The way scum villain has so many themes about writing/the literary arts and mdzs has so many themes about music and tgcf has so many themes about visual art and how each character that represents each of those respectively has their own struggle with their craft (passion burnout, loss of control over their ip/creation, obsession and dissociation) that gets turned on its head as their stories continue and their art comes to represent satisfaction and connection and devotion and love

Noemí really did try to like Dulce's boyfriend. The truth is that she already had a bad impression of him as soon as she laid eyes on him, but she was determined to stay positive throughout the night. Then, her patience ran out and she learned that Erick and Ángel agreed with her. Noemí's always had a difficult time standing up for herself, but she refuses to let anyone hurt her children! Caruso is not the one for Dulce. He will only hold her back. On the other hand, Dulce believes Noemí is being her usual old-fashioned self. Her mom doesn't understand and she is being totally unfair. Like, get with the times! Take some risks, woman. And honestly? It feels odd trying to be parented this late in life, especially since Ángel was the one who mostly took care of her. However, she loves her family and wants to show them what a good guy Caruso is. He is the way to move forward.

Ángel: Girl... there’s no fish.

Dulce: Oh.

Noemí: Mija, are you serious? Why did you bring that idiot to my house? Where’s the respect for your parents?

Dulce: Oh, I see what’s happening. Yeah, it also took time for me to warm up to him, but you’ll end up liking him too! He’s a fun guy.

Erick: [Laughs nervously] I think what we’re more concerned about is... well, he’s not your boyfriend boyfriend, right?

Noemí: He doesn’t seem like the kind of person you should spend a lot of time with. If you’re only using him for funsies, just tell us that. We don’t mind. Don’t let him infiltrate your personal life.

Noemí: Not to mention that he’s an awful influence! He made you get a tattoo.

Ángel: Well that’s a bit dramatic...

Erick: ...I don’t think that’s related whatsoever...

Dulce: [Laughs] Mami! You’re blowing everything out of proportion. It’s just ink, and I chose to get the tattoo. It’s cute.

Dulce: Look, he is my boyfriend boyfriend. He makes me happy and I think we make a good team, just like you and Dad.

Noemí: Is that so?

Dulce: Yeah! I know we can make things right with you guys. I’ll talk to him.

Noemí: Fine. One more chance. That’s all he gets.

Dulce: I understand.

Jacks POV: you are supposed to be dead, and yet you are not. You don't know when you can die, or even if you can. Every time you look at a phone guy, you can't help but think if they count as human. If you count as human, without a soul? At least your brother the phone guys have that - and when you finally find someone who can maybe relate to you [Dave], it turns out that they are either entirely ignorant, or are actively choosing to ignore the fact that he shouldn't be alive. And then he gets death, and he's upset when he's achieving the one thing you can never achieve. You were promised that you would die when you saved every child, but that's impossible. They've either been gone too long, or you've killed children yourself/the person that promised it in the first place. You can never see you siblings again, they've moved on and you can't even visit them. It may or may not be easier or harder to deal with the grief, but the grief would still hit after the fight with Henry.

And then y'know also the horror of looking at a robot and /knowing/ that there's a dead child there when it starts "malfunctioning" but like that's the same horror micheal has to experience then again the whole horror of never being able to die is also there with Afton but there it's more of a parallel with Henry/Dave and the pitiable fear of death causing you to cling onto life but whatever I'm def forgetting something

Hey, here's an idea: instead of having Jaina mostly relegated to romance drama, maybe FotJ's whole setup could have been used to go into her views on all the political debates, and what it, like...

In her own words: "Jag, I'm the Sword of the Jedi. I'm the defender of this Order."

There could have been some very fascinating stuff there about what makes it this Order in her mind. Exploring what it is about the Jedi that she fights for. How much of it is her acceptance of her destiny as the Sword? How much of it is her personal moral reason saying that the Order is actually worth fighting for, and why? Maybe these are things she has to figure out for her first time.

Anyways, thinking about how the games are ultimately rigged as in the end it’s sort of implied combattants are put up against Rinzler. There’s virtually (ha) no chance of surviving that. Legacy’s version of the game grid reminds me a lot more of The Running Man (1987) than it does the Rome comparison it likes to use. Honestly, I’ve said this in a lot of prior posts but I view it and the two grids as “Rome evolved into running man” here me out.

