the newest mellark's
This is for my friend @lemonluvgirl87 who has a Birthday today and for @shewakessupwiththesun and @notanislander. This is a story about Katniss and Peeta adopting kids. It came to be because of this conversation and other conversations I've had over the years with Notanislander. All three of you are too wonderful for words. So I hope you enjoy it. It's rated T for some language. But it's mainly fluff. PS it's not beta'd so all mistakes are sadly mine.
Tumblr media
The town hall was packed with the District residents. Everyone was called to make a choice about the alarming amount of orphans in Panem. They were being held in District 13 and no one wanted them to stay there. They would be made soldiers. All of the districts were being asked to take the orphans in, and the government of Panem would be responsible for providing housing and adequate food.
District 12 was still rebuilding as were many of the districts. After the war there were so many issues with infrastructure, basic things like transportation, roads, running water and electricity had to be established in the entire nation.
"Why did this happen?" Leevy asked.
Delly sighed and carefully said, "After the war, all of the districts were in a bad state. The only place to put the kids was District 13."
"But after, how did this happen?" Greasy asked.
"Unfortunately it was a loophole. Anytime a child was orphaned and had no kin who wanted them they were sent to District 13. It's been happening for years," Delly said truthfully.
"So all of these children have no one to care for them," Thom said from his seat at the table.
There was a murmur in the crowd.
Katniss walked into the room and nodded at Thom. Her youngest was wrapped around her chest. Her son, Milo, loved to be cradled against her chest. Peeta walked beside her grasping Melody's hand.
Everyone's eyes turned to them.
Even though Peeta ran the bakery in town, they kept to themselves and were rarely spotted together in town, not since they renovated the house in the woods. They sold both of their homes in the Victors Village, and combined with a portion of their winnings, they purchased acres of the woods directly from the government. They moved out of the Victors Village and were enjoying the serenity of living deep in the woods.
Haymich came in behind them.
Immediately three men jumped out of their seats and offered it to them. Katniss felt her cheeks heat up as she loathed the attention.
Thom cleared his throat. "Okay everyone, let's get back to the problem at hand. The kids are coming and we know that no matter what the government promises we'll have to take care of them."
"How many kids are coming?" Hazzelle Hawthorne asked. She'd come back to District Twelve after living in District Four for a few years.
"We're not sure, the government is going to divide them up equally, we can expect anywhere from 60 up to 250 children."
The number of children displaced was shocking. Everyone was talking all at once. Thom tried to take control of the meeting.
Katniss glanced at Peeta who had their little girl cradled in his arms.
Katniss raised her hand. She kept it up until everyone noticed and settled down. They were curious as to what she would say. "I can bring game meat to the orphanage and Peeta is willing to donate the bread that he doesn't sell to the kids."
"That's wonderful," Delly said, grinning at them.
"I've got extra clothes," another said.
"We can knit them blankets," a group of elderly women said.
"Why should we help?" One of the men asked. Katniss turned her head and looked directly at him, he sat down immediately.
Haymitch stood up. "These kids are going to be scared. From what Thom said, most of them have been uprooted from the only homes they've ever known and bussed like cattle to D13. Now everyone here recalls what it was like to live there, how strict they were. Who knows what they've faced? We pride ourselves on being a family, Let's be a family to these kids."
"We've got a few months to plan, but if we all put in our share these kids will be taken care of," Thom said. "Just like we did when we came back."
From there the meeting broke up.
Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch didn't stay too long. They had to put the kids to bed. Melody was fast asleep. After Peeta did his nightly roundup, he walked into the room and silently got undressed. Peeta turned to her while they were tucked in bed. "You did good tonight."
"I just kept on thinking about Cecilia and her children. What happened to them?"
Peeta gently placed a tender kiss on her forehead. "You're a nurturer, it's in you to take care of people."
Katniss sighed.
"It's true, even when you were sick with morning sickness with Milo you were worried about me having a small cold."
Katniss shrugged. Peeta was downplaying the situation. He had the flu and couldn't get out of bed. They had to be separated because she didn't have a spleen and she had to sleep in another room. Thankfully, Effie was here at the time, and she took control of the situation. "Good night," Katniss whispered to him, lifting her face to place a chase kiss on his lips, and she smiled when she tasted his favorite wintermint mouthwash.
In the next few months the building was erected. The government sent a hundred and twenty cots, chairs, tables, and crates of supplies. Each child was provided a kit, a mattress, a pillow, and an itchy blanket.
The rooms were painted in warm, welcoming, soothing colors, not the austere white the walls were left in by the Capitol builders. The Residents took it upon themselves and built them a playground and library so that they could have a place to study or read. Gale sent hundreds of books for the library.
The grannies were knitting soft blankets for the kids. Katniss often joined them, quietly knitting away, thankful she learned the skill from her mother. When the children arrived the entire district came out to meet them. Katniss had been with the group of people who helped cook them a hearty stew and fresh bread.
Delly proudly smiled as the kids shyly walked to their new homes. Peeta painted and drew many of them, placing their pictures over their beds. Milo sat by him clutching a crayon. His chubby little legs and arms were an explosion of color as Peeta had painted him. Katniss was glad Milo hadn't tried walking like Melody at nine months. Milo crawled fast when he was motivated.
There was a boy who called her attention. As she went around serving them stew from the pot on the trolly. He held the hand of a small little girl he wouldn't let go of as they sat at the table. He carried two trash bags with him. He was skinny and lanky and he had that hard look she'd seen on Gale's face growing up. The little girl was small with a riot of curly hair, and she was tiny and delicate. The little girl reminded Katniss of Rue and her sister when they stood on tiptoe.
Katniss weaved her way through the tables, serving bread or soup. Some of the older kids scowled. Katniss scowled right back, and their eyes opened up when they realized who was staring back at them.
Hazelle was handing out cookies. There was a line of kids surrounding her. Katniss chuckled because they wanted more than one.
His eyes opened wide when he saw her, "You're Katniss."
"Yup," she said.
"You can't be giving us food," he spat.
"Why not?" Katniss was curious.
"Because you're famous, and famous people don't do stuff like this…"
Katniss chuckled, at his response. He definitely sounded like Gale when he was fourteen. "Well, there's a lot of things I do that may amaze you. So what are your names and how old are you?"
"I'm Koa. I'm seven and this is my sister Koda and she's four."
"I have a little girl who's five, her name is Melody," Katniss said, as she filled up the bowls of the other kids at the table.
Koda pulled Koa's sleeve and he leaned over. She whispered something in his ear. Koa nodded then turned to Katniss who sat down by them. She poured a bow for herself.
"She wants to know where Peeta is?"
"Over there," Katniss pointed with her ladle, "Drawing pictures."
Koda's dark brown eyes became rounded when she spotted his ash blond hair, amongst the other kids. Katniss grinned at the little girl's natural exuberance at spotting Peeta.
"Yeah I felt the same way when I first met him," Katniss said.
"So it's true, all of it?" The boy asked.
"Most of it," Katniss winked.
"Mom!" Melody excitedly came running. "Aunt Effie is on her way, she said she's bringing glamor for the kids."
The little boy blinked when he saw Melody.
"Melody, I'd like you to meet two new friends," Katniss said, "Koa and his sister Koda."
Melody was like her father, she was a happy free spirit and friendly. "Hi, can I sit with you?"
"Ah," Koa said. "Sure."
"Thank you," Melody said. "So what district were you originally from?"
"District 7," Koda said.
"My Aunt Jojo used to live there. She lives in District 4 now with my Auntie Annie and her son Finn."
Katniss gave Melody her plate and stood knowing Koa and Koda were in good hands.
A few weeks later she walked to the Orphanage. For the first time, she heard laughter coming from the kids as they played outside. Katniss loved watching the kids open up. It was happening slowly. There wasn't one person in the nearly one thousand adults who lived in the district who hadn't taken to the kids.
However, there were kids who had been taken quickly to the district. There were others who were having a harder time. There was a small girl named Gadget from District 3. She was only six, but she was withdrawn. She never interacted with the other kids and always had her black trash bag with her. The bag contained all of her possessions.
Katniss spotted her sitting by herself on one of the seesaws. She wished there was something she could do to draw out the little girl. She was the toughest one, Koa and Koda however had opened up to her. Katniss learned both his parents were war veterans. Koa's father had a heart attack when his mom was pregnant with Koda. His mother died in childbirth. He was transported to District 13 but he made sure to keep an eye out for his baby sister.
