So I’ve been taking Norwegian for a few years and am pretty good, I can read books and understand if someone is speaking to me. But today I decided to play geoguessr map games but with Norsk Bokmål(Norwegian) as my language. And I learned something wonderful. Norwegians call Austria, Østrikke, which sounds normal, until you realize that it directly translates to “Cheese Kingdom”
I love this language

hii which resources do you use for studying norwegian? like which books websites etc? i am also trying to study norwegian but i struggle with finding resources so :(
Hei hei!! I remember answering a similar question a few years ago! I'm happy to share all of the resources I use again 💌✨
These are the textbooks I use:
Colloquial Norwegian by Margaret Hayford O'Leary, Torunn Andresen
Short Stories in Norwegian by Olly Richards
Norsk På 1-2-3 by Elisabeth Ellingsen, Kirsti Mac Donald
These are the apps I use:
Duolingo
Drops
Memrise
These are the YouTube channels I watch:
Simple Norwegian
Norwegian Class 101
These are the websites I use:
learnalanguage.com
101languages.net
mylanguages.org
50languages.com
One thing I like doing when I practice a language is trying to bake or cook from the recipes in my target language! Here, you can find many recipes:
meny.no
matprat.no
godt.no
I also try to watch some random vloggers and listen to some music!
Here, you can find the playlist I made for Norwegian on Spotify
Hope this is helpful! If you ever want to practice or chat, I'm always here! 💌

I've been feeling pretty burned out this week. Sunday I watched an episode of Pokemon and it made me sad and then I didn't really recover from that before I went into my busiest school week. 20 classes vs my normal average of 14, and the train times are awkward so I have to get to the classroom really early and don't get home until almost 11pm Tuesday - Friday.
But the good news is that NaNo is finished, so now I no longer have to push myself to write 1700 words a day every day. I'm really glad I did it and I'll do NaNo again next year if possible, but I think pushing myself to get all the badges wasn't super beneficial to my mental health. I'm still very proud of what I achieved though!
So yeah, lots of minimal effort studying this week. Hopefully this coming week I'll be feeling a bit more up to proper studying.
Progress updates? Eh, none really this week. I remembered the meanings of a few words in quizzes on Renshuu a bit more easily that I did previously, but that's about it. It's still worth mentioning though because any progress, no matter how small, is still progress, right?

Norwegian Word of the Day 14/02/24
skritt (n) - crotch
et skritt | skrittet | skritt | skritta, skrittene
Bonus Vocab
skrev (n) - crotch
lyske (m) - groin
kjønnsorgan (n) - genitals
penis (m) - penis
skjede (m), vagina (m) - vagina
livmor (m/f) - uterus, womb
livmorhals (m) - cervix
testikkel (m) - testicle
tiss (m) - euphamism/slightly more childish way to say genitals
And some more vulgar words...
pikk (m) - dick
kuk, kukk (m) - cock
mus (m/f) - pussy (lit. 'mouse')
å knulle - to fuck
å pule - to fuck
More Fucking Grammar
Note: knulle/pule only refer to the actions and aren't really used as random expletives the way we might use 'fuck' or 'fucking' in English:
If you stubbed your toe, you'd probably shout "faen!" (lit. "devil") or maybe "fy faen!" for extra emphasis (you can use "fy søren" as a euphamism if you're in more polite company)
If you want to use it as an intensifier (e.g. "that was fucking tiring), you'd probably use "jævlig" ("det var jævlig slitsomt") although I believe it's okay to use "jævla" too (don't quote me on that)
If you want to use it as an adjective ("you fucking idiot!") you would use either "jævlig" or "jævla" ("din jævla tosk!") Jævla is more like... you fucking IDIOT, whereas jævlig is more like... you're a shit person and also an idiot? I think?? That's the nuance I get anyway.
You can also just use "jævlig" on its own ("det var helt jævlig" = that was fucking awful, "du ser jævlig ut" = you look like shit)
If you're at an advanced enough level to read articles in Norwegian, you can read more about the nuances between jævla and jævlig here.

One thing that is absolutely beautiful in Norwegian is that, while we have gendered nouns, you can write, correctly, "en jente" (en = masc, ei = fem, et = neu) (en/ei jente = a girl).
You can do it with every word (fem -> masc). "Jeg tok en bok fra bordet og ga den til jenten som vant lesekonkurransen". [I took a book from the table and gave it to the girl who won the reading competition.
Note: this only applies to bokmål.

I don't talk about my Norwegian progress much these days (because I'm trying to maintain more than learn so I'm not really making any) but I've become a lot more comfortable reading nynorsk now. I used to hesitate before clicking on articles in nynorsk because they took that little bit more effort, but now I literally don't even think about it. So that's something.
