Jedi form lightsaber salutes are so fucking dope: every time Obi-Wan does that Soresu two fingered thing perpendicular blade move it looks so cool that I want to scream. You can totally understand why Dooku was still doing that up-then-swoosh Makashi salute even though Sidious must have internally died every time he watched his cringefail “Sith” apprentice show off in specifically Jedi fashion.

Total Star Wars/d&d brainrot geekery, but I’ve been thinking about ways to build Jedi in various gaming systems and how to best emulate the lightsaber fighting styles in Star Wars with d&d type mechanics. I think Pathfinder’s Path of War (or its predecessor, Tomb of Battle) Disciplines are fantastic at capturing both the various form’s themes and their awesome mechanics for mystical martial arts.
Long Pathfinder/Star Wars brain-rot word vomit below…
Shi Cho: The first and for most of the Jedi Order’s history, only lightsaber style, this form emphasizes the Jedi’s signature weapon and unique abilities turning mundane fighting style mystical. It sticks to basic strikes and parries but augments them with mystical martial prowess for wide, sweeping attacks characteristic of the form. Best is probably...
Sleeping Goddess: With several maneuvers to enhance a lightsaber mind blade, others capable of being augmented by the Force power points, a focus on mental powers, ideals and an associated skill of autohypnosis (quasi-meditation) this discipline is most fitting for Shi Cho. All it needs is more maneuvers focused on hitting multiple targets.
Sith Variant: Veiled Moon makes a good dark counterpart. The mechanics are somewhat similar in movement and single-target strikes but Veiled Moon focuses on tapping into the power of the shadow realm, not ideals, and evading Sleeping Goddess’s sight with stealth – a perfect assassin counter-Discipline!
Makashi: As Sith clashed against Jedi in open combat, both Orders needed new forms. Here we see the incorporation of mundane blade-to-blade combat forms adjusted for the strange and supernatural Light-blades of both Orders. With a focus on efficiency, control and grace in both its strikes and footwork, Makashi is the ultimate duelist’s form. And there’s a couple good disciplines fitting to represent it…
Mithral Current: This form is definitely the Jedi variant because it puts heavy focus on the act of sheathing one’s blade – and drawing it lightning-fast against any fool who strikes first. It’s associated skill is Perform (Dance) so it’s also literally lightsaber ballet as @charmwasjess described! Given the name, it also emphasizes the ‘goodly’ silver element
Sith Variant: Probably Scarlet Throne, which has more rulership themes and focuses more on heavy damage. It’s conflict resolution is ‘the conflict is resolved when the foe is dead’. It’s associated skill ‘Sense Motive’ is also perfect for an Order where members are just as likely to duel each other as they are a Jedi.
Soresu: With the proliferation of blasters, lightsaber wielders turned their iconic weapons to shields. The resulting form focuses so heavily on blocking and defense that it almost completely forgoes attacks. Most damage from the Soresu form comes from the attacker’s own strikes being redirected back onto them. This one is pretty easy (if specific) to emulate with Path of War’s disciplines…at least for the Jedi.
Iron Tortoise: Is the most defensive discipline and can straight-up nope some attacks. It’s Bluff associated skill also feels appropriate to Obi Wan, though perhaps not other Soresu users. However the discipline requires shield-use…unless you play the Warder class with the Zweihandler Sentinel archetype.
Sith Variant: the Sith aren’t known for their defensive focus, but eternal guardian is fairly defensive while having a ‘curse’ mechanic and its associated skill is intimidation, which makes it pretty perfect for a Sith fighting form that nevertheless focuses on defense.
Ataru: As Mandalorians entered Sith-Jedi conflicts, both sides developed forms against them. The Jedi for defense against these new foes and the Sith to betray – as always. This form focuses on using the Force to enhance physical abilities for blindingly fast attacks and otherwise impossible acrobatics. Several disciplines fit this, but only two are so thoroughly opposed to each other in philosophy to fit…
Broken Blade: is thematically the monk Discipline of Path of War, it has acrobatics as its associated skill, multiple maneuvers and stances that allow additional attacks and devastatingly strong attacks. It also has a very Jedi feel with a focus on being disciplined and focused. Even calm.
Sith Varant: Primal Fury might not have acrobatics as an associated skill but it fits Sith philosophy to a T. It’s focus on charges and ‘pounce’ mechanics give the feel of rapid blows and high jumps despite survival being the associated skill. Its also thematically about drawing from your raw fury for combat prowess