Katniss couldn't even imagine a three-year-old having the wherewithal to protect his baby sister. She genuinely felt for the kid. A fall leaf fell to the earth, and Katniss was reminded why she was there. She doubled her pace to the orphanage.
Every Sunday while Peeta was with the kids, she went out and hunted for the orphanage.
The fall weather was beautiful and she had a good haul. She had fish, turkeys, ducks, squirrels, and other game meat. Today Delly was holding a reading program in the library, and many of the kids were woefully behind in their education. Many had never read a book or had a book read to them.
There were rumors there were a few couples who wanted to take a child or two home. Greasy got along with one of the older boys named helped her cook in the kitchen and often walked her home. Katniss had overheard him say Greasy reminded him of his grandmother. They got on well and she wanted to give him a home even though he was sixteen and going to be phasing out in two years.
Katniss watched Koa and Koda approach.
"You're a really good hunter," Koa said.
"Thanks," Katniss grinned.
"Do you think you could teach me how to hunt?"
"Well before you can hunt you have to know how to clean the catch," Katniss said.
"Like removing the feathers and stuff?"
"Yeah," Katniss said.
"Can I help you?" Koa asked, his eyes were bright and open. And Katniss couldn't help but like the kid even more.
"Sure," Katniss said. Before long even Koda was helping out. Katniss took a feather and tickled her and the peal of laughter caused her heart to clench. Her pureness once more caused her to think of Prim and Rue.
As she left she saw Gadget watching them from the door. Katniss kneeled in front of the little girl with the two long braids. "So I noticed you like green. That's my favorite color. Last week the sewing ladies were making hats for you guys, and I thought that I would make you a special cap just like the one I'm wearing. Katniss pulled out a green cap and held it out to Gadget.
Her light blue eyes lit up at the hat. Her hand quickly reached up and snatched the hat and ran away.
"She's super shy," Koda whispered. She'd snuck up on Katniss Koda, had a soft tread, and tended to sneak up on people.
"Would you and your brother keep an eye out for her?" Katniss asked.
Koda nodded. Then she leaned in and gave a kiss on the cheek and Katniss felt her heart squeeze once more. These kids were special.
"Thank you," Katniss whispered. She stood, needing to get home. "I'll see you in a few days."
A few weeks later Katniss was at home with the kids. It was one of those rare weekends where Peeta had Saturday and Sunday off.
"Mommy, tell daddy about how high Koa climbed," Melody said.
"Why don't you tell him, sweetie," Katniss said.
"Koa can climb a tree like mommy and he's super quick," Melody said.
Peeta raised an eyebrow.
"You guys have been spending a lot of time with Koy and Kheeva?"
"No daddy," Melody laughed. "It's Koa and Koda. They go to school with me and we eat lunch together. He's fun and last week he got my ball that fell in a tree."
"Oh really," Peeta said. "So does mommy like Koa?"
"Mommy," Melody turned to Katniss, her trademark Mellark blue eyes filled with childlike curiosity. "Do you like Koa and Koda?"
"Yes I do," Katniss answered easily, it dawned on Katniss just how much she cared for the siblings.
Katniss watched Peeta. He looked like he wanted to say something more but he refrained. Peeta just listened to Melody talk about Koa and Koda. Katniss didn't say anything to her husband.
That night as she sat in their bed she waited for him to come back into their room. Every night he walked around the cabin making sure the house sure doors were locked, unplugging things, turning off lights, and checking that the stoves and the oven were off. Peeta said it was something his dad did with them when they were old enough. The number one threat to a bakery was fire, and with the amount of equipment, they used Peeta's father always stressed safety first.
Peeta became more vigilant after they had Melody. He also checked on the kids making sure they were in their beds. Peeta sometimes found Melody in Milo's room. Melody often read books to Milo, and Peeta caught her doing a puppet show for Milo in the middle of the night.
Before the kids were born, Katniss found his making the rounds sweet but she found it unnecessary. When they decided to remodel her father's cabin in the woods, they decided to use all of the technology available to make their home safe. When they drew up the plans for the renovation, they decided to purchase reinforced doors and windows. The materials were fireproof, and the windows could withstand getting hit with debris from gale-force winds. The cabin was nearly impenetrable like the NUT in District Two.
Katniss never contradicted Peeta when he made his rounds. Peeta needed to make sure they were safe. Peeta was a family man. He cherished all of their time together before having kids. He never put the bakery before her needs. And when they decided to have a baby Peeta became such a dad. Showing pictures of images of his little girl from the time she was in the womb. He was such a good father. Snow failed spectacularly in highjacking Peeta.
Snow wanted to not only destroy Katniss but, in the process, destroy the kind-hearted boy, who was smart enough to outfox the careers. Yes, Peeta tried to strangle her, but that wasn't Peeta. His reaction was due to the chemicals, fear conditioning, and torture they put Peeta through in the highjacking.
Through therapy and careful medication, Peeta was able to find himself. Naturally, he was different from the sixteen-year-old boy who was reaped in the 74th Hunger Games. She too was different from the hardheaded scared sixteen-year-old girl who volunteered for the games. That girl was naive and thought that the world she knew would never change.
Little did she understand how love could inspire such profound change.
Katniss turned the page of her book, then rolled her eyes and put the book down. Tonight, she was in a reflective mood. Katniss recalled all of the moments she Peeta had as they grew back together. The small little gifts that Peeta left on her doorstep before they moved in together. The primroses he planted in honor of her sister. The moonlit dancing, they did when they couldn't sleep.
The way he loved to watch her sleep. The cup of hot cocoa Peeta had ready when she came in from the woods on a cold or rainy day. All of the things that caused her to love him just a little more every day. Katniss heard the creak in the hall floor. Peeta was nearly done with his round.
She chuckled when she heard the uneven gate of his walk as he opened one of the kid's doors. Katniss yawned as she waited for Peeta. The door to their room opened, and the joy of seeing Peeta caused Katniss to smile.
"I just don't get how Milo can get naked in his sleep," Peeta said, scratching his head as he sat on the bed. "I check on him before making my rounds and he's half out of his onesie. I dress him up when I get back he's out of it.
"He's like his father," Katniss said, giving Peeta a sly smile. "He doesn't mind being naked."
"Hardy, har, har," Peeta said, catching her joke when they were in the arena. "One-time Everdeen. I say it one time, while delirious and I'm the automatic nudist."
Katniss grinned but she could see her flushed cheeks in the vanity mirror as she prepared to speak, "Well I for one do not mind."
Peeta grabbed the throw blanket and covered himself, looking outraged but his blue eyes were filled with mischief. "I married a sex maniac. What would Effie say?"
"She'd say," Katniss changed her tone to sound like Effie's Capitol accent, "May the odds be ever in your favor." She then leaned over and placed a suggestive kiss on his lips. She leaned back and watched his eyes darken with lust.
"I think my odds are very high tonight," Peeta leaned in to kiss her but Katniss withdrew and bit her lips.
"Katniss?"
"Earlier when Melody was talking about the kids in the orphanage, you looked like you wanted to say something?"
Peeta raised an eyebrow, "Darn that huntress eye of yours."
"It's actually my mommy's eye," Katniss said. "Before I became a mom, I never noticed things like that."
Peeta chuckled. "True."
"So, what was it?"
"Well you've been spending a lot of time at the orphanage, and the kids as well. I know they're in the same school."
Katniss waited as she watched Peeta remove his slippers and removed his shirt. She sighed at the sight of his broad chest.
"But do you think it's okay that the kids so get close?"
Katniss blinked; she hadn't been listening to Peeta. She'd been busily watching him. "I'm sorry what?"
"Is it wise to get attached?"
Katniss sat up straight. "Peeta these kids are so lost they feel as if they're not wanted. It's up to us to show them that they're wanted for the sake of being wanted. Can you imagine being shipped off from their homes to District Thirteen and then stripped of everything familiar? Cause that's what they do in that horrid district. Imprinting a schedule on your skin with everything assigned…"
"Katniss, I remember," Peeta said with laughter in his voice.
"Well then why are you questioning this," Katniss said, narrowing her eyes.
"Because for the past few weeks, you've been talking about the things Koda, Koa, and Gadget…you know I worry about Mel and Milo."
"They're great kids Peeta. Koda and Koa get along with Melody and Milo. Koa watches out for Melody in school during play time." Katniss watched Peeta slip out of his shorts and she nearly lost her train of thought. "And Gadget is smart, she's a bit shy. But she's coming along. Just yesterday I saw her playing with Koda. She's wearing the green cap I made for her." Katniss watched him slip underneath the covers. "I was hoping you'd spend time with them. Get to know them a little, if you're worried about them."
