Marty’s death destroyed him, causing him to stop working for months and only jumping back into action when the Sokovia Accords were signed.
In the years following, Jeffrey only became more outspoken against SHIELD and other government entities targeting gifted people, fueling his grief into his work and eventually reconnecting with an older Willow, asking for her assistance in helping his clients.

I mean... Vision being not nice regarding Wanda in Remender's UA, and having that thing with Eve, and then suddenly deciding Wanda is actually his BFF and she desperately needs him in her life, not his new wife and their multiple children. Then he was like "Nope!" and Vision (2015) happened. It seems like he can't ever decide if he loves her and wants to be friends or hates her and feels pain by the mere remembrance of their past and the emotions that come with it.
man 2014 was a fucking wild ride. I think for Wanda especially the gap between Children’s Crusade and Scarlet Witch is just a fever dream. She was in a lot of stuff, but only barely, and a lot of it was bad or just weird. She had at least two new costumes, the Magneto ret-retcon happened, everything about Remender’s Uncanny including that stupid shit with the High Evolutionary happened ... and she didn’t get possessed per se but between Mother and the Inversion event she sure spent a lot of time not in control of her body or mind. Ugh. What do y’all think about her role in AvX, such as it was?
Anyways, to your point, Vision and Wanda’s relationship in the last decade has been very hot and cold, and I would say that Vision is generally the one being a weird, inconsistent, toxic figure in her life. And again, to put it very bluntly, they were mutually mind-control raped in Secret Empire. That fucking happened. Now, a lot of that incoherent characterization, and, y’know, all of Secret Empire should be attributed mainly to bad writing. Or at least poor writing decisions. Or poor staffing decisions, such as the choice to hire Nick Spencer. But if we take the material at face value, I definitely thing that Vision has become a less-likeable character and his history with Wanda has been totally soured for me.

Twenty-eight books read in 2019.  Sixteen longlisted books.  One person who wastes his time writing sh*t as if they really matter.
Here it is.  The best books I read in the past year.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
The unfortunate books that I had to let go since I only had ten spots to fill.
Turtles All the Way Down by John Green (2017)
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie (1934)
History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera (2017)
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie (1926)
Bird by Bird by Anne Lammott (1994)
The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (2014)
*Ratings range from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
10th Place
56 by Bob Ong (2018)
Rating: 4.300
Bob Ong makes a comeback on my list with his latest novel.  His other book, Si, ranked 10th last 2015.  This is the second time a Filipino book enters the list and is also the second nonfiction book ever—after Into the Wild last 2016.
In his latest release, Ong returns to the writing style that made him famous— reminiscent of his earlier books like ABNKKBSNPLAko.  56 is like a 300-page commentary or editorial about the issues of the present Filipino generation.
Other readers have found the book a little too preachy.  I find it enlightening as it serves as a wake-up call to the Filipinos who are turning their blindsides to the harsh realities of our nation.
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
9th Place
Mga Kirot ng Kapalaran (Kikomachine Komix blg. 11) by Manix Abrera (2015)
Rating: 4.445
This is a long-overdue recognition to my favorite comic strip artist (Fun Fact: I met him quite a few times already).  For many years, I've ignored the chance to even put his works in the list of contenders.  I'm not throwing it away again.  Now, I have my first book to enter the top 10 classified under comics and graphic novels.
In this collection of strips by Manix Abrera, his work remains as humorous and as satirically laughable as the first time I saw his comic. Themes have changed to reflect the new trends and issues of our present society.
For as long as Manix draws and publishes his work, I will continue to read them as I know he gives an intellectual yet amusing input to our society's problems.
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
8th Place
Mga Batang Poz by Segundo Matias, Jr. (2018)
Rating: 4.450
“Beautiful and relevant, but not flawless,” this is what I said on my review for this YA novel.
Mga Batang Poz is the third Filipino book on this list.  Having three books on the list is a first.  Furthermore, this is also the first time in four years that a Filipino book enters the list.
As previously mentioned, I have certain problems with regard to the overarching narrative of the novel.  I wish that Matias could’ve written something more elaborate or something that doesn’t feel forced.
Nevertheless, the book accomplishes its goal of being a story that advocates HIV awareness, especially towards the youth.
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
7th Place
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (2012)
Rating: 4.485
In this book, you'll see both the cruelty and the compassion of humanity through the eyes of a gorilla named Ivan who is the narrator of the story.
Ivan is based on a real-life gorilla who was being used as a live animal attraction in Zoo Atlanta.
It is quite obvious that the book is meant for a younger audience, but despite this, I know anyone of any age will be able to appreciate it.  Ivan is a gorilla after all, and I think the simplicity of how it was written suits his character, making the tone of the story more natural.
Overall, it was very touching.  Although it mirrors pretty much what happened to the real-life Ivan, it efficiently delivers its message for animal welfare.
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
6th Place
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie (1939)
Rating: 4.525
This is a mystery novel filled with suspense and everything that'll make you love and hate it at the same time.  The horror it gives chills you to the bone for every page you turn.
Agatha Christie is insane—and I mean that in a good way.  The plot was so well-thought out that even when nearing at the end, I had no clue who the culprit was.  When it was revealed to me, I was like, “Yeah.  That makes absolute f*cking sense.”
For a book that has ten major characters, it does well in handling them.  You know when a piece of literature is brilliantly made when even if its length isn’t considerably long, it doesn’t sacrifice the characters’ backgrounds and the narrative of the story.
Despite the novel’s inhumane and despicable acts, it also addresses issues about criminal injustices that are still prevalent today.  In our country alone, criminals—corrupt officials, master drug dealers, rapists, murderers—are still roaming around the streets, evading the consequences of their actions.   At times when the law is not enforced properly, people resort to their own type of justice.
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
5th Place
Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram (2018)
Rating: 4.590
In this debut novel by Adib Khorram, the titular character Darius suffers from clinical depression.  Also, he's a Star Trek and Lord of the Rings fan.
This book demonstrates the fact that real depression is not simply cured by positive reinforcement and bible verses—as what most overly religious people think.
The novel highlights Darius' relationship with the other characters—most especially with Sohrab.  It shows how he copes up with them while he struggles with his mental disorder.
There are also subtle hints of homosexuality, which added to the overall tension of the story since the main characters are Muslims.  It wasn't blatant but it was obviously present—in the right and necessary amount.
To me, this is a spiritual brother of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz—one of my favorite books.  It gave me the same feeling of awe, beautiful pain, and joyful nostalgia. There were parts that broke my heart—I was ugly crying while riding a bus—and by the end, I was a complete mess, although I'm utterly happy.
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
4th Place
Moonrise by Sarah Crossan (2017)
Rating: 4.595
What I love most about this book is how it was written.  Instead of being in paragraphs, it was written in verses—like poetry.  I thought it was creative and oddly fitting for the story.
Even though there are more blank spaces on the pages than letters, those words are enough to draw me into the story.
The novel is about Ed whose brother was up on death row.  I found myself rooting for him, and I was hoping similarly to how he was hoping in the story.  When the end came, I couldn't help myself from closing my eyes.
The narrative was fairly simple, it matches the way it was written.  The characters—although few and also written with the utmost simplicity—feel so human and are not flat, cardboard cutouts.
