Culinary and traditional arts merge on at Martine’s with curator Sylvia’s second group showing It Feels Like Love upstairs on the gallery walls for our second LexArts Gallery Hop this Friday evening, March 17, 2023 from 5 pm to 7 pm. The central Kentucky artists works featured include Buoyant Blooms by Julie Quick, Flight by Kiptoo, Coastal Morning by Cissy Hamilton, Triptych by Lavon Williams, Our Tomorrows by Cat Grall, others by Christine Kuhn, Lennon Michaelski, SCAPA Student Crosby Chapman, cake art by Martine and by all the artists many many more. I definitely walked into this project without a clear-cut idea of what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted my magazine to talk about leisure activities and the font I was most interested in using, but that was about it. The colors used in my original Style Tile and the colors incorporated into the final spreads differ slightly. I kept the blue color because it gave a cool tone to the relatively warm colors that were accented throughout the spreads. My once vibrant red became a weaker, copper tone, in order to signify warmth and comfort. The light egg color is more of a small accent piece than anything else, I only put it in places where it could definitely be seen. I was really happy with the font I choose for my Style Tile, and I’m very happy with how it came out in the final product. Text that was a smaller size, such as the byline, captions and pull quote, were kept bold and non-italicized in order for these parts to be as legible as possible.
Critiques were probably the most helpful for me, especially since I would get stuck in some parts (like how to line something up, what colors to use where, etc.). After our first progress critique, I made sure to level out the paragraphing and wording in the first spread so that both sides are evenly spaced and centered around the recipe box. I also made sure to do some technical corrections such as making sure all of my textboxes started and ended within the same place. Our second and final progress critique really focused on my second spread. People liked the way I set up my book genres and titles, but many people expressed concern pertaining to the original placement of my headline and pull quote. I had first put my headline on the bottom, hoping that the difference from more normal layouts would cause the reader to look at the page longer. I also laid the pull quote over both pages in a way that people said may be hard to read or interpret, so I made sure to change that as well. after messing around with the placement of everything for a while, I decided to bring the headline to the top, bring the pictures and articles up, and reserve the remaining open space for the pull quote. Someone also suggested that I make sure to put my magazine’s name on each spread; since the magazine title is really interesting, and I didn’t want that to be a cool idea I made that I never actually used.
I really feel like my project was overall successful; it really looks like something that would be put in a magazine. My favorite spread was probably the bath bomb one. I’m incredibly proud of that picture I took, since I have absolutely no knowledge in photography, or how to make a picture look even remotely professional from an IPhone’s camera. I think everything flowed together nicely, and the similarity between my Style Tile’s blue and the center bath bomb’s blue really forced everything to pull in together nicely.
The biggest challenge I had was definitely having trouble in having solid inspiration or a vision of what I wanted and actually sticking with it. Since this was the first time I had ever opened InDesign, however, I’m really pleased with the overall outcome.

The merging of culinary and traditional arts at Martine’s continues. Curator Sylvia Cerel-Suhl has us signed up with Lex Arts, and we are hosting our first Gallery Hop at the shop this Friday January 20 from 5 pm to 8 pm. See Sylvia’s traditional art group showing Feels Like Home on display & for sale, meet artists & art lovers and enjoy complimentary savory bites & drink sips in the gallery upstairs. If you desire the culinary too, we’ll have a pastry, drink and savory selection available downstairs. Many thanks to the Central Kentucky artists Cat Grall, Cissy Hamilton, Sarah Heller, Lennon Michalski, Julie Quick, Kiptoo Tarus, LaVon Williams and Sylvia herself for displaying at Martine’s. And, much appreciation to Lex Arts for including us in the Hop #traditionalarts #culinaryart #lexarts #galleryhoplex #galleryhop #bakeryart #supportlocalart #supportlocalbakers #martinespastries #bakerycafecakes #lexingtonkentucky 👩‍🎨 👨‍🎨 🙏 @sylviacerelsuhl @lexarts @cissyhamilton @sehellerstudio @lennonmichalski @jaquick28 @kiptoootarus @lavonvanwilliamsjr (at Martine's Pastries) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnmQ8xzuRMn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
