Summary: To say the least, Hange's last month of pregnancy turned out a little bumpier than what Levi would would have liked it to be.

Notes:  I know I've been writing a lot of fluff lately but yeah, just me coping with this being my first ever New Year's stuck at home with our family not together this year. Sorry for my French but Fuck Covid.

The house was quiet.

But that's how Levi wanted it. Hange was eight months pregnant after all. When she was carrying a fragile growing mini person inside her, he would rather she stayed quiet anyway. The peace and calm of the household was an improvement from the clack of rock to wood and her humming. It was a sign at least that Hange was finally getting the well needed rest that came with carrying an extra human.

But it was just a little too quiet. Too quiet for it to ever be comfortable for Levi. Levi had to note that it was past noon and Hange should have been up, playing around with whatever rocks she had on the workbench or at least sitting on the sofa reading a random book from the bookshelf in the dining room.

She probably stayed up late last night. Levi thought to himself. That thought was quickly shot down when Levi recalled that she had actually slept much earlier than him.

Of course, she's eight months pregnant. Levi attempted to scramble for other reasons for that silence as he started to give in to the nagging worry. When Hange was home, she was always making noise. Levi found it almost eerie that the noise levels were down to when Hange was out for work. All he could hear were the clatter of pans as he placed them on the sink and the simmer of the fire as he started to prepare lunch.

After I finish making lunch I'll check on her. Levi promised himself.

Levi had been up since five and had not entered the room again since then. It was for good reason. Hanger was notably crankier than usual, particularly in the mornings. Carrying an extra human to term had her having rough days every day and Levi just wanted to be a little more careful with his cards.

He turned on the radio by the kitchen window. Having an extra voice at least even if it wasn't Hange worked to alleviate some of that discomfort. He had started on reorganizing one of the cupboards when the radio whirred to life.

Hearing the man on the radio was oddly comforting. He never did leave the house as often as Hange so the radio had been his anchor to real life. With Hange home more often, he never needed to turn it on, Hange always had her own personal talkshow going on when she wasn’t asleep. Either that or he was too busy worrying about her to even have time to focus on the happenings that day.

For the first time in so long, he had the time. Enjoy it while you can. Levi told himself as he started to ponder what the news of the day would be. Having lived a long life constantly being chased in the underground that eventually evolved into a life killing man eaten giants, Levi found listening to the societal problems that plagued Paradis almost calming.

He had been dubbed ‘humanity’s strongest soldier’ and had been fighting man eating beasts and preventing the fall of humanity for a huge part of his life. Yet at present, most problems that made their way to Paradis were at least solvable by the average conscripted soldier or the average office worker. More than half the time, no one was actually in danger of dying. A significant improvement from the Paradis he grew up in.

Listening to the happenings on the radio, he was reminded of the joys of retirement. He indulged himself by listening to the last few parts of a radio drama and news on preparations for the fireworks festival that night.

The world is so peaceful. Levi had been daring enough to think that statement to himself.

“Breaking news!” It was as if the radio had sentience and read his mind, wanting to prove Levi wrong as if to say ‘the world will never be completely peaceful.’ “We just received word of a hostage situation in one of the warehouses in the Southern port.”

A wave of panic ended up running through him. It could have been from the tone of the reporter or Levi’s own instincts. Calm down. You’re not a soldier anymore. This isn’t your problem. It wasn’t at all new for Levi to react like that internally. He had an unnaturally strong sense of urgency having lived a life of danger for too long. He willfully brushed it off and attempted to focus instead on cutting the vegetables for the soup he was making for lunch.

“More information is coming in…”

Having spent most of his days alone in the house with nothing but a radio for a companion, Levi had mastered the art of multitasking, being able to pick up all the details of the radio article over the sound of the pots and pans, the sound of plates being stacked or the whistle of the kettle.

A gang car jacked one of the buses on the way out of the Southern port.

