for all the years that he’d known him, cheng xiaoshi had heard people call lu guang hard to read. he hadn’t thought so. stoic, maybe, stubborn, yes, but he was also earnest, straightforward. when he needed help, when he needed companionship, lu guang was always the first person to come to mind. he was the first person in his head come morning, the last person to see before he fell asleep. he thought he knew him better ; knew that he’d favour forget-me-nots in their stationary over every other flower, how prone he was to feeding the stray cats that passed by, knew the condescending smile hidden at the corner of his lips when cheng xiaoshi lost an argument, or the way, his touch came scarcely, but unbidden, always welcomed, and always at the perfect moment. it was as if he always knew when cheng xiaoshi needed it the most. he'd thought those soft, longing gazes had been mutual. maybe lu guang was harder to read than he’d thought. “ … right. ” cheng xiaoshi hadn’t even gotten the words out. even now, on a hesitant breath, lu guang seemed to know what he was about to say, his bleeding heart breaking and spilling onto the floor between them, a confession choked halfway up his throat. that expression upon lu guang’s face, one of … dread. “ no, that’s okay. i … had a lapse in judgement. you’re always complaining about how impulsive i am. ” he turned away for a second, ignoring the burn behind his eyes and sniffing, coughing awkwardly to cover up such a pathetic noise. his ears burned, his throat burned, his chest ached. “ ‘m gonna go for a little walk, okay ? ” he said, rising in an attempt to cut off any protest, jacket slung over the nearest chair tossed over broad shoulder. he made the mistake of catching lu guang’s expression with his foot halfway out the door, ignoring the way his ribs were about to collapse in on that breaking heart as he forced the muscles of his face into a smile. it would have been convincing to anyone. except him. except lu guang. hardly fair, to know me better than i could ever know you.
@ lu guang :)
Lu Guang feels it so viscerally that he has to temper his expression to remain calm, the violent tremors that shoot across every red thread he has already drawn taut. It is the only way to handle the indisputable hurt that darkens Cheng Xiaoshi’s expression. What he would relinquish, what he would irrevocably change, if only he could circumvent this outcome. It seems like a callous response, reminding him that they were friends first, that as much as their companionship meant to him it would never extend beyond that. It’s cruel, cruel to both of them, because the sentiment wedges itself between his ribs and twists in fervent retribution. He can endure this because he has to, because this isn’t the first prelude to deviate from the predictable he has become so familiar with. It isn’t fair to ask Cheng Xiaoshi to accept that every stolen glance, every discreet smile, was not what he surmised it was. It is the reason he feels his muscles keen, his fingers shift uncomfortably, wanting nothing more than to reach towards him as he recoils from that blatant rejection. It isn’t fair but fate is fickle, it does not consider those ensnared in its inextricable threads before casting them off the precipitous edge and into the cavernous abyss. How was it that no matter how desperately he grasped at them, no matter how committed he was to finding an opportunity to save him, Lu Guang would invariably bring suffering with him when he entered Cheng Xiaoshi’s life. He knows that expression, has witnessed him conceal pain enough to recognize the way it subtly furrows his brows, his mouth urged to tension as to not quiver pitifully. Each breath is laborious, excruciating, because Lu Guang is resisting urgently, helplessness carving a hollow with the repetitive mourning of his heart. He had spent so long dedicated to his longing that there’s nothing else it could be mistaken for and even if he strove to conceal it his gaze was astute and in foolish, reckless vulnerability he had almost let those slithers of red slip between his fingers. “ cheng xiaoshi.” his tone is no longer reliable, was it his dejected expression, the way he desperately tried to refute that he was sniffling or his eyes brimming with miserable tears. The way he rises is too abrupt, snagging his jacket off the back of the chair and draping it over his shoulders, catching his gaze for but a moment before steeling himself, as if he wanted to extricate him from the burden of seeing him fall apart. He can’t do it, he can’t do it and it’s the worst conceivable outcome, because he knows how this ends, he’s written this into the timeline before, he’s rising from his seat before he can properly articulate anything let alone wrestle compliance from his thoughts. “ wait.” his gait conveys all of his urgency, flickers of anguish ghost across his expression, as if their pain was a shared thing and after so long, so many times, so many untimely deaths, it more than likely was. He reaches to curl a vice around his wrist but misses, instead, seizing the end of his sleeve and quietly imploring him to not leave, not yet, he wasn’t ready, how could he ever be ready. “ I said wait.” Lu Guang aims for firmness but feels himself falter, he needs to convince him, or himself, that this is a terrible decision, that there was never any other decision he would be willing to make. “ i’m coming with you.” he wanted to ask, to separate the desperation that strummed erratically to the cadence of his heart from his request but they came out carelessly. “ it’s late.” he’s careful now, steadying his breathing, grounding himself in the present because being immured in the past or bound by the future isn’t salvaging any of what remains for them in this present moment. “ so, take me with you.” and it’s said softer this time, with less resolve, more like a question than a demand.

