will provide recycling or proper disposal for batteries.  Check with your local government for locations.  Two online organizations, Call2Recycle and Earth911 provide information on how and where to recycle batteries and other items.  A few bits of information on battery disposal:
Rechargeable batteries can be recycled at some retail locations or at hazardous waste centers.  If the battery is not removable, take the entire device to the center. 
Single-use batteries are safe to put in household trash but contain materials that can be recycled.  Most hazardous materials disposal centers will accept them.
E-Bike batteries are accepted for recycling at many bike stores.
Vehicle batteries are traditionally lead-acid batteries, so they contain significant amounts of lead and sulfuric acid.  Both are harmful to the environment (and people).  Return them to the store where you purchased them or drop them off at a hazardous waste collection center.

What do you do for work that deals with battery acid????
I sell auto batteries, and due to (successful and good!) environmental law, in order to sell new ones we have to recycle old batteries so that the lead can be reused (fun fact, something around 80-90% of the lead in car batteries is recycled lead, this is one area where recycling actually works and it's because we made it law that people have to return their old batteries when they buy a new one or else they pay a little extra). Sometimes old batteries leak slightly though, so there's tiny bits of it on the surface that you won't even notice. Which is fine, it's not enough to even bother your skin, but it WILL slowly eat through clothes, which is my problem. We also fill motorcycle batteries with acid, and even though spills are rare we do carry baking soda just in case. But even then, the worst that ever really happens is you get a little itchy, and end up with holes in your pants if you don't catch it with baking soda quick enough. And I pick up and carry batteries in the way that is best for my back, but sometimes puts the batteries right up against my crotch and upper legs so I am just blowing through work pants right now