Gang holds hostage in the port fireworks which were slated to be sent to the capital for Paradis’ first ever New Years Celebration...

The fireworks were ordered more than a year ago…

Levi knew enough at least to understand what would have pushed people to steal them. Hange had mentioned it once during one of her rambles. She had been the one who had suggested they buy fireworks from Marley and celebrate New Years more than a year ago. It was apparently a highly anticipated festivity every year in Marley and having been so excited at the idea of celebrating it in Paradis, Hange went overboard with the organization. They had sent people to Marley to train with handling fireworks and had gone over multiple displays before deciding on one, which ended up being one of the more expensive options.

But it will be beautiful. Those words echoed once again in Levi’s head. He recalled seeing stars in her eyes as she said it.

Eventually Armin had taken over and with Hange’s hand out of the project, Levi had forgotten about it until he heard the details of the hostage situation over the radio. I wonder what Armin’s doing about it. A food for thought he reflected on while he prepared the ingredients for boiling.

“The police are assessing the situation as we speak.” Levi was aware they couldn’t give the exact details, the hostage takers could be listening in.

Another report came in a few seconds later. "The escaped hostages have confirmed the hostage takers do not have a radio on site. No chance of them listening in." 

Levi found himself silently commending the escaped hostages for noting such a small detail. He hadn’t expected civilians to be that sharp especially in such a stressful situation.

“We escaped through the vents with one brave woman’s help but she had to stay behind.”

“How many are left inside the warehouse?”

“Just her.”

“Couldn’t she escape with you?”

“No sir. She doesn’t fit.”

“Doesn’t fit?"

“She looked like she was at least eight months pregnant.”

A pregnant woman in a hostage situation? Levi’s ears perked up at that. His thoughts flew to whoever that woman’s poor husband could have been. He had his own pregnant wife after all so he was quick to sympathize. Despite not believing in a god, he found himself sending prayers to that phantom husband. I hope someone at least informed him.

Levi kept his attention on the radio news as he mixed the ingredients and the spices for the soup.

“We have to get her out soon then.”

“She said she’d be fine. She even called the hostage takers amateurs.”

Levi was familiar with hostage situations though to know it was in their interest to keep their hostages alive. When taking the risk though, losing meant losing a life and Levi found himself sympathizing with whoever was left. Maybe I should call Armin? After I wake up Hange.

“But she could end up dead.”

“She said they wouldn’t.. On the off chance they did, she could defend herself.” Despite having just come out of a hostage situation and seeming concerned about a pregnant companion they had left behind, the woman talking on the radio seemed convinced that the pregnant woman could take care of herself.

How can an eight month pregnant woman defend herself though? Levi was starting to get a little more interested in the identity of the pregnant woman. There were two possibilities, she was a pregnant woman with a screw loose in her brain or she was an actual genius, Maybe he could ask Hange to ask Armin about it and they could learn a thing or two from her.

“She used to be in the military… And apparently had dealt with worse situations before."

So she was from the military? The military was a small community and Levi was sure he should know who it was. Was anyone pregnant though… Other than Hange?

Levi had racked his brain for a few seconds considering all the possibilities. Except one.

He did not know how many minutes he had spent considering the other possibilities before moving on to the exception. Yet that possibility was just outrageous. So outrageous that Levi had to ask Hange even if it meant waking her up from her nap.

Sorry for interrupting your sleep Hange, I just heard about an eight month pregnant woman who used to be part of the military and got taken hostage in a warehouse by the port. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t you. Levi rehearsed his lines quickly as he made his way to the bedroom. It sounded ridiculous the second time he repeated it to himself. At that point though, it seemed worth it.

Levi’s heart started to beat faster as he entered the room, he could almost hear it. It could have been from the fear of waking up that lump on the other side of the bed or the fear of finding out it was just a pillow.