"Okay fine, I'll see what I can do," Peeta said.
Katniss got closer to him, a small smile playing on her lips. "So you're really not naked Mellark."
Peeta started laughing, ending all communication except for one.
Weeks later it was snowing and Katniss was handing the mitten, gloves, and scarves she and the ladies had knitted for the children. She had knit an orange and green set for her three favorite kids. Peeta had come with her.
Peeta had begun to come on his own and often had the kids in the bakery with him.
She watched him interact with Koda and Gadget. They were quietly painting along with Melody. Katniss had Milo strapped to her chest. Currently, her little guy was sleepy and was drooling on her shoulder.
She found Koa on his bed, "Hey."
"Oh hi Katniss," Koa said.
"You don't want to paint with Peeta?"
"Nah, I want to finish this book, can you imagine flying in the sky without the need for a hovercraft?"
Koa told her that his mom used to read a book about a boy who flew. Katniss called Johanna and she confirmed that they used to read the adventures of Paul Bunyan. It took speaking to Effie that she was able to track down the book. Koa's eyes watered at the sight of the book. She often found him reading it, over and over.
"I don't know but I can tell you flying in a hovercraft doesn't feel like flying at all. There aren't any windows."
"Woah," Koa said.
"Can you read me the story?" Katniss said, sitting in the chair.
Koa nodded and began reading it from the beginning. By the time he was done Peeta and the girls had joined him. Peeta's face had a soft smile as he held all three girls on his lap. Gadget was fast asleep.
Katniss smiled but said nothing. It was nearly Christmas time and Katniss noticed Peeta began coming to the orphanage. One day they were putting the kids to bed when he said. "Did you know Gadget stared down a boy twice her age yesterday when he tried to take Koda's toy?"
"No," Katniss said. She was thinking about what Melody asked her. Melody wanted to know if they could bring Koa, Koda, and Gadget home to be her brother and sister. She made a very good argument that they could all fit. Katniss had no idea Melody felt like this.
"Yeah, she's tough with a heart of gold," Peeta said as they walked downstairs to clean up.
Katniss smiled.
"Do you know Melody asked me if we could bring the kids home," Peeta said interrupting her thoughts.
"She did?"
"Yeah, and it started me thinking," Peeta said.
"Thinking…thinking about what?" Katniss asked. The hair on her arms was prickly. Peeta was building up for some news.
"I wanted to know if it was alright if the kids could come here on Christmas. Spend the holiday with us."
Katniss stopped picking up Koda's doll and stood up. Peeta stood just a few feet from her, his eyes were wide.
"Okay, you were right. Koda is sweet, she reminds me of Prim and Rue. Gadget is well, I've already told you and Koa is a great kid. He looks up to you and he's kind of like Gale."
"Yeah," Katniss said. "So you want them to…"
"Katniss, I think we should talk about more…"
"More?"
"Yeah, I've already brought them to the bakery. Koda and Gadget's eyes were bigger than the moon when they saw the equipment. Mel and the girls started a food fight and for the life of me, I couldn't get angry. It reminded me of when my brother's and I started a fight in the bakery. I could see them there. All of them coming home from school studying, and gossiping. And it's just not with the girls. The other day while speaking with Koa about hunting, he said he'd like to go into the woods with you. And I could see myself shouting at you both about trekking mud in the mudroom."
Katniss laughed and it sounded weird to her. Her vision blurred and she touched her cheeks and they were wet. "Oh, Peeta."
"I can see them as part of us, you know. Part of our family…" Peeta said and pointed around. "We've got room Katniss. I mean the cabin is huge. Haymitch has his room that he shares with Effie when they visit. But we can make that den into a room for Koa and Koda. That spare room can be for Gadget…"
Katniss ran and leaped into Peeta's arms. "Peeta, I've been in love with those kids since they said hello. But I think you're right…"
"We need to see if they would like to be with us, to see if we can do this…can we do this?"
"I don't know but it feels right," Katniss said.
"Okay so let's broach the subject with Delly," Peeta said. "She's the one in charge and she'd know what to do…"
The next day Katniss and Peeta left Melody and Milo with Haymitch. He didn't seem surprised that they would feel that way. Many people in the district had made connections with the kids and a lot were like Katniss and Peeta wanting to possibly adopt. They hadn't made the jump.
"So how can I help you?" Delly said.
"Dell's," Peeta started but looked at Katniss. Katniss gently nodded. "We'd like to know how to adopt."
"Oh," Delly said. "OH! Who?"
"Not who but which ones-" Katniss said.
"Wait, you want to adopt more than one?" Delly sounded flabbergasted.
"Is that alright?" Peeta asked.
"Ah," Delly stuttered then said. "Yes of course. Who are you thinking of?"
"Koa, Koda, and Gadget," Peeta said.
"Well," Delly said, sitting up straight. "There are some documents to fill out, a visit to your home to make sure you have adequate space, but I don't see a problem, as long as the kids want to…"
"We're thinking of turning the den into a room for Koa and Koda until they get bigger. And the extra bedroom can be for Gadget. We can turn the loft space into a bedroom for Koa when he gets bigger."
"Have you spoken to Melody?" Delly asked.
"Who do you think gave us the idea," Peeta said.
"She would like you Peeta," Delly said.
"Though we didn't want to say anything to her until we talked to you."
"Good okay then let's talk to the kids," Delly smiled. Delly stood and left the room and shortly after all three kids walked in. Their eyes filled with trepidation.
"Koa, Koda, Gadget Katniss, and Peeta asked me to talk to you," Delly said.
"Please don't make us leave," Gadget said.
Peeta got up from his chair and hunched down to her. "No, we're not asking you to leave. We want to know if you want to come home with us."
"With you?" Koa asked.
"Yeah," Katniss nodded, getting choked up. "To live with us."
"You want us?" Koa asked. "But we're nothing."
"No, you're not. Neither is your sister or you Gadget," Peeta said passionately. "We wanted to ask you, before starting the paperwork. If you don't want to, we will understand."
Koa nodded then he said. "We're like the lost boys and you're like Wendy and you're like Peter Pan. You'd be willing to take us lost boys in."
"Yeah," Katniss said, nodding.
"Can we talk about this by ourselves," Koa said.
"I think that's wise," Delly said.
Katniss watched them huddled together. They whispered. Peeta grasped her hand and squeezed reassuringly. They turned around and the smiles on their faces caused her trepidation to settle.
"We would love to…"
ONE YEAR LATER
Katniss waited for Peeta to finish making the rounds.
This past year was filled with growing pains and yet they were blessed. They'd included the children in their therapy sessions. Having that extra help caused them to blend further as a family. It wasn't perfect but it felt right.
Koa took to the woods like a fish to water. He loved going hunting with her. They were making a bow for him, just like her paw had done. Peeta had little aprons made for the girls. They hung in the bakery and were often used. Melody and Koa loved helping out the customers. Gadget preferred standing by Peeta, her hands deep inside the dough.
Peeta was right Gadget was a natural in the bakery.
Milo loved his brothers and sisters. Christmas was tomorrow and Katniss was wrapping up presents to put under the tree. Effie was in town and she and Haymitch were in their room.
Their lives were busier but fuller and it was chaos but Katniss wouldn't change a day out of it. Half of the kids that were brought to the district were adopted. Another group was in the process. A few had grown out of the system. But they were welcomed into the community. Other districts seeing the example also began adopting kids.
Peeta came into the room. "They're all piled up inside of the fort you made them. Koa hadn't fallen asleep yet, he was waiting for me. He had a dozen questions about Christmas."
When this began they couldn't bring them home for Christmas, though they did come home after the new year. All of the children were hyper and aware that tomorrow was Christmas. Katniss was hyper-aware of what tomorrow brought.
"He's going to love his new boots," Katniss said, putting the last of the two presents aside. "Do you know how hard it is to hide presents amongst five children?"
Peeta laughed. "I know, you don't have to tell me." Katniss watched him go to their bathroom.
"The question I have though is how are we going to tell them that they are going to add to this bunch," Katniss said quietly.
"Pardon me?" Peeta said.
Katniss had a picture in her hand. A grainy picture with two blobs. With the word TWIN underneath.
"Twins," Peeta whispered. "We're having twins…"
Katniss grinned. "Well, you're the nudist."
"One time Everdeen. It was one time…."
"It's more like a few times Mellark," Katniss laughed as he picked her up. "We're outnumbered, you know."
"I know."
"Jo is never going to let us live this down."
"I know."