Videoleap
With the use of cutting-edge computer vision and artificial intelligence technology, Lightricks creates cutting-edge photo and video creation tools that let companies and content providers create scalable, highly engaging content. Using the pgvector extension in Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL, Lightricks was able to improve search capabilities and increase the number of retrieval rates by 40% for its robust video editor, Videoleap.
Google Cloud goal at Lightricks is to close the gap that exists between creation and imagination. With their video editing tool, Videoleap, both novices and experts can easily chop and combine movies no matter where they are.
With the use of AI algorithms, user-generated content (UGC) templates, and a simple editor, Google hope to make video editing accessible to everyone. Specifically, Videoleap’s template search feature is essential to their users’ ability to effectively browse this extensive and varied library of video templates. Google wanted a way to go towards a more dynamic search approach while still improving search. Google is realised that Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL was the best option for Videoleap when it revealed support for vector searches.
Seeking a solution that is superior to others
Google is already using Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL as their managed relational database before looking into vector database solutions. As a result, they were able to concentrate on improving their apps and spend less time managing the databases. However, in order to stay up with the expanding trends in video editing, Google required more support for Videoleap’s search features. Google’s goal was to enable consumers to select templates that rapidly matched their creative vision and to have more control over their browsing experience.
For a while, users had to utilize precise terms to retrieve relevant results from Google’s platform’s search feature, which depended on exact keyword matching based on predetermined annotations. This limited user flexibility. This method frequently fell short of capturing the wide range of user questions, which may contain intricate expressions or terminology that isn’t explicitly included in their annotations.
Since it would have taken a lot of time to resolve each of these differences on its own, Google chose to investigate the possibilities of vector search, which uses vector embeddings to extract pertinent data from databases. It didn’t take long for us to realise that adding this technique to Videoleap will improve search quality and speed while producing more context-aware results.
In order to meet Google objectives for search functionality, we looked at a few options. Pinecone and Vespa were Google’s first attempts, but their delayed integration and increased complexity made them unsatisfactory. Development overhead is greatly increased when a second vector database is introduced since it necessitates modifications to deployment procedures, pipelines for continuous integration, and local environments.
In addition, the learning curve for developers is higher than for pgvector, the well-known PostgreSQL extension for vector search, mostly because it requires them to comprehend a new data type. It can be difficult and error-prone to maintain data consistency between PostgreSQL and an external vector database, necessitating careful management of continuous data synchronization. It can also be difficult to take advantage of PostgreSQL’s transactional features for atomic updates across relational and vector data. The division of systems could potentially impede effective joins between vector data and other PostgreSQL tables.
Chroma Vector DB
Google also gave Chroma DB some thought, however it didn’t have any dependable hosting choices or deployment alternatives. Google therefore knew it was the appropriate decision when Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL introduced vector support via pgvector. It not only matched their requirements exactly, but it also worked seamlessly with the PostgreSQL architecture Google already had. For many use scenarios, its streamlined approach makes it a more dependable and efficient solution by lowering development overhead and minimizing the chance of data inconsistencies.
Using pgvector in conjunction with Cloud SQL to increase functionality
Google can effortlessly combine data, manage transactions, and enable semantic search by utilizing pgvector with Cloud SQL. Through the use of various indexing schemes for variables like speed and accuracy, Google may adjust and customize it to their specifications.
A microservices architecture is used in the application Google developed for Videoleap’s search function. It stores Cloud SQL with multiple embeddings of the templates and UGC template metadata to allow search while maintaining high availability and scalability. This method improves the modularity, flexibility, and scalability of the system while adhering to the concepts of microservices.Image credit to Google cloud
Faster results visualization with dynamic search features
Delivering relevant results for a wide range of queries was revolutionized by switching to a semantic search paradigm with vector embeddings. Rather than depending only on precise term matching, this modification was especially helpful for capturing the semantic intent of search queries. Because of this flexibility, Google can still get pertinent answers even if the query contains variations like synonyms, misspellings, or similar concepts. Instead of being constrained by the exact words used, a search for “labrador plays with frisbee” may now, for instance, yield a video of a golden retriever playing with a ball.