He never found out where that fear came from. It turned out the pillow was just a lump. Before Levi could even process his bodies’ reaction to the suspense and that harsh realization, his body went into survival mode. It came as a torrent of unintelligible emotions reminiscent of his fights against the beast titan and the invasion of Marley.

Just like it did then, his survival mode switched on and his instincts took over. Levi’s body was moving much faster than his brain. He called a taxi to take him to the port.

It was an option ten times more expensive than the shuttle but the price was the last thing on his mind.

                                          Bite

The crowds on the port were large and Levi was disappointed to find out that many of the people there were uniformed policemen. He pushed his way through the crowd clutching one of the men in the front by their collar. “Why the hell are you not moving? You probably outnumber the hostage takers at this rate!”

“But sir… we don’t have orders. And there’s one more civilian inside.” The uniformed policeman who had answered Levi seemed a little too unsure and inexperienced that just listening to him made Levi miss his comrades in the survey corps all the more. That man looked like he had never fought in his life.

“Fuck this, I’m going in.”

“Sir are you sure? I think those men inside are armed with some very high end guns. We can never be too careful.”

Armed with what? Levi had been pitted against guns, thunder spears, man-eating giants and the king of all these founding titans. Despite the big ham the policeman was making those weapons out to be, Levi was not nervous at all.

He ran towards the building and in that few seconds vacillated between breaking through the window and bursting through the door. He had to act fast. Behind him, he could hear soldiers and policemen screaming at him to stay back and if he allowed himself a brief moment to stop and consider the situation, they might actually catch up.

Levi took a glance at one of the windows as he ran. The guns were on the table. Their guard was down. Levi found himself all the more disappointment at the policemen as he did. How the fuck is anybody not noticing that.

He crashed through the window where he had seen the guns on the table.

He never gave them time to pick up the guns. Even during that small moment Levi had allowed them as he took stock of the situation, they did not even attempt to dive for a weapon.

Levi and Hange did not have many things that could have served as a weapon in the house. Having only allowed himself a few seconds to get ready, Levi used the time to turn off the stove and cover the pot he had used to cook the soup. The only thing that he had managed to grab then was the vegetable knife that sat on the board he had used to cut vegetables that morning.

Levi though had worked with knives for years. He had also mastered the art of looking menacing even with the most mundane household objects as weapons. Even if he didn’t look menacing and the five hostage takers weren’t frozen on the spot, Levi was sure he still had enough agility left inside him to slit all their throats before they could shoot the gun. Preserving life had always been part of his principles though and he found himself giving the men the luxury to talk.

“Please! Don’t kill us!” One of the men begged as he fell to his knees. The others soon followed suit.

“You take hostages and you expect us not to attack?”

“We just needed money. Just give us money for the fireworks and we’ll be off your backs.” The first man who had kneeled explained. He looked to be their leader.

Levi kept his eye on the weapons on the table as he listened to the men. “This is a crime. I should be turning you in.” He had expected that to at least provoke the men. Alas, he had expected too much from them. All they did was kneel on the floor in defeat, their eyes downcast.

He approached the guns on the table and he could hear the men whimper as he did.

“The guns are broken,” one man said nervously. “We couldn’t get them to shoot.”

Of course you won’t get them to shoot. They need to be loaded first. Levi knew those guns too well. They were the guns Kenny and his police used after all. He had been at the end of that muzzle enough times to last a lifetime.

These hostage takers are amateurs. Levi had to admit, Hange probably would have been fine in this situation even if he didn’t show up.

“Where are your hostages?” Levi did not need to focus on the guns. Even if the men dove for them, Levi was sure they wouldn’t be able to shoot them.

Levi heard a kick behind him and one of the men nervously made his way beside Levi. “Over here… er sir.”

He was led to a dark room at the end of the hall. He kicked the door open, not bothering to wait for the man next to him to get the key.

The door opened to a room with many empty chairs lined up, one of them occupied by someone, someone Levi recognized almost instantly by the large belly and the fact that he had been seeing that face everyday for the past five years of his life.