In the light of all the flawed justice systems and abuses of law enforcers not just in America but everywhere else in the world, it's good to find a book that's bold enough to address such issues and an author who's brave enough to write them.
Lots of murderers are on the loose, yet there are innocent people being slaughtered for crimes they didn't commit.
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
3rd Place
On the Come Up by Angie Thomas (2018)
Rating: 4.605
Just when you thought Angie Thomas couldn't write anything as good as The Hate U Give (THUG), she gives us this.  If it's not better, then it sure is as brilliant as her debut novel.
This is Thomas' second consecutive year in my list, with THUG bagging the top plum last year.
The novel is proof of Thomas’s writing prowess.  It successfully immersed me into the life of her protagonist, a life filled with hope, angst, and ambition.  And the dialogue… Especially the rap battles.  They were amazing.  Seeing as Thomas herself was a rapper, you can feel the ingenuity in her words.
Moreso, this is one book that we really need in our present times.  It reflects all of my sentiments regarding social media and how it can make or break a person.  And how much the oppressed and marginalized communities lack representation, and how they are still subject to much prejudice.
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
2nd Place
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (2007)
Rating: 4.680
This beautiful novel demonstrates the horror of domestic violence towards women.  It also provides a glimpse of the people and culture of Afghanistan during the times of war.
I'm in love with how Khaled Hosseini's characters flesh out from the pages.  You'd love them.  You'd care for them.  Their agony becomes yours.  Their pain drips out from the corners of the books as your tears trail down your cheeks.
And on their sweet, small victories, you'd give a sigh of relief as the anxiety is slowly drained from your body.
In the two years that I've read a book by Hosseini, it didn't fail to shatter my heart. The Kite Runner ranked first in my 2017 list, and now this. If ever get to read another one of his books, I've no doubt it will also be a contender for that year's list.
━━━━ ☆ ━━━━
1st Place
Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman (2018)
Rating: 4.765
This book is also up on my shelf for the best sequels ever—be it for any medium.
I read this earlier this year and it remained unbeatable until 2019 ended.
This is the second book in Neal Shusterman's Arc of a Scythe trilogy, the sequel to Scythe—which placed 3rd in my 2017 list.
Growth and expansion. These are the things I love about the sequel.  Ronan and Citra, the two main protagonists of the trilogy, are older, wiser, and better people, despite the fact that they're teenagers.  You can feel their struggles with their respective endeavors.
Also, the universe is bigger.  The Arc of Scythe novels feature a world where death does not exist and everyone is biologically immortal.  In order to balance the earth’s population, there are these so-called Scythes whose life-long job is to assassinate anyone they choose.
In this sequel, you get to know more about the mechanisms of their world.  There’s a new main character, Grayson, who takes you deeper and gives you a view of what it's like to live as a normal human.
The book deals with the adverse effects of the ways power-hungry people want to achieve their ambitions.
But that's not why I went gaga after reading the book.
IT.  WAS.  EPIC.  The plot twists within the plot twists.  The narrative.  And the ending.  My god, that ending.  I COULD HEAR MY SILENT SCREAMS.  After the last page, the only thing I thought of was, "GIVE ME THE THIRD BOOK RIGHT NOW!"
Thunderhead isn’t flawless, but it’s a very fine piece of literature that I recommend to anyone who loves to read.
• • • • •
I hope I won't regret putting Thunderhead in first place after a few years.  I regret giving the top spot to I'll Give You the Sun last 2016.  After pondering about the books I've read in the past years, I've found that Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See is one remarkable and memorable book, and the one I should've given the highest honors.
Books with relevant themes dominated my shelf but the book that won my heart was the one with intricate plots and a phenomenal ending.  It feels weird but I hope for the best.
Happy New Year, everyone!

ENGLISH TRANSLATION ( Jeannette Nobbe)
VOLSKRANT.NL 31/01/20
by Mennon Pot
https://www.volkskrant.nl/cultuur-media/conchita-wurst-sorry-dat-ik-zo-n-wandelend-cliche-ben~b0477817/
(Conchita) Wurst: 'I'm sorry I'm a walking cliché'.
Above all we know Conchita Wurst as the bearded 'female 'singer who won the ESC in 2014. But we've moved on and are a bit wiser. It´s just Wurst now, but the beard is still there.
With light feathered steps, Thomas Neuwirth (31) enters the conference room of the hotel in Groningen where he is staying: black combat boots, black leather pants, tight black T-shirt, the black beard and the perfect short trimmed jet black hair..
He introduces himself as Tom. It's not difficult to recognise the bearded drag queen Conchita in him. (Kopenhagen, 2014, remember?) but the dress and wig are stowed away for a while. Conchita has a sort of sabbatical, so to speak.
Neuwirth is on tour as a man. Stage name: Wurst. Yesterday evening he performed in Groningen; the next concert will be 7 february at the Melkweg in Amsterdam. His new album 'Truth over Magnitude' also carries the artist´s name Wurst.
Let's get this straight: when the subject is Conchita Wurst, the word 'transgender' sometimes comes a long. Wrongly. Neuwirth is a man, ('but incredibly gay, of course'), who has a choice from now on: being on tour as a drag queen (Conchita) or as a man (Wurst) .
´a lot of fun, being a masculine stage persona', he says. Conchita will turn up again somewhere else.
Holland appreciated Conchita's 'Rise like a Phoenix' with the highest score, almost 6 years ago.
Neuwirth didn't forget: twelve points, douze points from Holland for the bearded diva from Austria.
Then hectic years followed. 'After the Song Contest I thought, I have to make the most of it now, build my fame and cash it in. So I surrounded myself with all kinds of experts, managers, stylists, make/up artists, the whole circus. After 3 years I was exhausted. I couldn´t do it anymore. I told my audience every nigh, be yourself, believe in yourself. But along the way, I forgot myself.´
He got rid of the experts’ circus and is having a relaxed tour now, with a small entourage. He feels good again, although in 2018 he had to announce he is infected with the HIV virus. His manager politely asks, almost in an humble manner, not to talk about that.
Tom doesn´t appear to be very worried about that. There has seldom been a star who starts an interview so cheerfully. ´A great photo shoot and after that talk about things I find beautiful and fun.
Terrific, I was already looking forward to it when I came out of bed.´

SOUNDTRACK
Music from the Motion Picture Titanic ...1997
´My first CD. I was 9 years old when I bought it. `My heart will go on´’changed my life´. As it were, Céline Dion gave me permission to be utterly dramatic and to be over the top. When I came out of the closet, I heard that song in my head.
It was also a liberation for me as a singer. My mom always sang with a thin, high falsetto voice. I thought that was how it should be. Dion taught me, you may yell as hard as you can, with all the power you have in you. When you sing so loud, you can’t fake it. The sound you push out of your body, is the sound of your body, unique and by definition authentic. Céline Dion taught me that singing is something really physical.´
SERIES
The Crown ..Netflix..., 2016 until 2019
´For me it´s getting difficult to watch a movie to the end. I guess that´s because of all the series on Netflix and HBO. My favorite is `The Crown´.. ´the intro alone is so beautiful, that liquid gold that forms a crown, such art. I used to watch it twice. Ít says something about the fact that I can´t choose between the two women who play Elizabeth and the two men who play prince Philip. All the actors are great. The costumes, the stories, the palaces, it´s so delightful. The history also intrigues me, after every episode I checked on Wikipedia if it was really what had happened.
