27. what is your most and least favorite part of writing?

most favorite: coming up with the idea, doing the set-up, developing the backstory

least favorite: when i realize that doing the previous stuff has left me with 1k+ of fluff that doesn't serve the narrative, and i must cut it out.

52. Do you respond to comments? why or why not?

i do, but i get very in my head about how long it has been since the comment was left and also how long it has been since my last update-- i often prioritize working on a wip over answering a comment if the comment was left on something that hasn't gotten my attention in a while. know that if i havent responded to your comment, it is because i am a deeply anxious person who is experiencing anxiety about my update schedule (or lack thereof) and it is not because of you or your comment!

i was shocked that "tender" wasn't coming up as i searched other pieces, so i must go with this instance from a rook/emmrich piece im playing around with as i work through veilguard, titled obsequies.

His voice is so tender as he speaks that she opens her eyes again, Emmrich Volkarin’s own achingly warm and soft above her. “I refuse to lose you, darling. Even if your soul parts from your body, I will snatch it up. You will hover at my shoulder as I prepare your bones for the Necropolis, and once my work is done I will lay your wisp back inside, gentle as tucking you in bed.”

oh gosh!

that's the kind of love ive been dreaming of was so fun to write, and being in Astarion's head in this particular way--where he's not quite performing, but also trying not to think about what the "dream" is telling him about himself-- was very fun. and there will be a chapter 2. eventually.

baby's first bg3 au fic, eldath's mercy, is maybe my actual favorite because that thing is such a joy. every chapter i go hello beloved readers, i am going to inflict druid things on astarion. and then i inflict druid things on that man. and he hates it. (also something something i keep writing longfic about healing, shut up shut up shut up)

ease was, lmao, so easy to write. i think i literally wrote that in a day. it almost dropped into my lap fully-formed. writing it made me fall face-first into karlach/wyll/shadowheart--a happy accident. there's a series now so i intend to keep writing for those three but god the wips pile is never ending

innatism! I dont often write gore or psychological horror and ive never written second-person before, but i did really like how this turned out.

and of course, last but not least, true colors shine in darkness and in secrecy. my beautiful child who terrifies me. i love you and im still working on you. chapter 6 is coming. tears in my eyes. chapter 6 is coming. dont look at how long its been since the last update.

this one is original fiction! it'll be a short story if i get it done.

But: death in your sleep. Not a bad way to die, not for you. You don’t even notice when it happens. You don’t notice a lot of things. When you wake up, it takes an entire loop for you to realize it should have been Tuesday.  

I'm going to take a stab at a kind of time-loop story. sort of. maybe.

i just started playing with this today and im not sold on keeping second-person beyond the introductory 200 words but 2nd person is how the idea came to me, so i wanted to honor that at least in the beginning.

Astarion can tell that Kira started her period on the road to Baldur's Gate. He offers her some assistance.

Kira’s breath catches. “You don’t mean that.” “Oh, but I do.” He stares down at her, and she’s never—for all the times that he’s snarled at her, drunk from her, flashed his eyes or his teeth at her in the dark—she’s never felt as much like caught prey as she does in this moment. Her heart pounds in her chest with the feeling: she’s exactly where he wants her to be, and he’s so damn pleased with himself. Slowly, deliberately, Astarion says, “Let me between your thighs, darling. A feast for me, an orgasm or two for you—we both win.”

devotion as a bruise

I'm still not sure if this will be the title of the fic or if this will be the series, because id like to write more than one story, but: Ophelia, cleric of Ilmater, and how she fell in love with a cleric of Shar. (the same Ophelia as mentioned in homing instinct) the fic takes place entirely in act 1.

Mildly, Ophelia says, “That was more than a wince. And it’s happened several times now.” Once in the Grove. At least twice in camp, and once more leaving it. This is the second time today and Ophelia hasn’t been able to pick out a pattern. She isn’t sure there is one. She isn’t even sure what’s happening, because Shadowheart wont talk to her, all she ever says is— “My pain is none of your concern, Ilmatari.” Shadowheart rises to her full height, glaring, but she’s inches shorter than Ophelia. The defiant effect is undercut somewhat by the subtle motion of her hand edging out of sight. The tiefling allows this with a nod, her horn chains clinking softly together. “But it could be.”

So here on tumblr, my username is a reference to the hobbit and to being short-- apparently Tolkien dwarves could get up to my height! I think at the time 'hobbitsized' was taken or id have gone for that, though im not. that short. at this point i kind of wish it was something different but ive had this username a very long time! On ao3, leetleblue is a reference to Jester, the little blue tiefling herself!

okay ill do kira and ophelia. and i made moodboards.

so. Kira. Kira Tavena is the eldest of five siblings, a sorcerer by birth and a druid by choice, and she wants to help so bad. she'd burn to keep someone else warm. being needed is the next-best-thing to being wanted but she doesn't dare hope for that, so being needed will do. it will.