Hange was there, sitting on a chair her hands tied behind her. As she looked up at them, Levi could see she had a face of overexaggerated terror for a while. For that split second, she was faking it. Levi had known her enough to know that. Within that second, it had twisted into something else, guilt and possibly actual terror.

“Levi… it’s nice to see you here,” She said. Levi had been with her enough to see that was the terror she exuded when she knew she had done something wrong.

“Why are you here? Aren’t you supposed to be at home?” Levi kept his voice cool, calm, feigning an expression of fake surprise. He was sure Hange would see through it. In fact, he wanted her to see through it.

“I would have been home by noon.”

“Answer the fucking question.”

Hange avoided his gaze. “The fireworks. I wanted to make sure they got to the capital safely.”

“You are an eight month pregnant woman on fucking leave. Why the fuck can’t you leave this to Armin.” He asked in the form of a statement. A statement he very much wanted her to reflect on.

“Armin and Mikasa are on a business trip to Marley. Besides, these are the expensive fireworks I ordered,” Hange explained. A shitty explanation which Levi refused to buy.

“The expensive fireworks Paradis ordered. We’re going home.” He approached Hange, ready to cut up the ropes behind her only to see there was nothing tying her to the chair. Of course. The others had gotten away. And the only person who could have helped them was Hange.

He noticed their means of escape in the form of a vent. It was closed yet, somehow Levi could tell it had been disturbed by its relative cleanliness when compared to the room that was covered in a layer of dust.

For a second, he had considered going out through there. The layer of dust and the large belly of Hange only made it a not too appealing option. “We’re going out through the front door and----”

And we’re leaving the rest to the police. They should be competent enough to arrest them at least. Levi would have wanted to say. That was until he heard the sound of gunshots.

Not the gunshots from the old military police guns. Those are the police guns.

“We surrender!”

The next thing he heard was an explosion then unfamiliar pops.

“The fireworks!” It was Hange who had answered that question of what that popping was. From seeing her crestfallen face, Levi was sure she had not intended to answer his question.

“We’re going out through the vent then.” He pulled Hange from her seat, making a silent apology to the baby inside her. “Can you hold your stomach in?” A dumb question to ask his pregnant wife but Levi was desperate.

It turned out though she didn’t need to squeeze her way through. The vent had been big enough for her to fit through without having to hold her stomach in.

And Hange should have known that. Hange wasn’t an idiot. In fact, Levi was sure she had better spatial reasoning skills than him, seeing as she had been in charge of the recent infrastructural developments over the years.

When he had carried her far away enough from the fire and the consequent blast, he had started to understand why she had been so adamant not to leave in the first place.

“The fireworks!” Hange was kneeling on the grass, a safe distance away from the blast and sobbing. “We paid so much for this Levi… This was supposed to be our first New Years celebration…” The intelligible words devolved into babble and Levi wondered whether that kind of emotional stress would be good for the baby.

At least, the hostage takers had gotten out safely. Levi thought, a desperate attempt to see light in the situation.

                                           Bite

“So let me get this straight. You stayed behind on purpose?” It had been a good few hours since the incident and it still took Levi some effort to talk to her calmly. Levi understood at least that he had a duty not to cause her any more stress especially right after what had happened.

She had shut herself in the room for a good hour or so as soon as they had gotten back. Levi had made sure to check on her a few times since then since she was almost as quiet as that pillow that had pretended to be Hange that morning. By evening, her face was still red and her eyes swollen.

To Levi’s relief, she had replied, a significant improvement from her catatonic state. “We were looking forward to some grand festivities and those fireworks were expensive.…” Hange mentioned the cost of the fireworks and Levi was sure that amount was the fund of the survey corps for one year.

With the price of the fireworks, he was somehow starting to sympathize at least. “You sure we don’t need to go to the hospital?” He asked, his voice a little gentler.