With the new method, Google observed a notable rise in export rates, suggesting that the modification to their search functionality undoubtedly added value for producers. Both the quantity of retrievals and the percentage of templates used from recovered results rose by 40% while using pgvector. The pgvector addition allowed us to query millions of embeddings with great precision and added support for the Hierarchical Navigable Small Worlds (HNSW) algorithm. 90% of Google’s inquiries (P90) had response times ranging from one to four seconds, but they now took less than 100 milliseconds. By enabling users to quickly find pertinent results, this unleashes the creative process and makes editing as gratifying as the original production.Image credit to Google cloud. Hierarchical Navigable Small Worlds (HNSW) support enables high-accuracy querying of millions of embeddings. Response times (p90) plummeted from 1-4 seconds to under 100 milliseconds.
Using AI to bring search possibilities into greater focus
The addition of a visual content-based search capability is a key component of Google’s improved search capabilities. Neural networks can be used to generate vector embeddings with pgvector and Cloud SQL. As a result, they can now comprehend and match visual content with user intent with more accuracy and relevance, leading to more relevant search results.
Being aware of the emerging trend of AI-assisted editing, in which compositions are frequently based on textual cues, requires being up to date with the latest developments in video editing tools. For this reason, Google have a new Videoleap search function that uses AI suggestions to help content creators identify visual content that fits with more precise or subtle topics. One way to distinguish content would be to look for references to the Barbie movie vs images of generic Barbie doll models.

How could Cheng Xiaoshi know, when Lu Guang endeavored so tirelessly to keep it concealed, that he had never been the light to begin with. He was mistaken in that belief, even if it were derived from personal experience, he could say this with certainty because he has skirted the purgatory of past and present so many times, hopeless — doomed to repeat the same mistakes and reach the same conclusion. Amongst that stygian sea, where the voracious tide threatened to drown him so often it felt familiar, there had only ever been one source of light, one speck of illumination that compelled him to rise even when weighed down by the burden of life and death in an incessant loop. It’s unfair, it was never fair to begin with, since their first meeting, a node that had irrevocably changed his life and continued to over and over, fate has never gazed upon them with even a modicum of mercy. Lu guang knows punishment will befall him eventually, that he has brazenly violated his own rules in this selfish act of longing. That is why he cherishes these moments, a rarity where both reach across that insignificant distance and breach the chasm that has been only growing since the first time Lu Guang had lost him. Of course they’re open, yet he cannot bring himself to reprimand him for it, not when his voice shifts into a timbre that belies the churning emotions he too keeps close and guarded. As if this precious bond the two of them had nurtured, the very thing he sought to protect, might fracture if either dared to become too audacious. So, he closes his eyes, concentrates on the way his breath disturbs the whorls of white curling against his nape, envisioning his heartbeat as it steadies to match his. And when he asks that, softly, as if he ever needed permission in the first place, something within him lurches, it’s painful, a dull, insistent ache that reminds him of the danger. Sometimes, when the burden felt so immense he felt himself slipping, he wanted to tell him, despite how his only true wish was to spare him from those eventualities, for the isolation he deliberately chose became oppressive when he allowed his mind to wander. “ Idiot, you don’t have to ask.” he says breathlessly, blaming the exhaustion that persistently tugged at him, because the alternative was a double-edged blade.
