catsi replied to your post “HEY here's smth i've been thinking about lately: who on 205 Live would...”
AAAAHHHH BUZZ I LOVE THIS HOLY FUCK. I WAS SAT GLUED TO MY FUCKING SCREEN THE ENTIRE TIME I READ THIS. YES. I LOVE THIS i love the idea of using ariya's honour, which is so important to him and until now had been part of his motivation as a heel, to leverage a face turn. because ariya DOES love his friends, so much, and he honours what they have together more than a title shot at some weak rat bastard
god god yeah i love this. people giving up title opportunities in the name of a greater good always get at my heart strings. ariya defending drews goofy ass is so good. having a face turn involve a heel protecting a lovable comedy heel from a repulsive monster heel is SUCH a smart move
AND THE FIGHT WITH BRIAN AND ARIYA AND MUSTAFA AND AKIRA IS SO SMART TOO. ariya using that hammerlock lariat to set up for mustafas 054 is SO GOOD. i can totally picture akira outside the ring during brian getting his ass whooped like :O :D
buzz this is a VERY VERY good answer omg thank u reading this made me so happy!!!!!!! i love reading ur fantasy bookings
THANK YOU SO MUCH..............I LOVE.........205 AND TALKING ABOUT 205 thank you so so so much for asking in the first place, omg
i really REALLY love the possibilities for face/heel dynamics in wrestling, and i love getting into them in ways that are more...nuanced? i guess? is the word? like, wwe’s got a pretty strict line separating heels and faces, and we don’t usually see things more complex than that, but getting into it is really interesting? i don’t know how to word it, but actually seeing how someone’s face traits carry over into a heel persona, or vice versa, is pretty rare. when someone turns heel they can kind of lose what qualities made them a face, and it’s interesting in its own way but also there’s SO...MUCH YOU CAN DO with thinking about how different traits can come across differently depending on someone’s alignment!
i really SUPER do not know how to word things holy shit i’m sorry, but! i feel like...one trait that quite a few heels in wwe have is that they’re actually really closely knit and loyal to each other. billie kay and peyton royce fall into this, tony and drew ESPECIALLY fall into this but so does ariya, SAnitY falls into this (though they’re more Chaotic Neutral now, iirc! which is VERY GOOD i love them), there’s a tendency among heels to just flock together. and there’s a FEW things to say about that, like, how depending on others for support is seen as weaker or more pathetic, and how standing alone and refusing help is heroic! or, man, how these interactions can fall into ambiguously romantic territory and how coding heels as gay is A Thing That Happens (breezango’s heel personas fell into that, jericho’s heel persona does that, mickie and paige and aj lee all fell into that i think which is its OWN issue, it’s just...a running thing)
but i think that honestly that’s not a heel trait at all, and that’s not to say face teams won’t do the same thing. i think that...without being told how to feel about it, audiences will appreciate and cheer for people who want to look out for the people they love. even if those people are heels. there’s something sweet about it, something heroic, there’s something that’s almost noble about it. relationships like...like bayley and sasha! like rich and tj pre-True Heel Turn. like braun and the entire 205 roster. people looking out for each other across alignments. that resonates with people. and i think that that’s a good basis for a heel-face turn.
especially bringing in the idea of how different types of heels interact. infighting among heels is a lot more common than it is among faces but you don’t usually get to explore how that can make certain heels more sympathetic, or how it can justify someone becoming a face on the basis of fighting a monster heel. if that...makes ANY goddamn sense im sorry im throwing a lot of spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks lmao
like. tony and drew? DEFINITIVELY heels. not gonna stop being heels anytime soon. but people like them anyway! people will cheer for drew’s powerpoints, or for tony’s dumb dumb stupid terrible 8 reasons monologue, because they’re endearing. and drew especially...even though he’s a DICK who fights people in the most dickish way possible, he does earnestly believe in a better 205, and he keeps trying no matter how hard he fails every single time, and people can relate to that, and appreciate that. there was a quote about, like, wile e. coyote that mentioned how that played into people finding antagonists sympathetic, and drew mentioned on twitter actually that wile e. coyote is his political inspiration, and i think that in this case it Works?
like. drew and tony are heels, and they might have cool goals but they go about it in a TERRIBLE rude way, but there’s still something to root for in them. and i think that pitting them against a heel like brian kendrick, or, god, like NEVILLE, that really brings out the things in them that are likeable. and i think that combining that, with ariya making the choice to defend them, even though historically ariya’s been more of a monster heel, i think that would lead to a pretty cool introduction of a face turn?
NONE of this is worded well holy shit im sorry. i just--i think about 205 a lot im sorry haha

A whiny ass lil’ bitch like you!” 43- Roman Reigns to John Cena: “On top of that he’s a part time fake ass bitch”. 44- “John: You come out here with your zipper open. Roman: I busted it actually, Big Dog. John: Oh sorry I was just looking for you balls but you don’t got none. Roman: You would be looking for those.” 45- Roman calling Cena “bitch” multiple times during his promos. 46- Kevin Owens beating a poor old man… aka Vince McMahon. 47- Roman Reigns: “Sometimes he says stupid shit”. 48- Kevin Owens saying to Shane McMahon that his family would have been better if he hadn’t survived the helicopter accident.
this post is disgusting when you read through it and realize just how the wwe sees the women of their company. and equally as disgusting when you realize how they put emphasis on the males for the wrong reasons. bolded for emphasis, by me.

Watch This Wrestling 46 (11/19–25)
Hello friends! If you look at the below, you’ll see a couple of changes. This upcoming week marks both me watching Impact again (yes, this is all Ethan Page’s responsibility) and my renewed interest in Chikara.
For Chikara, I plan to watch the VOD of the penultimate episode Kill the Moon and possibly attend its season finale Closing Time, a decision which will depend on whether or nor Mike Quackenbush vs David Starr is announced for that show in Philly.
