EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME

This was surprisingly difficult because I decided to go with shows that had finished their runs and am in an extremely nostalgic mood about tv today. I think I watched more TV in my youth and now I am more of a movie gal. (Haha, too bad the meme isn’t 8 movies to get to know me!) I don’t know if these are my favorite favorite shows, but either I was ridiculously into them (ah, fic) or I genuinely loved them or they hold a special nostalgic place in my heart.

The X-Files

Freaks and Geeks (A perfect one season show that fully captures its perfection in the finale when a Grateful Dead fan says she wished she had never heard the band so she could experience it again for the first time ever.)

Beverly Hills, 90210 (The OG, of course, and only the Brenda Walsh years. If you were not raging when HER BEST FRIEND and HER BOYFRIEND hooked up with each other during Brenda’s summer abroad and then made it seem like SHE was to blame for not being supportive of THEIR BETRAYAL, then I don’t even know what to say. Team Brenda always.)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (If we’re being honest, it’s probably just the first three seasons after which my viewing dropped off to sporadically at best.)

House, MD (The first two seasons of this show were so good and happened to coincide with when I was in med school so it hit differently when I was studying different pathway deficiencies at 3am just as it also happened to be the answer to the case of the week! Also lupus was never that rare, you dorks! Unfortunately, this show also has the distinction of disappointing me so much - I don’t even think I watched the last few seasons - by giving me the thing that I wanted back when it was a thing that was never actually going to happen and morphing it into this soul-sucking beast that devoured the show in a really terrible way when it happened. I am, of course, talking about when they made House/Cuddy canon and turned them into needy people in a fundamentally unpleasant way that didn’t work.)

Happy Endings

Gossip Girl (The OG, probably the first two seasons although realistically I am going to say that this show was great just during the first 13 episodes of the first season before the writer’s strike. Again, I didn’t even watch the last few seasons except for that Dan is GG reveal. But in the halcyon days of ol’ LJ, I was all about the fic and picspams and the mixes for these terrible idiots. Why doesn’t Leighton Meester have a better career than what she has when she was the best out of the nonjudgmental breakfast club? She has Adam Brody so she wins in that regard, but I need her to have gigs that are not bad made-for-Netflix movies!!!! Did Cobra Starship break up? Can we get a sequel to “Good Girls Go Bad,” which is somehow still a banger whenever a clip randomly makes the rounds on Twitter?)

This is my warning that I’m going to be feral about it when Succession and Yellowjackets come back at the same time at the end of this month.

The first stage of Marlene Dietrich's Hollywood career, when she was under the tutelage of Josef von Sternberg, ended with her being labeled "poison at the box office" by a disgruntled exhibitor in 1938, a label that helped push many of her contemporaries -- Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, Luise Rainer -- into early retirement. Dietrich was made of sterner stuff, and after a celebrated turn entertaining American troops during World War II, she carved out a second film career by taking on character roles in films by major directors like Billy Wilder in A Foreign Affair (1948) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957), Fritz Lang in Rancho Notorious (1952), Orson Welles in Touch of Evil (1958), and Alfred Hitchcock in Stage Fright. Of these, the Hitchcock film is surprisingly the least memorable. It may be that Dietrich, who had learned everything she could about lighting and camera angles from Sternberg and cinematographers like Lee Garmes, was too much the diva for Hitchcock, who liked to be in control on his sets. But the fact remains that she is probably the most interesting thing about Stage Fright, a somewhat overcomplicated and sometimes scattered mystery in which we pretty much know whodunit from the beginning. Her appearances often come as a welcome relief from the rather tepid romantic triangle involving the characters played by Jane Wyman, Richard Todd, and Michael Wilding. Dietrich sings -- if that's the right word for what she does, being more diseuse than singer -- a few songs, including "La Vie en Rose" and Cole Porter's "The Laziest Gal in Town," and wears some Christian Dior gowns as Charlotte Inwood, the star of a musical revue in London, who bumps off her husband with the help of her lover, Jonathan Cooper (Todd), who is also the lover of a young student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Eve Gill (Wyman). But Eve also gets caught up in the murder plot when she falls for the detective investigating the case, Wilfred Smith (Wilding). Also providing relief from the romantic plot are Alastair Sim and Sybil Thorndike as Eve's separated and slightly eccentric parents, and some funny cameos by Miles Malleson and Joyce Grenfell. There are some clever Hitchcockian moments, including a flashback that turns out to be a complete misdirection and some skillful tracking shots by cinematographer Wilkie Cooper. But Wyman, the only American-born member of  the cast, feels out of her element, and Wilding turns his character into a moonstruck milksop. (Whatever did Elizabeth Taylor see in him?)