Then, unexpectedly, he continues to speak, filling the apertures with the reluctant confession of someone who was beset by those memories. Dreams that transpose into nightmares, virulent claws of malevolence carving him open as he writhes, bleeding and sobbing, feeling nothing but the imminent agony and then an eclipsing darkness. It isn’t him who is dying — it’s never him, that would be too lenient. Lu Guang glances down at his hands and they are Cheng Xiaoshi’s hands, the lithe fingers and prominent knuckles he remembers with startling clarity, the wound will be fatal, there was no recourse he could take to alter that conclusion. When he was jerked awake, his chest seizing and his breath coming in heaved gasps, Lu Guang had to act with haste, to quiet himself, clamping a hand over his mouth because a plaintive whimper might jostle Cheng Xiaoshi awake. He didn’t want to bother him, not when he slept with an expression verging on tranquility. Gingerly, he allows his fingers to reach for his partner’s, the tactile sensation of them beneath him was almost as excruciating as the gaping wounds, the lethal gunshot, the wrenching of a blade in his gut. “ …I know that dream.” foreboding prickles along his keen senses, the sharp, intermittent bursts of knowing he’s giving away too much but also so little at the same time. “ I’ve had similar ones, the ending doesn’t change.” he spares him the details, the smears of blood, the gurgling death-rattles of Cheng Xiaoshi curled close to his chest, dying, dying, always dying. It isn’t the only iteration of that dream, it evolves volatile in nature, picking at Lu Guang’s most vulnerable spots, newly discovered or long since recognized and playing them repetitively until sometimes reality and nightmare merged into something terrifying. “ even if they feel real, that’s all they are, dreams.” he allows it, laying the warmth of his hand over Cheng Xiaoshi’s and holding it, gently, cautiously, like either of them might break beneath that transgression. It is then almost strange, the absent way his thumb caresses the rise of his knuckles, traces the dips of skin between them, reverently, because he has sinned like this before, in the past. He cannot dispel the sense that he has failed somehow, touching when he should not touch, speaking when he should not utter a word, conveying too much when silence was the more auspicious option. “ stay.” an invitation — an urgent request ? it was hard to say when his timbre was a rasp of sleep and the warmth that kindled between the two of them felt molten. “ As long as you want, as long as you need.” then he adds, if only to alleviate the visceral dread that iced his veins, a premonition of a confession long since declared and a love that was destined to wither into dust. “ Just don’t hog the blanket.”
“ they’re open. ” he acquiesced, more meaning in those words than he could ever hope to convey. lu guang was the first thing he saw once he woke, the last thing on his mind before he slept. in a reality so fraught with horrid unknowns, and paths that so often led into a spiralling abyss, to have a guiding light like lu guang had transcended dives, had moved past each mission. what misfortunes would have befallen him had he not recognised the sure cadence of lu guang’s voice ? weaved the strings of fate in his favour, and led him back once more ? in any time, and any place, if he could not hear that gentle exhale, indulge in the barely there breath of amusement before his partner smiled, then this was not his reality. he’d reject it every time. “ let me watch a little longer. ” cheng xiaoshi breathed, sleepy, gentle stardust coating each word with the whispers of slumber. maybe he was drowsier than he had anticipated, but really who was to blame for that ? lu guang, with snowy hair and eyes in frame a chilly blue, was less tundra in these moments, and more the photo flare from the sun, like a guiding star. he was a tether, and it put his mind at ease to be near him.
an attempt to talk about lu guang’s troubles dissuaded. that wasn’t surprising. but he couldn’t help grasping like straws at attempts to hear his voice, even if it did keep the both of them awake longer. part of him lamented the idea of needing, wanted to be comforted over something as benign as a nightmare. weren’t they just that ? products of too many late night shows or sketchy internet articles. in the end, cheng xiaoshi was reluctant to admit the true source of these machinations ; that altering the past would result in a storm they couldn’t whether together. and so, despite trying to keep the mood safe, light, the thoughts tumble from his lips regardless, in clumsy confessions to his spine. “ i dreamt that you weren’t there when i came back. ” with it, the hold on lu guang’s form tightened, just that little bit, grounding, fearing that any second now he wouldn’t wake in the midst of another nightmare, that this wasn’t just some sweet delusion where both were safe and unharmed. once the words were out, it was hard for them to stop. “ it was like we had never met, but i could still remember you there like … ” a short careful breath, hesitant about further wrecking this peaceful night, but unable to stop himself. “ … like a part of me was missing. ”
he feared the uncanny nature of a life with lu guang in it, how to the undiscerning eye of the people in that dream, not much had changed but cheng xiaoshi’s life was irrevocably altered. he could still remember feeling his stomach drop, mid dive, unable to hear the sound of lu guang’s voice anymore, sweat beading, a cold chill down his own spine. contrast now to the other’s even breaths, the warmth of his skin, this comforting familiar scent. what he would give to stay here in this moment together, following the wisps at lu guang’s nape, watching dust through the sky light lit up by the moon. desperately he wanted to know what lu guang was thinking, leaning back ever so slightly, head partially sunk into his own pillow. it had been a minute movement, and yet he yearned again for that tiny touch of skin on skin. cheng xiaoshi’s hand curled in on itself, a pathetic attempt to risk temptation ( he would fail, as he always would when it came to lu guang. ) “ so just … let me stay here a little longer. ” in this moment, in his space. where it has always been safe and warm. where i have always been at home.