And at some point, I’m going to begin the grand project of watching the show from its 4th season, a long-overdue project. The decision to start there was helped by the excellent Courtney Rose (@ChicagosCRose on twitter).
As always, if I’m missing anything that can be accessed without too much trouble, @ me on twitter: henrytcasey.
What I Watched
Survivor Series 2017, 11/19
Progress Chapter 57: Enter Smiling, 11/19
Monday Night Raw, 11/20
SmackDown LIVE, 11/21
205 Live, 11/21
NXT, 11/22
Powerbomb.tv: Wazzup, 11/25
Powerbomb.tv: This Very Second with Bryce Remsburg, 11/25
Upcoming Watch List
Beyond Wrestling/Women’s Wrestling Revolution, 11/27
Monday Night Raw, 11/27
SmackDown LIVE, 11/28
205 Live, 11/28
NXT, 11/29
Impact Wrestling, 11/30
Chikara: Kill the Moon, ?? VOD
Chikara: Closing Time, 12/2 — possibly attending live
Non-WWE Match of The Week:
Keith Lee vs. Flash Morgan Webster
Progress Chapter 57: Enter Smiling, 11/19
Nobody’s surprised to see me hand out a best to my two favorites from BOLA 2017, who wrestled a fantastic, epic match, that just happened to be booked the wrong way.
Anyone watching Progress during the last months has to be wondering what they’re doing with Flash. If all of these almost-wins will build to a major character point and a championship, then maybe they’ll be able to say it was worth it.
But Keith Lee loses nothing if Flash manages to eek a suprirse underdog victory out of the WWN Champion, not the least because the title wasn’t on the line. The crowd adored Keith Lee, though, to the point where nobody would even hazard the opinion that he needed to beat The King of the Mods.
Honorable Mentions:
Logan Easton LaRoux vs AJ Gray vs Anthony Greene vs Razerhawk, Powerbomb.tv: Wazzup, 11/25
Thick Boys (Jay Freddie & John Silver) vs Ugly Ducklings (Lance Lude & Rob Killjoy), Powerbomb.tv: Wazzup, 11/25
Ringkampf (Timothy Thatcher & WALTER) vs CCK (Chris Brookes & Kid Lykos) (c) vs for the PROGRESS Tag Team Championships, Progress Chapter 57: Enter Smiling, 11/19
Non-WWE Segment of The Week
“Revenge can only be found on the road to self-destruction”
Dahlia Black promo via YouTube
While I thought the four-way match that included Dahlia and Jinny was rushed and didn’t gel together as one whole match (instead reeking of two, smashed together), Ms. Black’s pre-match promo was excellent.
youtube
Until this moment, this feud existed in short moments where announcers rushed out words to one of the two, who typically had joined them on commentary. While it could have used one more story beat (at the start, showing their friendship pre-injury), it still was the most well-acted (bravo, Dahlia) and necessary story beat of the week.
Honorable Mentions:
The shit talking Trent Seven gave Zack Gibson, Progress Chapter 57: Enter Smiling, 11/19
All of the weirdness that was Powerbomb.tv: This Very Second with Bryce Remsburg, 11/25
WWE Match of The Week:
AJ Styles vs Brock Lesnar
Survivor Series 2017, 11/19
How could it be anything but this? AJ Styles elevated himself even higher in the lore of WWE by pulling an amazing 1 on 1 match out of the notoriously unreliable Brock Lesnar.
youtube
Honorable Mentions:
The New Day vs The Shield, Survivor Series 2017, 11/19
Charlotte Flair vs Alexa Bliss, Survivor Series 2017, 11/19
The Bar vs The Usos, Survivor Series 2017, 11/19
Roman Reigns vs The Miz (c) for the WWE Intercontental Championship, Monday Night Raw, 11/20
Akira Tozawa vs Drew Gulak in a Street Fight, 205 Live, 11/21
Johnny Gargano vs Pete Dunne (c) for the WWE UK Championship, NXT, 11/22
Ruby Riot vs Sonya Deville, NXT, 11/22
WWE Segment of the Week:
Paige Returns, With Friends
Monday Night Raw, 11/20
Obviously, this segment will age well or poorly based on how WWE books Paige and the friends she picked up on her way back to the main roster, but for now, it’s a win.
youtube
Not only was it fun and shocking for a return to turn into an invading faction, but it’s quite clever. Rose and Deville provide solid cover and distraction from the controversy that took place during the time where while Paige’s injury (among ohter thing) kept her off camera.
Honorable Mentions:
Braun Strowman’s post-show interview, Survivor Series 2017, 11/19
Enzo and The Zo Train give thanks, Monday Night Raw, 11/20
SmackDown Gets its own Women’s Trio from NXT, SmackDown LIVE, 11/21

West YEAR Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 2016
Thank 8 pound, 6 ounce newborn Baby Jesus that 2016 is over! I mean, I guess there was some good stuff peppered in there, but it was an overall rough year for a lot of people. I tried to keep my sanity here on the blog, but even I checked out for the month of November. Like Kenny Rogers told us, sometimes you’ve gotta know when to walk away. But I did make a return in December just to kick the year in the ass on its way out. So, besides celebrity deaths, what did 2016 bring us? Well, there was that week we were all mesmerized by Pokemon Go! Those were fun times. We got new X-Files episodes. Peyton Manning retired after winning the Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos. Atlanta and Luke Cage came along and entertained us on television. And things weren’t too shabby here on the blog either.
During Spring Break Week, I discussed several of the most underrated TV theme songs, including Webster, California Dreams, and Enterprise.
I also covered the worst Batman comic ever written, in the form of Just Imagine Stan Lee’s Batman
I did my annual Fall TV Upfronts post, where I discussed the upcoming fall lineups of the major broadcast networks.
A post that was several years in the making, I ranked the Hot Moms of Teen Shows over on The Robot’s Pajamas
I also did a guest post ranking the hottest Power Rangers Villains
It wasn’t all fun and games, though. The country was going through some dark stuff, and I’m particularly proud of this West Week Ever where I discussed the racial problems in the country.