PARTIES
´At Christmas I always come back to Vienna. I love the lights, glitters and decorations, my inner Mariah Carey is looking forward to it every year. Christmas 2019 was extra special because it had been a long time since the whole family came together at my grandmother´s house.´
I would love it to be like that every year... A couple of days being together in one home. Talking, getting to really know my family. Maybe now you think, days on and on with uncles and aunts, such horror! It is easy to say that I don´t really have much in common with these people. But I do, Really. They all have a story and similarities with your stories. Ask them about your life and tell them about yours.´
That´s what Christmas is all about to me. To me, the birth of Jesus has not that much to do with it.´
ISLAND..
I have an agreement with my best friends to go on vacation at least once every two years. We have been to Mykonos a couple of times, THE especially gay island. I´m sorry I sound like a walking cliché.´
The sun, the sea, the beaches, the small streets, so cosy. We rent a house with a pool and for a week or two we live in our own little paradise, actually being a bit tipsy the whole time. Go shopping and cook.´
`What´s also very important, on Mykomos, the wind is always blowing the right way. I love to watch the women, because their dresses and their hair flutter so beautifully.´
STYLE ICON
Victoria Beckham
I was and still am a big Spice Girls fan and I especially admire Victoria Beckham, because she lives her life the way she wants. She appears in tabloids every day, but has survived a crisis in her relationship and has stayed happy with the love of her life and her family. I think that it´s really strong.´
In regard to her style, she can go from very classy to very trashy, I like that. One day she´s wearing a designer dress, the next she and David Beckham are walking in identical jogging suits. She couldn’t care less. I think that it´s inspiring.´
´I think she is utterly authentic, raging through the glamour. Although I have never met her, I´m sure that I could have a lot of fun with her. I´d love to drink some tequila with her for an afternoon or so.´
AGE
30
´I thought becoming 30 was really special, I lost my wild behaviour, came to be more restful. Some way or another I think a lot about some things my mother said: in my twenties, I ignored those lessons, but now I´m 30, I suddenly realised she was right for example how important family and friends are.
I´m 31 now, I have inner peace and my life in order, but I still feel young. I´m convinced that this the best period of my life´. My advise to everybody... be 30.´
ALBUM
Recomposed by Max Richter / The Four Seasons ..2012
I don´t play any instruments and until not too long ago, I didn´t really know much about music. I really found that a pity sometimes. Fortunately, my good friend Martin studies at the School of Musical Arts... !! He´s studying the history of music intensely and tells me about a lot of great composers. I learn a lot from that.´´I never understood classical music and didn´t really know anything about it, but thanks to the listening sessions with Martin I fell in love with Vivaldi..
The pop artist of the classical artists.
´Max Richter interpreted Vivaldi´s Four Seasons and composed it in a modern fashion. It´s a modern, post minimalistic piece, completely different from the original one, but you still recognise it. Greatly done, at the moment it´s my favorite album.´
BOOK
Friedrich Schiller « Ueber die aesthetische Erziehung des Menschen ». About the aesthetic upbringing of the people..´
´A good friend advised me to read the philosophical letters from Friedrich Schiller ..Letters, 1794-1795)
That´s a hard job to do. Because of the old fashioned German I had to read some sentences 5 times. You always have to wrestle yourself through a thick layer of 18th century sexism.
´But further on you´ll find something beautiful. Schiller writes a lot about finding your inner beauty and your own truth. Dare to be yourself. Embrace your darker sides. Those are important as well.´
´At the same time he preaches self-perspective.. don´t take yourself too seriously, you´re not the center of the universe. That is very worthy to me. Namely because I DO think I´m the center of the universe, haha.
`Still it´s very wise of him, to send a message from 1795 to a 21st century queen with a Mariah Carey complex.´
CLUB
Circus in Vienna
´The Arena is a huge complex in Vienna, a concert building with a mega discotheque. A couple of times a year they organize Circus, my favorite gay club night. I always go there with my group of closest friends, but it´s actually a bit of a rule that we lose each other and disappear into the crowd.´
´I roam around all night- Every room, every floor has its own musical theme and decoration. I love the types of people I meet there, their clothes, their fetishisms, everything.´
….Arena Vienna, Baumgasse 80, Vienna
CITY
Amsterdam
´I live in Vienna, I love Vienna and I will always come back there, but the greatest city I´ve been to is Amsterdam – since then I traveled all over the world so I know what I´m talking about.
´Of all the cities I visited, Amsterdam is the only one where I would want to live a period of time. So that´s what I´m gonna do, this summer, for a few months to begin with.´
´I can see that Amsterdam also has the flagship stores from all known store chains. And a lot of tourists, like every special city. But I see all these small jewelry shops where they sell their self-made jewelry. Little bakeries. Cosy streets. And a lot of water. I love water. I love cities with lots of water.´

Where are you from? How did you get into creative work and what is your impetus for creating?
I currently live in Lafayette, IN, but I grew up in Crown Point, IN.  Both my parents are resourceful, creative, and great at making or fixing anything.  I consider myself fortunate that they always encouraged me to be anything I wanted to be, and even though I realized I wasn't going to be a ballerina or an astronaut, I never thought twice about being an artist.  My mom used to make beautiful stained glass, and I think her example was the impetus for my desire to create.  As a kid, I would copy the images in my coloring books onto my own paper instead of coloring within the lines.  My parents signed me up for drawing classes at South Shore Arts in Munster, where I learned fundamental techniques and used pastels for the first time.  Although my mom still denies calling herself an artist by saying her sister is the talented one, they both are.  My grandmother was an artist, too, but I think she and my mother simply did not have an opportunity to develop their abilities.  In some ways, I feel like I'm honoring this innate ability that has been passed down through the women in my family.       Tell me about your current/upcoming show/exhibit/book/project and why it’s important to you. What do you hope people get out of your work?
In May 2019, I participated in the On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Course provided by the Indiana Arts Commission, which has made a tremendous impact in helping me recognize my potential and define my creative goals.  I was awarded the On-Ramp Fellowship Grant, enabling me to complete a project of my design.  The first part was to complete the remaining supervision and exam testing requirements needed to become a Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC).  The second part included researching and developing my own Creative Empowerment Workshop series, which will provide psychoeducation about art therapy, information regarding local mental health services, and opportunities for therapeutic art making.  The third part, which I am currently working on, includes creating a new body of work that reflects my understanding of mental illness and mental wellness.
As an art therapist, I facilitate the art making of those with mental illness as they discover new ways of being.  During art therapy sessions, my clients and I often discuss issues of relationships, loss, change, acceptance, identity, and meaning.  We explore these six themes in relation to the people, places, and things in our lives that have made an impression on us.  In addiction and mental health recovery programs, it is common to hear the phrase “people, places, and things.”  The phrase serves as a reminder that anything can be a trigger leading to a relapse or a return to maladaptive patterns of being.  My art therapy training has allowed me to uncover, recover, and reestablish new ways of thinking that I then translate into my own creative work.  I wanted to begin a personal exploration of the six themes and develop a greater understanding of my own people, places, and things that have led me to be the person I am now.  I’ve been selected for a solo exhibition at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation in September 2021, and will offer my workshops leading up to and during the exhibition.  I want to increase awareness of mental health issues and challenge the stigma of mental illness.

