The Camarilla Court

Information about the camarilla court, whose appointed members act as advisors to the High Count and High Countess of the Anti-Fairies.

What Is the Camarilla Court?

The camarilla court is made up of twelve people who support and advise the High Count and High Countess of the Anti-Fairies, along with an additional thirteenth member (the First General) who steps in if it is necessary to break gridlock arguments. If the First General has to break a gridlock, it’s expected that the decision he backed will be the official decision, end of discussion. In Riddleverse canon, the people who attended Anti-Cosmo’s meeting in “Fairly Odd Baby” were members of the camarilla court.

All together, the members of the camarilla court and the High Count and Countess represent the seven elements of the Fae zodiac. After the High Count is coronated, he selects six Anti-Fairies to hold the seats on his half of the camarilla. Each member must have been born in a different year of the zodiac than the one he was born in. The High Countess does likewise following her coronation.

The High Count and Countess can rearrange their half of the camarilla if they wish, releasing members from their duties and appointing new ones. Although they are legally allowed to appoint anyone to their court (including friends, family members, honey-lock partners, and random citizens), the expectation is that those from aristocratic families will be appointed. It may ruffle feathers if aristocrats are bypassed in favor of commoners.

What Do the Camarilla Members Do?

The members of the camarilla court are considered nobility in Anti-Fairy society for as long as they hold their seat on the court, and are welcome to live at the Blue Castle with their mates and children if applicable. Camarilla members and their mates sleep in the camarilla roosting room with the High Count and Countess. The camarilla do not create laws for Anti-Fairy society, but they are political figures who are well-known across Anti-Fairy World.

The High Count and High Countess always have final say over what actions are taken in their part of the government (the executive branch). Decisions are not made with unanimous votes and cannot be shot down and ended by the rest of the camarilla. Camarilla members merely attend meetings and advise the High Count and Countess.

Along with offering advice, the camarilla court is also invaluable when throwing large celebrations, ceremonies, or helping the two annual Anti-Fairy migrations run smoothly. If someone has a problem, they are usually directed to the camarilla court, preventing their superiors from being overwhelmed with visitors. They also help to organize paperwork and oversee daily tasks at the Blue Castle such as informing cooks on the size of meals for the day, keeping lookout for intruders, tending to the gardens, settling disputes, and educating young Anti-Fairies at the Castle. They check in with merchants and watch the borders to make sure nothing is being illegally smuggled in or out of Anti-Fairy World. During times of war, they help the First General lead troops into battle.

One thing is certain: Members of the camarilla court are always kept busy.

The Camarilla and the Spirits

A few members of the camarilla court may also act as mediums to the zodiac spirits (Nature spirits and mediums were further discussed in the nature spirit overview post, HERE). It may take a long time for a zodiac spirit to choose one of the two candidates on the camarilla as their champion, or they may not choose one at all.

Sometimes a nature spirit known for accepting mediums easily will decide that don’t like the new option. They might switch to the other option or refuse both. On some occasions, a zodiac spirit may throw a fit that their preferred medium is no longer on the camarilla, which may force the High Count or Countess to reinstate the former member in order to appease the upset spirit. Sometimes a spirit will select a non-camarilla member for their medium, which usually forces the High Count or Countess to bring the new face into the court and let a former member go.

The High Count and Countess almost always act as mediums to their respective nature spirit. If they are born in the same year of the zodiac, only one can host the spirit at a time. The spirit might choose to switch between them on occasion or may just stick with one during their reign.

Changes

Each time a new High Count or High Countess is coronated, the appropriate half of the camarilla court is wiped and the new ruler can pick six members of their choice. Sometimes all six faces will be new, sometimes a few who worked under the former High Count or Countess will take their places again.

It’s expected that the camarilla court will always be kept full. It’s acceptable for a seat or two to remain open for a while, especially if a member died unexpectedly and a replacement is being searched for. However, seats are not supposed to remain open for long periods of time, and Anti-Fairies would get very upset if a High Count and Countess disbanded the entire camarilla and refused to appoint anyone.

When a new member is appointed to the court, this is announced through Anti-Fairy World; members of the camarilla are always made public. New members may be welcomed into the court with a small ceremony at the Blue Castle, but they are not coronated at the Lia Fáil the way major positions of power are.

A corrupt High Count or Countess can easily appoint a corrupt camarilla court since members are hand-picked and not voted into their positions by the Anti-Fairy public. There is no system to prevent this. Lower-class Anti-Fairies put great faith in the camarilla and High Countess, and despite a few corrupt points in its history, the Anti-Fairy government appears to manage itself all right.

Succession

If both the High Count and High Countess die without an heir (or seem to be missing for an extended period of time with no warning), then their successors come from the camarilla. If they die in the Water year, then the two members of the camarilla who represent the Water year on the zodiac become the new High Count and High Countess (Both titles are always used regardless of the gender of the people who hold them). Anti-Cosmo is the Water representative on his half of the camarilla; if he and Anti-Wanda died without an heir, then the Water representative from Anti-Wanda’s half of the camarilla would take command and have the option of selecting anyone he or she wants to take the other position of power. If the High Count and Countess were born in the same year on the zodiac and both die that year without an heir, then the representatives of the following year on the zodiac take command.

Thus, selecting people for the camarilla court is an important task because they could potentially take over someday. If you are High Count or Countess, you may wish to keep a close eye on those next in line in case they’re plotting to kill your Fairy counterparts and take over. The potential successors rotate each year as the zodiac changes, though Foop’s birth has put him in line to take over from his parents before members of the camarilla.

If his parents had died the day he was born, Foop would legally be next in line as High Count of the Anti-Fairies; however, he would not have much political power. In this case, the First General would legally oversee the Anti-Fairies, but would step down the day Foop became an adult anti-fairy (150,000 years). At that point, Foop would rule (with the First General having a sizable amount of political power) until Foop selects his High Countess. Once the High Count and Countess positions were both filled, the First General would officially return the political power to the hands of the High Count and Countess, and the new pair would rule Anti-Fairy society together.

Anti-Fairy society is tied closely to the Fae zodiac, so their people were very upset when it was revealed that time had been frozen for fifty years by Timmy’s secret wish. Until the reveal, all babies born during those fifty years were thought to belong to the year of Leaves. Following the reveal, parents had to backtrack to calculate what year their children were actually born. Calculating Foop’s birth year became a huge political debate since it affects so much of his life, from how he is treated in special social settings to which chairs he is allowed to sit in to who his options are for his half of the camarilla one day.

Many of these faces are seen during Frayed Knots. Anti-Cosmo selects his choices during the chapter “Reign Fall” and Anti-Wanda selects hers in “The Falcon to Her Swallow.” Foop and several camarilla court members are the subject of the final chapter of the 130 Prompts project, “Reflection.”