I also experience my first live wrestling event as I attended a taping of WWE Monday Night Raw.
I brought back my graphic novel review column, Adventures West Coast, where I covered Wonder Woman: Earth One.
I also brushed off my Comical Thoughts column, where I discussed IDW’s disappointing Hasbro-centric Revolution event.
Finally, I closed out the year with a post that I’m particularly proud of, discussing the greatest problems facing comic retailers.
I saw about 13 fewer movies in 2016 than in 2015. It wasn’t for lack of trying, but there are only so many hours in the day. As you know, I’m not necessarily Mr. Movie, so I’m not even going to try to rank them. Here they are, simply in the order that I saw them. Wanna know my thoughts? Plug the title into the search box up on the top righthand corner!
Movies I Watched This Year

West Week Ever Recipients of 2016 (with commentary)
1/8/16 – Fall Out Boy’s “Irresistible” video
I’m a huge boyband fan, so the news that one of my favorite bands (Fall Out Boy) had reimagined the It’s Gonna Be Me video by one of my favorite boybands (*NSYNC) definitely made my week. The sheer fact that it didn’t really move the world of pop culture, however, shows you how slow of a news week it was. There would be many weeks like this in 2016.
1/15/16 – Power Rangers
This was quite the week for the Power Rangers franchise. First off, it was revealed that Saban would be skipping the train-centric sentai series Ressha Sentai ToQger, and instead adapt Shuriken Sentai Ninninger as Power Rangers Ninja Steel. This announcement was almost a year to the date of the premiere of the show (scheduled to debut next Saturday), and we spent the next few months getting casting and toy news about the show. Meanwhile, the #0 issue of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic was released by Boom! that week, setting up a series that is so much better than it has any right to be. I’ve written about it several times over the year, as I’m a big fan. And finally, former Wild Force Red Ranger actor Ricardo Medina was formally charged that week for killing his roommate with a sword. All in all, I think Power Rangers truly earned the West Week Ever that week.
1/22/16 – DC Entertainment
The Suicide Squad trailer was released this week, as well as the series premiere of Legends of Tomorrow. The Suicide Squad promotion machine would see its ups and downs over the year, the Legends premiere was fairly strong, even with a bunch of useless characters (I’m looking at you, Hawks). The show would get stronger in its second season, but this is where it all started. We also got a DC movie special hosted by Kevin Smith, giving us some Wonder Woman and Justice League footage. Marvel usually dominates the news cycle, but DC showed that they can also step up to the plate.
1/29/16 – The X-Files
When news of an X-Files revival hit, it was pretty big news. Then it launched, and it wasn’t exactly what folks were expecting. Clocking in at 6 episodes, only half of them focused on the conspiracy aspect of the show, plus they were aired out of order.  I went from really liking the premiere to completely forgetting it existed, in a very short amount of time. If it was going to get the WWE, it would had to have been this week of the premiere, as it ended with more of a whimper than a bang.
2/5/16 – UnderScoopFire Podcast
I appeared on the UnderScoopFire Podcast 8 times over the years, and had a great time on every one of them. Those guys are some of my good friends that I’ve met online, so of course I was sad to see it go. After 150 shows (give or take a few. Yeah, I’m not letting that go!), I think their swan song deserved the West Week Ever.
2/12/16 – Denver Broncos
I couldn’t give two shits about sports, but Lindsay’s from Denver, so we’re a Broncos household. So, everything was coming up Milhouse this week, as the Broncos won Super Bowl 50. Not only was it a nice, round, milestone number, but it also served as future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning’s final game. It was the perfect storybook ending that sports fans seem to love so much. So, yeah, they totally deserved the West Week Ever.
2/19/16 – Deadpool
Deadpool came out and blew away everyone’s expectations. I mean, this thing is getting nominated for awards. And not Razzies, too! Personally, I thought it was too gratuitous. I’ve gone over my reasoning before, so I won’t rehash that here. Still, it went on to become the second highest grossing superhero film of the year, just behind Captain America: Civil War. Totally deserved.
3/4/16 – Fuller House
After Girl Meets World came along, the runway was cleared for any and every nostalgic reboot to come along. And along came Fuller House. Every fan of TGIF awaited it with bated breath, hoping for the same mindless entertainment they got from the original show. And it did not disappoint! The second season just debuted a few weeks ago, and it’s already been picked up for a 3rd on Netflix. This show not only showed the power of Netflix as a home for original comedies, but also showed that old dogs still have some fight left in them. I think this was definitely the high point of that week.
3/11/16 – Jay Pharaoh
This was a slow week. Sure, Pharaoh did an amazing impersonation spree during that week’s Saturday Night Live Weekend Update. Like, it was AMAZING. And to pay him back, the show fired him at the end of the season. He’s OK, as he immediately booked a Showtime pilot, but the fact that this was the most noteworthy thing of the week shows how slow things were.
3/18/16 – Nothing
Some weeks you’ve just gotta call a spade a spade. Instead of insulting anyone’s intelligence, nothing had the West Week Ever.
3/25/16 – Wonder Woman
Like a lot of people, I did not like Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Like a lot of people, I also felt that Wonder Woman was the brightest spot in that dark film. Totally deserved
4/1/16 – Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
I may not have liked it. A lot of folks may not have liked it. But it made some money. A lot of money. And it was the true springboard to DC’s cinematic universe. So, for its money-making and its importance, I think it earned the West Week Ever. Just because I don’t like something doesn’t mean that it’s bad. It just wasn’t for me.
4/8/16 – American Idol
Idol‘s series finale aired that week, marking the end of a pop culture juggernaut. Unlike The Voice, Idol actually created household names. It gave us Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood, and Fantasia. On the flip side, it also gave us William Hung, Taylor Hicks, and Daughtry. It spawned so many copycats, but it was the original recipe. Its influence may have waned in later years, but no one can deny what it was in its heyday. I think it’ll eventually come back, but this was when we said “Ta ta, for now.”