Does collaboration play a role in your work—whether with your community, artists or others? How so and how does this impact your work?
I think collaborating with and creating alongside others can be very empowering.  I’ve recognized isolation can breed self-doubt and hinder creative work.  Without constructive feedback from peers regarding areas that need growth, or someone to highlight potential where I see none, I find it difficult to delve into new projects.  For a while, it felt like my artist and art therapist identities were separate, so I wanted to find a way to unify those roles.  I've used my grant period to learn about alternative roles for art therapists and research models of community art therapy in nontraditional settings and formats, such as an open-studio concept.  There are not a lot of opportunities available for people to make meaningful connections with others in a nonjudgmental atmosphere.  Stigma surrounding mental illness and treatment prevent people from seeking help until it becomes unbearable.  I hope my workshops provide a safe alternative, either as an introduction to the benefits of therapeutic art making and as a preventative measure, or as a step-down from more intensive treatment in order to maintain wellness.
Considering the political climate, how do you think the temperature is for the arts right now, what/how do you hope it may change or make a difference?
I think it’s possible for artists to amplify voices that are not heard, regardless of the political climate. Hopefully my art and my workshops not only decrease stigma in the community, but also encourage local leaders and politicians to support policy that leads to increases in the funding, availability, and accessibility of mental health resources.

Artist Wanda Ewing, who curated and titled the original LFF exhibit, examined the perspective of femininity and race in her work, and spoke positively of feminism, saying “yes, it is still relevant” to have exhibits and forums for women in art; does feminism play a role in your work?
I agree, it is still relevant, and feminism does play a role in my work.  I would not call my work overtly feminist, but it is autobiographical, and I think it reveals my interest in the female mind and body.  I’ve been strongly influenced by my grandmother, her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, and its impact on each member of my family, especially my mother. A lot of my recent work has been a reflection on the changing roles of women, for example, from daughter to caretaker, and how that change affects one psychologically.  I think empathy grows through recognition of what is fragile and vulnerable in oneself, in others, and in one’s surroundings. Empathy is what is needed to ensure anyone's voice is heard, but we especially need to be listening to the Black Lives Matter movement, and amplify BIPOC and  LGBTQIA voices. Ewing’s advice to aspiring artists was “you’ve got to develop the skill of when to listen and when not to;” and “Leave. Gain perspective.” What is your favorite advice you have received or given?
A few of my college professors said to never stop making something.  Thinking about the next step is only part of it, but you have to keep experimenting and creating something, as often as you can, even if you’re not completely invested in it.  I think it helped me realize not all work is precious, or note-worthy, and it doesn’t have to be, but it is still important in getting you to the next step, especially when you don’t know what the next step is yet.

Dish for Effectiveness: Could Duets Be Gaining Elements for Brandy and also Bryson Tiller at 2020 Grammys? - Rated R&B
Tumblr media
At the 62nd Annual Grammy Honors this Sunday, H.E.R. as well as Daniel Caesar are actually completing for their 2nd gain in the most effective R&B Efficiency group.
The 2 R&B stars succeeded in 2014 for their double-platinum duet "Highlight," which showed up on Caesar's Grammy-nominated debut album and also on H.E.R.'s Grammy-winning self-titled compilation. However, this year, H.E.R.
as well as Caesar will definitely go head-to-head in the Best R&B Efficiency nationality for their very own corresponding partnerships. Caesar's salute is for "Affection Again,"a well-layered duet including the powerful vocalist Brandy. In the meantime, H.E.R. is actually hoping to court interest for her sensation single"Could possess Been" including Bryson Tiller. While taking residence the greatest R&B Functionality respect for either H.E.R. or Caesar would certainly better confirm they are at the best of their game, it can potentially shift the future focus of the Audio Academy and also other industry insiders on their duet companions. The Audio Institute possesses possessed its portion of disputable snubs along with Grammy nominations. It was absolutely no various when the 2017 nods were actually introduced. Tiller, who to begin with observed excellence in 2015 for his smash hit "Don't,"made his very first nomination for his consequence solitary"Exchange."Seeming on his 2015 T R A P S O U L debut, the Mekanics-produced keep track of was up for Finest R&B Tune at the 59th Yearly Grammy Honors; nevertheless, the track dropped against"
Pond Due To The Ocean" through Maxwell. , Tiller didn't have any various other opportunity to gain a Grammy that evening, as he was actually just chosen for one award. As one of the brightest celebrities of 2016, it was unbelievably baffling to find that he had not been looked at a Greatest Brand new Performer challenger. Many unexpected was the glaring omission of his T R A P S O U L cd in the most ideal Urban Contemporary Cd operating, despite its own launch within the eligibility time period and its fast-track to platinum eagle condition before the
2017 ceremony. Besides a hit RIAA qualification, the album welcomed however an additional sub-genre of R&B that remains to be embraced through newcomers and also created musicians. A year later on, however, it seemed that a Grammy remained in Tiller's clutch with
the outstanding summertime struck" Wild Thoughts."The dance-flavored collabo, which includes Rihanna as well as DJ Khaled, proved a hit, earning positionings on numerous around the world charts, including topping the UK Songs Graph and also the variety 2 place on the Advertising board Hot one hundred. The worldwide sensation and its own very hot popular music video recording obtained crazy elections and wins at different honor shows, such as the MTV Online Video Music Honors and also the iHeartRadio Songs Awards. Still, along with all its mainstream focus,"Wild Feelings"really did not leave behind a score on Audio Academy recommending participants that left behind the keep track of out
of all expected Grammy categories, a lot of significantly Song of the Year as well as Greatest Rap/Sung Performance. Brushed off again at winning his initial Grammy, Tiller as well as his co-stars applied enjoyable faces as well as shook the crowd along with an impressive functionality of the horrendous file at the 60th Yearly Grammy Honors. After a few years of experiencing the cool shoulder by the Audio Academy, Tiller can be a shoo-in for his 1st prize in the greatest R&B Efficiency classification. Featured on H.E.R.'s first EP installation in August 2018,"Could possibly've Been actually"instantly came to be a fan-favorite. The thumping slow bind discovers the two vocalists meshing their distinct voice methods to coo regarding
the opportunities of a missed out on romance. Taking over the on the metropolitan adult contemporary airwaves and also the Signboard Adult R&B Tracks graph, specifically, the D'Mile-produced track soon shot to on both graphes in front of the summer season. The standard R&B chart victories were actually firsts for Tiller, who discovered much of his well-deserving success on the metropolitan airplay face. Past the compelling graph splendor," Can've Been "came to be for each H.E.R. and Tiller.
