Madrid Ch F: Stefano Napolitano def. Leandro Riedi 6-3, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
It was almost a flawless performance from S. Napolitano, whose aggression left Riedi less to no options on return as soon as he dialed in. Trusting his groundstrokes to do most of the work, his anticipatory returns also contributed to the first-strikes that resulted in Riedi’s overwhelmingness to respond afterward, thus his +1 errors becoming prevalent in the pressure points, especially in the second set. As such, S. Napolitano managed to create 7 break points, converting 3 of them throughout the match while Riedi had 2 break points coming from the end of the match, but he was uanble to materialize any chances as the Italian went clutch on serve to close out the match.
In addition, S. Napolitano also appeared solid behind his serves. Scoring 5 aces than Riedi’s 4, S. Napolitano managed to win 80% of his first serve points than Riedi’s 63%, which helped him to get out of trouble, as well as staying firm to consolidate his position as displayed in the second set. Despite both players double-faulting just once, S. Napolitano still had the slight edge on the second serves by winning 3% more of his second serve points than Riedi, who could only win 57% of his second serve winning percentage as a result of the constant pressure from the Italian on return.
As a result, this marked S. Napolitano’s second Challenger title this year after the Bengaluru Challenger, already out-doing his 1 title achievement back in 2016 as he reached a new career-high of 125 live by the end of this match. Interestingly, his next tournament would be the Oeiras 3 (125) Challenger, as he will face the recently crowned Split Challenger champion Jozef Kovalik (match report incoming) in the first round as both of them received Special Exempts as a reward of their stellar performance this week. This could be interesting to continue the hunt, this time for the qualification seedings.

Dominic Stephan Stricker was lucky enough to train with Roger Federer in early 2020 and about nine months later he managed to win Roland Garros Junior in both singles and doubles by losing only one set in both categories. French Open 2020 junior champion Dominic Stricker recently talked about the brilliance of his countryman Roger Federer. The Swiss teenager also expressed his desire to emulate Federer.
Stricker on Roger Federer
In a recent interview Dominic Stricker talked about how he wants to follow in the footsteps of Roger Federer, even if it is unlikely for him to reach the same heights. “I don't know if there will be another player in the history of men's tennis who will play as well and win as much as he does,” Stricker said. “But you see Federer, and of course you want to be what he is." In an interview from October this year, Stricker had revealed how Federer and Wawrinka had reached out to him as well as Riedi after the match. “Roger and Stan both texted,” Stricker had told itftennis.com. “Roger texted the coach of Leandro and said to pass on his congratulations to both of us, telling us to enjoy what we’d achieved. Stan also messaged both of us yesterday in a chat to wish us good luck. Roger actually said I should improve my serve. That's what I did actually,” said Stricker. “I think my serve is pretty good now. It helped me a lot here.” There is another major doubt revolving around the dates of the 2021 Australian Open. With the 14-day quarantine in the picture, there were rumors that players could start coming from 25th December 2020. However, it didn’t stand any ground and was not considered. Now, the tournament will most probably begin from 25th January 2021 and will extend till mid-February. But, this will affect the ATP and WTA tournaments scheduled in February. The voting process has begun and now it’ll decide whether to agree with protocols or not. Fans definitely hope to see a great 2021 season beginning from the Australian Open 2021. Amidst all the issues, the 14-day quarantine seems to be the major problem for the players. It will be quite strict as the players will only be able to leave their hotel for five hours in order to eat and train. This has received some serious criticism from players like Benoit Paire and other professionals. It’s now up to the Council to take the decision on the matter. The Council has already dismissed World No.1 Novak Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil. The final decision will now depend on players including Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Apart from the 20-time Grand Slam winners, the Council also includes Kevin Anderson, John Millman, Andy Murray, and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The fourth game of the second set somehow added more salt to the wound for Riedi, who topped his erratic service game with a +1 forehand error that resulted in S. Napolitano's break of serve to 3-1. While the Italian held his serves to 4-1, he had not looked back since as he confidently was slated to get to the finish line.
Interestingly, a forehand let cord moment from S. Napolitano to win his second point of the ninth game, where he served for the match, prompted Riedi's hands-on-hips reaction in disbelief as he got overwhelmed by S. Napolitano's smooth returning. Although the Italian found three of his match points were saved, one of which came from Riedi's cross-court forehand winner to save the third match point, it was insufficient as S. Napolitano rediscovered his serve back in time to take the second set 6-3, thus securing his second Challenger title of the year.

Stefano Napolitano, who advanced after eighth seed Mikhail Kukushkin retired due to his back injury down 2-6, 1-4 in the second set after his previous marathon quarterfinal match, faced Leandro Riedi, who previously stunned sixth seed Jurij Rodionov 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) in a comeback fashion. Somehow, this match turned out to reward those who anticipated their returns on track, which was already evident since the setup.
In the third game already, S. Napolitano fumbled one of Riedi's game points with a notable smash before Riedi successfully held his game to 2-1 by trusting his inside-in forehand winner. It took two more games before S. Napolitano's anticipatory returns paid off as he caused Riedi's unforced errors creating his initial break points. Although Riedi saved one of those with his usually reliable forehand winners, S. Napolitano came up with 2 different winners, which were comprised of a forehand pass and a cross-court forehand ace to secure his other break points before its conversion to 3-2.
Without any further hesitation, S. Napolitano held his serves to 4-2. He continued the fine form toward the end of the first set, where Riedi's double-fault earlier in the ninth game fumbled one of his game points, which paved the way for S. Napolitano to generate his set point through a pass that erred Riedi's volley response for his set point. The Swiss' final forehand error, which was fired too long, resulted in the Italian taking the first set 6-3 to set himself ahead in this match.