4/15/16 – Marvel
That week, we found out Natalie Portman wasn’t coming back for Thor: Ragnarok, we got a teaser trailer for Doctor Strange, an we learned that the new Spider-Man movie would be called Spider-Man: Homecoming. Marvel definitely dominated the news cycle that week.
4/22/16 – Harriet Tubman
While it was pretty monumental that a woman (a Black woman, mind you) would be adorning American currency, it doesn’t really move the pop culture needle that much. So, I ended up giving the West Week Ever to a dead woman – in a column that has a pretty strict No Death policy. This was kind of a slow week…
4/29/16 – Beyoncé
The singer dropped the surprise album Lemonade following their airing of her HBO special. One of the songs alluded to the possibility that her husband, Jay-Z, might have cheated on her. For the next week, everyone was pondering the identity of “Becky, with the good hair”. This is the kind of thing the drives pop culture. Totally deserved.
5/6/16 – Captain America: Civil War
I had seen the movie, and thought it was excellent.
5/13/16 – Captain America: Civil War
Then the movie made a lot of money. I mean, a fuckton of money.
5/20/16 – Nothing
It was just one of those weeks
5/27/16 – DC Universe: Rebirth #1
DC Comics lost a lot of fans after the New 52 event, in which they rebooted their universe. So, the Rebirth event was something of a mea culpa to those fans. More like a “Please come back! We promise to make stuff you’ll like again!” And for the most part it has worked. This special not only brought fan favorite Wally West back into the fold, but it also sort of introduced the Watchmen comic into the mainstream DC universe. We don’t yet know how that’s all going to play out, but this move helped DC to dominate more market share than Marvel for most of the year.
6/3/16 – Ecto-Cooler
I never really liked Ecto-Cooler. I mean, it tasted kinda like tropical piss, but I loved the fact that Slimer was on the box. That’s about where my nostalgia ended. But a lot of y’all out there LOVED that shit! So, when it was announced that Coca Cola was bringing it back in conjunction with the Ghostbusters movie, y’all started assembling street teams to track it down. I swear, if the 2016 election had been run in a manner similar to the vim and vigor displayed trying to track down green sugar water, I might actually have some hope for tomorrow!
6/10/16 – Awesome Con 2016
Slow week. Cool show, great company, but slow week.
6/17/16 – Hamilton
I discovered the Hamilton soundtrack the same week that it won 11 of the 16 Tony Awards for which it was nominated. We’ll talk more about the show later, but the West Week Ever was deserved, even if the wins did fall short of the Tony Award record.
6/24/16 – Black actors in Hollywood
This was more of a joke, as every Black actor in Hollywood was being cast in the upcoming Black Panther film. That trend has continued since this post. Still, slow news week.
7/1/16 – The 683 New Members of the Oscar Academy
Another joke. Due to the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, signifying that the Academy was lacking in diversity, 683 people were invited to be members, bolstering the number of women and minorities. Still, slow news week.
7/8/16 – TNA’s The Final Deletion
Oh, man! This thing was incredible. They went on to milk it for the rest of the year, andI missed all subsequent installments. Still, this got me to pay attention to a wrestling promotion not owned by Vince McMahon, and for a brief moment, all wrestling eyes were on TNA to see what Matt Hardy would do next. Completely deserved.
7/15/16 – Pokemon GO!
This game came along and took the world by STORM. To say it was a success would be an understatement. It was envisioned to promote fitness, as kids would have to walk around to find perks and to get their eggs to hatch, but there were workarounds. Hell, I drove around looking for Pokestops. For about 4 weeks, this was all anyone could talk about. It was the Tamagotchi of a new generation, and I think, outside of all the political stuff, it’s one of the things we’ll remember most about 2016.
7/22/16 – Ghostbusters
It was a slow week, but Ghostbusters and the Republican National Convention were the only newsworthy events of the week. As much as we want to pile on that movie, it did take in a respectable $46 million, and it set a record for Paul Feig/Melissa McCarthy movies. I know a lot of folks don’t feel the movie’s deserving of any kind of accolades. As you saw above, I didn’t watch it, but I still think it’s not as bad as people would like me to believe. I swear, though, had they named it anything other than Ghostbusters, we’d still be talking about it.
7/29/16 – DC Entertainment
DC, back with their SECOND West Week Ever of the year? The word on the street was that they “won” San Diego Comic Con, with their new footage of Justice League, as well as the debut of the Wonder Woman trailer. Considering Marvel usually dominates SDCC, this was a feat worth acknowledging.
8/12/16 – Suicide Squad
The movie made $160 million in 5 days, which is nothing to sneeze at. Plus, I actually enjoyed it. I didn’t like it as a component of DC’s cinematic world building, but I liked it as a standalone thing on its own.
8/19/16 – Ryan Lochte
He was an Olympian at the center of a fake robbery attempt in a foreign country, who then fled to let his teammates take the fall. It’s the stuff of a great Aaron Spelling show. He had the West Week Ever simply because he got away with it.
8/26/16 – Guardians trailer
Slow news week, even if the trailer is pretty awesome. Billed as “Russia’s Avengers”, the English version of Guardians trailer started making the rounds because of its crazy action and gun-wielding bear man. Yeah, you’ve gotta see it to believe it. The movie might not even be released over here, and if it is, it’ll never get higher than cult status. Still, if you want to know what everyone was talking about that week, it was Guardians.
9/2/16 – Are You Being Served? one-off special
Some might say this was a slow news week, but I think this applied the West Week Ever to an international stage when I typically just focus on the US. After all, this special didn’t even air in America (nor has it since, nor do there seem to be plans to do so in the future), and I had to resort watching it on YouTube. Still, I grew up with Are You Being Served? and I was more than curious to see how an update of it might hold up. With a few small exceptions, it was pitch perfect, and definitely in the spirit of the original series. This one might’ve been a bit personal for me, but I think it was the best part of this particular week.
9/9/16 – Atlanta
The show just won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series. I think I called this one correctly.
