amaya/zari + "actually i just miss you"
When Zari ducks under the flap of Amaya's tent, Amaya's first instinct is to step back in alarm, a hand pressed to her totem, eyes widened in something like shock, and this reaction jars Zari for a moment. She stands still, hesitant at the entrance, already regretting having come, her body begging her to run away to prevent further embarrassment.
Though it's been only a few weeks for Zari, to Amaya, time has passed for two years (the mechanics of time still confuse her, and she's decided long ago not to dwell on it). It's a relatively short period, Zari thinks, and Amaya looks no less different than she did the day she left the Waverider - and yet completely new, like a stranger, all the same. Or maybe - maybe it's just the way Amaya's acting with Zari, like they barely know each other, like the memories have all slipped away into a black void of space, forgotten.
"Is - is there something wrong with the timeline?" Amaya finally asks, which confuses Zari for a moment. After a ridiculously long amount of time, long enough that Amaya's brows wrinkle in concern, she shakes her head robotically as the words process. So that's why Amaya's acting this way, Zari thinks with barely concealed relief, not because Zari's an uninvited guest.
"Is everyone okay? Nathaniel, Ray, Sara..." She briefly pauses, scanning Zari from head to toe. "Are you okay?"
"Everything's fine, Amaya," Zari hastens to reassure her, closing the distance between them - insurmountable, and yet so small, - with a few steps, a proximity that borders on invading Amaya's personal space, which, thankfully, she doesn't seem to mind. It's Amaya's turn to be relieved, her features softening into that familiar, kind expression, mouth relaxed into a half smile. A mouth that, from this distance, Zari could be kissing, if she moved just a few more inches -
Amaya surges forward, pulling Zari into a warm embrace which she melts into, inhaling her earthy, comforting scent with a gratified sigh that loosens the knots of tension in her muscles and shoulder blades. She's unable to suppress the shuddering sigh of relief at the feel of Amaya's arms around hers. An amused chuckle spills from Amaya's lips in response, the sound of her laughter painfully absent around the Waverider in a way that's pressed against her heart, and fuck, she's missed this. Missed them.
"Why are you here, Z? If there's no emergency on the Waverider, if you're all okay." She doesn't seem annoyed as if Zari's an unwanted intruder, simply curious, pulling back slightly, smiling with a tinge of sadness in her eyes, almost homesick, if she had to describe that particular look. Her heart swells with the hope that maybe, just maybe, Amaya's missed her as well, and it makes her brave in a way only a lovesick fool like Nate could be. Suddenly, they have a lot more in common than she thinks.
Be brave, she tells herself, short and concise in lieu of a motivational speech.
"Actually, I just missed you. That's why I came, Amaya. I wanted to see you, and I didn't want to accidentally fuck up the timeline so I had to jump 2 years and I'm sorry."
Amaya tugs her closer, more forcefully than Zari's used to, especially from her usually gentle insistences on affection. "I missed you too."
The words are music to her heart.