Stiletto, coffin, ballerina and more! If you’ve ever found yourself staring at your nails, wondering which nail shape would be best for you—torn between trying a new style or sticking to your usual go-to, you’re not alone. With so many options to choose from, it can be tough to know which nail shape will best flatter your hands. Before you book your next salon appointment or dive into your at-home manicure kit, we’ve put together three ultimate guide to help you pick the best nail shape for your hand type. Identifying Your Hand Shape It’s important to identify and appreciate your hand/finger type in order to know which nail shape best complements you. So first things first, take a moment to examine your hands—they likely fall into one of these categories: Short and Wide: Broad palms and shorter fingers, giving a balanced, sturdy look. Long and Slender: Narrow palms and slim fingers, exuding a naturally graceful appearance. Oval: Tapered fingers and a softly rounded palm, offering a subtle elegance. Large: Broad palms and wider fingers, providing a strong, confident appearance. Small: Petite hands with delicate fingers and a narrow palm, often exuding a dainty charm. Square: Broad, evenly proportioned palms with straight fingers, creating a symmetrical and balanced look. Photo: @naillologist/Instagram Before we fully dive into understanding the different major nail shapes available, you may want to see how these shapes would look on your fingers. Modern technology tools like Facetune’s virtual nails try-on feature can help you do just that. Think of it as a fitting room for your manicure! Powered by AI from Lightricks, this tool lets you preview various nail styles in real-time, making it simple to discover the perfect shape and color for your hands. Here Are The Different Types of Nail Shapes Photo: @nail_sunhee/Instagram Now, let’s dive into the world of nail shapes. The right shape can elevate your hands from “well-groomed” to downright elegant, edgy, or effortlessly chic, transforming your entire look with just a few subtle adjustments. Whether you prefer the timeless sophistication of a square, the sultry curve of an almond shape, or the bold statement of stiletto nails, each shape has the power to reflect your personal style and mood. Not only can the perfect nail shape complement your outfit and enhance your overall appearance, but it can also give the illusion of more graceful fingers, or add a modern twist to a classic manicure. Ultimately, choosing the right nail shape is a simple yet transformative way to make your hands stand out in the most stylish way possible. #1. Square Photo: @by_hannahtaylor/Instagram If you’re a fan of the “clean girl” aesthetic, square nails are your perfect match. With their crisp lines and structured finish, defined by flat, squared-off tips, they embody the same chic, modern vibe as slicked-back hair and dewy skin—effortlessly sophisticated and timeless. But it’s not just about looks. Square nails are also refreshingly practical, as their shape makes them less prone to snags compared to more pointed styles. So, whether you’re tapping away on your laptop, scrolling through your phone, or indulging in a Sunday reset, this shape holds up beautifully. #2. Almond Photo: @pressed.byp/Instagram Almond nails are the epitome of soft glam and everyday luxury. With their tapered sides and gently rounded tips, they create a refined, sleek look that naturally enhances the elegance of your fingers. Unlike sharper, more dramatic shapes, almond nails strike the perfect balance—they’re long enough to feel glamorous yet short enough to seamlessly fit into your daily routine. No need to worry about struggling to unclip your jewelry or open a can—this shape offers a stylish, effortless manicure that exudes sophistication and suits any occasion. #3. Round Photo: @blush.studio1/Instagram If you prefer a no-fuss, low-maintenance manicure, round nails are the way to go. Their short, curved shape follows the natural line of your fingertips, giving them a polished yet understated look that requires minimal upkeep. Beyond their simplicity, round nails are also one of the best shapes for preventing breakage. Their smooth edges won’t catch on things like your favorite sweater or a rogue zipper, making them a practical choice that holds up beautifully through daily wear and tear. #4. Oval Photo: @iramshelton/Instagram If round nails had a classy older sister, it would be the oval shape. Soft, feminine, and universally flattering, oval nails also follow the natural curve of the fingertip but extend slightly longer, tapering into a rounded tip. Oval nails strike the perfect balance if you want an elegant shape without going over the top. The smooth, curved edges make them less prone to snagging or breaking compared to sharper styles like coffin or stiletto nails. This durability, combined with their timeless appeal, makes them a stylish yet practical choice that complements any look. #5. Stiletto Photo: @drilledbylo/Instagram If your nails had an alter ego, stiletto nails would be the high-fashion, take-no-prisoners