Beads, glorious beads

 One of my great joys in working on beaded jewelry is having an excuse to buy crystal beads.  I can walk into a Michael's, Jo Ann's or Hobby Lobby and just be mesmerized by all the beautiful shiny reflections of light.

Where I live, I am blessed to have a store near me called “Wild Beads”. I did not know, until we found this store, that there were stores just for bead work. I remember the first time we walked into this store I was overwhelmed with all the beauty I saw. I fluttered from table to table, drawn in by all the colors, the shapes, the textures and shine. I wanted one of everything. It was just amazing to see. Everywhere I looked there was beautiful colors reflecting the light in all shapes and sizes.  And I was hooked. This was the store for me. We have been back many times. I love making polymer clay beads, and I love pairing beads I make with glass and crystal beads because of the uniqueness that each piece has.

One day, my daughter and I went in to “Wild Beads” just to look around. Almost as soon as we got in the door my daughter disappeared. It seems she was draw to the back where she found the bead barrel. Now if you have never been to a store with a bead barrel section you are missing the thrill of the hunt.  Have you ever seen those little rock bins where for a certain price you can fill a little sack with any stone you want?  When my daughter was young this was one of her favorite things to do. We could not pass a rock bin without her asking for a sack. And it seems she is still very much that same person.

Well, these bins are very much like that, only the “stones” we are searching through are about the size of a bean. This store has two types of bead barrels. One is loose beads you can fill a little plastic bag with, and the other has little plastic bags already filled. When I got to the back, I saw that she had her stack already growing. In fact, the lady that worked there had brought her a tray because her hands were already full and was headed back to the front for a store to get a store bag because the tray was already full. And I hadn’t even started looking yet! I knew that we were destined to leave that store with a haul of glass beads.

Now these beads are the last of their lot, so there is never enough to make more than one or two somethings with any of them but after bags and bags of this beautiful glass, my mind started mulling over that could I do with all this wonderful glass? As of today, we have used them in necklaces, earrings, bead-work, and more.

 And now I’m thinking, “I got in a new shipment of memory wire. I wonder if I could use these wonderful beads for memory wire bracelets or maybe stretch filament.” (I love stretch filament I don’t have to worry with the clasp.) Now where did I put my stash of polymer beads.  I see bracelets in my future. And maybe another trip to the bead store.

Why Naked?

Decades past the exit of colonialists both locally and across the expanse of the African continent, the concept of nudity , conversations about and its public display have long been considered taboo, constantly eliciting thoughts and comments that seek to deprave those involved of their dignity ,freedom of thought and expression while also portraying and accusing them of perversion, indecent exposure, subversion of cultural norms, and gross sexual connotations with the idea of nudity itself  bringing about public condemnation on those involved.Through self-taught techniques and an eye for lighting and detail, my work strives to foster celebration around the concept of nudity both through conversation and production of works that canvas the idea both in the traditional and contemporary African societies.My body of work looks forward to a future that is devoid of any prejudice towards body states, a world appreciative of whatever flaws each of us comes with and one that is fully supportive of those undergoing issues either physical, or emotional, a world that embraces the concepts of sexuality and equality among both gender and non-gender defined states.
