Rules of Surfing To Keep Yourself And Others Safe
Surfing is now more popular than ever. But, there are some basic rules to surfing you must be aware of since the activity can leave you at the receiving end of unlimited possibilities of disaster.
The golden rule of surfing safely being one should never go surfing in water that one is unsure of. The ocean and waves can be quite unpredictable. It’s better that you sign up for Huntington Beach surf lessons to gain knowledge about the different types of waves and how waves break will help you assess what waves to catch and which ones to stay away from.
Tumblr media
Here are some basic rules to surf safe and have more fun:
Sleep Well- Get a good night’s sleep before the surfing day since going surfing exhausted means you won’t be as alert and ā€˜on form’ as you are expected to.
Alcohol- It isn’t a good idea to surf under the influence of alcohol.
Stretch or Warm Up- To help prepare your muscles for the intense activity that you are about to get into, a quick stretch in the form of some downward dog yoga stretches and squats can be useful.
Learn The Surf Lingo- Besides common surfing terms that experienced surfers use, they also use shouts and signals when out in the water. Master the surf lingo. Some common terms include Hang Ten, Tube Riding, Snap, Floater, Pump, Cutback, Regular, Goofy, etc.
Understand Surfing Rules- Like every other sport, surfing has rules to ensure the activity is safe. Understanding the rules is of utmost importance. Having surfing awareness is as essential as it’s easy to get absorbed in the surfing experience and become oblivious of all that is going on. Besides taking note of the conditions, wildlife and to see if any other surfers require assistance, you should constantly be aware of all that is happening around you when out in the water to ensure you are not an impediment (hazard or danger) to other surfers and swimmers.
Check Your Gear- It’s a good idea to check your gear at regular intervals, which can quite literally save your life. Make sure it’s all in good condition. Check if your legrope is properly attached, check your fins regularly, and so forth.
Know Yourself and About The Sport- Knowing more about the sport will ensure you surf safely, singing up for surf lessons can ensure that. Your development as a surfer depends on your ability to take risks, perseverance, being tough in the face of failure and always ready to face new challenges when they come, not to mention the fact that surfing requires a high level of physical fitness and the ability to keep calm if you find yourself in areas where experienced surfers are heading straight towards you. No need for you to panic as experienced surfers will adjust their line of surfing to go around you. Ā

a peculiar irony
There was the time before Chuck the American came ashore in Sydney wearing white levis and waving his legrope at the disbelieving locals at South Bondi. Blokes who had spent the best part of their surfing lives avoiding the ignominy of losing a board in the surf. And what really hurt was that everybody who mattered knew whose board was arriving on the sand unridden, especially the luridly…

Watercolour on A4 sheet.., Missing the surf.. I think we get $5,000,000 fine and 500 lashes with a sandy legrope now if we go for a couple of cheeky sliders? šŸ„ā€ā™‚ļø The more we all stay home, the sooner this will be all over šŸ™šŸ¼ . . . . . #mattbozina_art #watercolour #surfart #goldcoastartist #beach #waves #painting (at Gold Coast, Queensland) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-bymKUJ95e/?igshid=x5inz81jx32n

While we see an array of amazing and different boards here at the factory, certain boards just stop you in your tracks and make you go, WOW! This here is one of those boards. Polished, clear 6’11ā€ Mid VISH with white glass on keels and a clear legrope bridge inside the swallow. All these things sound simple on paper, but anyone who knows manufacturing knows there’s a few things in here that can make a grown man break down and cry. Not so with us, been doing it all way too long to flounder. Kai sanded the thing to perfection, I laid down a patented supreme finish coat on there and then Matty has polished this thing so bloody well that it should be in a museum. Sure, black boards and darker colours will look great and photograph amazing when polished well, but there’s something about a nice clear board with great aesthetics that just looks right when polished. Custom heading off to @keelsurfsupply next week. (at North Coast Surfboards) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4Ds59undjS/?igshid=1l3hdq841ljwh

the patient ostrich; it started with a farewell. matt has stayed at the same backpackers since his arrival over three months ago.

