Book five, the one where a chunk of the main cast joins a circus, a real thing that I swear happened.

Probably my favourite chapter of the whole series so far, if only because it was one of the most striking and extreme turns, an absolute game-changer. It was also gloriously prepared by the start of the book. I am so excited for what comes next for them.

I’m so sad about Min where I am in the series right now (84% of the way through Lord of Chaos). She went from someone who marched to the beat of her own drum to someone who is all about Rand all the time and is like, wearing dresses and perfume just for him. I feel like she has *less* personality now than in earlier books. And she feels like the least developed of Rand’s love interests despite quite a bit of POV time (especially compared to Aviendha who feels much more developed but we’ve barely gotten first person). At this point it feels like Min is only one of Rand’s love interests so that he can have access to her foretelling power… I’m really hoping this changes as the series goes on.

It reminds me of the way the book takes the two most powerful women in the world (Siuan and Leane) and essentially “puts them in their place” by making them youthful and pretty young women so they’re like ~suitable~ for male partnership and seem more pliable. This book is obsessed with making Siuan subservient and while she handles it well, the vast majority of it feels excessive and like a weird fetish thing of taming strong women. And it makes me especially mad because Gareth Byrne is old! If he has to be with Siuan why can’t it be the original, older looking Siuan? And Leane loses her entire personality to just become “male attention seeker” for at least a full book now.

It really seems like every female character in these books so far except Egwene (and Elayne maybe - but sadly including Nynaeve) ultimately wants to be a young and beautiful object of feminine desire for men - even the characters that otherwise have a rich personality. It makes me so sad.

noticed a detail in the new wotshow clip that may or may not have been intentional and that i may or may not be reading too far into but i’m going a little insane over it either way

heyyyy so what do we notice about the dresses of the aes sedai here. check out the colors.

leane is wearing the color of the ajah she came from. the colors are light enough to be immediately recognizable as blue:

she’s also shown standing physically in the light on several occasions compared to sheriam and liandrin, making this difference more obvious.

sheriam and liandrin also appear to be wearing their ajah colors, but compared to leane they are extremely dark:

and unlike leane, they both stay where they are and never step into the light.

the combined effect, especially if you are focused on nynaeve here, is that leane is wearing blue and sheriam and liandrin almost appear to be wearing black.
