I was thinking about Midge and Lenny while working on a new chapter of “Very Blue Lives” (it’s on ao3, please go read and review. I need validation like Lenny and Midge need each other).

Anyways, I was thinking about Midge and Lenny in Miami and why Midge turned Lenny down.

Sure the bs Vegas train wreck just happened, and Carol kind of freaked her out, but those answers are boring.

First of all, he’s weirdly reluctant to talk about her career. In Miami, whether she knows it or not, Lenny’s avoidance to discuss her career is part of the reason she walks away. Flash forward to the blue room, he’s making it clear that he listens to her and promises to take her seriously, and that’s when she decides “yes, okay. Let’s see what’s between us.”

She needs him to take her seriously as a comic, and once she realizes that he does, she’s willing to be vulnerable with him as a woman.

And that’s a great step for Midge, who isn’t taken seriously personally or professionally, especially by people she loves.

They staired at eachother through the smoke of the resturaunt before moving to get up.

"Lets not end the night yet huh? I think there is still time to go back to an old haunt if you're up for it Mrs.Maisel." Lenny cocked his eyebrow in that oh so charming way of his. She couldn't help but let out a light laugh.

"What would that haunt be huh? The strip club I used to work at? The Gaslight? That motel in Miami? Or that room in carnigie hall? If you even remember that." She gave him a shy teasing smile, feeling her face heat at the memories that brought back.

"Of course I remember that. I remember every moment I've ever been so lucky to share with you Miriam Maisel. Though its not quite so ideal that I call you by your ex husbands last name." He teased her back, clearly flush too in the dim light of the resteruant. That night ment a lot to both of them. A culmination of years worth of waiting for the both of them, totally unplanned but loved. Miriam stood looking at him as she called back the memory of that night. How he pulled her tight to him when she tried to get up. A solumn "No." To show how he felt about her leaving him. Joel never did that. Not once in their marriage and divorce and remarraige, and the few times after that did he tell her not to leave him in that way. In a way that really ment something to her. In a way that made her beg herself not to get up. Not to let this man ever leave her sight. Not to ever leave his. To ensure he is totally happy with her on the road.

"I missed you." Was the only thing she responded before slipping her hand into his. "I really have."

He squeezed her hand and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. "And I've missed you sweetheart." She looked at him again. Lenny. Her Lenny. Back here, home in New York. She wanted to kiss him, she wanted to hug him, feel his skin on hers, hear his jokes as they kissed. She loved how he talked between kisses. What she would do to hear that again. And his soft hands, not just in her hand as it is now but all over her as it had been that night, caressing her and holding her so safely in his arms. She was only snapped out of her dreaming by the voices of the people around her.

"Hey isn't that the famous lady-comic?"

"Yeah who is she with?"

"Is that Lenny Bruce?"

"No, there is no way that guy is still around."

"No that's definetly him."

Lenny shrugged and gave her that wonderful smile as he pulled her out of the resturaunt, back into the snow of the street, Midge laughing at the act. It was all so absured. Lenny being here right now, people thinking he could possibly be dead. Her thinking he was dead up until a few hours ago.

"What do you think is gonna be in the papers tomorrow Midge?" He laughed along side her as they travled a familiar route.

"Hm..." She walked in thought for a minute, tapping her chin before coming up with an answer, "This just in, famous lady-comic, now seen with an undead Lenny Bruce. Has she expanded her repertoire to more then just a comic but a new-age witch?" He nodded, laughing alongside her at the ridiculessness of what she had said, and how it would likely be similar to what was actually in the papers tomorrow.

"What do you think Lenny?"

"Well I think it'll go something like this dig? I think the press will say something like, Beautiful Comidenne caught with poor smuck that was barely able to crawl out of the pits of hell that is Californias druggie circle."

They both laughed for a little. Exchanging short stories about what happened in the years that sepperated them, trials they face to become what they were now. Midge told him of the tour she had recently taken. How her bombing at Carnigie Hall went. Lenny responded with stories of California, bright sunny days in contrast with a cocaine ridden work force, and a joke about how constantly sweaty he was. "It's the real reason I came back to New York y'know?" he spoke, looking at her with a bright smile.