"Is that all you got to say?"
"Merry Christmas Mr. Mellark."
"Merry Christmas Everdeen."
The next morning chaos reigned as the children learned of the newest Mellarks.

Howdy! I would love to hear more about the music you listen to if you’re down! It seems like we have really similar taste and I’m always looking for new tunes. What are your fav bands and songs that you think not enough people know about? Do you have any recs? Hope you’re having a good day!
omg thank you!! i love to talk about my music taste teehee
ok so as i said, lately i've been enjoying a lot of car seat headrest, but probably my best find recently has been the taxpayers. i am practically addicted to their stuff. my favourite songs from them are a documetation of most recent events, no lodging for the mad, weapon of god, and invader. seriously more people need to listen to the taxpayers!!!
the mountain goats is pretty stereotypical tumblr music, but specifically their newest album, jenny from thebes, is something i really enjoy. idk if that's an unpopular opinion, i've seen a few people call it too showtune-y, but it really calms me down for some reason.
will wood,, has probably been the most important artist in my life in recent years lmao. he's the only artist that survived my sudden change in music taste back in 2021. i can't even name a specific album as my favourite (though icimi is the one i listen to the most consistantly), all of them are so good. especially the lyrics are probably what got me so invested in his music in the first place.
bit of a wildcard, but leevi and the leavings! very famous old finnish band, though i only recently started listening to them lol. their sound basically defined finnish music back in the day, and listening to music in my own language has a unique feeling to it.

No.1 Everlark Shipper
for @jhsgf82, based off this post by @goldrushenthusiast and some of the tags/replies I left on there. crossposted to my ao3!!
We’re standing in the disgustingly hot July heat, the sun beating down on us, already burning the tops of our noses. Really, for the sake of all us Townies, the town square should be covered. I’m pale enough, but some of these kids, like little Lottie Sayers over there, are too white to be outside now. She looks like she’s going to burst into flames at any second. I look around at the sea of sweaty necks and brows, looking for a dark braid instead a blonde one. Not for me. For my idiot brother. Everdeen has her hair up in a crown of braids today, and she’s in a pretty little dress, shows off her little waist. The hair and dress make her look sweet, maybe flirty, but she’s (as always) scowling. Can’t imagine why Peeta likes her. She looks fuckin’ mean. Stuck up. Also, the fact she can kill things and drag ‘em through town? Something tells me you’d have to make sure you toed the line with her, or else. Kinda like how Mama is to him. Well maybe that’s it then.
I have heard about Everdeen for comin’ on Eleven Goddamn Years now. I know everything there is to know about this chick that can be known without actually saying a word to her, because he’s never said a word to her. I’ve seen the sketches, the letters, the truly awful attempts at poetry, the (admittedly, pretty good) pencil drawings that took weeks for him to finish scattered across our room for Eleven Years. I’ve heard the soliloquies(see, Mrs. Marks? I’m payin’ attention) practiced in the mirror, the grand planned gestures, the paper flowers and ribbons gathered and then abandoned after Sweetheart’s Day, every instance of young tender love and I could not be more sick of it. It ain’t-isn’t. Isn’t real. Not a lick of it. If it was, he’d talk to her. If she’s too scary, which again, she sure as shit looks that scary, maybe move on? Maybe pick someone different? Hell, it can even be another Seam girl, if that’s what he’s into. Leevy’s got that same little tits and long legs thing. And she actually smiles. But whatever. One day something will break it, and then I won’t have to fuckin’ hear it ever again.
That weird Trinket woman is just about to pick the girl’s name, and I’m still wondering what it takes to get someone’s hair that big, that pink, that shiny when she reads out the slip. Primrose Everdeen. Well. Shit. I don’t know what this is gonna mean, when her little sister dies. When her dad died, Peeta talked for months about how we needed to help her. I kept telling him it wasn’t the time or place, that the last thing she needed was some over-enthusiastic Townie meddling in her shit. She already had it rough enough. We could tell she was taking care of everyone now. That her mama wasn’t doin shit, and she was the breadwinner now. I remember thinking it was weird, and how I couldn’t imagine it, then I thought about how that’s just what older siblings do. That that’s what Rye does for Peeta and me. A buffer for when Mama’s on the war path. Even when she ain’t-isn’t. Isn’t coming after me, he protects me all the same. She usually doesn’t come after me, and that somehow feels worse. I owe ‘em both a lot of beatings. Rye used to take the blame sometimes, but we all kinda quickly realized I could get away with significantly more than he could, and especially more than Peeta could, poor fucking kid. Never understood why she hates him so much.
There’s some screaming and shuffling, and I look over and there she is, her face showing real emotion for once, screaming that she’s volunteering. I can’t imagine that. How would you ever do that? And then it sinks in. Shit. Everdeen is gonna die. I look over at Peeta, who looks like he’s gonna spew. Shit. What am I even gonna say to him, when this is over? While we walk home?  Happy fucking birthday! That girl you’ve been obsessed with your whole life is gonna get gutted by some teen-freak Career. It’s too awful. I just sigh and brace for the boy’s name. Almost over. One more year of it for me, two for him.
And then that pink and green bitch calls his name. I’m shocked. I can’t move, or see, or hear anything, and then it’s too late. He’s up on the stage and it’s too late. I can’t volunteer, can’t save him, can’t fix it. Once again he’s getting more punishment than his fair share. This kid that cries when he sees a hurt wild dog. That cried when he learned we ate our baby pigs. That’s been in love with the same girl for eleven years. The girl that’s going in with him. Shit!!! She’s going in with him!! They’re gonna die in there together. Well, I think darkly, they’re gonna have to talk now.
I go and look for Rye, and we both just stare at each other. He’s not saying it, but he’s thinking it. “Yeah, I know. I should’ve. I… I couldn’t make the words come.” I hate myself.
I’m expecting him to scold me, to yell. Being the parent’s favorite makes me the least favorite brother. They neither one like me much. Well, that ain’t-isn’t true. They like me just fine. They’re just very jealous. I would be too, if I was-were gettin’ beat for minor shit that don’t even matter, and someone else wasn’t. I don’t expect him to hug me. He does, pulling me in close, even kissing my forehead like he did when I was little. I don’t even wipe it off this time.
“Hush. It isn’t your fault. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t do anything right neither.”
He smiles a little. “Either, you mean. But it doesn’t matter. It’s going to be okay. Besides, I think she’d kill him, if you went in instead. It wouldn’t be a good sacrifice. She’d hate him even more, especially if you didn’t come back.” He shook his head. “God help me for what I’m gonna say, but it’s better this way. If he comes back, JoAnn won’t think he’s worthless anymore. If he doesn’t”, his breath shudders, “if he doesn’t, well. Then she never touches him again.”
I swallow around the lump in my throat. The one thing she only did to him. Rye got beat, sure. But he didn’t get touched like she touches Peeta. It… it’s not that she straight up sleeps with him. But it’s…uncomfortable, to even watch. Humiliating. Can’t imagine what it feels like. “Right. Well, ready to say” Oh I can’t say goodbye. I blink some rogue tears. “To send him off?”
“Yeah.” He says gruffly. “Yeah.” I can tell he’s thinking what I am. This is gonna be a shitshow.
It’s worse than I thought it’d be. We’re all standing there and not saying anything. Rye at least held him while he cried. JoAnn is world class, says something truly evil. Says she’s rooting for Everdeen, and if there was any fondness I ever had for that woman, it’s done. She runs out, even though all the rest of us are begging her to not. I scoff, but Peeta is laughing, no, cackling. Like nothing has ever been so goddamn funny.
“Love you too, Mama! Hope I get to see you again!” He yells out, voice hard and bitter. “God. What the fuck?” He scrubs at his face, leans back, screaming and laughing and sobbing into his hands.
Rye runs after our useless fucking parents, trying to talk sense into them. It’s pointless. Anyway, we’re almost out of time. Almost out of time. I can’t fuck it up again.
“I know it ain’t great timing to be asking you a favor, but do one for me anyway?”
“God, Soren. What?” He sighs, clearly not in the mood for whatever he thinks I might say. I sit down on the saggy sofa, clapping his shoulder.
“I need you to tell her. Please. She deserves to know.”
He huffs, rolls his eyes. “It’s all a bit pointless, ain’t it? Nothing either one of us could ever do now.”