9/16/16 – Better Late Than Never
Another personal one for me, but it’s my site, so whatever. I’m more than certain none of my friends were watching this show, but I watched it weekly with my mom and we enjoyed it. I wrote about it to get folks to seek it out, but I doubt that happened. Still, in a week when nothing happens, things like this are allowed to shine.
9/23/16 – Lindsay West
Mah wife. Running your first half marathon is pretty impressive. And nothing happened in the overall pop culture world. If you’ve followed West Week Ever since the beginning, you know that every so often some random person gets the honor. Hell, last year, my kid had the West Year Ever, so you never know where I might play that card.
10/7/16 – Luke Cage
It broke Netflix! So many people tuned in that Netflix couldn’t handle it. I still haven’t seen it, but I haven’t heard a bad thing about it other than the fact that it kinda drags in the middle – like most Marvel Netflix shows.
10/14/16 – Will & Grace
Considering I think I was the only one impressed by this Will & Grace special that was designed to get folks to get out and vote, I’m sure a lot of folks disagreed with this choice. Still, if you were a Will & Grace fan, then you can’t deny how great it was to see those characters in a way that felt like they’d never left us.
10/21/16 – Logan trailer
Can’t say much more because the movie’s not out yet, but we were ALL talking about this after it dropped, and it’s on most folks’ most anticipated movies of 2017 lists. I don’t think it’s going to disappoint.
10/28/16 – The Walking Dead
I don’t watch it, but I did tune into this episode just to watch a man die. Or two men. Whatever. All folks could talk about this week was whether or not the show had gone too far. The Walking Dead dominated the discussion, so this West Week Ever was well-deserved.
11/4/16 – The Chicago Cubs
Um, the “cursed” team won their first championship after 108 years. Yeah, this was deserved.
12/2/16 – Search Party
I don’t feel like a lot of my readers had seen the show when I wrote this, but I know a few who checked it out because I’d written about it. That’s why I do this, kids! It was one of my favorite shows of 2017, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, I’m not quite sure what you’re waiting for.
12/9/16 – Hamilton
Hamilton for the second time this year. The last time was for its Tony wins, but this one was two-fold: The Hamilton Mixtape was released and a beautifully pirated copy of the play was uploaded to YouTube. I watched it during the 5 days that it was allowed to stay on the site, and I can now die saying that I saw Hamilton. This was on the heels of a controversy where the cast members took a moment to address Vice President-Elect Mike Pence while he was taking in the show. For the next week, the conversation was whether or not they should’ve done that. So, it’s safe to say that Hamilton was on everyone’s lips around that time.
12/16/16 – WWE’s New Day
Yeah, then the lost two days after I posted this. I guess that’s how the cookie crumbles. Still, they deserved the West Week Ever for all they had put in leading up to this point.
12/23/16 – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
It was the last thing to make a dent in pop culture before the clock ran out on 2016. A lot of folks are saying it’s one of their favorite Star Wars movies. I don’t really get that, but I’m happy for them if that’s the case. I thought it was entertaining, but I didn’t really like it. It’s hard to explain, and I’ve tried. Still, there’s no way anything else is going to take center stage when there’s new Star Wars to be consumed.
So, who had the West Year Ever? In the past, I’ve added up who had the most West Week Ever wins and then it’s a runoff. If we’re being honest, Death had the West Year Ever. There were SO many celebrity deaths this year, that it would take another post just to do a proper In Memoriam for everyone we lost. And of course, you have those guys who wanna “Neil deGrasse Tyson” everything by pointing out that people die all the time, or that the year is an arbitrary number. Whatever, asshole. That doesn’t help anybody, and it’s why you don’t get invited to many parties. Anyway, I don’t like to focus on death in West Week Ever -not because it’s morbid, but more because I feel like I’d have to acknowledge every celebrity death, even when I didn’t personally give a shit about that person. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
Doing the math, it’s a three-way tie between DC Entertainment, Captain America: Civil War, and Hamilton. DC Entertainment really stepped up this year, taking a good chunk of the comics market share away from Marvel, as well as by launching their cinematic universe. After years of being the joke of the industry, DC finally started pushing back. And the Rebirth initiative didn’t hurt things, either. Meanwhile, not everyone loved Civil War. I did, but even I’ll admit that it’s basically “Dawn of Justice Done Right”. They’re both superhero slugfests that surround the concept of dead moms. Some called it “Civil Bore”, but I don’t agree with that. Still, I have to kind of acknowledge that there is a divide out there. Finally, there’s Hamilton. It had a big year, but I don’t know if we’ll look back and say “Hamilton really came into its own in 2016.” If anything, that’s more likely to happen at a time when the show can more easily be consumed by the masses. So, Hamilton’s year may actually be ahead of it, but it’s not 2016. So, I think it’s pretty clear. 2016 was the year where retailers stopped buying everything Marvel was selling, and so did the fans. The quality of Marvel’s output was in question more this year than it was in recent years, yet people still seemed to be able to find positive things about the DC Universe. Meanwhile, their movies might not be your cup of tea, but they made money, and the critics haven’t deterred them from forging ahead. So, with that, I believe I simply have to admit that DC Entertainment had the West Year Ever.