Once he is actually recommended once more, alongside a brand-new Grammy favorite, factors are actually looking up for the snare soul hitmaker. And also while Tiller as well as H.E.R.'s duet could possibly take the very best R&B Functionality trophy, Brandy and also Caesar are actually conveniently an unbeatable pair, very. The Singing Bible, who prepares her highly-anticipated 7th album, is inching closer to her best possibility in 15 years at gaining
her 2nd Grammy, along with assistance coming from the group's previous champion Caesar. The Audio Academy has rejected a number of music's finest artists, like Brandy, for time and opportunity once more, leaving behind numerous supposing what the requirements to win the gold is. Throughout her 25-year occupation, the vocal acrobat has actually been actually a total amount of 12 times. At the 41st Yearly Grammy Honors, she scored four elections-- the absolute most of
her career in one night-- for her sophomore cd Never ever Point out Certainly never. She left the 1999 service with her only profession Grammy for her duet"The Child is actually Mine" with Monica. Her 2002 cd Complete Moon and also the 2004
consequence Afrodisiac each slashed nods Best Contemporary R&B Cd, an honor that signed up with the R&B range in 2003. Even between 2005 and also 2014, Brandy hasn't arrested one nomination for her
last final pair ofCds Human, Two Pair Of ). Having actually not found a salute in 15 years is actually pretty complicated to a B-Rocka follower. In 2012, she discharged, a showpiece that was entitled to a Finest Urban Contemporary Cd nomination for her innovative vocal methods as well as the audios notable production as well as impressive songwriting at the 56th Yearly Grammy Awards in 2014
. Adding healthy and balanced competition to the most effective Stand out Solo Functionality group for "Without You "and also responds for Best R&B Functionality and Ideal R&B Tune for her Chris Brown-assisted&chart-topper"Put It Down"wouldn't have been poor either. Labels should be periodically advised to adequately provide its performers 'job to respectivegroups,
while the Audio Institute's voting participants possess to in fact choose champions based upon genuine ability and also not name recognition. Thinking about Brandy's 2019 Absolute best R&B Performance nod, it seems that both the label-- Golden Kid Recordings and also Label Nu, Inc/Entertainment One-- and also the Audio Academy reside in deal on musicianship this go-round.
"A considerable amount of the time when I went through not being actually able to receive my songs to the masses, it is actually because I was actually vocalizing the wrong&tracks,"."Yeah, I can easily make a tune sound great. But if I don't strongly believe in the track, then it's certainly not visiting go anywhere." Her belief in the"Love Again"
duet along with Caesar went somewhere. Discharged first as a track on Caesar's second effort, their wonderful relationship was likewise functioned as the top solitary off Brandy's upcoming album. A month after its own landing, the awesome tune regarding sophisticated relationships on the Advertising board Adult R&B Tracks graph. It became her highest graphing solitary on the respective chart in twenty years, as "Almost Doesn't Count"topped at No. 2 in 1999. A week just before the 2020 Grammy nominations were revealed,"Passion Again "rose to the first location on the Adult R&B Tracks graph
, leading in her very first chart-topper on the chart. Brandy has been possessing a job resurgence such as awards. She was actually bestowed the in 2016. She got the at the 2018 Urban Honors. In 2013, she took
house the. Picking up her second Grammy isn't difficult this year. Furthermore, if Brandy carries out succeed, it can likely place her and her upcoming album to acquire much Grammy love at the 2021 event-- if her brand new job is launched during the course of the qualification duration.
Depending on to her upgraded Twitter bio, a February album release is actually right now the hearsay . That pointed out, Brandy could possibly even possess some of the greatest nights in music like her fellow '90s sisters Mariah Carey(2006)and Mary J. Blige( 2007). While citizens might seemingly lag either"Could possibly've Been"or
" Affection Again, "the Finest R&B Functionality ethnicity is actually still a difficult type. Other candidates consist of, who is the very most nominated performer this year. The breakout celebrity of 2019 is actually up for"Precisely Exactly How I Experience"
with Gucci Locks. The unfazed track seems on her extremely lauded album. R&B newbie remains in the competing"Roll Some Mo,"an additional D'Mile-produced cut. The keep track of is actually included on Daye's debut, which is actually additionally up for Ideal R&B Album. Additionally aspect of the competition is actually, that gained his initial
trophy last year in a rap area. The periodic rapper/singer is actually recommended for "Come Residence" with. Co-produced by Jairus"J.Mo" Mozee, the pleading partnership shows up on.Paak's R&B-hefty album. To find who the Best R&B Show Grammy mosts likely towhen the pouch levels, check out the 62nd Annual Grammy Honors live on Sunday, January 26 at 8 p.m. SHOCK THERAPY/ 5 p.m. PST. The ceremony is going to entertain through 15-time Grammy champion Alicia Keys. Which history do you presume will win Best R&B Efficiency this Sunday? Tweet Antwane at @ 9thwonderofPR.

Day 2: March 20
Conservation and surveillance: the protection through images (Laura Löbl López)
Since the 20th century, the interest in wildlife conservation started to arise. Overexploitation and destruction of the environment became noticeable for the masses. To protect those landcapes for the following generations, surveillance systems were installed to control both nature and humans.
This paper explores the eco-aesthetics brought to us after the established net of surveillance systems, brought together to shield endangered species. The problem of this field begins when the conservationism movement is seen throughout animals’ visuality. It will further be argued that the division of humans and animals becomes blurry, as animals turn anthropomorphic as they are watched. It also shows the switch of intent of this technology, watching only animals to humans again in protected spaces such as national parks or reservoirs.
Recordings of movement, digitalization and propaganda are of special interest as they are captured for the sole purpose of protecting and informing globally. The focus will be on images from protected parks and environmentally-aware institutions in Europe.
The wide range of photographs will be reduced to a smaller fraction of images, accessible digitally and publically. To summarize, the argument will involve how culture, society and mass media interacts with the visuality of natural sciences.
Reclaiming the Autonomy: A Contemporary shift of Gazing at Animals in the Eastern Asian Urban Context  (Yuying Zhao)
While the ecological aesthetics of the East Asian landscape have been constructed for hundreds of years through literature and paintings, how human gaze at animals in the same cultural context remains blurred and controversial. This paper will examine a contemporary reflection of the visual arts regarding animals emerging from this region, which rebels against the powerful zoomorphic and colonial perspectives of the past. I begin with a short review of traditional ideologies regarding the human-animal relationship, and how these ideas are intertwined with the capitalism since the 18th century. Then I introduce several artworks which depict animals in today’s urban environment and conduct a detailed analysis of the interdisciplinary art project Institute of Critical Zoologists (since 2007) from Singapore and the independent film An Elephant Sitting Still (2018) from China. Through combining environmental aesthetics with Judith Butler's theory of precarious life, I will claim that this deliberation of animal’s autonomy rooted in the urban everyday life is not only crucial to start a conversation between our own time’s conditions with ancient local ecologic aesthetics as Taoism, but also to shape a more nutritious human-animal, and even human-human relationship.
The question of the dog - Neither human nor animal (Roxana Kaboli)
What lies in between the animal and the human? By using visual examples from the film The Lobster (2015) by Yorgos Lanthimos and the monument statue of Balto the dog in New York City, this paper will examine the grey zone of the animal/human dichotomy with focus on the domesticated pet, more specifically, the dog and what we can learn about our being in this process. The pet dog in modern societies has been removed from their natural habitats and being integrated into to human society not only as pets but as movie stars, heroes, working in various jobs like police dogs, therapy dogs, and service dogs but also having various humans working for them like dog groomers and dog sitters. When altering toward human ideals both aesthetically and in behavior, has the dog been altered away from nature and other animals?
Theories discussing the human/animal relations from Martin Heidegger to Jacques Derrida with the comments and criticism from Matthew Calarco will be used as points of departures to understand the philosophical discourses on the nature of humanity and animality. Writings from Gilles Deleuze will also be used in this paper to lead a discussion on what we as humans can learn and take from the discussion about a creature that is not yet human but no longer animal.