“Yeah, but I know you. You’d never be able to live with yourself if you never told her. So you’ve gotta. Find some way. Do one of those grand gestures you’re always planning. Or, fuck, I dunno, do it private. Over coffee or whatever. But tell her, little bun.” I’ve never called him that. Not sincerely, anyway. That’s what Dad and Rye(mostly Rye these days) call him. But, it felt right. “I’m really sorry I didn’t”
“Don’t be.” He cuts me off. “I get it. Don’t be sorry. In fact, promise me. You don’t get to feel guilty about it.”
I swallow hard again. The Peacekeepers are coming to take me away. I clap him on the shoulder one more time. “Alright. I love you. Uh, good luck and all that. And happy birthday”
It gets him to laugh, even if it’s just a dark laugh. “Thanks. Uh…see…mm. See you later.”
“Yeah. See you later.” I don’t know if I believe he will, but I know he can win this. I hope he does.
I try to keep my promise, of not feeling guilty, for not stepping up and going in for him. It’s not easy. Suddenly our room feels too big, too empty.  Rye and I haven’t moved a damn thing. There’s still a half finished drawing on the desk, a pair of silver eyes. I wanna puke everytime I see them. I do my homework downstairs in the bakery now.
We’re closed on the day of the interviews. We close a little more now, though not as much as I thought we would. Dad hides, crying in long showers or disappearing on errands, and JoAnn, Rye and I are stuck in the bakery together, avoiding curses and rolling pins being hurled at us. Now that Peeta isn’t here, I’m getting on her nerves more. I’m sporting black eyes now too, though I don’t let them show. I can’t cover them like Peeta does, and I’m a little paler than him anyway, but the little tube of concealer he left behind does fine enough.
We all sit on the couch, pretend to be a family over some tea and cookies. We’re eating more fresh, a result of the sympathy money. People have been spending a lot on baked goods here lately. The mayer orders a cake a week. Madge must know we’re feeding Prim and Mrs. Everdeen(Mama does too, and she hates it. Dad catches an ashtray to the nose for it). She likes Katniss too.
Anyway, my baby brother is talking to Ceasar Flickerman, and they’re playing off each other like they’ve been co-hosts for decades. He’s charming. Affable. He could make this a career if…when he wins. And then Ceaser asks about a girl, his whole body shifts. He gets a little nervous, a little small, tries to shift the conversation but Ceaser ain’t having it. He pushes Peeta again. Say it say it say it, you little dork, or I swear to god. I’m staring at his face in the tv. Maybe if I think it hard enough he can somehow get it. You promised.
He clears his throat. “Well, there is this one girl…”
I sink back into the couch with a sigh of relief. There you go, bro. Took you long enough.
She even goes for it. When they change the rules(which I still can’t get over, but maybe young love is more exciting than child murder for those people.((if that’s the case, can we make it a matchmaking game? I’ll volunteer. I’ll host.)) I just don’t know if I trust it) and she’s up in that tree, screaming his name, I know it’s over. She likes him too. She tears through the Arena just to find him, looking very camouflaged and very dead by the river. He flirts, and she giggles and blushes. What? Maybe she’s just soft for him. Good. It’s what he deserves. Hard for everyone else but soft for him.
For a few days I’m worried I’m gonna have to watch my baby brother lose his virginity on national television, but as cuddly and kissy as Katniss is, she’s clearly not very experienced. She won’t change around him, she blushes every time they kiss. She’s actually sweet. A giggly, nervous, even precious little thing. She looks even tinier next to Peeta, so short and thin and fine boned. They fit each other. They’re striking together.
It’s all anyone can talk about, but for the first time I don’t mind hearing about it all. I join in at school, spilling all the secrets I know. It’s a little shitty, but I can’t help it. It’s so…excuse the dopey ass phrasing, but as one teacher said, life affirming to see. My homelife is worse, but if they really can win and win together, it’ll be like a real life miracle. Hard proof that not everything always has to completely fucking suck, all the time. That sometimes, good things happen to people. Sometimes good things happen to the people who deserve it the most.
The berries give me a heart attack. I’m on the edge of my seat and I don’t think I breathe the whole time. I don’t know what to expect. Are they gonna let them live? Are they gonna blow them up? Send in mutts again? Let them live and torture them on the air? I almost shut my eyes, bracing for the canons, but instead Templesmith is shouting, telling them to stop, that they both won, and he did it. He actually did it. I’m jumping and screaming and laughing and we’re all hugging even, because he fucking did it. He won, and he got the girl of his dreams. This one time, it actually works out for him. This time, Peeta gets what he wants.

My amazing friends
I think it's time I share with you the list of the closest friends I've made during this little journey of mine. I also decided to add a little paragraph for everyone, I hope it's not too sappy lmaooo 😅 ALSO, if you're not on the list, please tell me... I probably just forgot. Vi voglio bene 💚🤍❤️
Tumblr media
@jettori Well... one of my first friends around here. What can I say? I think you already know what I think of you and how much I treasure our friendship. You deserve all the love and all the cookies of the world!! 🍡🍪
@rattypatty BABY AGE!! 🌸 This is gonna be your new nickname here ^_^ You always bring a smile to my face (even when you call me baby height...). I genuinely think you're brave and tough and I hope you'll always remain as you are because you're amazing.
@fanfic-chan Such a sweetheart 🥺 Seriously, I think everything about you is cute. Also, I'm proud of all the progress you've made and of your new job. Keep going, you're marvelous and you only deserve the best!!
@kaerichan-yatta My Italian (and linguistic high school) buddyyy 💚🤍❤️ And SUCH. A. TEASE. AAAAAAAAHHH!! But remember, what goes around comes back around. (Although we both know I don't dislike your teases). Anyway, besides being teasy, you have many more qualities and I hope you know how unique and great you are.
@xiaosstepstool MOM FRIEND!! 🥰 Let's be clear now, at first you gave me Gorou vibes, but the more we talked, the more Yae-like you became (in the best way possible). But you're also so sweet and adorable... my heart can't handle this-
@xsezzie Shortieee <333 You're one of the very few people I can use this nickname with. I genuinely think that you're really cool and I really admire how hard you work. Although you're still a small bully to me!! 😭 (I'd say big bully but you know... height difference is on my side here lol)
@tickles-and-cuddles SWEETIEEEEE!! Ily but please, be more self-confident. I'm really glad you reached out to me because now I have another amazing friend, and I know for a FACT that other people would love to get to know you❣️
@wertzunge Tbh you remind me of a little cub lol 😹 I was kinda scared at the thought of approaching you (a big thanks to my social anxiety) so I guess I'll have to thank you for making that project about communication. Thanks to that I got to know a cute, little ball of sunshine ^_^
@intheheartofarainbow Idk if you expected to be on this list, but here you are my dear 😸 Your nice words supported and motivated me probably more than you can imagine. I'm glad I've met such a gentle soul
@skribblz AAAAAAAHHH you have no idea of how honored I felt when you gave me permission to write for your drawings!! I was extremely nervous at the thought of you reading my works though, since I was (and still am) basically an amateur... but your compliments really did improve my self-esteem as a writer (although I'm still rather inexperienced) 🌈
@vampirecorset One of the most mature and strongminded people I've ever met. I admire how you have your own opinions and stick to them. You're truly inspiring ✨️
@fresh-thomato LITTLE CUTIEEEE!! Let's be honest, it's adorable how easy it is to fluster you 🥰 You're one of the strongest people I know, always ready to listen. You're really special to me and I hope you know that
@simplysmilingdrew I WON'T TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH I APPRECIATED YOUR FANART BASED ON MY FIC JUST BECAUSE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE A SHORT PARAGRAPH AND NOT AN ESSAY 💘 Apart from that, you're always so sweet and nice, I'm honored to be able to call you a friend!!
@tickly-floof One word: BABYYYY!! 🥺 Because that's what you are (in an affectionate way obviously). Honestly, your demeanor is heartwarming... you're really a cute and sweet person!! (PS. Give Kiro a few scritches for me please, he's Baby no. 2 after all)
@leeviathaaaan Levi... or LEEvi..? Sorry, sorry... I had to say it 😅💖 Anyway, I really appreciate your support for my works and I LOVE when we talk. You're a really interesting person and I hope you agree with me here (since I'm 100000% sure I'm right)
@myreygn my fellow Takao simp 🥹❤️ Jokes aside... my Bashful Sweetheart!! Okay I'll get serious now... you're one of the nicest people around here, so sweet and cheerful, I feel like everyone would want to be your friend. But I can't let your teasing about my height and other things slide, hmph! <333
@mai-meiei Aaaaaww you really give me big sister vibes ✨️ You always have something nice to say and are always so supportive... it's a honor to have such a great friend!! Also, your drawings are AMAZING, cutie 🥰
@eliasiis Okay we haven't talked much, but I'd love making friends with you. You seem someone really sweet and funny 😸 Also, you're super talented (seriously guys, if you still aren't following him, do it right now)
@lovinglyroses Yuukoku no Moriarty is undoubtedly a great series, but another reason I'm happy for watching it is because your hcs made us meet 🥹 You are a treasure, for me as a friend and for the whole community thanks to your personality and talent 🩷
@rand0m-s1nner Aaaaahh the first time you texted me I had a giddy smile plastered all over my face!! Like, you showed appreciation for one of the fics I felt the most insecure about... and you're so interesting!! Another amazing person I have the problem of calling a friend 🍡❤️‍🔥

Chapter 5
“Hello, Hazelle, is Gale home?”