“No, it’s okay I’m fine.”

Levi did believe her. She had little to no scratches on her and she was still walking normally at least. It was her almost catatonic state which troubled him. He could give that until the next day. “We still have next year for fireworks,” he said, an attempt to comfort her.

A moment later, he started to hear the familiar popping. “Is that fireworks? I thought they got destroyed?”

“Yeah, those are the normal fireworks. The ones I wanted to see were the expensive ones I ordered last year.”

So we had fireworks already? Levi found himself moving to the kitchen mechanically, with the one goal of making himself a cup of tea. If he allowed himself any emotion then, he probably could have strangled Hange at that moment. “If you wanna see the fireworks, you can go down.” Just another precaution, he set for himself so at least he was a safe distance from her

The kitchen was near the window and although they were in one of the upper floors, he should be able to hear Hange’s footsteps as long as the windows were open and he concentrated enough.

The tea was calming and it kept him more alert to Hange’s footsteps. Just in case she did something else stupid. He wasn’t at all feeling trusting that particular night.

He had expected to hear footsteps, leather on wood or cement. For a few minutes, that was what he was hearing.

A few minutes later, he heard something he hadn’t expected to hear at all. In fact it was something he probably wouldn’t have had to listen closely to hear.

A loud squeak then a surprised scream from Hange.

                                          Bite

The last place Levi would have expected to spend New Years was in the hospital.

He had expected Hange to have done things during her pregnancy which would have ended up with a hospital visit. Never in his life would he have thought that it would have been from a rat bite and it would have been eight months into her pregnancy during New Years day.

“I tried to sit on the dumpster because it had the best view and there was a rat there...” Hange explained to the doctor from her bed in the emergency room.

Levi had stayed silent as Hange went into detail. He tried to tune it out himself, knowing ‘bitten by a rat’ was all he needed to hear for his whole body to shudder. Being drenched in titan’s blood seemed like a better alternative.

“I recommend you stay overnight. We’re uhh… going to have to talk to some doctors in Marley about this. I don’t think we’ve ever had a case of a woman getting bitten by a rat in her third term. We’ll have the nurse set you up with a room.” With that, the doctor left and it was just Hange and Levi together in that little corner of the emergency room.

Hange lay back on the hospital bed, her belly making a giant hill on top of her. It was so unnaturally large that Levi realized he wouldn’t be too surprised if the baby came out at any moment.

“You know Levi, I think he enjoyed today. He was kicking my belly back in the warehouse,” Hange quipped playfully as she rubbed her belly. Levi noted that the line that connected to Hange’s hand must have been some sort of painkiller or sleep drought. Hange’s smiling face was a brief respite from her crying face that afternoon, even if it was medicine-induced.

“Or maybe he thought you were a complete idiot.”

“You know… When I heard the window crash, the baby kicked harder… I think he knew daddy was coming to save us.”

“Or maybe he knew mommy didn’t need saving after all.” Levi returned her playful smile with a glare.

“Hey, you had fun. It was just like the old days...”

Fun?  Levi wouldn’t have used that word at all. Getting shot at and being almost eaten on a regular basis wasn’t fun. Not knowing when you would die wasn’t fun. As Hange had mentioned the word ‘old days,’ Levi did start to realize he had been a little disappointed to see the men hadn’t shot at him.

He put a hand to his forehead. “Do I actually miss fighting?” He pressed harder into his forehead as if that action was enough to push some sanity back into his brain. No one should be missing a war. “Hey Hange, do you miss it?” He wanted to search for some assurance at least that he wasn’t the only one slightly insane.

He looked back at Hange to see the latter had dozed off, her face fixed into a warm comfortable smile, her hand resting on her belly.

He didn’t know how long he had been staring. It could have been minutes or hours. His trance though had been broken by one greeting of “Happy New Year!” then a few soft cheers and some light clapping. Levi wasn’t too worried that Hange would wake up. She looked to be in a deep sleep.