Madrid Ch QF: Leandro Riedi def. Joao Fonseca 6-3, 7-6(4) Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
J. Fonseca tried to raise his game in the second set by trying to be more aggressive, but being impatient in the final shots sometimes caused the varying margins of unforced errors, in which Riedi tried to capitalize from. In this regard, Riedi stayed composed even if he got broken once in the second set, redirecting when necessary during the tie-breaker there. This also resulted in the creation of cumulatively 8 break points for Riedi compared to J. Fonseca's 7, converting 25% of them while J. Fonseca's sole conversion came from the said break-back in the second set.
Furthermore, Riedi had a more consistent service game than J. Fonseca. Despite the latter firing 5 aces, the former had a slight edge on his first serves by 6% with a 80% winning percentage, displaying more efficacy under pressure as the match progressed. However, J. Fonseca's second serves appeared problematic as he double-faulted 8 times compared to Riedi's 3, thus waning his second serve winning rate 11% behind the Swiss and caused a lot more troubles in between.
In the semifinals, Riedi will face sixth seed Jurij Rodionov, who stunned Benjamin Hassan 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals way before this. It could be interesting to see how their pacing determined the flow control, especially with the groundstrokes balance as a start. Starting right after the doubles final, this could be one of the exciting watches for tomorrow.

Interestingly, the second set started with two consecutive holds before Riedi appeared more aggressive, scoring 2 consecutive cross-court forehand aces to secure his early lead before J. Fonseca's +1 backhand error caused a break point creation, which was converted thanks to Riedi's volley to 2-1. The Swiss then consolidated the lead to 3-1, but J. Fonseca went back into the match due to his forehand error in the eighth game to break back to 4-4, making the match level again.
Somehow, another forehand down-the-line winner resulted in J. Fonseca's game point before he held to 6-5 moments after having to survive numerous break points. The tie-breaker then became inevitable, where the Brazilian commenced with a double fault before another backhand error multipled the lead for Riedi. Even if J. Fonseca tried his best to minimize the gap, Riedi still managed to take the second set 7-6(4), thus completing the semifinal line-up for the day.

Leandro Riedi, who earlier yesterday (local time) defeated Vitaliy Sachko 6-3, 6-2 in a straightforward manner, set up a talent-off against Joao Fonseca, who stunned seventh seed Harold Mayot 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round. In today's other talent-off of the day, this tested both players' point construction and to some extent, their patience as they build their points throughout the most crucial moments.
In the beginning, Riedi's forehand passes, one of which also created his break point, contributed to his early break (2-0) as it was converted due to J. Fonseca's double fault. The Brazilian then had a fair chance as he volleyed his way for a one-point lead at the third point, but Riedi still managed to hold to 3-0. By the end of the next game, J. Fonseca already put his name on the board by holding to 3-1 even though he had to take a medical timeout beforehand.
Subsequently, J. Fonseca started the next game with his classic forehand down-the-line winner before a random point construction appeared, starting J. Fonseca's drop shot to Riedi's tweener, which passed the former's forehand side, which happened moments before Riedi consolidated to 4-1. Furthermore, J. Fonseca also had a one-point lead through his backhand down-the-line winner, but Riedi still held his service game to 5-2. Ultimately, even though Riedi had one set point randomly saved through a volley error, he still took the first set 6-3 to affirm his solid start in this match.

Madrid Ch R2: Leandro Riedi def. Vitaliy Sachko 6-3, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Riedi dominated the play from the start of the match, out-pacing V. Sachko until he left out of options as the match progressed. Not only he continued through his tidy point construction from the baseline until the net, but his anticipation also played a significant role in making V. Sachko erring his final shots. This way, Riedi generated 6 break points and converted 50% of them, while V. Sachko did not have any chance to create or convert his chances.
Furthermore, Riedi also had a solid service game by the end of this match. Scoring 4 aces than V. Sachko’s 1, he had an exceptional first serve winning percentage at 89%, 26% more than V. Sachko to avoid even more troubles along the way. On the other hand, V. Sachko’s second-serve follow-ups are often problematic as he got overwhelmed in dealing with Riedi’s first strikes, outhitting his +1 shots that resulted in his ability to only win 37% of his second serve points, 23% lesser than Riedi, who still managed to win 60% of his second serve points despite double-faulting thrice.
In tomorrow’s quarterfinals, which will headline the late afternoon play, Riedi will play the winner between Joao Fonseca or seventh seed Harold Mayot, which match is still ongoing as this was written. This could be an intriguing match-up where their balance of power is tested in their point construction, taking into account both players’ capabilities to execute some brilliant points along the way. The likelihood to deliver will also depend on their execution consistency, which makes this match one of those must-watch/follow singles matches for the day!