“Everyone in me is a bird. I am beating all my wings” Grieving, remembering, and visualizing extinct species. (Christina Tente)
The writer of this paper is interested in the story of Martha, a passenger pigeon, the last of her species, who passed away in 1914. Martha died in a zoo, her body was dissected and studied by scientists. Martha lived on through the stories, the poems, the artworks that were created for her. Martha is visible in Cincinnati, on her memorial statue, but Martha is invisible to the rest of the world. Martha’s death was ritualized during the Memorial Day of the Lost Species in 2014, but the impact of her death is long forgotten. We remember and “see” and mourn Martha, because Martha has a name and a face and a back-story. But what about all the other species that have become extinct or are becoming extinct every year? How do we, humans, decide which animals are grievable, which animals are worth remembering, whose death has an impact and whose life is simply bare? Focusing on Martha, this paper attempts to explore these questions, with the help of Judith Butler’s writings on grievability and precarity, as well as Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s concept of becoming-animal. The writer will problematize the anthropomorphization of endangered and extinct species, and she will explore various ways of creative and ritualistic demonstrations that facilitate grief and catharsis.
Temple of no walls: Outdoor churches and experience of divine nature (Karolina Curova)
“When I am seeking you, I seek whole-heartedly,
When I am encountering you, I encounter whole-bodily.
So I walk into the wild, I breath and walk, breath and walk,
And then in the middle of it, a shrine, peace, the creation of yours, and there
I find you, in the silence,
In the whispers of the green trees, through the crack of the branches, the sunrays caress my skin…”
(KMC, 2019)
This presentation aims to intertwine the feeling one gets when encountering the nature in the whole essence and feeling one gets when encountering spiritual place. My case study will be the outdoor churches - churches without walls inside of the forests and nature reservoirs. Churches that are not limited by walls, but by trees.
Looking at history, early Christians did not attempt to build churches, they solely gathered and praised - first church building was built approximately around year 233 - 256. This case study aims to come back to the early traditions and rituals.
Theories used in this presentation will problematize and discuss this topic with texts by Weinryb’s
“Living Matter: Materiality, Maker, and Ornament in the Middle Ages” and Kavaler’ s “Nature and the Chapel Vaults at Ingolstadt: Structuralist and Other Perspectives.” together with the theories on ‘sublime’ (Burke, Kant, Schopenhauer,..) and ‘divine’.
Additional aspects such as communication and art will be added.
In this creative/academic presentation, one is encouraged to step inside and find inner peace, while encountering these places, as hypothesis is made in the field of community and improvement of the society that stems from the initial idea of reconnecting with ourselves in these spaces.
Cruising Musings: A Queer Ecology and the re/deterritorialisation of Nature and Environments (Lee Mann)
Eco-feminists and environmental justice advocates have long argued no environment, natural or urban, exists outside of socio-political systems including, gender, class and race. Historically, gender has informed our experience of and interaction with nature and environments and continues to do so today. A very clear example of this is the formation of American National Parks in the twentieth century, which served as a domain for men to act out hyper-masculine activity in response to the increasing presence of women in the labour market.
A queer ecology is another lens through which natural environments can be read; we can conceptualise nature through queer eyes. Cruising is a practice whereby primarily but not exclusively homosexual men seek out sex in public spaces--toilets, parks, and parking lots. I intend frame cruising as a socio-political act that re-territorialisatises public spaces traditionally reserved for heteronormative recreation. Gay men and queers, with the night as their disguise, lend public parks to live out desires and liberate sexualities. In doing so, a territory is mapped out through both ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ pollution: the excretion of sexual bodily fluids and the trampling of ‘desire paths’. Seeping through natural and urban infrastructures, these sexual acts intercept heteronormative spaces, planting seeds for the flourishing of a queer ecology. Cruising is a gesticulation that quietly dismantles a space formed without the consideration of the other.
Can’t We Just Get Oolong? Tasseography and Biocentrism in the Western World (Wibecka Oliver)
Despite being one of the oldest practices in the world, divination is widely ignored by many scholars and theologians, dismissed as ‘mumbo jumbo’ or overlooked due to a perceived lack of scientific value (Silver, 2018). Tasseography in particular remains a practice that has persisted from Ancient Greece into the modern world, though is largely neglected by academics. Better understood today as tea-leaf reading, prognostication through tasseography focuses on interpreting patterns in residual organic materials such as tea, coffee or wine.
Rather than rejecting tasseography as a nonsensical practice, this presentation reexamines this form of divination through an environmental lens. Acknowledging the mythic nature of tasseography while still appreciating its value as a complex ecologically rooted process is essential. Removing inherent skepticism surrounding the possibility of divination and focusing instead on the larger symbolic relationships presented between the natural and divine, humanity and nature, new insight can be formed regarding this type of communication.
In particular this presentation explores how the ethical concept of biocentrism, in which value and significance extend to all living things, is represented through tasseographical predictions. Furthermore, it will be argued that tasseography can be understood as an involved visual (and bodily) experience grounded in biocentric values.
At War with Ourselves: Of Man and Nature in a Film (Karen Kristjansdottir)
There is no doubt that environmental issues have surfaced with increased force in the last years, months and even weeks. People seem to be waking up to, what some refer to as, the biggest challenges of our times. Today we can see flocks of children fighting for nature and climate causes all around the world, insisting on end to human’s bad treatment of the earth and climate. Theorists have for a long time contemplated on the relationship of man and nature and pop culture has been no exception in that. Last year, the Icelandic film Woman at War was premiered and it deals with this discourse, in a story of one woman’s warfare for the conservation of the environment. This study aims to briefly explore the relationship between man and nature, in the light of the film Woman at War (2018) by Benedikt Erlingsson and identify the reasons that drive the main character to onset a war and become an environmental activist, - or terrorist. It looks into the ways in which the visual representation and narrative can be connected to theories of appropriation and mourning. A couple of visual examples, frames from the film, are shown and analysed to support how these influences surface.
Appropriating Asterisms: Reexamining the Natural Contract Through Detritus (Austin LaGrone)
The use of trash as an artistic medium has a long and celebrated history going at least all the way back to the so-called degenerate artist Kurt Schwitters. Not surprisingly, contemporary artists continue to work with these found materials and in ways that often speak to biotic issues that arise in, and are explored through, Eco-Philosophy. This presentation will investigate Michel Serres’ demand for a “Natural Contract” and suggest that Gabriel Orozco’s art installation “Asterisms” at the Guggenheim can be read as isomorphic to the key ideas developed in Serres’ essay. Furthermore, this presentation will examine humanity’s appropriation of the world through lost or abandoned objects and argue that steering a course into the future must take into account and directly address the dynamics of both hard and soft pollution.
Perceiving the earth as a dynamic actor (Hanna Urich)
In this speech I discuss embodied perception through ‘attention economics’, approaching human attention as a resource. With the development of screen technology and social media, human  attention is becoming more valuable and consequently more exploited. Michel Serres calls semiotic  methods, such as adverts, of exploiting human attention ‘soft pollution’. When being exposed to clear advertising messages we are more likely to filter out the bodily impressions of the sensory world. Using eco-phenomenological theory I will argue how embodied perception can help us to reach an understanding for the earth as a dynamic actor as opposed to a silent and static backdrop. Our senses alone teach us that the earth is neither still nor mute; birdsong, thunderstorms and the smell of rain has the agency of affecting the human mind. By speaking about human attention as a limited resource I hope to highlight how adverts and algorithms can cause us to budget our attention and therefore limit our understanding of the sensory surroundings.