“Hi, Katniss, yes he is. Please come in.” The Hawthorne house feels like family, and it’s always cheerful, despite the lack of abundant food, or luxuries.
“No, thank you. I’m in a hurry. I just need to talk to him.” When Hazelle raises her eyelashes, I say the only thing I can think of, “Business.”
Not that Gale and I hunt together often nowadays, but she accepts my explanation and goes inside to get her eldest.
“Hey, Catnip, what’s up?” He is smiling, totally unaware of the news I’m going to deliver, and totally unaware of my fury.
“Peeta has asked me to give you a message.” He stiffens but tries to keep a neutral face. “It is going to be tonight; your group has to be ready by midnight.”
“I was going to tell you, Katniss.”
“When?” I confront him. “When the rebellion had already started?
“No, a bit before.I was thinking we could use the cabin at the lake for our families and Leevy.” He looks apologetic, at least. “This timing isn’t ideal. We aren’t ready.”
“Peeta said it was too early, too.”
“He has a lot of confidence in you to trust you with this.
I scoff at his words. “He didn’t have much of an option; he said he couldn’t come himself because it might be peculiar and could raise questions.”
“He would have told you anyway, Katniss.”
“How do you know?”
“He told me.”
“Since when are you two friends?”
“I wouldn’t call us friends. But we’re in this together. We are allies.”
“But I didn’t want to be involved in this!” I hiss. I am furious, and I don’t care what these idiots say.
“You are involved! We all are!” he shouts but quickly becomes aware of our location on the street and grasps my arm to lead me to the backyard. His words now a whisper, he says, “You don’t have a clue what he has done. You don’t have a clue how much risk he’s taken up until now and how much risk he will be taking from now on. This is bigger than just District Twelve.”
I frown at his words. He’s right; I don’t have a clue who Peeta Mellark is, because he sure as hell is a great actor. “And I don’t want to know,” I finish stubbornly. “He lied to me.”
Gale embraces me in a tight hug and whispers against my ear, “Katniss, I love you, you know that. That’s why I’m telling you; you will never forgive yourself if something happens to Peeta.” I nod, trying to hold back the tears that his words or his departure bring to my eyes.“Listen, my family will be at your place for dinner. Stay there for a couple of hours and then escape to the lake. Understood?”
“Yes.”
Take care, Catnip.”
“You too, Gale.”
And with a kiss on his cheek, I go home.
Mom and Prim aren’t at home when I get there, but their note says they won’t take long. I try not to be worried; they will be on time, but what happens if they aren’t?
To keep my mind occupied I begin to pack, just the essentials. The cabin is three hours away at a fast pace, and we will go in the dark, with kids and our belongings…
It is not going to be easy.
I’m in the kitchen cooking dinner when I hear my sister calling my name. “Hey Katniss, you’re home.”
Her joy has always been contagious, and even in the most dire situation, she’s the person that can bring a smile to my face. “And I am cooking,” I tease because it’s well known in the Everdeen household that cooking isn’t one of my talents. “Where's Mom? I need to talk with both of you.”
My mom appears in the threshold of the kitchen while I’m asking the question and looks at me with expectation. She’s seen the baggage in our room but stays quiet and waits for me to speak. I don’t think our house is bugged, but just in case, I signal to the backyard, and the two of them follow me.
“There’s going to be an uprising tonight, here in twelve, and most likely in other districts as well.”
Both of them gasp. “We have to escape tonight with the Hawthornes to Dad’s lake. It will be a long, tough trip with small kids; it’ll be cold; some parts of the terrain will be covered by snow or frozen, and it’ll be dark. I’ve packed the basics, but you should double check your healer kit. The Hawthornes will be here shortly, so could you please finish it?”
“Did you pack your dad’s plant book?” My mom asks.
“We can’t bring it with us, Mom. It’s too heavy.” She frowns at my answer. “You need to be realistic, Mom.” There’s a clear edge of exasperation in my voice because I already feel guilty for leaving it behind. But we need to be practical if we want to survive.
“I am not going anywhere without that book, Katniss.”
“It’s just a book,” I shout, exasperated because, of course, she had to be difficult today.
“It’s more than a book.”
“Mom…”
“No, listen. Did I ever tell you I didn’t say goodbye to your dad the day he died in the mines?” I shake my head; I didn’t know. “I was mad at him over something silly that I can’t really remember anymore. When we went to sleep that night I didn’t kiss him goodnight, and in the morning, I also refused to kiss him. He kissed me on the top of my head and told me that he’d make it up to me that night and that we’d work on the plant book. He never came back… I wasted our last night, our last kiss, and I will regret it my whole life. That book, and you girls, are the last reminder of your father.”
Her eyes are sad, and for the first time, I can truly understand her grief, but her confession brings Gale’s words back to my mind. There’s a knock on the door signaling that the Hawthornes and Leevy are here. The next two hours are quiet and full of tension, for we are all conscious that our life is about to change… forever.
“Ok, let’s go,” says Rory, looking at the watch on his wrist. It’s his dad’s, a watch Gale has been wearing since I’ve known him. It’s not lost on me, the meaning of my friend’s gesture; it’s a way to protect their legacy, like my mom is trying to do with my dad’s plant book. Because a war is about to start… and people die in wars.
We make it faster than we anticipated and without any incident through the fence, and we start the hike to the cabin. I can’t shake the fear I have everytime Peeta’s image pops up in my head.
“This is a good spot to rest for five minutes; it’s the start of the trail that leads to the lake.” I can hear the sigh of relief coming from Hazelle and Posy. “I need to go with Rory to hide our tracks, just in case, ok?”
Everyone nods, and I motion to Rory to follow me. Once we’re out of earshot, I whisper to him, “What time is it?”
“Ten minutes to eleven.” That’s good; I still have some time. Not a lot, but it should be enough.
“Listen, Rory, I need to go back.”
“You’re joking, aren’t you?”
“No, I’m not. I need to do something important. I will leave the district before midnight. You know the way, Rory; you can lead them to the next clearing and I’ll meet you there in a couple of hours.”
“I can’t do this!”
“Yes, you can. I trust you. You know I wouldn’t leave Prim with anyone I wouldn’t trust her life with. I know you will keep her safe.” The previous hesitation in his face molds to determination when he hears me speak my sister’s name.
“I will. I promise.”
“I’ll meet you by one at the river clearing, but if I’m late, don’t wait for me. We will meet in the cabin.” I turn around to leave, but Rory’s words stop me.
“What do you want me to tell them? Prim will ask.”
“Tell my mom to explain to Prim why my dad's plant book is so important. They will understand.”
When Rory goes back, I run back to Twelve, and Peeta.
I get to Victor’s Village in record time and knock on Peeta’s door, but no one answers. I realize I never thought Peeta wouldn’t be at home. I look at the windows and I don’t see light or any movement, but my eyes catch the light in Haymitch’s house.
Without knocking this time, I stomp in my employer’s home.
“Haymitch! Haymitch, are you awake? Have you seen Peeta?” I shout from the hall.
“No need to shout, sweetheart; we are here, and as you should know we have guests.” I go to the dining room with the intention of asking him what the hell he is talking about, and I am shocked to see two peacekeepers, Crane and Darius, sharing dinner with them. “And here she is, a bit late to help with the dinner but on time for cleaning up” he announces for the audience.
“Sorry,” I answer in a neutral voice. “But you told me to be here at a quarter past eleven.”
“I clearly said a quarter past eight.”
“No, you didn’t.” I frown, hoping our charade can explain my unusual interruption at nearly midnight before the rebellion starts.
Peeta laughs, and I frown at him. “What?” I snap.
He shrugs and looks at Haymitch, who laughs again. “It was definitely at quarter past eight, Katniss. You don’t listen when people talk to you.”