I'll probably post more detailed and coherent thoughts about my TotJ rewatch later today (now with 30% less yelling), but I have to comment on this little maneuver above.
Mace and Dooku are suddenly attacked from the rear in their confrontation with the Raxus soldiers.
Dooku: Busts out his patented behind-the-back, elegant Makashi defense move.
Mace: PARKOUR!
#i'm sorry but mace just yeeting himself out of the frame is hilarious#also great juxtaposition between the two fighting styles#more on that later#gods dooku is so classy#count dooku#mace windu#it's so funny that dooku does so few acrobatics in terms of his fighting#at least in comparison to other jedi#and yet he is so damn effective with his dance-like makashi movements#anyway#oh boi here we go again star wars....#THiS ALWAYS HAPPENS

i am utterly furious at them inventing star wars french and NOT giving me a swadesh list at the very least because i want now have a burning need to use ghor numbers for makashi's fencing positions. ugh. i'm going to have to go hack some numbers into atrisian basic ones and then sound-change them down to what i need.
I can't tell whether a particular croisé is badly-executed with its performer over-extending or if a sequence of footwork is performed without the required grace but I sure can feel when the standard of performance fails to live up to Dooku’s own exacting standards. Especially when his tutting expands to demonstration first and then, when he decides that I’m not quite understanding the movement to his satisfaction, even further to participant observation. He positions his left forearm along my much shorter one, elbow sticking out but wrist aligning so that the inside of his meets the back of mine. With the palm of his hand near my knuckles, he guides me through a movement that begins with my hand in ninth position, above my ear with an imaginary hilt aimed downward and across my face, through a wring of my wrist that turns it one hundred eighty degrees to end in the fourth position, blocking my torso. My imaginary ’saber rotates around an imaginary opponent’s, the momentum serving to alter the angle of attack in one of the second form's signature ripostes rather than blocking and disengaging before attacking once more like in the fundamentals of the first. The second time through the movement I realise that this isn't the way that riposte is usually performed. It's the way someone being attacked by a larger opponent, with a higher area to strike from, would have to move. Dooku … is a good teacher?
#keeping up with the skywalkers#galaxies far far away may be closer than they appear#dooku: hi i heard it was makashi tournament time? :D#anoon bondara: NO INTERFERING.#dooku: ):#anoon bondara: have a child to distract yourself with you incorrigible teacher

Just thinking about Asajj Ventress using Makashi again, sticking with the form even long past Dooku's death and Order 66, and how complicated that must feel to her: this ancient, specifically Jedi form, this magic Dooku smuggled out of the Temple with him and secretly taught her in a blasphemous parody of the Jedi sacred training bond. Then, getting free of him, and taking that part with her and making it her own. Lightsaber forms are such identity pieces, and it must be such an unusual combination of feelings to be one of the last surviving practitioners under her circumstances: the lineage of half an heir, half a thief.
#I'm fine I'm fine just in my Asajj is a card-carrying member of the Disaster Lineage and I will die to defend her era again#I am most interested in hopefully seeing her use it as her own and I hope we get that in Tales of the Underground#it's such a fascinating choice on her part#and I get in my feelings about specifically Dooku's Makashi surviving the downfall of the Jedi Order into the next generation#not that he deserves to have anything nice he destroyed his own legacy but#it's weird how much Makashi is a JEDI form too the philosophy behind it and all the stopgaps in it to preserve life just stink of Jedi idea#ugh I could go on and on about this#asajj ventress#makashi#dooku

