NM3217 Final Project Reflection
I started this project thinking of using a bold, bright, traditional chinese colour scheme to emphasis my mixed bilingual identity.
Tumblr media
The logo is created by incorporating the ancient text of my Chinese name (黄珞) and my English name (Letitia)'s L and e. I chose these two elements because I find myself an "in-between" person, when it comes to my bilingual identity, and it is indeed an important aspect of me.
Tumblr media
(Out of the ancient texts I referenced, I chose Xiaozhuan as it is my favourite Chinese calligraphy style)
I started by plotting random elements I want to include in my design
Tumblr media
(As you see, my initial ideation was kind of messy, and was too ambitious as i wanted to include things like cloud, symbols, sun etc)
Idea 1
Tumblr media
(I tried to use the element of amulet to include my name)
idea 2
Tumblr media
(I tried to abstract my chinese name, and the final product I got kind of look like a girl playing ball game on a boat. However as this ideal does not include my english name, and is a bit scattered, I discarded it)
Idea 3 (Final idea)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I sketched out several variations along the idea, and finally decided on the last one below, with a square and circle variation)
Tumblr media
My initial draft of namecard and resume
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
 Critiques (organized based on tasks)
name card - add circle/ sq to logo Changed!!
- too many fonts (now got 4) Reduced the font types to 2, one for Chinese and one for English.
Resume - reduce the number lines, or make them less obvious visually
I took out the ‘云纹’ (cloud patterns) element in my resume and namecard, because it makes the information less deliverable and cluttered.
- visual lines of where to see next and visual hierachy like the infographic
I tried out a few methods to make the visual hierarchy clearer. Firstly, I standardised all the colours/font size of the headers. Secondly, I separated my resume into two sides (based on rules of third), and inverse coloured part of my logo. The two sides are then able to better separate bulks of the information, and make my resume seem less wordy and less linear. Thirdly, I added pointers to various points under my header, and indent the relevant sub points so that it is clearer to see.
Tumblr media
(My revised version, added somemore content on leadership too!)
- a bit weird for flags = lang
I tried a few variations to represent language, such as using short form, long text, etc. in the end I have decided to use language icons instead of flags to represent the language in the end :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- lang proficiency is too close to the edge /put header for the NUS section
I later added a bit more header!!
- put the circle in the middle
I adopted this feedback as the ‘circle’ element is usually placed in the middle too for Chinese traditional designs. This is also more aligned with the Chinese architecture design of ‘内圆外方’ which means that the inside is round and outside is edged, using symmetry in design.

-some says that currently, colour scheme is a bit dull, using brighter colours VS other saying that the colour should be even darker to contrast the yellow font.
I tried a few colour combinations (red, yellow, blue), (even darker blue and yellow), as well as (bigger areas of yellow and blue). Eventually I decided to use bigger proportions of yellow with a lighter hue of blue, hence making the overall colour of the resume brighter.
-smaller circle and hence can focus more on majors.
I adjusted my image several times, and changed it to a smaller dimension.  I also emphasised the presence of my majors by changing the font for it. This makes the overall proportions more attractive and pleasant to see.
For the font, although no body commented anything on my choice of fonts, it was very tedious to find suitable fonts as I have to match both English characters and Chinese characters. I tried cursive calligraphy for the Chinese fonts, as well as boxed Chinese characters but they all looked very unneat and super hard to read. Eventually, I decided to go with Zizhiquximati (自制区喜脉体)as both its English and Chinese gives a solid, sharp vibe to my final product.
My final product:

Overall, the project was really fun and explorative to do!! I love the sense of satisfaction when I come up with something and feel my personal connections with it!

Coming Attractions February 2022
Tumblr media
As usual, we present monthly previews of new movies being released. These are the movies that will be hitting your local cinemas (and streaming services) this month:
February 4th
Moonfall - Roland Emmerich directs this upcoming disaster movie starring Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson where the Moon is, you guessed it, falling. The film looks more like Independence Day: Resurgence (not a good thing) than some of Emmerich’s other disaster films, though I rewatched some of 2012 recently and it holds up. I am excited for Moonfall, though I fully expect the film, like the premise, to be a disaster.
Jackass Forever - Johnny Knoxville and friends are back for the newest installment of the Jackass film series. Remember, this film features stunts performed either by professionals or under the supervision of professionals. The producers must insist that no one attempt to recreate or re-enact any stunt or activity performed in this movie.
February 11th
Kimi (February 10th) - Steven Soderbergh directs Zoë Kravitz in this upcoming thriller from screenwriter David Koepp. The film will be premiering on HBO Max this month, marking the third straight Soderbergh film (after Let Them All Talk and No Sudden Move) to premiere on the streamer.
Death on the Nile - Fresh after solving the Murder on the Orient Express, Kenneth Branagh is back as Hercule Poirot (and as director) in this new Agatha Christie adaptation. In addition to Branagh, the film stars Gal Gadot, Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Letitia Wright, Rose Leslie, and Armie Hammer (in possibly his last role for some time).
Marry Me - Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson get married (at first sight) in this romantic comedy that will be released in theaters and on Peacock on the same day this month.
Blacklight - Liam Neeson plays a man looking for his granddaughter in this new action thriller from director Mark Williams.
February 18th
Uncharted - After fourteen years in development, seven announced directors (David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, Dan Tractenberg, Travis Knight, and finally Ruben Fleischer), and numerous screenwriters (including Russell, David Guggenheim, Mark Boal, and Joe Carnahan), the adaptation of the acclaimed video game Uncharted is finally upon us. Tom Holland stars as Nathan Drake, with Mark Wahlberg (who was at one point in the film’s development cast as Drake) as Drake’s mentor Sully.
Dog - Channing Tatum co-directs this comedy film alongside writer Reid Carolin that sees Tatum tasked with bringing a military canine on a trip across the country.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Following the trend of more recent horror installments, here is a direct sequel to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) that ignores all prior sequels and films in the franchise. Not to mention the redone title along the lines of Scream (2022) and Halloween (2018), though give the creators here some credit, they did change the title a bit, they dropped the The and made Chain Saw into one word. This new look at the face of American madness is coming directly to Netflix this month.
February 25th
Cyrano - Last month, the header image of the Coming Attractions belonged to Cyrano due to its limited release in January. Well, things change and now Cyrano is in wide release this month, with no limited release preceding it. For those who missed last month’s preview, Peter Dinklage and Haley Bennett reprise their roles of Cyrano de Bergerac and Roxanne from the stage musical the film, directed by Joe Wright, is adapted from.
Studio 666 - Based on a story by Dave Grohl, this horror-comedy features members of the Foo Fighters as they confront supernatural elements as they try to record their tenth album.
No Exit - An adaptation of a 2017 novel of the same, No Exit looks like the thriller version of The Twilight Zone episode “Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?” Keep an eye out for No Exit when it drops on Hulu later this month.
Now for a quick look ahead to March, my top picks for next month are The Batman, The Outfit, and Moonshot.