Encom game grid has a lot more of the more classic gladiator elements from attire, systematic killings, religious persecution etc. The legacy grid is more focused on the flash and entertainment value than elimination. It’s about being flashy and fun, death is expected, maiming is delightful— but if you don’t show off what’s the point? It must be fun!

My comparison to Running man especially has to do with Rinzler, he serves a similar role to the Hunters and the twist of the film (spoilers for that movie?). If you do well, last long , get the audience to love you. You live. You’ll get recruited as a Hunter or in this case a star combattant. Best of the best,coolest of cool. The executioner. There is no “Winner” of the Running man, there’s a fake end made for them and they’re killed behind the scenes and tossed into a pit. There is no winning disk wars because unless you get that crowds attention you’ll eventually be sent to Rinzler. There’s no winning. There’s no living. You get your 15 minutes of fame and life then your gonzo…

I Also dont believe Rinzler is a regular combatant it’s more “My dog craved blood so I’m letting him tear you apart as a treat :).” Additionally a “you all have been such a great audience so we brought him back.”

And of corse it’s true for any blood based/gladiatorial sport but the level of vigor and blood lust from the crowd reminded me of Running man where the little old lady gets showered in prizes for choosing something we’d deem as barbaric.

Rebirth is going okay but I’m pretty busy between uni and work right now so I’ve switched over to reading more Matt Wagner stuff and. uh. hmm.

The man is interested in the grotesque and the internal-external expression of horror. Which 100% translates to what he's worked on over the years: Batman stories about the Monster Men, about Two-Face, about Riddler. Sandman Mystery Theatre. The Demon. Madame Xanadu. Doctor Mid-Nite. House of Mystery.

(Honestly amazed he got to write a Trinity story, but the contents of that story now make more sense to me in context).

But reading it can be a bit, well, this comic story, Faces, was written in 1992, wasn’t it? (LOTDK #28-30).

It's not that it's badly told, but the themes of body horror surrounding Two-Face and that very late 80s/early 90s ugly art style aesthetic (the wider cartooning style one, not the Liefeld/Image one) are a lot to take in and it's somewhat callous in how it portrays the humanity of the Monster (TM).

I really, really disbelieve that, Wagner. My understanding is that they largely died out around the 1950s or so, and your story here is more reacting to the early 1990s revival scene and the discussion surrounding the future of circus at that time in terms of the decrease in animal acts, the increase in physical feats and the ethics of it all.

It's interesting. But the approach to the interrogation of the topic is going to catch modern readers off guard.

Pavan is completely oblivious, too in love with Ángel to notice anything.

Ángel: [Whispers] Yeah...

Erick: I'll give him another chance... Nice shirt, what's your favorite album of theirs?

Caruso: Oh, I don't listen to this band. Their music is boring. I thought the design on the shirt looked rad as hell.

Erick: I see.... please excuse me.

Noemí: Your agua fresca is amazing! It's agua de pepino, right?

Caruso: ...Agua... fresca? No, no. This is my creation! I call it "spa water."

Noemí: Oh... clever.

Ángel: I'm not sure if my drawing is conveying the message y'know?

Pavan: Looks great to me. The colors play into the theme of not escaping one's past.

Ángel: Ah perfect. I was going to sign myself up for Color Theory 101 again.

Caruso: Color theory? What's there to theorize? Colors exist, obviously. Just look everywhere, haha. Am I right or am I right?

Dulce: Oh we have pet fish now? Since when do fish need music to sleep anyway? [Says quietly] Also, I sing well?

Various Worldbuilding notes I haven't had a chance to post yet

A somewhat more realistic proportions guide with canon iterator heights for reference. For extra consideration: the MIP Units have a height limit that PU just about hits. None of the MIP Units should be taller than them.

I wanted to detail this – Since the MIP Units contain a lot of Void Fluid, it makes sense to have a mechanism to get rid of it if necessary.

Of course, this makes a lot more sense if you're aware of certain information I don't feel like publicizing yet... :) spoilers and all that

lastly here's how LOF's "ears" work. Also... I think they should probably have openings in their clothes for easy access to all the stuff on their backs. Their cloaks and such are loose enough for the vents not to be all blocked up.

Also, small detail, but SLS was modified to have the handle a lot of the later units got...

LOF does not, though! She's had some modifications, of course, but only on her own terms.
