headcanon: whenever leo meets someone new, he (at some point) tries to get them with the “updog” joke. he hasn’t gotten anyone to fall for it except (to his great surprise) annabeth

Frank: [calling Leo] LEO! YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS! I TOLD YOU I COULD DO IT!

Dionysus: What’s updog?

Leo: PERCY GET IN HERE AND BRING YOUR MONEY I TOLD YOU I COULD DO IT!

octavian takes a moment to try and process this. valdez often says confusing and misleading things, and he’s attributed this to his strange greek upbringing. in truth, leo is just... well, a teenager. one that’s grown up outside the walls of new rome and has therefore been exposed to things like memes, or the internet. and octavian, being as sheltered and generally friendless as he is, has never been, as they say, gottem’d.

“what... updog?” he begins, though he’s not offended yet, considering he’s not entirely sure what the punchline is. “what up is there for me to go? and that is not the appropriate way to address someone of higher rank.”

    Leo had to try really hard to keep a straight face. And he meant really hard—like, if he didn’t press his lips together as tightly as he did, brought up a fist to partially conceal his mouth, his twitching grin would’ve broken through. He stood there fighting the urge, watching with nearly unbridled delight as puzzlement twisted the augur’s face. The moment he finally blurted a question, Leo snorted and bit his lip.

    That was probably the closest he was going to get; he’d call it a victory.

    “Yeah, sorry, man. Super rude of me. My bad,” he relented, his hands lifting in a surrendering gesture. Leo took a lazy step back and shrugged, nonchalant. “Nothing much’s up with me— Thanks for asking.”