DAY 128: Chandelier by Sia
Album: 1000 Forms of Fear Release: July 4th, 2014 Genre: Electropop
There seems to be a climax regarding the ratio of commercial success to musical talent within a longer career of a remarkable singing talent. Too far before this climax and we have much more experimental content that is still in search of its voice, with the occasional diamond in the rough to surprise newer audiences. Too far after this climax and the music starts to become more processed and commercial, geared for the mainstream and losing the personal touch of smaller or independent releases. But that sweet spot right in the middle is the perfect balance, on the cusp of widespread recognition from the public on the shoulders of a song or album that still has the heart of what represents the artist as a whole. Chandelier is that climax for Sia, an artist who has had many studio releases before finally establishing herself as a breakout act. Beginning her career in her native Australia in 2003, her first two albums struggled establishing a following with a soulful piano oriented pop sound. Left with a desire to boost her potential, she relocated to New York City in 2005 to focus on perfecting her sound. Sia’s following two releases Some People Have REAL Problems and We Are Born branched out from a more reserved tone and allowed for Sia to let loose her singing voice from a more theatrical setting to full-blown pop star status thanks in part to a bustling new environment. This approach helped Sia, a then up-and-coming new artist nearing a breakthrough, reach levels of fame that started to approach critical mass. This would be the first instance of Sia’s distaste for fame and popularity, as her increasing image led her to a hiatus where she would take a backseat in the music industry and write songs for other artists with an occasional feature. During her hiatus, Sia collaborated on a number of chart-topping songs including David Guetta’s Titanium and Flo Rida’s Wild Ones, which for better or worse only increased Sia’s notoriety during a time meant to downplay the spotlight. Inevitably, the culmination of these side jobs arrived in 2015 with the release of 1000 Forms of Fear, a monumental success in the modern age. Chandelier was the breakout single for Sia, leaving nothing on the table and absolutely slaying the boisterous high notes that shine in the chorus. 1000 Forms of Fear would also mark the beginning of Sia’s anonymous image in order to combat paparazzi tactics. Sia’s relationship with the public has been trying at best in her history, and with only more exposure to come in her commercially successful run, she has taken every measure to stay in control. "I'm trying to have some control over my image,” she says, “And I'm allowed to maintain some modicum of privacy. But also I would like not to be picked apart or for people to observe when I put on ten pounds or take off ten pounds or I have a hair extension out of place or my fake tan is botched. Most people don't have to be under that pressure, and I'd like to be one of them."

My-Search: The Bisexual Orientation
It took me a while to discover I was bisexual and truly accept myself for who I am. I have struggled with opening myself up to others and especially myself. Through my doubts and confusion, my mom not knowing about my sexuality as a whole, and even questioning life itself I realized that it's OKAY to accept and love myself for who I am. Though, upon my discovery I had questioned, why didn't I come to learning about myself sooner? I had concluded that there were many reasons why. The first reason was my mom not being open with me about sexuality and sexual identity. Secondly, I didn't know that identifying as bisexual was even possible. Lastly, I did not know that confusion of sexual identity is very common in adolescence in young adult years. These three reasons have always had me questioning, what could've been done to help me grow and become who I am today much sooners? As well as how can I share my belief that sexuality and sexual identity have to be discussed more? In my research I have explored more into each reason why I didn't discover and accept myself sooner and how I could help others on the matter. Sexual identity and sexuality should be discussed more as a whole, positively and supportingly with young adults.
After concluding my first reason why I did not accept myself sooner, which was my mom not being open with me about sexuality and sexual identity, I looked to the internet for answers. I asked 'why are parents not open with talking about sexuality?', or in key words, 'parents', 'adolescence' and 'sexuality'. I wanted to know if all parents are this way and if sexuality and even LGBTQ issues are talked about in the home. I found a newspaper article titled Breaking the Silence With LGBT Teens, written by Dr. Alexis Drutchas, a family medicine physician, who stated, ”Conversations regarding gender, sexuality, and mental health continue to be relatively taboo” and “what we do not have is consistent, open, supportive dialogue around these issues in our homes, schools, places of worship, or our health care settings.” Which is true. The fact is that these issues are popularized in the media and seem to be talked about more as a society yet is it really positively affecting our youth in their homes and schools? Places adolescence should feel safe and welcomed? These questions were a setback because the conversation obviously is still needed to be talked about more. Then Dr. Alexis Drutchas continued about how it may not be the parents fault completely. That it is also health care providers who should be opening the conversation. I agree with her statement because having a third party would allow less confrontation between parent and their young adult as well as have this issue discussed more regularly.
The second reason to why I didn't accept myself sooner was the unknowing that the bisexual identity had existed. Before I had accepted myself for who I am I had questioned whether or not there were more sexual orientations than being heterosexual and homosexual. I searched through many articles and vlogs, or youtube video blogs, among the LGBTQ youtube community. I learned that in fact bisexuality did exist but it was just not that common to talk about. I then started to question if as a society was the bisexual identity cared about enough to bring up for regular discussion? Why was it not as represented as much as other sexual orientations? I had looked up the keywords 'bisexual' and 'bisexuality'. I had come across a surprising amount of articles but few answering my questions. I had finally come across an article called Bisexual: A Label With Layers, written by Michael Schulman, a New York Times writer. He had discussed the difficulties people face when identified as bisexual. He stated, “The stereotypes abound: bisexuals are promiscuous, lying or in denial. They are gay men who can't yet admit that they are gay, or ''lesbians until graduation,'' sowing wild oats before they find husbands.” I had realized bisexuals had gotten a bad wrap. It seems a lot of closeted homosexuals and people experimenting had used, and are still using, bisexual as a term to 'get away' with their curiosity or being unsure. It brings up the fact that people still judge other people and/or people still don't have enough self-confidence or reassurance that they can't admit who they are. It's unfair, however, for people and myself, who identify as bisexual to have to deal with prejudice attitudes and negative stereotypes that not only come from people masking who they are but are aimed against people who have done wrongful actions and aquit it with bisexual persons. Then Schulman goes on to say, ”That bisexuality is in fact more common than exclusively same-sex attraction” and that it's “conspicuous in popular culture”. I was surprised a bit to hear him state that bisexuality was conspicuous. Though some celebrities have come out as being bisexual and some popular television shows have shown a bisexual character, I would have to agree to disagree until I see more exposure of bisexuality as much as the other sexual orientations. Also since society and as people are changing bisexuality should be more openly and positively discussed.