SmackDown on Fox Episode #5 SmackDown Episode # 1,054 Buffalo, NY – Keybank Arena 11/1/19 I have returned once again with another installment of the SmackDown Report after having to miss last week due to being in the hospital, thankfully I didn’t miss anything special during last week’s SmackDown that would’ve been worth writing about, unlike tonight. At least WWE (or more appropriately the plane that the guys over in Saudi Arabia were supposed to take) did throw me a bone and give me a really fun episode of SmackDown to review for my return to the SmackDown Report. The big non-kayfabe story hanging over this episode of SmackDown was that the majority of superstars and crew were still stuck in Saudi Arabia due to their plane having to undergo maintenance, so for this show they had to rely on the few that decided not to go over to Saudi Arabia to collect their share of the blood money (as well as the women and the NXT crew). The difference in this show would become apparent immediately as we hear the voice of Tom Phillips welcoming us to the show as he will be on commentary alongside Renee Young and for the time being Aiden English.  The show opens with Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman coming to the ring and despite Lesnar beating Cain Velasquez at Crown Jewel in quick fashion (we are shown the entire match from Crown Jewel) Lesnar is still pissed due to the fact that Rey Mysterio attacked him after the match with a steel chair. Heyman lets us know that he went to Vince McMahon to inform him that Lesnar wants to get his hands on Mysterio, however, McMahon told him there was nothing he could do since Lesnar was contracted to SmackDown and Mysterio was contracted to Raw and the wild card rule was no longer in effect. Heyman states that as of now Lesnar has quit SmackDown on Fox and that he will be on Raw this Monday and he will find Rey Mysterio. We then see Lesnar and Heyman leaving the arena and as the camera pans back it shows that Triple H and Shawn Michaels are in the building, which would be an omen of what was to come tonight. This was a good promo as usual and more importantly, it gave a sensible explanation of how it will be possible for the USA Network to pick up Lesnar to be apart of the Raw roster as their world champion. I personally would have rather had Lesnar stay on SmackDown and Bray Wyatt go over to Raw as I feel there is less chance for the Fiend character to fail (more than it already has) if there is more creative input from someone like Paul Heyman who has a lot of pull over on Raw rather than Bruce Prichard who is the main guy in charge over on SmackDown. I also have to question Fox’s decision to allow WWE to put Lesnar back on Raw as I feel like they would want the guy with a more legit sports background and who has more of a chance to get mainstream attention as he is a far bigger star than Bray Wyatt is. I am bummed that Wyatt isn’t going over to Raw as it ruins my fantasy booking idea of having Liv Morgan as The Fiend’s version of Harley Quinn.  Match #1: Bayley © w/ Sasha Banks vs Nikki Cross (SmackDown Women’s Championship) Bayley tries to take control early but Nikki rolls her up for a quick two count before Bayley slams her back down to the mat. Nikki hits a flying head scissors that takes Bayley out of the ring and then she follows up with a wrecking ball dropkick and a tornado DDT on the floor. Nikki rolls Bayley in the ring for a 2 count as we go to commercial. We come back to Nikki fighting her way out of a chin lock and getting a quick 2 count off a roll-up. Nikki hits a series of forearms that send Bayley out of the ring and then tries for another wrecking ball dropkick, but Bayley catches her and sends Nikki into the steps. Bayley rolls Nikki back in for a 2 count and then delivers a series of shoulder thrusts into the corner before Nikki is able to move sending Bayley crashing into the corner. Nikki blocks some forearms and delivers some of her own before taking Bayley down with a running crossbody. Nikki hits an avalanche in the corner followed by a bulldog, Nikki is fired up as she goes up top and delivers another crossbody that gets her a two count. Nikki tries to go for the twisting neckbreaker off the ropes, but Sasha gets on the apron to provide a distraction only to get knocked off by Nikki. Bayley knees Nikki in the head and then goes up top to hit the elbow which only gets a 2 count.
Bayley sets Nikki up in the corner looking for a superplex but Nikki fights her off and tries for a tornado DDT, but Bayley blocks it and sends Nikki down to the mat. Nikki rolls outside and Bayley tries for a baseball slide, but Nikki wraps her up in the ring apron and hits her with more forearms and even hits one on Sasha for good measure. Nikki goes back up top but this time Sasha pushes her off which allows Bayley to hit some kind of move that sends Nikki to the mat face-first to pick up the win.  Winner: Bayley    Match Rating: **¼ This match was fine but nothing to write home about as it was just an average TV match. I do like how Bayley is the main focus during this run while Sasha plays the role of the cheerleader as it has usually been the other way around. I didn’t care for whatever that move was that ended the match as it looked really weak and I hope it’s not Bayley’s new finisher. I wasn’t sure how well heel Bayley was going to play out as I always thought she would be someone who stays babyface her entire career like Ricky Steamboat, but so far I am enjoying it as it has really been refreshing and I thought last week she was really good on commentary in the heel role. I love how Sasha and Bayley are two heels that are teaming together, but yet they are completely different styles of heel as Bayley is the “woe is me” emo type of heel while Sasha is more flashy and all about money, fame, and luxuries, this is what it would’ve looked like if Raven and MVP had ever teamed together.  After the match as Bayley is celebrating her win, NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler comes out of nowhere and sends Sasha into the ring post and then delivers a step-up knee to the face on Bayley. Shayna sends Bayley shoulder first into the ring post and then delivers a gut-wrench slam on Bayley. Shayna goes to put her jacket back on but sees Bayley trying to get to her feet so Shayna hits her with another knee and then leaves through the crowd as the fans chant NXT. This was a great way to properly start off the NXT invasion that would happen throughout the show and Shayna looked like a million bucks as she carried herself like a star and even if some people in the crowd didn’t know who she was they had to know that she was not someone you would want to mess with.  As we come back from commercial we see that Aiden English has been replaced on commentary by “Mr. Casual Friday” Pat McAfee who is in all his casual wear glory with a cut off t-shirt and shorts. McAfee would call the rest of the show alongside Tom and Renee, he would serve as the head NXT cheerleader for the rest of the evening.  Cathy Kelley is in the back interviewing Sami Zayn about everything that has happened tonight and he says that there seems to be a pattern happening and it looks like NXT has taken over, he then warns NXT to be careful with who they mess with. Keith Lee and Matt Riddle show up and Sami tries to talk his way out of what he just said and tries to plead with them even reminding them that he used to be called the heart and soul of NXT. Zayn then goes to reveal he has an NXT shirt on but turns out it’s just a plain black shirt, he says he left his NXT shirt in his car and he was going to go get it so Riddle and Lee follow him despite Zayn pleading for them to stay and he will be right back, eventually Zayn takes off running which leads Riddle and Lee to chase him throughout the arena and into the ring. Riddle hits Zayn with the Final Flash knee strike followed by the Bro Derrick and then Lee delivers a moonsault off the middle rope before both men pose over the prone body of Zayn.