Levi put his hand on hers, and even with one hand beneath his and the belly, he still felt it, a light small kick. He’s coming out soon.

He leaned close to her ear, taking in the rare sounds of her relaxed breathing before he whispered his own greeting. “Happy New Year… Next year we’ll see the fireworks together, all three of us.”

It was a promise only he would have remembered. But it was a promise he vowed to keep.

Meet Alessia Vivienne Faust ; Her name literally means Defender of Life. She is currently 24 years old and a bouncer at Eden’s. 

She was born on October 30 and is the result of a rather short affair between Matthew Faust and infamous French ballerina dancer Lucille LeRoux. 

Regardless of how short it was their actions resulted in Alessia. When Lucille first learned of her pregnancy she was beyond frightened and more overly worried of what it would do to her career. 

She instantly thought about aborting the baby and on the day of the operation Lucille was confronted by Matthew himself. Feeling ambushed by his appearance the woman came clean in telling the Italian her unborn child is his. Outraged by her actions he kept a calm look and simply made a deal with Lucille: carry the child to full term and then hand the baby over to him. All expenses will be paid for the woman’s troubles plus more. Without a second thought to it the ballerina accepted this. 

The entire pregnancy was long to Lucille and came quick to growing tired of it, especially watching the other dancers from the sidelines, but she stayed throughout the pregnancy for the money. It was a lot and Lucille couldn’t pass it up. 

Soon enough the time came and Lucille gave birth and no one was by her side (Matthew was on a plane). At first she refused to look at her daughter and just allowed her newborn to be laid in her crib. The French finally gazed upon her daughter when the newborn couldn’t stop crying and no nurse was coming to her aide to sooth the infant – and you know what? Lucille fell in love. 

When Matthew arrived to the hospital to take what was rightfully his the Italian came to see the hospital room empty. No Lucille, no newborn daughter. This was the result of how Lucille ended up with a hit on her from the Italian mafia. 

She used the money he had given her prior to the birth and ran away. Lucille created a new identity for herself and moved to London. There she thrived as an artist who resided in a old fire station. The place was big enough just for her and little Alessia. Plus, the art work they would create together. 

As you all very well know all good things come to an end and Lucille’s actions quickly caught up to her. It was Halloween and Alessia had just turned five years old and was dressed as a ballerina - a nod to her mother’s former profession. She had went trick or treating with her next door neighbor and their kids, the night went off perfectly until Alessia came home. 

The ballerina child found her mother lying in the bathtub filled with water and her wrists slit so deep with a ‘suicide’ note on the sink. It was a nightmare that she forever will remember unlike most of that night. One moment she stood over the corpse and the next Alessia was in the police station an hour later covered in a mixture of water and blood. The next she remembered was a police officer wrapping a blanket around her with exciting news. “We have dialed your father and he is on his way to get you.” is what the office said. Never before had anyone spoke to Alessia about her father other than Lucille and all she would say about him is he was a charismatic business man. 

Little did Alessia know is the officer who informed her of this was on the payroll of the Italian mafia and was the very same man who murdered Lucille, but yet he didn’t act like a cold hearted killer at least not to the child. The last thing Alessia remembered of that night was meeting Matthew Faust for the first time and ditched the ballerina costume. 

Over the next few years Alessia quickly changed or more so showed more of her brute personality Lucille always kept in check. She acted out at school, but mainly against those who were bullies or she deemed they deserved it. 

The bastard daughter doted on her father constantly and loved him even more when she felt a rage against her mother for ending her life early. There was nights where Alessia expressed her thoughts of the anger she felt to Matthew. “Wasn’t I enough?”, “How could she? I - I thought she loved me.” Then the truth came to light of Lucille’s true reaction to learning of her pregnancy and how she wished to end it before Matthew told her a little white lie and said Lucille had a change of heart. He twisted the words around to make Lucille more of the bad guy and it worked like a charm. 