version. This shape is long, sharply tapered, and ends in a dramatic point—just like the sleek, sky-high heels they’re named after. Designed to stand out, they add instant edge and glamour to any look. Are they practical? Not really. But if you’re after a statement look, there’s nothing quite like them. Since achieving this extreme shape requires length and structure, most stiletto nails are done with acrylics or extensions. They take commitment, but if you’re up for the challenge, the payoff is a bold, head-turning manicure that commands attention. #6. Coffin Photo: @nailzzbysteph/Instagram Coffin nails (or ballerina nails, depending on how dramatic you want to sound) are the slightly more functional cousin of stiletto nails. They still feature length, but instead of tapering to a sharp point, the tips are squared off, giving them a sleek, edgy vibe without the extreme point. Since this style requires a certain level of structure to maintain its sharp, crisp edges, it works best with acrylics or extensions. While not as dramatic as stiletto nails, coffin nails still make a bold statement and offer a touch of sophistication with just the right amount of flair. Choosing the Best Nail Shape for Your Hand Type With the most popular nail shapes in mind, it’s time to choose the one that best compliments your hand type: #1. Short, Wider Hands If your hands are on the shorter, wider side, think of nail shapes as a little bit of visual magic. Almond, oval, or coffin nails are great options because their tapered, elongated form creates the illusion of length and slenderness, giving your hands a more refined, elongated look. #2. Long, Slender Hands If your fingers already have natural length, your goal might not be elongation but balance. In this case, round, almond, and square shapes work beautifully to complement your proportions. A round nail, in particular, creates a soft, smooth look that enhances the elegance of long fingers. On the other hand, square nails add a touch of structure and definition, providing long fingers with a more polished, well-proportioned appearance. These shapes work in harmony with your natural length, giving your hands a balanced, refined aesthetic. #3. Larger Hands Photo: Designecologist/Pexels For those with larger hands and broader fingers, oval nails provide a flattering look. The gentle curve of the oval shape helps soften the natural width of the fingers, enhancing their proportions and creating a more balanced appearance. This shape adds an elegant, elongated look without being overly dramatic, making it a great option for achieving a refined and well-proportioned manicure. #4. Oval Hands with Tapered Fingers Almond nails are a perfect match for naturally oval hands with slender, gradually narrowing fingers. This shape gently lengthens the appearance of the fingers, adding elegance without overpowering the natural lines of your hands. The soft taper and rounded tips complement the fluidity of oval hands, creating a balanced and refined look that enhances your hand’s natural beauty. #5. Smaller Hands Petite hands tend to have a delicate look, and the right nail shape can highlight that even more. Round and almond-shaped nails work beautifully for smaller hands because they complement their natural shape without feeling too overpowering. #6. Square Hands If your hands have strong, angular lines with a more square shape, more delicate nail styles like almond, round, or oval can create a nice contrast. These shapes soften the natural angles of your fingers, adding a touch of elegance and balance. Final Thoughts At the end of the day, the best nail shape is the one that makes you feel confident and polished. There’s no right or wrong answer here—it’s all about what works for you! If you’re still unsure, don’t hesitate to experiment. Try different shapes, play around with lengths, and see what feels best. After all, nails grow back, so why not have a little fun with your next manicure? What’s your go-to nail shape? Let us know in the comments—we’d love to hear what works for you! ㅤㅤㅤ𝒐𝒇 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝒅𝒂𝒏 𝒉𝒆𝒏𝒈 had experienced, the revelations aboard the luofu had perhaps, been the greatest of all. memories he had long ignored, haunting eyes he had run from too often, all came crashing back in unending azure waves, drowning him beneath dan feng's wretched claws and pulling him back up for just enough air to submerge him again. none of the information had really been... particularly new. all he had experienced, all the pain and yearning had been felt beneath ren's bloodied hands before in the mara-heated murmurs of 'dan feng,' and his own defense mechanisms of letting the high elder take him, so to speak. but now - dan heng had been faced with the wrecked realization that perhaps, he should feel the weight of these sins - the weight of all of ren's pain, madness, and despair. the weight of jing yuan's loneliness, bailu's shackled powers... unfortunately, he was not quite equipped to process this, so while the nameless reveled in penacony - dan heng stayed.