I see in Crane’s face that Peeta’s words have hit the nail on the head, and we are saved. I realise also why Peeta and Haymitch have made it this far, because nothing throws them.
“I will take the dishes to the kitchen.”
“I’ll help you,” Peeta offers, standing up. “I need to prepare some chocolates for the drinks.”
“Chocolate?” Crane asks, surprised.
“Oh yes, it’s the latest trend in the Capitol.”
“I’ll pour the drinks in the library, gentlemen. Please follow me” Haymitch says, and they move to the next room.
When we are alone in the kitchen, Peeta closes the door behind us.
“Is everything ok? What are you doing here, Katniss? You should be out of here.”
“I know.”
“Then, what are you doing here? Why did you want to speak with me?”
There are hundreds of questions I want to ask Peeta, such as why the peacemakers are having dinner with them, what his role in this rebellion is going to be, why did Gale tell me he was taking big risks… But I do the only thing I can think of; even if it may be suicide, I kiss him. Peeta laces his arms around my waist and kisses me back.
“I don’t know what this is for, but I’ll take what you give me,” he says, nipping my jaw.
“I didn’t want to leave while we were mad,” I answer him. “I wanted you to know that… that I care about you.”
“I wish I could freeze this moment right now and live in it forever.” He places one of his large hands on my cheek, and I lean my head into it, taking his warmth.
“I would allow it.”
“Will you?” he asks hopefully. I can only nod as tears pool my eyes. “Hey, don’t be sad. I promise I’ll be back.”
“You can’t promise that,” I reply.
“You’re right, I can’t, but I can promise I will fight until my last breath to come back to you. Because you owe me, Katniss Everdeen.” I look at him flabbergasted and he registers my surprise “Is that too much?” he asks “Do I need to apologise?”
I know I should be scared of his words that show his undeniable love for me, but they just warm my heart.
“No, you don’t. I wish you could stay with me.”
“One day” he says, disentangling from my embrace. “But, I need to go now, or Crane will be suspicious again, and you need to leave before everything starts.”
“And Darius?”
“Darius is one of us.” And that makes sense because Darius has always been a gentle person. “Listen to me now. It’s important. Haymitch is going to pour some sleep syrup in Crane’s and my drink. They need to think I’m with the Capitol, so I can send information from there.”
“Peeta…” I exclaim with dismay.
“I won’t be able to speak with you or see you until this war ends, but I’ll be thinking about you, every second. I’ll come back to you, Katniss. Always.”
“Always,” I repeat.
He kisses me once more and then walks out of the kitchen with a dish full of chocolates and vanilla.
That’s the last time I see Peeta until the war ends sixteen months later. Fortunately, the uprising in Twelve is successful, and the Capitol forgets very quickly about it. We are poor, and they have other more strategic districts to defend, but the war, as always , is brutal, and there are many casualties.
True to his word, Peeta doesn’t try to communicate with me, but Haymitch tells me when he can that Peeta is still alive, and I cling to that hope.
It’s a splendid spring day when the war ends and peace is signed, and I decide to go to the meadow to enjoy the sun and the feeling of freedom. A freedom we have earned after decades of Hunger Games and oppression. I wish my dad could see this new Panem, a Panem where Prim and Rory’s child, my beautiful niece, can live carefree.
I am so absorbed in these thoughts that I don’t hear the footsteps approaching until
I hear his voice saying my name.
“Katniss…” His blue eyes are on me when I turn around, and butterflies flutter in my stomach.
“You’re back.”
“They wouldn’t let me leave the Capitol until yesterday.”
He looks well, a bit thin but healthy, and that is all that matters. I run to him and wrap my arms tightly around his neck; he pulls me in close and buries his face in my hair. Warmth radiates from the spot where his lips touch my neck, slowly spreading through the rest of me. It feels so good, so impossibly good, that I know I won’t be the first to let go.
“So…will you stay with me?” I whisper with a bit of uncertainty that disappears as soon as he answers.
“Always.”

THE TRAIN BACK TO TWELVE - CHAPTER 22
Week 12 - Delly
"Hey, Leevy, do you know who that girl talking to Thom is?"
I rehearsed the question in my head about a dozen times, to make it as neutral as possible but it still comes out awkward and cringy.
"Oh…" She stammers for a bit, refusing to meet my eyes. "I think she might be a former classmate of his."
We're handing out sleeping bags to the newcomers, and I should have waited to ask her about it later, but I couldn't wait any longer. My gaze drifts to them again. They're just talking, nothing out of the ordinary, but two minutes ago she was practically glued to him.
I actually know exactly who this girl is.
Bristel Meyers. I don't know what she is to Thom, but I know for sure she was in his school year, because Bristel Meyers was the first girl Rye Mellark ever took to the slag heap. He gave us a full report of that adventure (or tried to, Peeta and I managed to get away, before he went into thorough detail).
She's hard to forget. She's taller than average for a girl, almost as tall as Thom, her hair long and silky going way past her mid back. Rye called her "exotic", to me she's nothing but gorgeous.
I'm being silly, I know it. But she's not acting like a simple acquaintance or just a friend. I try to focus on the task at hand and keep my mind away from those thoughts. I trust Thom, don't I?
Ok, I'm counting to ten, and then I'll look again.
Twenty,
I'm counting to twenty.
Then I'll look again.
When I do, they are both gone, and a wave of panic hits me.

can i be a bitch for a sec? ok thanks. i hate it when ppl who speak english as their native language treat words from other languages as slurs or otherwise rude bc the same letter combination is something like that in english. do you guys have any idea how many languages have the word homo for their word for the word gay. it doesn't mean the ppl speaking that language are backwards and homophobic or anything like that. it's literally just a word in their language. it does not hold the same language and cultural reference. please

Let's talk about Delly Cartwright.
Do you like her character?
What do you think about Katniss' description of her: "Delly Cartwright is a pasty-faced, lumpy girl with yellowish hair"
How did you feel about her exclusion from the movies?
What do you think happened to her after the war?
Do you have any fancast?
Any fanfic with Delly as main character or with her POV of the book events?
Thank you :D
@curiousnonny
@curiousnonny I am a Delly Cartwright Fan. Huge one.
I feel like Delly is the most misunderstood character. It's a shame that they removed her from the movies. She was a powerful connection to Peeta's life during his recovery from the Hijacking. In the movies they used Prim, but it made no sense because Prim didn't have an understanding of Peeta prior to the Hunger Games. Prim only knew Peeta post-74th Hunger Games. In my head canon Delly was present for everything including postwar.
Katniss's description often makes a lot of people picture Delly as a bad guy but Delly was not - she was more. Yet on a subconscious level, we often compare Delly to the other blonde - Madge. And we see Madge as a good person because of the way Katniss describes her as pretty. Society values 'pretty' people and villainizes 'ugly' people. The Princess is always beautiful and the witch is always a hag. Both Madge and Delly have layers like onions.
The fandom makes a lot of noise because Madge brought medicine to Gale. Yet we never really take a beat to recognize that Delly helped bring Peeta back to Katniss.
Delly does something no one in District 13 could do- she reminds Peeta of his humanity. She went toe to toe with a Hijacked Peeta, something no one would dare. She did it because she understood that in the deepest part of Peeta, he was still a good person who was fear-conditioned to be and act differently than who he really was.
Delly understood how important Katniss was to Peeta. How much he pined for her, the risks he took in giving Katniss those loves of bread, and how much he understood and respected Katniss.
Delly is the Mirror to Peeta. She's inherently good. She's strong. She's a survivor - not for nothing but Gale brought the people he was most familiar with from the Seem with him to the forest. (IE Thom, Greasy-Sae, Leevy, just to name a few) It's my headcanon that Delly did the same for the Merchants she saved her brother, and as many as she could. But also because she is the Mirror to Peeta she probably has survivor guilt. All of those people she couldn't save haunt her.
Why does Katniss describe her the way she does?
Katniss at this point in the story is so far removed from who she is and is simply coping, she's living - in a semi-detached catatonic way. So when Delly comes around and is this bubbly bright happy person despite having lost her parents it's jarring to Katniss. It's like a cynical New Yorker who needs 2 cups of coffee to crack an eye open - meets a perky out of towner morning person.
Not knowing Delly was angling to bring enough memories to Peeta's mind so that he could begin the deconstruction of real memories versus the implanted fake ones.
I do have a Fancast Nicola Coughlan during her Derry Girl years.

Thanksies @desruc <3 Gonna go through your songs now 'cause you always play such bangers on osu!
