so full disclosure, I never read the original novel, and the 《弯弯》 audiodrama should be considered a lot of things but a faithful adaptation? lol absolutely not (their own words)

this is actually a 网配 wangpei audiodrama from 2015, and the energy on it is utterly unhinged. it is simultaneously a love letter to and satire of 非天夜翔 Fei Tian Ye Xiang’s novel 《金牌助理》 Jin Pai Zhu Li, a novel that follows the misadventures of hapless aspiring musician Xiao Yi as he finds a day job to pay the bills while struggling to make it in Beijing. said day job? working as a personal assistant to the extremely frosty, extremely handsome superstar actor Lu Zhou. absolute hijinks ensue

this audiodrama is far ahead of its time, and also completely upends traditional adaptation by rewriting the script satirically and cranking up the speed. I screamed; I laughed; I definitely missed a turn while driving. words can’t really describe this production for its sheer insanity, so I’ll just link it above and call it a day

VERSE ; LOST IDENTITY (THE TRIALS)

The war was hell on Earth. Young and old alike were forced to murder and maim one another, millions were kept in pens and slaughtered like animals, disease raged and countless loved ones could do nothing but stand by while their families were torn apart. Violence and trauma was a contagion, spreading to every corner of the earth. Those who came back, who survived through the mud, sweat and tears, were lost.

Many withdrew away from others, others sought help only to find none. Lynn Langermann wanted to tell their stories - the stories of survival.

Her research would focus on all parts of the war: the concentration camp survivors, the soldiers, the medical staff, the frontline workers, the loved ones who had lost everything. She wanted to showcase the trauma caused by such unnecessary acts of violence. It was a project that would consume her very life, but the story had to be told.

In several of her interviews, a company name surfaced over and over again: The Murkoff Corporation. Some saw it as a refuge, others a curse. Lynn dug deeper, in an attempt to uncover Murkoff’s involvement in the war and what part it played now. Blake, her husband, volunteered to request an interview after Lynn had been rejected countless times. Wary, Lynn eventually agreed and it wasn’t long before Blake was granted the interview.

He never came home.

Days dragged on and Lynn filed a missing persons report and still no action. She would have to find him on her own. What she found instead was the unimaginable torture and desecration of human dignity in the Trials. She was caught, taken, and deemed a SNITCH. It’s only because of sheer will and luck she managed to escape the officer and reach the Sleep Room - or so she believed. In that place, Murkoff pulled the strings. Instead of bringing her back as a pawn to await her death in the trials, the medical staff drilled the night vision goggles into her skull and forced her back a player in Murkoff’s rigged game.