Cook County judge unlawfully banned exoneree turned law clerk from courthouse over a phone, lawyers allege

Last fall, an exoneree who is now employed by a high-profile law group was sitting in a Cook County courtroom with a cellphone, court documents say, when a deputy asked him to step outside to ask about the device.

That’s when, a motion alleges, Judge Peggy Chiampas “began screaming loudly from the bench ‘bring him in, bring him in, bring him in.'”

After questioning him in chambers, Chiampas wrote an order that banned Robert Almodovar, who was issued a certificate of innocence in 2018, from the Leighton Criminal Court Building, an unusual move in a public building with a mandate for transparent court proceedings.

Now, Almodovar, through his attorney, is contesting the ban and asking that a judge other than Chiampas hear the matter, which has spurred a bizarre, monthslong process in which the matter has been tossed around to multiple judges who seem reluctant to touch the issue and roped in assistant state’s attorneys, even though there are no criminal or contempt of court charges.

“Here, the state has not leveled any charges against Mr. Almodovar,” said Judge Neera Walsh during a hearing Thursday.

“The court believes it lacks jurisdiction.”

Walsh dismissed a pending motion to substitute Chiampas in the matter and suggested to Almodovar’s attorney Steve Greenberg that he appear before Chiampas next week.

The chief judge’s office declined to comment, and a message left in Chiampas’ chambers was not returned.

The dispute began more than nine months ago during an Oct. 4, 2023, court call presided over by Chiampas.

Almodovar was in Chiampas’ courtroom as an observer, according to a motion to vacate the ban filed in March, but had work-related responsibilities in the building that day, including dropping off court documents and making inquiries at the clerk’s office.

Almodovar is employed by the Bonjean Law Group, owned by Jennifer Bonjean, an attorney who has litigated wrongful conviction cases in Cook County and has been involved in a number of highly-publicized cases.

Chiampas is named as a defendant in a lawsuit brought by Bonjean that alleges misconduct on the part of police, prosecutors and the judge in connection with the handling of a case against men who were previously accused of killing Chicago police Officer Clifton Lewis in December 2011.

In a statement, Bonjean said the order is “illegal. Full stop,” and added that the ban has left Almodovar unable to do his work, as he advocates for the wrongly convicted as a law clerk for Bonjean and other firms.

“Judge Chiampas then stripped him of that, banning him from the criminal court building in a secret order that was not entered on any docket or even provided to Mr. Almodovar himself,” she said. “Judges cannot ban citizens from public buildings, even if they think (wrongly) that the citizen has violated some administrative order.”

During the court call, someone informed a deputy that Almodovar had a cellphone in the courtroom, so the deputy asked him to go into the hallway and informed him he would need to lock his phone downstairs, where members of the public generally have to secure any electronics.

Almodovar replied that he believed he was authorized to have the phone as a law firm employee, but said he would comply nonetheless, the motion said.

Before he could do so, Chiampas called out from the bench and confiscated his phone “without determining whether Robert had the authority to have a cellphone in his possession,” the motion said.

She told him to sit, and said she would hold him in criminal contempt of court if he left the courtroom.

“The judge never determined if Robert could possess the cellphone within the courthouse; she just assumed he could not — apparently Robert did not look like someone who would be allowed to have a phone,” the motion said.

The motion contended that Chiampas “illegally detained” Almodovar in the courtroom for four hours because he was not free to leave without being held in contempt.

She told him if he consented to a search of his phone, he could avoid a criminal charge, the motion said.

“Not wanting to go to jail, which for Robert is particularly traumatic having been a victim of a wrongful conviction, he allowed the coerced search,” the motion said.

Almodovar, whose case rested on eyewitness reports obtained in part by disgraced Chicago police Detective Reynaldo Guevara, had his conviction overturned in 2017.

Chiampas interrogated him, according to the motion, then banned him from the building and threatened him with incarceration if he returned.

The motion to lift the ban argues that it is unlawful for a number of reasons, including that the courthouse is a public space, and that Chiampas does not have the authority to implement bans.

The motion says that judges are allowed to maintain decorum in their courtrooms with charges of contempt of court, but no such charges have been initiated for Almodovar.

Greenberg, who represents Almodovar, has sought to have the matter heard before a different judge, and the case has bounced between Chiampas, Walsh, Judge Kenneth Wadas and Presiding Judge Erica Reddick.

“It is obvious that judges in this building have some reluctance to wade into this matter,” said a motion on the issue filed in June.