I have more to say about Ophelia in this moment because ive written Less Fic about her, but Ophelia Vemot was created for a dnd campaign and I originally played her as a druid! In her home campaign, she was a deeply religious cleric who refused to have a crisis of faith when the gods literally vanished but she had to learn how to do magic some other way to keep helping people because the cleric magic dried up, so she turned to earth magic. Thinking through how to translate her into BG3 was so fun. Her wife, Lily, died 20 years before the events of the game and Ophelia spent some of the following years being a nomadic cleric, trying to Do Good away from the structure of the Church of Ilmater.

My fun fact about my girls is that Kira briefly considered taking vows in the Church of Ilmater when things were Very Bad, but now that she's doing better she's real mad about the whole thing. She would hate Ophelia on sight. Ophelia has her own issues with the structure of the Church and would think that was totally fair.

If they talked for 5 minutes they'd like each other immensely. Also not obvious from the moodboards but they are both tieflings. I have a problem and that problem is i fucking love tieflings.

🍄 share a headcanon for one of you favorite ships or pairings:

shadowheart/wyll/karlach keeps taking up mental real estate even though I super did not mean to write that into ease-- I read it back for the edit and went. oh! do I ship this now?-- but I think Wyll would try to do his Act 2 dancing scene with both of them and Shadowheart would do pretty well! Karlach though. Not so good. She's got enthusiasm, she's eager to please, she loves to do a lil dancey dance. She doesn't fall over, but it's a near thing.

She can admire the artistry when Shadowheart and Wyll dance together, but she'd rather be touching more, personally.

I trust her more than I trust just about anyone. I edit everything so so so so much, but alex sees previews and hears ideas before I'm sure things are finished-- I'm not sure if non-writers understand how. like. significant that is. to me. to me that is a huge deal.

she's one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I've ever had the pleasure to call my friend. I'm really glad to have her in my corner. 💕

🌻 least favourite character / hardest to write

Lae'zel is scary to write. I worry always that I don't show her motivations enough, because she's so young! she's doing her best! everyone around her is fucking nuts--she has a solution to the tadpole problem, her people are less than a day's walk up the road, and no one is listening! she's abrasive, yes, but she's also sooooooooo nice and respectful and open to new ideas. she's curious! she wants to learn!

I hope its clear from the way i write that I love all of the companions, but I find Lae'zel to be a very tricky one-- especially since most of the POV characters I write from very flatly think she's in the wrong.

i just dont find writing modern stories with without magic, monsters, or science fiction elements very interesting for meeeee. i like to world-build too much.

🐠 author who inspires you

@aevallare is one of those authors who will turn a phrase and cut to the heart of a character, and it makes me sit up every time and go man! i want to do that! this is true in her fanfiction and in her original work-- getting to read The Comeback on her patreon is suuuuch a pleasure, and her poetry is fantastic. <3

i cant remember if ive said this publicly or only in discord calls or what, but this image of ophelia is really at the core of Kira's characterization--i went, what if that but her being in the water was good. what if it was helping her. and Kira and the Circle of Calm Waters sprung from that thought. :)

unrelated to the ask game but. what are house md-adjacent things kira did while in the circle

oh this is a great question!

As Second Druid, Kira basically had Nettie's job. When you see her healing the bird--Kira did that, too! Additionally, the Circle of Calm Waters is really close to Baldur's Gate for a druid's grove, so in spring and summer they had a lot of people essentially doing medical tourism--and while First Druid Amphesia was often in there helping out, Kira spent a lot of time tending to illnesses via non-magical methods so she didn't strain herself. Magic is taxing!

Kira also mixed potions, and in my mind the sort of magic you'd use to do diagnostics isn't as intense as magic that will fix things: taking a look at something is less strenuous than making changes. She can do most of that magic, she was a very accomplished druid, and her bedside manner was incredible--she knew what it was like to be so sick that you stopped being yourself. She could talk you through the pain, and assure you that treatment was worth it even if treatment was going to be ongoing. She was living proof of it.

And you'd see her in the healing pools sometimes, on her bad days, sunk to her neck in the water with Amphesia's hand on her forehead.

As for actual house-md style shenanigans, there was a time where someone came to the circle going "ouuugh i feel so terrible, the pain is never ending" and kira looked them over and went "you are HAUNTED" and they said "i know, the pain, it is so--" and she said "NO, YOU ARE LITERALLY HAUNTED? BY A GHOST?"