"Oh shucks, I thought it was maybe cause you wanted to see me."

"I wanted to see you for years. I cried over you y'know?" He looked embarassed he admitted that. He cleared his throat, "Oh well look! We're here!" They indeed were. A brightly light club in the heart of Chinatown. The buttonclub, run by Miriams husband. "Its more of an old haunt for you, but I think that both of us need a break from the comedy stage for a minute."

"Who? Me? Never. Speak for yourself." Midge responded teasingly as she pushed open the door and slid into the club. She nodded to the old woman at the enterance who let her in, but side-eyed Lenny as he walked in with her.

"Does your ex always keep old ladies working in clubs?"

"She likes it here." She smiled pulling him into a set of seats. "A martini with olvies for me please" She called out to a waitress before looking over to Lenny.

"Whiskey please." He nodded the waitress off before turning to look back at Miriam. His face settled as he looked at her within the clubs light. She looked just as good as the day he first met her. Stunning eyes, brilliant blue, shining everywhere they went, perfectly pouted lips a shade of cherry red from her lipstick she reapplied at the resteruant. Her outfit was one of his favorites, the classic black outfit from her show. Not showy at all but Lenny didn't care, she looked amazing in it. She looked amazing in anything though.

"You're stairing again Lenny." She smiled, calling back to the first night they danced together.

"Am I?" He continued to look at her, how perfect she was, how on top of her physical appearance she was so wonderful. She was kind, loving, and funny. So fucking funny. Funnier then he would ever be. But he didn't mind it, instead he loved her for it. He loved how forgiving and willing she was to welcome him back into her life.

"What is it this time?"

"A bug, you've got a huge bug just sitting on the top of your head. I don't know how you're not feeling that ." Silence engulfs them for a bit of time before he continues the conversation. "Since we are having this conversation again, will you dance with me again?" He speaks through a cigarette. When he saw her smile and nod he stood up, taking his hand in hers and pulling her up and to the dance floor created in front of the band. The smooth music filled his ears as he pulled her in to hold her, swaying gently to the music. They danced in the comfortable space that filled them, created by the music for a while until Midge decided to speak up.

She examined him, just as he had previously. His tired eyes looked over her with emotions she couldn't quite read. Emotions she hadn't recognized for a long long time, from anyone other than Joel. "Lenny, did you say you cried over me?"

"Oh boy, I'm gonna need another drink. Yes, Midge. I did. I was afraid that I wouldn't live long enough to see you not break my heart. Seeing you at the airport destroyed me y'know. You're always so calm and collected, but me. Ah not so much. And then the night Susie came to me and I turned her down. It made everything so fresh. I wanted to see you so bad. But I missed my chance then. God Miriam I've cried more over you then any other woman. "

"And did you?"

"Did what?"

"Live long enough to see me not break your heart."

"Thank god I did."

Lenny's eyes were watering. It almost surprised her how deeply he felt towards her. "Why me over any other woman? Even Honey?" He looked shocked at this question but laughed it off.

"Because Midge, I cared for you. You brought me back to the light side of comedy when I was going down a dark time. That night that we spent together, I told you I would never forget that you were funny. And I never did. I spent my days haunted by a woman who was so incredibly funny. One of the most important traits to me. You are also not just funny but so kind and caring. Honey wasn't ever that to me. Plus it's pretty fucking hard to avoid billboards and ads with your goddamn face on them. I wasn't kidding when I said, you are more important than god Midge." Once he was done he took a deep breath. It looked to her like he had gotten a great weight off his chest. Midge smiled and placed her hand on his cheek.

"Lenny. I am so happy you're back. Promise you won't go back to California again."

He let out a breath of laughter. "Only with you."

They continued to dance together, growing closer and closer till they were connected, only disrupted by their clothes. Miriam felt Lenny's hand slide to the small of her back, other hand cupping his as they continued to sway. His head dipped down, and suddenly she could feel his warm breath on her neck and next to her ear. He let go of her hand to shakily place it on her cheek thumbing over her lips. Suddenly, almost pleading, he asked "Can I take you up on that offer to spend the night? I'll laugh the whole time. Promise. And I'll remember you're funny. Fuck I can't escape you being funny." She could hear the smile in his voice.