Eurovision 2008 - Number 11 - Mira Konçi & Redon Makashi - "Nën një qiell"
youtube
What you are hearing and looking at here is a reunion of two all time FiK legends. Way back in 1990, Mira Konçi and Redon Makashi duetted at FiK. It was Redon's second festival and Mira's first. It most certainly would not be their last. Throughout the 1990s both Mira and Redon were regulars every December.
Mira won the competition twice. In both the thirty-third and forty-first editions of FiK she emerged as the queen of Albanian music. Even without those wins, she was still perhaps the most popular Albanian singer. Although Redon didn't have quite as much success, he was still there on a regular basis. Mira married the songwriter Shpëtim Saraci early on and many of her big songs were written by him.
By the 2000s, the participation of both Mira and Redon at FiK were becoming less regular. Mira had two children with Shpëtim and took a step back from the spotlight. Her previous appearance at FiK was in 2002, while Redon hadn't taken part since 2004. Getting them both to duet at FiK forty-six was a definite throwback to their beginnings and a big warm hug of nostalgia for all viewers.
The song, Nën një qiell (Under a Sky) was, unsurprisingly, written by Mira's husband Shpëtim. The lyrics were by Agim Doçi, a famed lyricist and poet who had been persecuted under the regime of Enver Hoxha in the early 1980s and took part in the protests in 1990 that saw Albania overthrow its Communist government. It's a song that really does have Albania's soul woven through it.
It's a tale of two lovers separated by the death of one of them. Despite the loss, the love lives on deep in the heart and the only connection left is for them to stare up into the sky, at the stars in their stillness and the bright full moon bring its pale and melancholy light. It brings some solace even though it's nowhere near the connection desired.
That music is a classic power love ballad for two voices. The sort of thing that was all over the music scene way back, but had largely fallen out of favour since the turn of the century. Even though it's not a genre that I have ever been particularly fond of, there's something about this appearance at FiK together with the history of the singers that brings a huge warmth with it. Their well-matched voices bring with them the sweetness of a connection from the past and memories of the first footsteps on a celebrated journey.
Awwww.
Winning FiK this year was never really on the cards. This was all about the memories and celebration. Redon took this and ran. He continued to have hits throughout the 2010s and still does. He was one of the interval acts for the most recent edition for FiK, the sixty-third. Mira stepped away from performing once more and she and her family moved to the USA.
How could I not link to a video of Mira and Redon's first duet - this is Ndoshta Ishte Dashuri (Maybe It Was Love) from FiK twenty-nine in 1990.

Dooku: (to the Younglings) That will be all for today, younglings, but before you go, remember, while we may practice the marks of contact, a Jedi preserves life above all else. In combat we seek only to disarm, never to destroy. Do you understand?
Initiates: (together) Yes, Master Dooku.
Dooku: Very good. Now off with you. Master Braylon is waiting in the Hall of Discovery.
The Initiates file out, talking among themselves.
Rael: You're hard on them, you know that?
Dooku: Too hard?
Dooku: Jedi Lost, by Cavan Scott

#JEDI KNIGHT DOOKU TEACHING A CLASS OF YOUNGLINGS #BEING SO PATIENT AND GENTLE WITH THEM #SHUT UP I’M GONNA CRY FOR WHO HE USED TO BE
#he cares so fucking much and it kills me#Makashi is designed around the disarm because it was created to fight other lightsabers and you'd never want to kill a fallen Jedi#“too hard?” like he's actually anxious about this#master dooku

au where obi wan gets yoinked off of geonosis. like. everything else is the same, anakin and padmé come to save obi, get captured, go into the arena, etc. etc. but dooku just stole obi wan and brought him to serenno w/ him
i fully believe dooku would do that. nobody in the galaxy, not even sheev palpatine knows where obi wan is (palps is panicking over this important variable being nowhere to be seen) and obi is just tied to a chair while dooku is having a power point presentation on why makashi is the best lightsaber form

i'm obsessed with the lightsaber forms. i'm obsessed with the way jedi survivor expressed them with the difference stances. i also think it would be very very funny to see count dooku's face if he saw cal execute a perfect makashi strike and seconds later pull out a blaster. if the indignation didn't kill him outright the spike in blood pressure would absolutely do him in
#personal#i like using the blaster stance specifically for this reason#the ghost of the old guard (obi wan and dooku) hovering over my shoulder absolutely scandalized adds an extra level of entertainment to it

my group was planning for a youngling based SW5e so i needed to start conceptualising a new oc :’) i ended up designing a mikkian named Rima! a girl learning the art of duelling. I wanted her to learn that sort of fencing/makashi-type fighting style and carry a sort of grace about her.
