These are real bones of a small portion of six million people that passed away due to health issues as early as the 13th century. As Paris was growing, the dead were piling cemeteries which caused health risk to the living from decomposing corpses. Both King Louis 15th and 16th mismanaged the situations by going against the church to move the bodies elsewhere. The situation got worse during the French Revolution, where a cemetery collapsed because of the overwhelming number of bodies buried on top of one another. During the collapse, they discovered Gallo-Roman tunnels that were used as quarry wells during the Roman Empire. By the discovery of these tunnels, the French repurposed to store the bodies starting in 1786. The project took about 12 years to transport; the dead include famous writers, artists, architects and french revolutionists. By the early 1800s, tours were available for the rich to witness until the Church demonize the profit and the tours became a special events by permissions. Today, tours open to the public only allows a two-mile portion of the catacombs, but the tunnels have stretched to the outskirts of Paris. When my partner and I went to the tour, we observed over what was already staggering amount of bones, we can’t imagine that there were more outside our two-mile. The tunnels were small and the air quality was low. This site is not for the fate of hearts, I personally felt uncomfortable to even go near the bones. Please do not take these pictures lightly.
