Thoughts on the Death of the author theory

The theory of “Death of the author” by Barthes is very intriguing to me because in my opinion it is currently present throughout our society. When an image or really any type of media is released to the public everyone will form their own opinion despite the intended meaning. These meanings can be misconstrued on a large scale depending on the situation. For example, politicians sometimes release unsavory photos of each other or misuse sound bites from one another. These photos or sound bites are often released with the intention of making the public dislike the figure, but their supporters may come to their defense and agree with who they support. Leaving two different sides with opposing meanings despite the one meaning that was intended by the author or in this case campaign team. However, I think the theory also relates to a lighter tone when it comes to spin offs of popular tv shows. Many shows that came out back in the 2000s or even further back are getting spinoffs and often feature call backs to the original series. When writing these callback scenes or showing nostalgic images only viewers of the original show would understand the author's, or director’s in this case, true intent. For example, the show Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin was recently released and was a spinoff of the incredibly popular Pretty Little Liars that debuted back in 2010 for seven seasons. In the rebooted show, the mean girl Karen wears a yellow top that is the same shade of yellow that the main mean girl Allison wore in the original, to signify to returning viewers that she is the new show's queen bee. While I understand this reference because I loved the original show, my boyfriend who was watching the show with me didn’t think anything of it until I explained the meaning of it to him. He thought there was a completely different meaning behind the sweater and thought the color was to show how good she was at faking her kind attitude. This is a great example of how our different meanings are reconstructed through context, which directly relates to Barthes theory.