The anger she felt Alessia turned it into drive of what her mother is missing out on from her actions. While she caused a lot of fights in school and protected those who cannot protect themselves, Alessia somehow managed to excel in school and managed to graduate in the top ten percent. 

By the end of the summer Alessia moved to New York and attended private college institute for a business degree. She wanted to be useful to the Italian mafia when needed and what better way then getting this degree? 

Though there was something missing from Alessia’s life -- ADVENTURE. She still attended school, yes, but when not in school she would pull off some of the craziest stunts that involved parkour among many other daring things. All everyone knows is she has scars on her to prove it. 

And after almost four years in school, half way to achieving her Bachelor’s degree Alessia up and left. The need to see the world and for all it’s glory finally caught up to her and she set out to see. Of course she remained loyal to her family and often helped them out while living in Italy for a while. 

With nears stirring in Chicago of what is going on, Alessia decided she can get her fill of action back home and left Italy. 

Personality;; Alessia is an impulsive woman and is always put’s her family before herself. She does have a soft caring side though it is hardly shown to those outside the Italians. Alessia has very powerful protective instincts. She cannot stand to sit back and see people get hurt, always trying to do something to help whenever possible, even if for a complete and total stranger. She is extraordinarily devoted to helping innocent people and protecting the Fausts. Now without being said, Alessia is very sarcastic and a sharp tongue at times. She is always ready for a comeback when someone say something to her in a negative manner of the sorts.

America vs. American Women

There is currently a war being waged on the women in this country. It's being waged in a number of ways by a multitude of people, for reasons that are various and, at times, nearly inexplicable. Those reasons are a rant-session unto their own. What is clear, to anyone who is even remotely "woke" to female issues at this point, is that the war is vicious, sometimes literally violent, and we are losing. For those who are not aware of what life is like when you are being-an-American-female-in-2017, allow me to enlighten you.

Biologically born women are the only people capable of having babies. Shocking, I know. This is not, however, a situation that women come into on their own. As much as many women would love to be able to do away with men completely (a desire well-earned by the male species in this country), semen is still a necessity for insemination. This means men are still, at least cursorily, necessary to create babies. One would think that this would make it so that men would have some level of sympathy for women who are bringing new screaming urchins into society, yet the overwhelmingly male legislatures that run this country keep proving that this isn't the case.

There is no legal standard for paid maternity leave in this country. While the Family Medical Leave Act requires that mothers be given time off, that time off isn't required to be paid. For those who work full-time, or have employers that grant part-time employees sick leave or vacation time, this frequently means coming back to work with few to no sick days left and no vacation time to speak of, as all of it will have been used to guarantee a paycheck following a baby's birth. For those who work part-time for employers who do not grant any sort of paid time off to part-time employers, the amount of time that can be taken isn't determined by medical necessity, but by financial capability. This means mothers may be returning to work not just before the baby is ready for daycare, but before the woman herself is even physically fit for it.

For those who are screaming in their heads "but paternity leave," the "physically fit for it" aspect of pregnancy and birth is why the paternity leave temper tantrum can suck my big toe. I feel for dads who want to spend time with their new tot, and I want them to be able to do that. More so, though, I want to know that my new-mom friends aren't coming to work when their bodies are literally, medically, unready to do so. Until we've accomplished a working world that lets women heal properly, without forfeiting their paychecks, dads who can't take time off work to see their babies are just going to have to wait a little while longer. Because, frankly, few things are harder on the body than a pregnancy. The hormones are insane. The weight gain, if large, is rough on your joints. The weight loss, if you're that sick, can make recovery that much harder. Assuming you have a vaginal birth, you are looking at days to weeks of discomfort while your body attempts to knit itself back together. If they cut the baby out of you, you're literally recovering from a surgery that involved cutting through some of the strongest muscles in the human body, and pulling another human out.