This was a fun segment to introduce Riddle and Lee to the mainstream crowd that most likely don’t watch NXT. The only issue I had with the entire segment was the black t-shirt part as that just didn’t sit right after all the controversy earlier in the week with Jordan Myles putting WWE on blast for the shirt they had made for him, to me, it just felt like an unnecessary jab at Myles. I could be wrong and it’s just a harmless segment where those in charge gave no second thoughts on using a black t-shirt in the segment, I mean, after all, they didn’t give it a second, third, or fourth thought when they made the Myles shirt in the first place.
There was a recap of the absolute shit match that was Braun Strowman vs Tyson Fury that made me hope that Fury doesn’t step into a wrestling ring ever again because everything he did in that match looked like shit and the fact that he popped right up after getting hit with Strowman’s Powerslam was the cherry on top of that shit sundae.  It’s time for Miz TV and The Miz plans on interviewing himself since his original guest Bray Wyatt was still stuck in Saudi Arabia. We get a recap of The Fiend vs Seth Rollins match at Crown Jewel that saw The Fiend walk out as new Universal Champion. The Miz then turns his focus on what has happened so far on SmackDown with the NXT invasion and this leads to him being interrupted by Tommaso Ciampa. Ciampa says that Miz is everything that is wrong with Raw and SmackDown and also says that while Miz plays the part he is the part. Miz talks about how good Ciampa is but says that if NXT wants to make a statement then they need to stop sitting back and make one, this leads to a match between Ciampa and The Miz. Match #2: The Miz vs Tommaso Ciampa They trade headlocks to start out with Miz getting the advantage briefly before Ciampa turns it around and throws Miz out onto the apron. Miz slides under the legs of Ciampa and then returns the favor by throwing him over the top to the floor. Ciampa moves out of the way of a wrecking ball dropkick and sends Miz into the barricade and the steps before giving himself a round of applause and a pat on the back. Ciampa rolls Miz back into the ring and locks in a chin lock that Miz tries to fight out of but Ciampa forces him back down to the mat. Miz finally makes a comeback and hits Ciampa with a kitchen sink, a knee lift, and then his backbreaker into a neckbreaker combo that gets a 2 count. Miz kicks Ciampa repeatedly in the corner and then hits him with a couple of flying knees in the corner,  just as Miz has all the momentum behind him he is taken down with a discus clothesline out of nowhere followed by a running knee strike that gets a 2 count.  Ciampa goes for the Fairy Tale Ending but Miz counters and tries for the Figure Four only to be kicked off, both men are countering each other until The Miz connects with a chop block on the knee that Ciampa has had trouble with in the past, Miz looks to go to work on the leg, but Ciampa kicks him off and tries for a powerbomb, but can’t lift Miz due to the bad knee and this allows Miz to kick the leg and hit his snap DDT for a 2 count. Miz finally locks in the Figure Four but after struggling for a while Ciampa reverses the pressure which allows him to finally get to the ropes. Miz goes for the Figure Four again but Ciampa rolls him up only for Miz to kick out and try for a PK but Ciampa ducks and goes for another rollup but Miz kicks out so Ciampa transitions into a half crab. Miz then rolls up Ciampa but Ciampa kicks out this time. Miz and Ciampa exchange chops until Miz hits his clothesline in the corner and then goes up top, Miz comes off with an axe handle but Ciampa catches him with a knee and then hits the Fairy Tale Ending to pick up the win. Winner: Tommaso Ciampa via Pinfall    Rating: **¾ Not too much to say about this match other than it was pretty good. I thought the Miz TV segment was also really good and showed that Ciampa can hang on the mic with one of the best talkers in WWE. We go to the back where Bryan walks up to confront Triple H and Shawn Michaels about what has happened tonight and then challenges Triple H which leads to a staredown, but Triple H isn’t prepared to compete but he does have someone else Bryan can face which leads to Michaels teasing that it’s going to be him by taking off his jacket but then puts it right back on, Triple H says that he is talking about Adam Cole (Bay! Bay!). Bryan is fine with facing Cole, but he wants the NXT Title on the line, Cole and Triple H agree and we have a dream match set for tonight’s main event.  Fire & Desire come to the ring for the next match but their opponents never come out, we cut to the back and see that Bianca Belair has single-handedly laid out both Carmella and Dana Brooke, she presses Carmella above her head and throws her over a stack of equipment cases which looked quite impressive.  Although I have been watching Bianca for over two years now it still surprises me at times just how strong she is. I love Carmella to death but the way she sold the initial beating that was unaired was terrible, the way she was sitting looked less like someone who had just gotten the crap beaten out of them and more like someone who was just stressed out after having a bad day and even after Bianca lifts her up she doesn’t sell it at all. Match #3: Fire & Desire vs Rhea Ripley & Tegan Nox Rhea and Tegan attack Fire & Desire right as the bell rings. Tegan and Sonya are fighting on the outside until Sonya sends Tegan into the barricade. Mandy tries to make a comeback on Rhea but is cut off with a dropkick, meanwhile back on the outside Tegan sends Sonya over the announce desk and in the process Sonya’s foot hit Renee Young square in the face and gave her a bloody nose. Tegan in the ring and hits Mandy with the Shiniest Wizard and then Rhea gets the win for her team by making Mandy tap out to the inverted Cloverleaf lock. Winners: Rhea Ripley & Tegan Nox via Submission   Rating: *¾
This was a great squash by the NXT women and just like earlier, it showed the mainstream audience that the women down in NXT can definitely hang with the women on Raw or SmackDown and they are not to be taken lightly in this “war” against Raw and SmackDown. It was nice to see a new heelish side of Tegan as up until now she had only been the cute white meat babyface. It’s interesting that both tonight and in the upcoming WarGames match she will be teaming with Rhea who just happens to be the woman she was facing when she suffered her most recent knee injury during the second annual Mae Young Classic, in that match Rhea showed her no pity after she got injured, so if we look at this from a kayfabe standpoint why would Tegan even want to team with Rhea?  Triple H and Shawn Michaels come out to ringside for our main event match which is coming up next, but first Stephanie McMahon comes out and talks about Natalya and Lacey Evans making history by having the first-ever women’s match in Saudi Arabia before cutting to a video package that showed highlights of the match as well as Twitter reactions to the match.  Match #4: Adam Cole © vs Daniel Bryan (NXT Championship) There is some nice chain wrestling early on neither man gaining an advantage. Bryan backs Cole into the corner and cleanly backs away from Cole before smacking him on the chest and then giving him an arrogant slap to the face, this fires Cole up as he comes out of the corner with some forearms only to be taken down again by Bryan. Bryan delivers a couple of chops in the corner before Cole makes a comeback and takes Bryan down with a headlock takeover. Bryan makes his way back to his feet and we get a drop-down and leapfrog spot that ends with Cole going down courtesy of a big kick to the chest by Bryan. Bryan yells to Triple H that Cole doesn’t belong in the ring with him. Bryan stomps on the back of Cole’s arm and then locks him in a Mexican Surfboard which he transitions into a Dragon Sleeper. Bryan is on a roll until Cole stops Bryan’s momentum with one big boot to the face that gets him a 2 count. Cole keeps trying for a suplex on Bryan but Bryan blocks it and then delivers one of his own which sends both men tumbling over the top rope and to the floor as we go to commercial.
