The blueprint on which I base my canon is the manga, which is sort of strange because the first contact I had with the Yu-Gi-Oh! universe was through the (italian) dubbed anime that we all know about and I didn't end up watching the original dub or knowing about the manga until many years later, but I ended up liking the latter a lot more. Which makes sense to me because I was always more of a 'manga' person than of an 'anime' person. I really don't like watching anime that much but sure I love my infinite collection of manga. lol

When it comes to the ygo dm anime, there are a few things that stuck with me of course: the japanese voice actors which I adored (not all of them, though) and some of the filler episodes that dwelled on Seto and Mokuba's past.

Still, when it was time for me to create the world of 'Domino Blues' and assemble my own canon, I favored the manga canon over the anime. Mostly for the freedom that it would be granting me in making up my own ideas and headcanons about the characters and the world. So yes, everytime I write something about ygo, I always have the manga in mind.

Through the years, however, when my fictional world started growing and growing and storylines became more intricated and elaborate, I realised that unconsciously I was already incorporating elements from the ygo dm anime. I eneded up accepting this because I believed these elements would be useful in enriching my canon.

But being the chaotic creative mindforce that I am, it didn't make sense to me to just put these elements in my stories the way they had already been used in the anime. I don't like when that happens. I felt like I had to make those my own, to shape them into something that was close to my heart and give them a sort of an original take.

So I did. I revisited them, I created my own version of it that could fit in my canon. And when I say 'elements', I actually mean three characters, originally from the anime only, that have been featured in my stories: Rebecca Hopkins, Siegfried and Leonhart von Schroeder.

I still don't think the anime gave justice to them. I didn't like the way they were written so of course I had to reshape them into something more recognisable to me and my fictional world. Some traits are still there: Rebecca, for example, is still a child genius and the granddaughter of Prof. Hopkins, long time friend of Sugoroku Mutou. But I fabricated her entire life and the way some interaction with the other characters happened.

As for the von Schroeder brothers, they are more like 'fallen nobles', they still lead their german company but in the end I made them quite different from their anime equivalent. Also, I reworked the events of their meetings with the Kaibas.

So yeah, I used the original characters as a blueprint or a foundation upon which I built my own personal original characters. And I ended up liking the result quite a lot.

Maybe in the future I will introduce it to you, my own take on them.

Does anyone else feel like it would have been really cool if they had Leon, Mokuba, and Rebecca as teachers in Yugioh GX. Not necessarily replacing the ones that were in the show (except for Mokuba replacing Sheppard) just like in addition to them. Plus maybe we would have gotten to see Mokuba actually have a deck. Really it would have been cool if they had any characters from the original series as teachers but the ones I’ve mentioned are my preferences.

Sh*t My Mom and I Say About Yu-Gi-Oh!, Part 4

Me: Last time, on Yugi the AI slayer...

Mom: This AI is boring.

Me: So basically you want SkyNet to take over the network?

Mom: I’m not saying that, I’m just saying it would be more interesting if it did!

Me: It’s King Kong!

Mom: No, it’s not.

Me: You’re right, King Kong is cooler.

Mom: And this one’s not a giant.

Me: Mask “The Rock” Johnson.

Me: Wingardium Leviosa!

Mom: No.

Me: At least I pronounced it “LeviOsa” and not “LevioSAH.”

Me: Ha, dragon dong!

Mom: *laughing* He needs to put it away, nobody wants to see that!

Me: In his defense, he probably has trouble finding clothes in his size!

Mom: He should learn to sew!

Me: There’s probably not a needle big enough for him to hold!

Mom: He should learn to smith one!

Mom: Is he lying down or crouched down?

Me, applying usual hospital bed logic: He’s probably lying down.

Mom: So you’re saying he’s got a big ol’ butt.

Me, laughing and kinda embarrassed: Oh my god!

Me, after calming down: If I’m thinking about someone’s butt, I’d rather think about someone younger and more attractive.

Mom: *faux gasp* You’re saying he’s not attractive? He’s adorable!

We later found he was crouching.

Mom: I think I could ship this.

My mom thinks Leon’s adorable. I agree. She thinks he’s possibly even more so than Yugi or Mokuba.

Me: Heels are freaking deadly. Especially glass ones.

Mom: How could you not ship them?

Me: *giggles a bit*

Mom: The height difference is beautiful!

Final verdicts on Rebecca and Vivian? Rebecca has a bit of maturing to do, and regressed occasionally, but can be likable. Vivian is the worst. As my mom said: “The last person to mess with Yugi’s grandpa? He got turned into a zombie.”

Me: “Funny, isn’t the antagonist usually in the background? And Yugi and Atem are in separate bodies, what the heck?”

Me: “I’d like a hammock! I’d like to read in a hammock!”

Mom: “They should call Pegasus!”

Me: “Isn’t Pegasus a zombie?”

Mom: “That’s right. They should call Kaiba.”

Me: “Because I don’t trust Zombie Airlines.”

Me: “Kaiba changed up his outfit.”

Mom: “That’s because he is a fashion king!”

Me: [something negative about Kaiba, I forgot]

Mom: “That’s because you have bad taste in characters!”

Me: *laughs, would say that I have more refined taste in characters but knows that Mom would bring up the fact that I’m a Jounouchi fan as a counter argument, since she doesn’t like him for understandable reasons*

Me: “But yes, he does have awesome outfits, so I have to agree with your assessment that he is a fashion king.”

Me: “Whoa, dude. That dude is naked.”

Mom: “It’s Japan. That’s how they do things there.”

Me: “I know, it just took a while to sink in.”

Mom: Is he from Revolutionary Girl Utena?

Me: He’s more like Mikage, what with the — (tríes to explain why he’s like Mikage)

Mom: I was talking about more with the roses.

[PS: Design-wise, he’d probably fit in in Revolutionary Girl Utena. Long, improbably-colored hair, fancy clothes, dueling... only difference is he does a different kind of dueling. Heck, both are meant to parallel major characters in their respective shows!]

[Context: My mom’s an Encourageshipper, and so am I. We both dislike the whole Anzu/Yugi/Rebecca love triangle because it makes Anzu act irrationally jealous, and seems just there to add evidence for Peachshipping. There are better ways to make characters’ romantic bonds evident. Bad writing, in both our opinions].

Mom: “You know, I’ve realized I dislike Rebecca for more than just shipping reasons. Her whole personality is just as a love interest.”

Me: “Yeah. Take away her skill in dueling and her adoration of Yugi, and you have nothing.”

Later

Me: “You know what? Even if I adapt this arc in my fic, I’m cutting out Rebecca.”

Even later

Me: “You’re probably not gonna like Vivian for similar reasons.”

Mom: “Her whole personality is a love interest? Or romantic rival?”

Me: “Romantic rival.”

[In hindsight, she’s probably not even a real, serious romantic rival. Just a plot device to make Anzu and Rebecca jealous]

Me: “You know what? I’m going to have Mai replace Rebecca when I adapt this arc. I’m going to change Vivian’s personality so that she’s happy to see Yugi and Kaiba, but not obsessively so, and I’m going to have her and Mai argue despite liking each other.”

Me: “Hiram McDaniels is back!” (Context: We used to listen to Welcome to Nightvale together. One of the characters is a five-headed dragon named Hiram McDaniels. So, every time someone summons Five-Headed Dragon, I call FHD Hiram McDaniels.)

Me: “Guess which one’s a major character!” (Bit of a callback to when I said, “Guess which one’s the main character!” in an early episode, when Yugi’s in a crowd of background characters, when he boards the Duelist Kingdom ship)