(this is except for the three weeks that he spent camping at donkey (or skeleton) bay, which deserves a mention. that place is as desolate as it gets. if the freezing cold morning fogs and howling afternoon sandy winds don’t bother you, and you’re cool with jackals chewing on your swag at night and seals chewing on your legrope during the day then there is still the isolation and mind-altering boredom while waiting for the waves to come. i’m still not sure if i think what he did was insane or inspiring.)
so when i rolled in this place became my home-away-from-home too. this morning we packed up (matt destined for J bay via cape town while i was headed to windhoek via the gamsberg pass) and had a family farewell with the two gruff but genuine and generous owners, Lala and Francois. know-it-all Francois was full of advice ā€œbe careful, namibian roads are very dangerousā€ and ā€œdrive slowā€ and so on. i rolled my eyes, ā€˜mate i’m from Austraaaliaā€.
we drove the kamikaze highway between walvis bay and swakopmund. the fog had lifted early which you would think would make the road safer but the only difference was that you could SEE the taxi come hurtling towards you as it overtook six cars before dashing back into its lane, inches in front of the truck who was holding everyone up. i dropped matt off at the bus (which was to later catch fire), filled up on fresh fish and salad, fuelled up on unleaded, and sped out of swakop with a strong sense of the wind over my wings. past the dunes and into the sandy martian landscape. i grinned as i watched an ostrich walking by patiently, as if on some long journey. ’if she only knew how it feels to FLY!’
the smooth, organic salt road dropped away to a rocky, rutty one and the Rav Rocket began to shake vigorously. ignoring the advice of francois, i excitedly charged across the ruts. then, of course, just over one hundred k’s into the trip it happened. i heard rocks chinking and spattering in the back somewhere so i stopped and had a look. the left rear tyre was completely shredded and the right rear one had a puncture that wouldn’t hold any pressure. two at once! i think i’ve only ever had one flat in my entire life! i replaced the shredded one while considering my options. the quote for towing was 300 aussie dollars. ugh. i tried fusing the puncture back together with a lighter haha! delirium was seeping in. a beast standing on a mountain top in the distance turned out to be a tree when looked at through binoculars. ask for help? the occasional four wheel drives zooming past were like stampeding rhinos and none of them looked like they would stop. it’s sunday and NO ONE is open on sunday so the chances of getting a replacement are infinitely small. maybe i’ll camp here… i look around and there is nothing but desert. i feel infinitely small. i clamber to some cover atop a nearby hill to shit myself, then look around at the other animal droppings on my way back to the car. all vegetarian and nothing fresh. it should be cool to sleep here. the sun was setting and i had resigned to camping and getting a spare sent out the next day when i saw a dust cloud heading my way. i thought i’d give it a go, see if the rhino would stop. i waved my arms about like a silly human. it stopped! and inside was the greatest man alive, Widux and his four fortunate sons. Widux gave me his trailer’s spare and said i could return it when i’d replaced it.
with newfound enthusiasm i stumbled back along the way i came, this time sticking to 60 kph.
a purple and red martian sunset.
with seventy k’s to go i heard a terrifyingly familiar sound. chinking and spattering. i stopped and found the spare wheel on it’s rim. i kicked it dumbly and furiously and spat out a four-letter-word. the sun had set. the first passing car covered me in dust. the second stopped but i almost regretted stopping it as it looked like a criminal’s car. i’m not sure what cars criminals drive but this looked like one. then another ute or ā€˜bakkie’ stopped shortly after. commotion as everyone got out of their cars. i sheepishly told my story thinking it would sound like a scam. three tyres!? yeah right. but no questions were asked. the criminals were nice young gents who were super car savvy but didn’t have the right size spare. the second bakkie was driven by an old Salt factory worker, Malcom, who spoke little english and who had the right size spare. the criminals translated and changed the tyre. after a hurried instant i had a new spare on and numbers had been exchanged to arrange a guided tyre-return the next day. i was listed in Malcom’s phone as ā€˜shaun import’. i was off again! even slower this time.
relief finally came when i hit the salt road again. as i passed the place where i spotted the ostrich i thought about the ostrich and i, the tortoise and the hare.
on the outskirts of walvis the amber streetlights which lit up on of the ā€˜project’ suburbs looked like christmas lights through weary squinting eyes.
i arrived back at loubser's b&b with my tail between my legs. ā€˜shane!’ said francoise, grinning triumphantly, ā€˜what happened?’ all i could do was laugh.
ayayai my head hurts

Webisode one in our ā€œSurfing Over Reefsā€ series.Ā  ā€œBailing your Boardā€ will teach you the techniques of bailing your board in big waves over shallow reefs that will save your body, your board and your legrope. Christie Carter in association with WavePark Resort Mentawai discusses and demonstrates the best techniques when the waves are too big, or the reef too shallow to duckdive.Ā  Slow motion videography with voice over will help you to practice your techniques.

#GoPro Featured Photographer + Athlete @harleyingleby About the shot - This is hands down my favourite surf capture + it was shot on my #HERO3+ BlackĀ Ā back in May 2014 at the Telo Island Lodge, Indonesia. One of the best longboard sessions of my life! This morning we scored flawless overhead waves for 5 hours with a crowd that varied from 2-5 people. The tough thing about this POV in surf is you don't really want to wear a legrope. They flick around in the shot and get tangled around the pole. What also made this session so incredible was that in 5 hours i managed to not fall on one wave! I probably wasn't going hard enough haha. How the shot was captured - This POV was made possible by a prototype mount by a third party company thats yet to hit the market. It’s a professional grade extension pole that's mountable. I shot nearly all video this morning but switched over to 0.5sec Time Lapse for a few waves mid surf, and I’m so glad I did! It was a while ago now but almost certain I had it set on ProTune, ISO400, flat colour and low sharpness. #action #F4F #adventure #sport #random