During a short hearing Thursday, Greenberg argued that Chiampas is prejudiced in the matter, and is also a witness.

“She’s not in a position to resolve this matter,” he said.

Still, Walsh determined she did not have authority, given no criminal charges have been filed.

The matter will likely again be heard before Chiampas next week.

scream au (death, murder tw) where billy and stu’s (any fcs can be used for those two) plan worked and they successfully killed sydney and framed sydneys father for all of the murders. life went back to normal and it’s a few years later and one of them starts dating someone new. the new romance blossoms but after awhile together the partner starts to suspect that something weird is up and slowly starts to uncover the truth, but they’re in too deep and are already in love and in a serious committed relationship with the boyfriend who they now know is a serial killer.

gossip girl au where are muses are either a part of the original friend group, they’ve finished university and are just living their lives OR our muses are children of the original characters, they’re nearing the end of university or have just finished and are joining the world and are falling in love, but as their relationship blossoms, they start to learn more about their parents teenage and young adult years and it complicates things.

Marlena grew up in Manchester, raised by loving parents, alongside her sister Vivienne and her brother Callum. The family was a very rich one and never had to worry about money, they got the best of everything. Growing up, her sister Vivienne was very sick, there were many scares and Marlena remembers being very overprotective of her little sister. They were very close growing up and Marlena loved being a big sister. Of course they fought like all siblings but she loved Vivienne and was very close to her. Callum was a little moodier but they were still close enough. Marlena was incredibly close to her mother growing up and the two were always doing something together, going on shopping trips or going horse riding. Marlena’s mother also enjoyed baking and the two of them would spend time in the kitchen together and Marlena learned everything she knew from her mum. Marlena was a popular girl and she had a bit of a phase where she let her family’s money and her popularity go to her head. She was a bit of a bitch during this time but she grew out of it as she got older and realised it was so silly. She wasn’t better than anyone else because her family had money and she’s glad that she grew up and realised that fact. She’d have hated to be that person for her entire life.

Her sister Vivienne got herself into a bit of trouble when she had a fall one night after partying with friends. She wouldn’t stop bleeding due to her hemophilia and had to be rushed to hospital. Marlene kind of thought she was going to die and it was terrifying but luckily, again, Vivienne recovered. The incident however, prompted their parents to uproot everybody from Manchester, to a little town called Baberton. Marlena technically could have stayed in Manchester as she is an adult but she really didn’t want to be in the city by herself, she wanted to be close to her family, especially her sister, so she could see them often, so of course she went. They moved into a huge estate over on the ‘rich side’ of Baberton and everything seemed like it was going to be alright, but then all of a sudden shit hit the fan again and it turned out that their parents had been lying about something. Vivienne was adopted. Not only that, but she has a twin (though they weren’t aware of this bit) and that twin is here. In town. It’s unbelievable to think about. Her sister isn’t her sister... but she is. Marlena can’t really process it all and she hasn’t had the guts to go and see Vivienne’s ‘twin’ yet. Maybe if she stays in denial, it can be like it’s not happening. Still, she finds Baberton pretty and hopes that the family can somehow settle here and be happy. She’s looking at getting a position at the local hospital, as an orderly maybe. Marlena has always wanted to get into the medical field, though she didn’t fully complete her studies before the move which worries her a little.

Found out that Callum was stealing from their parents and blaming it on their maid. He also damaged things and blamed this on maids too. Their parents had fired a lot of maids and it turned out it was Callum doing it as some kind of stupid game or joke. He thought it was hilarious but Marlena was angry with him. Treating people like that was wrong and she’s hoping that Baberton might help him grow up somewhat. Maybe he can find a nice girl here or something but Marlena can’t shake the feeling that something bigger is happening.

Is obsessed with watching over her sister Vivienne. She needs to know where she is 24/7 and if she doesn’t text back, Marlena gets a bit frantic. She’s always been protective but it’s gotten worse as the years have gone on. She has intense anxiety about her little sister dying or getting hurt and being unable to get to her in time. It drives her crazy.

Wanted to leave Manchester because she was starting to get stalked by a guy in her university class. He was from a rich family too, everyone in that uni was really, but Marlena found him arrogant and rude. He started following her around campus, to the bus stop when she walked her friends after class, and sometimes he’d even drive behind her car on the way home. She was getting pretty tired of it and campus police were not helpful one little bit. One party was the last straw for her, when he cornered her in a room and tried to force her to make out with him. Marlena managed to shove him away and get out of the room, fleeing the party and going home, but the move couldn’t have come at a better time really.