"Just tell me one thing."

"Anything." He shifted to her, eyes begging her to concede with his request, and she wanted to, she just had to know:

"Are you clean?"

"Three months."

"That settles it. Come on now. I think we've been dancing long enough. " She once more pulled him into the frigid night, leading him back to her apartment.

Midge and Lenny ship

ok, so I have been growing an obsession over midge and lenny ever since I finished watching the last episode of season 2, few days ago. I’ve been following and reading fandoms and posts about how people ship them and how it breaks their heart that it’s NOT gonna happen..., since the upcoming season is around the corner, I want to point out a few things, I find interesting. 

well, let’s get to the point

I think the authors are deliberately planting a romance between Lenny and Midge and they’re pretty much endgame. and they EXACTLY KNOW WHAT THEY’RE DOING!

call me crazy, but I have solid evidence, I watched the scenes over and over and could find subtle, but obvious hints here and there! so here it is :

1. why should Midge be from a conservative Jewish family? back in 50′s marrying into non-Jewish families, even dating them, used to be pretty much frowned upon and if it occurred by any chance, Like it did with Noah and his wife, she could never quite blend in, no matter how hard she tried to stick to the religion. she was an outsider. 

Lenny Bruce is Jewish. so is Midge. 

If they were supposed to be just friends or Lenny was supposed to picture a mentor to midge, couldn’t they just use a fictional character or even a Christian comedian. hence, why he had to be Jewish? coincidence? I don’t think so! 

2. The chemistry, 

we all know the spark is there... ! it blinds me out every time I see it ... on the other hand, I read all the stuff about platonic friends ships, and believe me, I don’t buy it what so ever! they have such undeniable crazy chemistry between them, that can set the entire room on fire! I mean come on! It’s like Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennette from Austin’s pride and prejudice, would remain antagonists till the end of the book, and she ends up with the priest! it can’t be all for “just a friendship” 

3. The time span,

the Movies is set in 1958, the end of season two is set somewhere in 1959. The real Lenny Bruce divorced his wife in the same year! before Lenny’s divorce was finalized, he had an affair with a jazz singer, on the show people get Midge mistaken for a “singer” every now and then. such a subtle irony, but I find it a hint, a hint that declares “Midge is a love interest for Lenny, but they won’t realize it until the divorce is finalized” they don’t want to acknowledge the romance, and certainly Lenny doesn’t want to cross that line with Midge, He sees midge furthermore than an affair or a fling... there’s a real connection in here. 

4. the introduction of Lenny Bruce

Ok, that one might sound a bit odd. but I actually find it in favor of lenny-midge ship. so here’s the thing. so let’s face it. many of us cringed when we first saw Lenny (I even didn’t know he is a real person) bailing midge out for the first time, trying to be a little bit flirty, believe me....even I was like : duh ! another love triangle cliche! that dude is gonna be the new love interest, and compensate all the damage the douchy soon to be ex-husband forced on her! but we were not watching another cheesy drama, the writes were so brilliant, bright, and exactly knew what they were doing... they planted the idea of blossoming romance into our heads and “inception” the sh*t out of us... and yet, didn’t let it blossom. as the two had more encounters, Lenny started to turn from “the other guy” to “ the one that got away” leaving the audience frustrated and yearning to see something happen between these two,,. but not only that didn’t happen, but also, they didn’t even touch... thus, there were other annoying, dreary, love interests in the picture which narrowed the idea of two of them ever being together down to a thread... which subsequently made us want Lenny and Midge to be together even more! now after the season 2 finale, people literally are leaning on their knees, begging to God for “at least a brief romance”.... and it might not happen for another season.. they want the audience to beg for it! pure genius! 

5. the tribute to Lenny Bruce. 