ㅤㅤㅤhe let the lunae form hang free, too tired to muster the will to shift back, and the self flagellation of his draconic traits was a lovely reminder anyway. between eating and occasionally dozing off, his phone would ping - and while he was slow to respond to everyone else, ren would still get instant answers - even if they were one worded, lacking his usual sarcasm or wit. he didn't really expect ren, of all people, to pick up on how morose he was feeling - how deep he was in his own thoughts, but it stood to reason that perhaps, the stellaron hunter knew him better than anyone else.
ㅤㅤㅤhe occupied his days in a nest of heavy blankets, archives dimmed to blackness and his tablet propped before him - alternating between dramas ( not romance, never romance ), documentaries, ipc broadcasts, and stimulation videos used for animals kept inside a bit too long. they occupied some innate predatory part of his brain enough that he was able to stop thinking for just a moment - so distracting in fact that he did not realize someone had entered the parlor - and could only assume that perhaps the person sifting around in his room was pom-pom, leaving him a glass of water or a treat as they'd been doing on occasion. as such - he did not even move, tail barely twitching - until...
ㅤㅤㅤas the blanket raises - a familiar scent fills his nostrils, and then a pair of bright, carmine eyes. dan heng's own jade pools widen in clear surprise, and he cannot resist the way his tail lashes back and forth, a clear sign of his sudden... jubilance. ❝ ren? ❞ he questions, more rhetorical than anything. his voice is hoarse - a bit painful from disuse, and he thinks to perhaps tumble the blanket away - make himself a bit more presentable instead of this messy haired, sleepy eyed draconic lump that has invaded dan heng's flesh, but... his tail makes the decisions for him, coiling about the stellaron hunter's weight and gently pulling him beneath the large blanket, until the poor disvatta is immersed in the tablet lit haven with him. dan heng blinks, surprised by his own actions, before pausing the video that was becoming distracting again very quickly ( fish darting around on the screen, it made him want to go swimming and- ). he clears his throat, unwinding the appendage and letting it flop to the side. ❝ what are you doing here? is there something you need? ❞ he straightens slightly, searching the hunter's gaze for any sign of the mara - finding none, he relaxes a bit, and can only hope ren can't see the sudden flush adorning the tips of his ears.
there was a period of clarity between the moment he’d met with death’s sweet embrace, and the encroaching threat of the next mara spike. jingliu, for all her cruelty, granted him this at the very least, as a lasting favour to an old friend. death is a kind thing, a painless thing, with a promise to grant him the eternal rest he had so long been craving. it was the dying which was monstrous and unmerciful, especially now that he had been edged on the precipice of that sweet relief for far longer than any disvatta had any right to. this time felt like a sort of … compensation ; were it not for the lingering phantom pain of jingliu’s sword he might consider it the closest thing to peace ren could experience.
or, it could be.
he would be the last to deny that what he and dan heng shared was a tumultuous dynamic, an attempt to build something on a crumbling foundation. despite it, and his attempts to keep a distance, the mara would ultimately bring him back to the echo of yingxing’s desires. how miserable it was, to experience this grief twofold ; through yingxing’s eyes, and then his own, a stranger in his own body. he wondered then, when he had started to seek out dan heng without the grip of mara tugging on his leash like some reluctant dog. when, then, had he started to see in between the lines of the vidyadhara’s seemingly uniform texting. the hunter was not adept in the ways of reading emotions, but dan heng, as always, had proved the exception.
it's the first time he’s been aboard the express without breaking in. he’d had an invitation … sort of. dan heng would have noticed him sooner if he was ‘guarding’ the express like he said he would. instead, upon entering the parlour car he was met with very little resistance, the darkened archives was no different. the shapeless lump that was dan heng beneath the covers would have been unassuming, if not for the lifeless tail slipping out of the saddened heap. he made a point not to conceal the noise of him closing the door, putting the shard sword against the wall, and ridding himself of his shoes. only then did ren kneel by the draconic lump and try to pinch the blanket, raising it to peer inside.

#5. Round and almond-shaped nails work beautifully for smaller hands because they complement their natural shape without feeling too overpowering. #6.