When you see this, post 5 songs you actually listen to and tag 10 of your favorite followers/mutuals!
katagiri - Reso*nyan*ce Fever
If you need a soundtrack of what it sounds like in my head, this is it.
Okita Soji - Samurai Ondo
Best Yakuza karaoke track, hands down. And of course I need to include something Yakuza-related here.
My Chemical Romance - Welcome to the Black Parade
I wouldn't be the same person if I never heard this song. It helped me to just live my own life and say fuck the haters.
S3RL - Fan Service
I'm just a filthy weeaboo who loves happycore. Simple as that.
Leevi & Leavings - Poika nimeltä Päivi
Gender is a mess. Sexuality is a mess. I got bullied a shit ton by someone called Päivi. Funniest part is, she was actually the headmistress of the school. That's got nothing to do with this song, I just wanted to include this to get some Finnish going on in here as well, and overshare some trauma since I'm gay and all.
I'll tag uhhh... I can't think of ten people. Let's go with @mcrmadness 'cause they love to talk about music and @hikari-yumi and @ally-i-guess my besties from another country.

Any tips for learning Finnish? I used to know it as a child but I forgot most of it when we moved away (neither of my parents speak it, we were immigrants).
Oh hmm idk if i'm the right person to ask since Finnish is my first language and i've lived in Finland my whole life 😅 but i do have some general language learning tips that have worked for me (i took 4 languages at school so i know what i'm talking about lmaoo)
Watch Finnish tv shows and movies. Helps with listening comprehension; if you have subtitles on in Finnish (maybe not at first so you can actually understand what's going on), you can also practice reading at the same time.
Listen to music in Finnish. About 80% of the reason i'm fluent in Swedish is bc i listened to a lot of Kent when i first started taking it at school and i was really motivated bc i wanted to understand their lyrics, idk if this is common but it did work for me 😂 a few artists i personally enjoy: Leevi and the Leavings, Ruusut, Pariisin kevät, Paperi T, Chisu
Find a native speaker to talk with. This is perhaps for a bit more advanced level, idk if you're just interested in learning the basics or more fluent? But if you wanna learn to speak as well then this is the best way.
Immersion is the best teacher really... just try to use Finnish as much as you can in any and all contexts 🤷‍♀️
Learning languages has always been easy for me so again, idk how universal these are but here you go! If you spoke Finnish as a child, it's possible that there are still some things that will come back to you even if you don't actively remember them. And if you wanna reach a conversational level, then you don't even need to think abt the grammar too much (bc the deeper you dig, the more headache-inducing it gets...... anyway)
Onnea matkaan!

Perspective Flip for Please stay away from me
@itsfandomsgalore
Including light one-sided Tommi/Aleksi, tw for past abuse
Aleksi was crying heavily into his chest and Tommi didn’t know what to do.
Holding his shaking body and stroking over his back was everything he could do at the moment, no words would be enough to tear Aleksi away from this dark place that he had obviously fallen back into.
They had been in this situation before already - Aleksi leaning into him with his full weight as if Tommi was the last pillar to hold him up and letting out all of his frustration and pain in the form of tears while Tommi was attempting to calm him down with warm hands and a tight grip and soft words.
Back then Tommi had hoped he wouldn’t have to do that anymore, not because he didn’t want to, no, when it came to it, he would always be willing to comfort his friends, but he never wanted to see Aleksi like this ever again. It had hurt to see him like that in the past and it was hurting him now, an ache pulling at his heart when he listened to the noises coming from Aleksi holding onto his shirt, the hiccupping and obvious difficulty to breath when another sob ripped his way out.
Even though Tommi would do everything, move mountains and whole words, all he did now was stand there and wait for Aleksi to calm down again.
When Aleksi was ready to break away from him, Tommi first wanted to see that no permanent marks of the incident would linger. He made sure to keep his movements slow, Aleksi more scared than he usually already was and brushed the hair away from Aleksi’s eyes. Although filled with tears and rimmed red they held the beauty, the light blue damped but watching him carefully.
Cupping his face gently Tommi inspected the red indents on Aleksi’s cheeks, growing sad at the prospect that they could stay for longer, reminding Aleksi of what happened and no doubt bringing back other memories.
It wasn’t fair, Tommi thought, but knowing that he couldn’t change it. There was no way to go back in time and get Aleksi out of there sooner, or make him not date this asshole at all, but still Tommi wished they would have done something.
“Did he hurt you anywhere else?” He managed to ask, knowing that Aleksi wouldn’t want to talk about it and rather forget about everything at once, but Tommi had to make sure he was alright.
With Aleksi’s eyes pinned to the floor Tommi couldn’t tell what he was thinking but he hated how guilty he looked as if he had done anything wrong. Tommi knew it was left-overs from his relationship; the guilt, blaming himself, all the question of if he had been different whether anything would have changed, and Tommi wanted to scream, that no, Leevi still would have proceeded to hit him and lie to him, that there was nothing Aleksi could have done to change him, but he could understand the wondering thoughts, the what if’s.
Because he had them too, and the guilt. And probably didn’t deserve it either.
“Just on my arm. It’s okay though, it barely hurts.” Aleksi eventually said, his voice almost cracking.
Tommi set his jaw, biting down on his teeth so as not to scream. Not because of Aleksi, but the circumstances that made Aleksi like this, making him think that he was worth nothing and nobody had to bother.
“It doesn’t matter how much it hurts; he has no right to touch you. Or come near you at all. I will make sure it won’t happen again.”
He would tell Aleksi this as often as he needed to. And he would have loved to have a word or more with Leevi, but he was more concerned with Aleksi right now, and besides the others were more than equipped to handle this without him.
Tommi heard a quiet thank you and then Aleksi was cuddling into him again and he wrapped his arms around him, more than fine with holding him. If he had to, he would stay like this for hours as long as Aleksi was comfy and felt taken care of.
But he knew they couldn’t, would have to leave for the hotel eventually, and the crew and others would want to continue tidying up after Tommi had thrown them out of the backstage area.
He proposed to wait for the others in the van, waiting for Aleksi to agree with him. If he wasn’t ready yet he could wait but they really should get going, a nice shower and a warm bed would be the best for Aleksi now, not the cold outside in the proximity of where Leevi had ambushed him.
Speaking of cold, Tommi assumed the shivers wrecking Aleksi’s whole body didn’t just come from the fear, but also the wind having picked up. Without further thinking he slipped off his hoodie and held it out for Aleksi.
“It’s getting cold and you’re only wearing a thin sweater. Wouldn’t want you to get a cold on top of everything else.” He explained when Aleksi looked at him with big eyes as if he was handing him something highly valuable.
It was actually a funny sight with Aleksi almost vanishing under the fabric and Aleksi must feel it too as he was showing his first tentative smile. With the hood pulled up and Aleksi hiding his face, but his hair sticking out, it made for quite a cute picture and Tommi couldn’t avert his eyes.
How anyone could hurt him was beyond him. All he felt while looking at him was the urgent need to cuddle him and press kisses to his face, all gentle and tender.
Sometimes he thought there could be more with Aleksi, if Tommi was to trust his heart, but he also knew it wasn’t the right time. Aleksi had to heal and find back to himself before he could even think about dating again and Tommi didn’t want to put any pressure on him. As long as he could care about Aleksi like this, he was satisfied.
Wrenching himself away from his thoughts he said, “Common I’m not carrying you.”
Tommi had to suppress a smile when Aleksi gave his best pout and puppy eyes and asked for a piggy ride, but he would not give in now. He wasn’t that gone. Yet.
To his relief they didn’t meet anyone on their way to their van and he let Aleksi climb into the backseat, following him after he had written Olli, hoping they didn’t cause too much trouble while also knowing about the malicious joy he would feel in case they did find Leevi.
His heart opened and most likely filled his cheeks with blood when Aleksi immediately snuggled into his side again as soon as he sat down. A quick break to get him something to drink and Aleksi was comfortably fitted into him and Tommi couldn’t deny himself to press a kiss to Aleksi’s temple.
He hoped that Aleksi knew how loved he was among all of his friends.
Turning on the radio on a low volume, he continued to caress Aleksi’s arm and side, and started to hum to the melody. More than pleased when he saw that Aleksi had fallen asleep in his lap, and looking out the window to look out for the boys, he was memorizing that moment.
Maybe not the accident that brought it on, but Aleksi trusting them enough to come to them, allowing Tommi to help him. Months ago, this wouldn’t have been imaginable and Tommi was so proud of Aleksi now after everything he had to go through.
