Master and Apprentice introduces or converses with a ton of delightful little Easter eggs for other material, which I'm sure I'm not even getting 25% of, but I think my favorite thing that it introduces is the notion that Qui-Gon kept Obi-Wan drilling in basic forms without specializing in one for longer than usual among his peers specifically so that he would be able to master any of the forms later on with minimal difficulty. Or, you know, maybe completely switch up his preferred form into its polar opposite on a trauma-induced whim well into his twenties and become so good at the new choice that he is regarded as its foremost master. Just. You know. Hypothetically.

Anakin Thinks your Saber Form Sucks, Nothing Personal (drabble)
This was a side tangent written as a companion piece to this ask about sparring with anakin (nsfw)
What I'm imagining, given his arrogance, is he has a very delicate sort of hierarchy system to navigate, especially in the aotc era when it's been known that he's in a student position and should be seeking out opportunities to get stronger.
He likes the thrill of winning, so he's not above sparring younger padawans, or less experienced swordsmen, he thinks of it as a moment to teach them what he knows. However, (and this isn't canon at all) I feel like he'd never spar with anyone who hasn't graduated from Shii-Cho to other saber forms, even if it's their plan to master it like Master Kit Fisto, he has an unconscious (semi-conscious?) bias against it. Which, don't get me wrong he absolutely respects it as a sturdy foundational form, he just won't spar with someone if he's already decided in his head that it wouldn't be a fair fight, because he's just that arrogant.
I'd go as far to say that on certain occasions he's voiced that "you shouldn't even be allowed to keep fighting Shii-Cho, it should be mandatory to learn other saber forms" and the clones (because he'd never say that in front of other jedi) just look at him like... yeah ok whatever that means. He's canonically expressed issue with the way padawans are trained in combat, he thinks it's too easy and doesn't set them up to be as strong as they could be, so I feel like he'd see people sticking with Shii-Cho as another reason to criticize the padawan training regiment as "failing to inspire excellence."

I recently found out a large amount of people seem to consider Lightsaber Forms to be silly additions and honestly I don't get it?
It only makes sense for a wide discipline like lightsaber combat to have different styles. Martial arts are much the same, you have your striking disciplines, your grappling disciplines, and within them their own differences. Tae-Kwon Do for an example I'm familiar for takes a lot of inspiration from other martial arts (eg, constantly moving footwork like boxing for explosiveness) to make a well-rounded discipline. That's not unlike Niman!
It was getting pretty flame-war-y so I didn't interact with them to see where they're coming from, but it was weird to see people in agreement with bashing and mocking a bit of worldbuilding I just saw as logical

Which of these legends do you believe will emerge victorious in a lightsaber duel, at their peak and at the height of their power?
Obi-Wan Kenobi: The Master of Soresu?
Or Exar Kun: Dark Lord of the Sith?

LIGHTSABER COMBAT - FORM III: Soresu
AKA The Resilience Form or The Way of the Mynock.
Tumblr media
“A… defensive technique. But effective. Use it if you do not wish to be hit, or if you are facing many opponents with blasters.”
Tumblr media
As blasters became more popular and lightsaber duels became less frequent, Form III was devised as the ultimate defense. Blade closer to the body, tighter moves, quick reflexes and fast footwork to completely evade barrage of shots, great Soresu practitioner were said to be undefeated because they were practically untouchable.
Tumblr media
Form III is the form of the Observation: within the eye of the storm, the longer the fight takes, the more the user can analyze his surrounds, finding his opponents’ weaknesses or maybe using the time to reason with them. Therefore, it is also considered to be the expression of Jedi philosophy.
Tumblr media
Like the Mynocks that can drain energy from starships, the goal is, ultimately, to tire your opponent until he can no longer fight or frustrate him until he becomes sloppy and careless for a take down strike.
Tumblr media
Those who rush against a Soresu practitioner often get countered effectively and definitively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Positive Aspects: the tight energy-efficient movements are decisive in many long battles. True Soresu Masters become so powerful they don’t need to ignite their lightsabers to win a battle, just dodging and working through their opponents’ routines to crush them.
Tumblr media
Negative Aspects: Form III demands quite a long training on its mastery. Its user must be battle-ready to defend at the first sign of trouble but calm and serene to not lose focus on the stand-off, which might take its user decades to achieve such a condition. Luminara Unduli once said: “The road is long, but it is worth the journey, for a true master of Form Three is invincible”.
Tumblr media
Also, a focused and cautious opponent is the Form III’s greatest challenge - an “irresistible power against an unmovable object” kind of scenario, until one of them gives in.

Obi-Wan was kinda weak in episode 3 with lightsaber combat against vader, but in this ep he was suddenly really good with his lightsaber. this is because his form of lightsaber combat, form 3 ‘Soresu’, is a form that is more defensive and even at a base level, highly effective at deflecting blaster fire. And Obi-Wan was the soresu master, the best at his form of lightsaber combat, so even though he is 10 years rusty, he is still good with soresu and deflecting the blaster fire. fun fact, soresu is usually not the best form for lightsaber on lightsaber combat so his skills in lightsaber combat were even more impressive when he was still in his prime. the stance he takes at the end of deflecting blaster fire is the stance of form 4 ‘ataru’ (I think). form 4 was his initial form (seen in the phantom menace) so that means his brain reverted all the way back to the roots of his muscle memory. (also speaking of TPM, it is likely that since he saw qui-gon die after not being enough of a defensive fighter, he chose to learn the more defensive soresu form.). it was great to see Obi-Wan using his lightsaber again though. I loved the parallels of Obi-Wan turning off his lightsaber to hide and take out stormtroopers and ahsoka doing the same thing in the mandalorian. like grandmaster like grand padawan. and someone pointed out that he might have been desperately hoping that he didn’t find ahsoka in the tombs of jedi. also I find it interesting that Obi-Wan used the darkness to hide and then used the light to take out his enemies. also bruh, the parallel between obi wan and vader in the bacta tanks is crazy. it really emphasized how close they were and how they are still similar, but it also highlighted their differences and how much they have changed. also Obi-Wan skipping out on bacta and not caring for himself is now canon instead of just fanon.

Mine is Niman. Jack of all trades, the most creative and best to be individualize in my eyes. Also, every form that allows me to add two dozen weapons mounted on vembraces to the fight is great in my books.

I’ve realised recently that lightsaber combat looks heavier & slower, like in the prequels it looked fast & precise, vs now it looks like the blades are physically heavier even tho they don’t weigh anything.