OK, so we think the show is about Midge? wrong! the entire show has a theme of stand-up comedy. it’s not only about midge, but it’s also about the profession of “stand up comedy” and also one of the most misunderstood and underrated history figures on his own time “the infamous Lenny Bruce”. even the hardcore fans who worship him, still agree on the dark side of his life and how he was dealing with his inner demons. 

I read the interview with her daughter, noting she used to be bullied at school for being Lenny’s daughter. He died in such a tragic way and so lonely. I assume, setting him up with a fictional character, portraying “the bright side” and “silver lining” of his dark last years, would not only be disrespectful but a tribute to him. I mean the guy died so tragically and so young... at least he deserves an epic love story, maybe he had one ... we know a little about what was really going on his life... hence, I don’t find it disrespectful,  on the country, it will be a tribute to his persona...  even if it would be setting him up with a fictional character in an alternate universe. the point is “to remember him as Lenny Bruce, the lover and the person who presented a talented comic to the world”the marvelous mrs maisel” AND ... not just the guy who was dealing his last years with alcohol and drugs until his death... however, the authors will remain loyal to the “historical accuracy” and take him  all the way down the road, and kill him off eventually. because that’s the whole thing is about. but with midge alongside, it won’t sound as dark as it presumably is. it would be a “perfect love story”

my theory: Midge and Lenny will have an epic romance sometime in between season 3 and 4. the romance will be on and off, but he is going to remain the main love interest. as midge’s career starts to take off, Lenny's goes downhill. but midge will help him through all the good and bad and ugly...  she will be by his side until the very end. I assume they would even get engaged sometime, but never actually get to be married.... Lenny popping the question would be LEGENDARY ( I swear on this...midge never had a proper proposal, with Joel it was so juvenile and lame! as for benjamin, it was never a romantic one, his proposal to midge’s dad was so conventional like he was asking for a bank loan)... but they never get to get married... Midge will wind up with nobody after Lenny's death. she is not supposedly wind up with “a special someone” in the end, even if she does get married to someone else at some point ... she is meant to pursue her career and end up with one and only true love of hers for the rest of her life... the “comedy”.

Reunion Pt.2 - Midge & Lenny

As he held her the snow came down on them. He rested his head on her soft hair, taking her in. She smelled like soft floral perfume and cigarette smoke, just as he remembered her, he thought as he smiled into her hair. The worry that filled Lenny on the flight melted as he held her. He was worried she would hate him, scream at him, refuse to see him. But how could he think that? He knew that wasn't Miriam, it was just the common worry that filled him when reconnecting with his old life, especially a part of it that was as important to him as her. So he brushed all that worry aside and held her as tightly as possible, taking in the moment like it was his last on Earth.

His enjoyment of this moment was only broken when Miriam started to shake. He pulled her away just enough to look into her face, and thats when he saw tears streaming down her beautiful face. Her voice came next, cracked and shakey.

"Lenny...I... I thought you were dead." She paused between her words, as if scared to say the next. "I thought that you had overdosed. That I would never get to see you again." After this last sentence she burried her head back into his suit. He responded in kind by placing his hand in her hair. They stood in silence once more before Lenny finally spoke.

"Midge I'm so sorry. I know I told you not to break my heart but I think I did the same to you." He began to sway, taking her with him in his arms. "I was worried I'd never get to see that show corset of yours again and here you were worrying if you'd ever see me alive again. That was foolish of me." He tried to joke, but it came out flat, this reunion was anything but light. "Let me make it up to you okay Midge?" He pulled her away from him once more to look her directly in the eyes. He was captivated by them, those stunning blue eyes, beautiful in the streetlights, and emphasised by the tears that rolled down her face. "Sweetheart please. I promise. We can go to a diner and I'll fill you in on all of my misadventures." She smiled at that and wiped her tears.

"Alright Lenny. I'll pay. It's time I pay you back for the chinese food." Midge said as she straightened her hair, before pulling at him, suggesting they walk.

They walked through the gentle snow, shoulders gently brushing eachother as they went along. Lenny lit up a cigarette, and offered Midge one as well. They walked and smoked together in silence for a little bit. Lenny wasn't sure where they were headed but he also wasn't sure if it mattered.