The last reason why I did not accept myself sooner is because I did not know that other young adults were going through the same struggles as I was going through. Up until I turned 17 I was sure that my sexual identity was of heterosexual orientation because I had subjected myself and refused to go outside the hetero-norm. But I explored and discovered who I was. Yet this problem of confusion and being lost is still a major setback to adolescence and the youth of my generation. Yes, the LGBTQ community and some of society has become more accepting, aware, and have open arms to exploration and to kids who are coming out with different sexual orientations. However, the question that needs to be addressed then is how many adolescence youth feel they can be accepted? How can they come out to others and/ or explore who they are without feeling wrong about doing so or not accepted like I had felt? So I went to search the key words 'adolescence youth' and 'sexual orientation'. I found an article that was about how conversion therapy was used and how psychotherapy was 'effective' and can 'convert' someone from being other than heterosexual. It's disgusting to have to look back on a past less accepting than the present. Though there are still changes to be made, I say this is a step closer. The article is called The Right Therapy for the LGBT Youth, written by Stewart Adelson and Kyle Knight, both writers for the Washington Post. They stated,” Childhood and adolescence are crucial times for development, including of sexual orientation and gender identity” and that “youth need information, support and safe spaces to ask questions. Mental health professionals need the latitude to help them.” The focus now should be on helping the youth feel safe and supported. Whether it is through family, friends, therapy, counseling, and support groups. Awareness of an adolescence sexual orientation is needed to be successful in gaining a positive relationship with a young adult and respectively create a communication channel through which a young adult can effectively express their thoughts, experiences, interests and many other things.
After researching  and exploring more on the reasons why I didn't accept myself sooner I came to a broader sense that more discussion and communication is key to evolving how sexual identity and sexuality is talked about to young adult adolescence. I experienced more understanding and a bit more motivation to keep pressing for more discussion of sexual identity and sexuality whether it be in the home, at school, with friends and/or anywhere. I learned that my mom was not alone in preventing me to learn about myself and I have forgiven her because  sexual identity and sexuality was not discussed with her. I also learned that I must keep fighting for bisexual representation and diminish any negative stereotypes and prejudices anyone has against bisexual persons. Bisexuality is not a phase but acceptance that people and myself can love and accept both genders/sexes. The path now is still to be worked on to pave a loving and accepting future for young adult adolescence and anyone who feels lost or not accepted. I am bisexual and confident to say that other people are as well.

Tumblr media
Where are you from? How did you get into creative work and what is your impetus for creating?
I’m originally from Tehran, Iran but grew up in Northern Virginia after the revolution and have spent the last 20 years in Northern California. I basically stayed on the same latitude line and kept moving West.
Tumblr media
The beginnings of exploring my creativity with greater commitment took place when I went to art school in pursuit of an MFA in graphic design from the Savannah College of Art and Design in the late 90s. Designing and making things were initially a means of making a living and choosing a vocation. Now I see that my creativity is in fact the language that I speak most intuitively, and is the way that I communicate and connect with the world.
Tumblr media
Tell me about your current/upcoming show/exhibit/book/project and why it’s important to you. What do you hope people get out of your work?
I create new work on an ongoing basis whether I’m working on a commission or not, but am not currently working towards having a show. Being in the practice of art making is akin to playing an instrument. You have to be in the practice of your craft, in order to fully understand it, while striving for personal excellence. That pursuit is a process and not an end point. Making work as an ongoing process helps me stay close to what I’m making, so that I can understand what it wants to become, especially when that becoming doesn’t have a precedent.
Tumblr media
I want my work to invoke curiosity, hope and accessibility for the viewer. I feel like I create art for people. Not for “some people,” but for people who are curious and hopeful. I’m very deliberate about not creating work that’s an extension of angst or my ego, because while I am the maker, it’s not about me.
Tumblr media
Does collaboration play a role in your work—whether with your community, artists or others? How so and how does this impact your work?
Collaboration factors into my work when I’m working on a commission for a designer or a patron. I use a similar framework to when I’m working on branding projects with my clients. I want to understand the details of the story that we’re trying to tell, because it’s not just about aesthetics. It’s about using visual elements to craft a narrative that stirs certain emotions. Collaboration also factors into my work when working with framers or installers of my art. I usually have a sense of what I have in mind, but definitely ask for the opinions of those whom I respect, to get their thoughts. Working with others guides a path that often surprises me in a positive way. I like when designers push me to elevate something that we create together for their client. That there’s space to make several attempts at exploring and trying things out before committing to a direction that feels like what it’s supposed to be. Then it feels like a shared “win.”
Tumblr media
Considering the political climate, how do you think the temperature is for the arts right now, what/how do you hope it may change or make a difference?
I think the arts exist within their own niche throughout the strands of historical time. Sometimes people misinterpret art as an element of luxury or something that’s not a “need.” And yet I would ask, can you live an enriched life without stories, inspiration, hope and joy? I can’t and so I create art that is an extension of those aspirations. Specifically in regards to politics, I feel like it’s a voice that’s so loud and divisive within our current culture, that it steamrolls over many things that I value far more, like the arts and culture. Politics is driven by big money and power, while the arts and culture are driven by passion and the heart. These two hold very different spaces and create very different things. I do think that the political climate and its divisive nature have tempered certain voices of creative expression, while activating others. I’m especially sensitive to the disproportionate representation and compensation of women in the arts. It feels very, 5000 years ago and is driven by the patriarchy.
Tumblr media
Artist Wanda Ewing, who curated and titled the original LFF exhibit, examined the perspective of femininity and race in her work, and spoke positively of feminism, saying “yes, it is still relevant” to have exhibits and forums for women in art; does feminism play a role in your work?
Feminism is foundational to my work, but as it relates to my definition of it. I think of feminism as equality between genders specifically within the ecosystems of power, politics, compensation and opportunities. If the work of women in the arts was endorsed and financed within forums over the next 100 years, we still wouldn’t be fully caught up with the thousands of years of having hidden, dismissed, and undervalued the efforts of women in the arts historically. The disproportionate representation of male artists compared to women is on full display at every major museum of the world that showcases both genders. It’s so blatant that I found myself at the information desk at the Victoria and Albert museum two summers ago to ask, “Why don’t you represent more female artists?” The response I got back from the lovely young Italian woman at the desk was, “This is the way it’s always been.” For a moment I couldn’t believe that we were both willing to accept that in the moment. Her answer was grounded in patriarchy and I believe wholeheartedly in meritocracy, so we definitely were not in alignment in terms of our understanding.
Tumblr media
My feminism shows up in my work daily by virtue of my commitment to my craft and what I consider my job. Regardless of what the political climate consists of or how pervasive the patriarchy impacts my relationship to the world, I will show up almost every day to do my work and when I am no longer alive, my work will hopefully be an ongoing conversation that will be had with people that I will never have met.
Ewing’s advice to aspiring artists was “you’ve got to develop the skill of when to listen and when not to;” and “Leave. Gain perspective.”  What is your favorite advice you have received or given?
Some of the best advice that I received was from my high school cross-country coach who was also my AP Biology teacher. He said, “You race the way you practice.” Meaning that you have to show up for the work and do it with discipline and love so that you’re trying your best to move towards a space of individual excellence. That my expectations need to be matched by my efforts and the responsibility of the space between the two resides within me, void of excuses and external forces.
Tumblr media
Along similar lines, my favorite quote regarding the arts from an artist who used to be a friend and passed away a few months ago is, “The artist does not simply hold a mirror to society. If the world now is greedy, the artist must be generous. If there is war and hate, he must be peaceful and loving. If the world is insane, he must offer sanity, and if the world is becoming a void, he must fill it with his soul.” -Russell Chatham