As we come back from commercial both men are trying to get a backslide on the other until Cole hits a jumping neckbreaker on Bryan for 2. Cole hits some elbow and knee drops that get him a 2 count before locking in a head scissors on the mat which Bryan gets out of by easily rolling to the ropes. Cole and Bryan trade strikes which Bryan gets the best of and then Cole sends Bryan into the corner only for Bryan to backflip off the top and connect with a running clothesline. Bryan backdrops Cole to the floor and then dives off the apron with a flying knee. Bryan rolls Cole back in the ring and hits a missile dropkick off the top. Bryan hits a running dropkick in the corner and then looks to hit a top rope hurricanrana but Cole rolls through into a pin which gets a 2 count. Bryan delivers some uppercuts only to once again be taken down with a big boot. Both men are spent as the crowd is chanting for both men. Bryan and Cole trade waist locks before Bryan sends Cole out of the ring, Bryan hits Cole with a tope suicida and then tries for another one but this time he is caught with a kick to the head as both men are laid out at ringside as we go to commercial.  Back from commercial and Cole has Bryan up on the top looking for a superplex, but Bryan slips out the back and crotches Cole before delivering a spider suplex off the top. Triple H is looking on with a worried look on his face as Bryan goes for the diving headbutt, but Cole moves and Bryan hits nothing but canvas. Cole hits his signature brainbuster onto the knee which only gets him a 2 count. Cole pulls down the knee pad as he looks to hit the Last Shot but Bryan turns it into a half crab only to transition it into the heel hook before Cole is able to get to the ropes. Bryan delivers kicks to the back of Cole’s leg and then picks him up looking for some kind of slam but before he can pull it off Cole counters into a backstabber for 2. Bryan locks in the LeBelle lock, Cole looks like he is going to get out of the hold but when he does Bryan grabs Cole’s arms and repeatedly stomps and the head and face of Cole. Bryan locks in the LeBelle lock once again and this time when Cole tries to reach the ropes Bryan grabs his arm and bends it back but thankfully Cole is able to get his foot on the rope. Bryan hits the Yes Kicks but as he goes for the kick to the head Cole ducks and they then trade O’Connor Roll pinfall attempts until Bryan connects with the Buzzsaw Kick. Bryan goes for the flying knee, but gets caught with a superkick and Cole immediately follows that up with the Panama Sunrise and the Last Shot to pick up a clean win on Daniel Bryan. Winner: Adam Cole via Pinfall  Match Rating: ****  Adam Cole vs Daniel Bryan wasn’t a match that immediately came to mind when I think of dream matches that could be really great, but now that I have just watched this match I want to see more are these two put on a great match.  After the match members of the NXT roster came out and got in the ring along with Shawn Michaels and Triple H. Triple H stated that this was his army for Survivor Series and he considers them family, NXT has fired the first shot and look forward to what Raw and SmackDown have in store for them.  The addition of NXT to Survivor Series has definitely got me intrigued. According to Triple H at the end of the show he made it seem like it’s going to be Raw & SmackDown vs NXT instead of all three brands battling it out on their own and I think that would be the best way to go since it’s hard enough to make people care about the Raw vs SmackDown brand warfare, to begin with, so the fact that they have only been separate brands for only a month would make it near impossible to get the fans to care, having them team up to take on NXT would at least bring a different element into the show that we haven’t seen before.  It will be interesting to see how NXT balances the fact that they have NXT Takeover: WarGames the night before Survivor Series, how do they build the feuds between members of the NXT roster for Takeover, while at the same time building somewhat of a sense of unity for Survivor Series? I think the first thing they need to do is have Triple H come out and say that they better get all of their frustrations and anger with each other out on Saturday because if one of them turns on their fellow NXT brother or sister at Survivor Series they are looking at a suspension without pay and furthermore if NXT is successful at Survivor Series they can all expect a significant raise in pay. One last thing I want to mention about NXT at Survivor Series is the fact that it was announced that NXT UK talent will be featured on 205 Live next week which hopefully means that NXT UK roster members will also be involved on Team NXT, this would help even out the sides because NXT on their own would be severely outnumbered by Raw and SmackDown talent.  This episode of SmackDown was really good and a lot of fun and was a very quick two hours to watch. The show had two good matches and one great match and also did a good job of explaining how and why Brock Lesnar is jumping back over to Raw. I wish all weeks of SmackDown were as fun as this one was.