Midge was the first to break the silence, "Where is Kitty?"

"With her mother. What about yours?"

"With their grandparents. Do you miss her?"

"Who?"

Midge gave him an incredgible look. "Who. The queen of England. No. Kitty of course."

Lenny laughed looked uncomfortable with this conversation but figured it would have to happen as some point. "Well yeah, I miss her with all my heart, yknow? But she is safer with her mother and that gives me some sort of comfort, dig?"

She smiled. He was still the same Lenny she remembered, still talked the same. Acted the same, looked the same, well for the most part. He was thinner, eyes a little more sunken. He looked sadder. But that mattered minimal to her, she was just so incredibly happy that he was here. Alive. Next to her. When he held her he was so incredibly warm. She missed being held my him. No one held her like he did. Joel was a good runner up but Lenny, no, he was perfect. Even with his addiction he was still here, he still managed to see her show. That ment the world to her, and she hoped he'd enjoyed it.

"So, before all this doom and gloom talk that is going to be you telling me how the fuck you got here and how you aren't dead, tell me what you thought of the show." Midge grinned.

She saw a slow smirk spread across his lips, "You're the same Maisel. Never change."

"But what of the show?"

He stopped to look at her, taking her hands in his and kissing it. "I was knelt before you and your show corset the entire time." She smiled at his response. A wonderful callback to a line that made her never want to leave his side. The one man that she never wanted to leave, her mentor and lover, the man she thought died, standing next to her, looking at her once more.

"Boy, I wish I knew you were coming. That way I could have thrown in some Lenny Bruce jokes into my show."

He smiled at her, a smile that warmed her soul, a smile she thought she would never see again.

"Well everyone thinks that he is dead, so that may not go over that so well."

She smiled back at him before pointing at the resturaunt they had stopped at. "We're here Mr.Bruce."

"Ah Midge you know Mr.Bruce is my mother come on now darling." He says going to hold the door open for her and gesturing her inside.

She followed in, and was seated at a nice table. Miriam was easily recognizable now, being a famous comedienne was a perk when it came to seating in resturaunts. They sat comfortably in the booth, picking up their menus and looking over everything before ordering two strong drinks.

"I think we might be needing them." Midge grinned to the waiter before turning her attention back to Lenny. "So tell me Lenny, where have you been?"

He smiled a slow sort of sad smile. "Its a long story, can you answer a question for me first?"

Midge nodded.

"Were you there, the night that Susie reached out to me about being her manager?"

There was silence as Midge lit up another cigarette. "Yeah Lenny, I was. Right outside the door. I wanted to make sure you were okay. I had heard you fell hard into your..." She trailed off.

"My addiction. I know. I appreciate the worry." He said before putting his head into his hand. Midge could tell he was exhausted, drained from the years before him. He never caught a break and it was evident on his face.

"I was so worried Lenny. I was afraid. I was afraid I'd never see you again." She spoke, feeling her eyes well up with tears.

"You almost didn't." He sighed out. "Listen Midge. It got real bad." She noted to herself he couldn't look her in the eye. "I did...I was in the hospital for a long time there. This addiction. It had me real bad, up until it did have me. The doctors in California saved my life, but word to the news was that I was dead. And for some reason they never wrote about me coming back." He was interrupted by the food they ordered coming in. That was the end of the topic for a little while. They drank and ate and joked like nothing had ever happened and by the end of the night Midge didn't want him to leave, she was afraid that if he left again she really would never see him again.

"Come back with me tonight Lenny."

He laughed, "Shouldn't I be saying that to you?"

"We both know my place is better then yours." She giggled.

"I don't know Midge I don't want to rush into anything."

"Come on Lenny, you can stay in the guest bedroom if you really want."

"That would make me feel worse." He smirked, taking a sip of his drink.

"Okay well then how about just a drink for now?"

"For now?"

"For now."

𝔸/ℕ: I know that this one was a little rushed but I am still really happy with it. I made Midge cry a little more in this then she did in the show because I feel like Midge needed to cry a little more lol so sorry if it feels a little out of character. Part three will be posted soon.
