so this is not a story I’ve studied extensively or anything, but here it is as I understand it: in 2004, lego was having trouble selling their town sets. a designer, henrick anderson, took inspiration from past sets for a bold new experiment: what if he designed a lego fire truck that was... actually good? his experiment was discovered by an executive with the amazing name of mads nipper, and thus the lego city theme we know and love today came into being. this lego fire truck, it saved lego city and arguably lego itself.

but now that we have good city again, is this one actually all that good in comparison?

the answer is yes. yes, it is. 🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒 it was, in fact, so good that it remained on sale until 2011, and any other lego firetrucks had to be different. another crash truck in 2006, for instance.

1. How did you get into tmnt?

SO. When I was little, at my babysitter's we sometimes got to watch tv/cartoonsand everyone once in a while it worked out that I got to watch the 2003 series! I liked it a lot! Then i got old enough to not need to go to the babysitter, and we didnt have cable like my babysitter, (and we only got one channel at our house) so I wasnt able to see it anymore.

Cue a few years later when we moved and were able to get more channels. I was channel surfing for saturday morning cartoons and saw some familar characters, it was the turtles! So I started watching that channel as the aired the last season of the 2003 series and also got to watch the Turtles Forever movie on tv! They started to do reruns of the beginning of the show and then replaced its time slot with a new show.

I proceeded to mostly forget about it. About a decade later i see a few of my mutuals posting about the Rise series, get bored and decide to watch it. I love it. I read some fanfiction and then go about with other shows. Then the rise movie came out last year and I rewatched the series again. Then I was like. Hey I really liked the 2003 series when I was younger, but I dont remember much of it now. I should watch it again. so I did.

Read some fanfiction and then was entranced with Lego Monkie kid for a few months. My monkie obsession faded and I started reading fanfiction for tmnt again.

And then.... idk I just got more involved with the fandom and started watching the 87 series then bought a 5 movie set (the three movies from the 90's, the 2007 TMNT movie, and the batman one) from Walmart and now I'm suddenly collecting whatever media I can and have actually written my very first ever fanfic for the Rise movie.

TLDR: watched the 03 series when I was little. Then watched the Rise series out of college and then rewatched 03 and now I'm obsessed with all turtles lol

8. Favorite villain/antagonist?

Oh man that's hard. There's so many good ones. Ones I love to hate and ones I hate to love. I think 2003 Karai is pretty cool as an antagonist. She's so loyal to her father and wants to please him, but she's also honorable and that clashes with his methods sometimes so she has this struggle with that and then she fights the turtles in loyal vengeance of her father but then she ends up helping them because it's for the greater good and I just... I like characters who start out bad but have a change of heart and are dragged to the good side. (Baron draxum is also pretty cool both as a bad guy and as a "Dragged to the good side" guy lol).

17. What's your favorite pizza topping(s)?

I love pizza, but I'm such a picky eater, so theres a lot I dont like lol. But I love ground hamburger and bacon! Theres this one pizza place that has a "bacon cheeseburger" pizza that has hamburger, extra cheddar cheese I think, onion, and a garlic butter crust! I dont like big hunks of onion. but other than that it's my favorite kind of pizza! (I also like ham as a topping!)

22. Have you watched/read any of the iterations more than once?

As I mentioned above, I watched the 2003 series twice (but really could almost count it as once since I only remembered about 5% of it lol). I've seen the Rise series twice now and the movie 3 . No wait 4 times now (watched it twice as I was writing my fic).

And I've seen the Batman vs the tmnt movie 3 times :D (I really like that movie, I'm so happy i have it on DVD)

rating lego firetrucks: the pre-minifig era

the there are a fuckton of these so this is gonna take a while.

#1255, etc. 1:87 Bedford Fire Engine (1955, etc.)

this thing is extremely a product of its time period, both because of its extremely fifties look and because it’s just a straight up toy firetruck and not made of lego brand construction toy. the bricks we associate with the brand today did exist at this point in an early form, and in addition to being sold on its own this truck was also included as sort of an accessory in some of the construction sets. I think there’s supposed to be a hose reel at the back that’s missing from this photo. 🚒🚒🚒 fine.

#655 1:87 Mercedes Fire Truck (1964)

this is clearly just #1255 with a different cab. 🚒🚒 interesting though to see the box. I’m not sure whether this also applied to the bedford truck but you can see that the mercedes at least is marketed as being part of the brick-based “lego system” even though it has no more practical compatibility with that system than a hot wheels car. clearly even at this early stage they knew their Brand.

#305 Fire Engine (1964)

in the year 1963, lego invented the wheel and started to experiment with the idea of making vehicles and not just buildings, leading to this first brick-built fire engine in 1964. it is, for the time, pretty decent! very amused by the ladder, and having a little firefighter figure is a good touch. unfortunately, apparently a lot of these parts do not hold up at all, and in particular the little trailer thing is attached by an elastic band that will inevitably break. 🚒🔥🔥🔥 look, the goodness is burning away.

#336 Fire engine (1968)

over the next four years lego introduced some new pieces like doors and cylinders and hinge plates and ladders, giving them the ability to make a fancier firetruck... and it’s ugly. this exact side-on view is kind of unflattering but it doesn’t really have a good side. 🚒🚒 this does however apparently have working steering.

#620 Fire engine with opening doors and ladder (1970)

a smaller firetruck, similar to the small ambulance #600, but I think I can call this one genuinely good for the size and the time period. also like #600, this exact truck was also included in several larger sets. in fact some of them are the same sets. 🚒🚒🚒

#374 Fire Engine (1971)

now that they’d made a decent tiny firetruck it was clearly time to give bigger ones another try, and this is better! not amazing, but certainly an improvement. also, like #336, it has steering, which you can see in action here. 🚒🚒🚒

#640 Fire Truck (1971)

the same year we got sort of a hybrid design, dropping down to the smaller size like #620 but including more complex features like #374 has, like the rotating ladder and the trailer. works very well imo. 🚒🚒🚒🚒

#357 Legoland Fire House/#570 Fire House (1973)

the middle truck here is just $640 again but with two different colored lights instead of both of them being blue, and I think the one on our right is more of a car, but the one on the left is new. looks to be intended as a pumper truck maybe? not really feeling it. 🚒🚒

another variation on the same basic theme as #620 and #640, though we’ve apparently invented windshields now. 🚒🚒🚒
