Sono le 6 del mattino e sono appena arrivato al lavoro. Farsi vedere è importante per chi come me lavora su turni ed esce la mattina molto presto, rientra la sera molto tardi, oppure si avvia per il turno di notte. Il buio, quindi, è una costante della mia vita in bici, comprese quelle volte che esco con gli amici, vado ad una cena, ad un concerto oppure al cinema. Mentre pedalo controllo nel riflesso delle vetrine se il rosso della luce posteriore brilla e lampeggia; la luce anteriore illumina qualche tratto di pista ciclabile che non è illuminato e indica a avvisa della mia presenza a chi mi viene incontro. Essere visibile mi rende tranquillo e mi lascia il piacere di pedalare in ogni momento. Uso la bici tutti i giorni, mi alleno e partecipo ad eventi e competizioni. La bici è la mia passione. Ho rinunciato alla macchina già da qualche anno e la mia vita è decisamente migliorata; certo bisogna prendere le giuste precauzioni, le luci ad esempio sono sempre montate sulle mie bici e controllo sempre che siano cariche.

Hey guys! Long time no talk! So, here’s the deal: I’m doing a walk for Light The Night, I’ve joined the Wawa team, and I’m trying to raise money. Of course, no pressure to donate, but if you’re in a position where you can, it’s going to a wonderful place.

If you haven’t heard of them, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding research, finding cures and ensuring access to treatments for blood cancer patients. They are the largest funder of research to advance cures and advocate for related policies at both state and federal levels. Those efforts have helped to remove barriers to care for cancer patients. Thanks to them, we’ve seen increases in federal research funds and quicker review and approval processes for new therapies. They are also the leading source of free blood cancer information, education, and support for patients, survivors, families, and healthcare professionals.

I had the pleasure of being able to go to the Light The Night Walk last year. I’ll admit, in the beginning, it was just one of those work things you do when trying to advance in a company. Networking, trying to get your name out there. I went with the intention to go, meet a couple of corporate big wigs, be in a few pics and get the heck outta there. Except, I ended up being one of the last people to leave. I was taken back by the absolute beauty and unity of this event. Once it got dark and the walk began, it was beyond incredible to see everybody’s lanterns lit up, and see everybody so passionate. I got to hear so many people’s stories, these people so brave and strong, and I knew I was taking part in something. So, now having witnessed firsthand the beauty of this walk and what it stands for, I hope to take part in this long after I leave Wawa, and I want to do everything I can to support this cause.