But sure. Be back at work in six weeks, ready to keep on, keeping on, as though the movie "Alien" didn't just happen in that hospital room.

Now, to add insult to injury, they have turned these pregnancies that are completely necessary for the continuation of our species, into a "pre-existing" condition. If you have ever had a baby, and particularly if that baby was delivered by c-section, insurance companies could soon be handed the option to deny you coverage. Even if you can get coverage, don't even dream of getting pregnant while using that medical coverage. With "pregnancy" no longer considered an essential service that insurance companies should cover, there's a chance women in some states will be completely unable to find insurance coverage for this insanely expensive but, again, necessary-for-the-continuation-of-the-species, medical "condition."

Given that male politicians clearly don't care much for pregnant women, you would think they would have a vested interest in keeping women from getting pregnant. But, no. Not so much.

States all across the union have seen bills designed to completely eradicate abortion come across their legislative steps. The same legislators who don't want to spend any money taking care of mothers or their babies, also want to ensure that women become mothers whether they are ready for it or not. We have seen 20-week abortion bans, 13-week abortion bans, bans on abortions done because of birth defects, and attempted bans on all abortions, even those needed because a woman was raped or because the pregnancy is a product of incest. When legislators fail to restrict abortion itself, they instead go after the doctors, the buildings, or the funding, all in an attempt to prove how very much they "love" women and how "concerned" they are about their well-being.

Before my pro-life "friends" (not really, because if you believe women are incubators, we're definitely not friends) start pitching temper-tantrums about irresponsible sluts who can't keep their legs closed, I would suggest a trip to a local library and some actual research. Pull your fucking head out of your Fox News hole and go find some real statistics to work with, because the average abortion in this country is had by a middle-class, married, white woman, because the family knows they will not be able to maintain their current lifestyle if they have another baby. The average abortion provides the woman who had it, and their family, with relief and with the ability to continue living their life in a way that they are financially equipped to do. In short, pro-life person who is angry, get the fuck over yourself and, until you're ready to be completely celibate despite being married, stop demanding it of other people. Fucking assholes.

"Put it up for adoption!" the asshole says. Have you looked at our social welfare system? It's a fucking nightmare. Do you really think it can withstand the addition of any more children? Besides, putting a baby up for adoption still requires carrying it to term and delivering it. Return to the start of this article, the portion regarding the effect these things have on a woman's body, and tell me again how "easy" it is to just pop that fucker out and hand it someone else. NO.

Well, in a land where babies aren't supposed to be born but women aren't supposed to have abortions, obviously birth control must be easy to get, right? And again, wrong.

Up until the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies weren't required to cover any form of birth control, which meant a woman may well be paying for it completely out of pocket. This left birth control out of reach for many, and left many others turning to places like Planned Parenthood for assistance. It will come as no surprise to people with legitimate brain cells to rub together that, following the passage of the ACA and the sudden availability of birth control to most women in America, abortion rates reached an all-time low in this nation. The fact that, despite this fact, seemingly "pro-life" people want to make birth control harder to acquire and more expensive would seem to show pretty conclusively that they aren't really all that pro-life at all and, more than likely, don't have any legitimate brain cells to rub together.

That, right there, is what truly lies at the crux of this matter. None of this is actually about babies, protecting the sanctity of life, or taking care of women. All of it, absolutely all of it, is about control. Control over something that, if recent activity is any indication, seems to threaten men in this country far more than heart disease, gun violence, or suicide (all things that kill men at higher rates than they kill women). That very dangerous something over which men are desperately grasping for control would appear to be women.

One doesn't have to travel back in time very far to get to a decade in which the white man was basically the king of the castle, no matter how big or small that castle was. Women stayed home, for the most part, tending to the children, making sure dinner was on the stove, and ensuring their waist size never expanded beyond the size of my quadricep muscles. If you're currently picturing something reminiscent of Pleasantville crossed with the Stepford Wives, good. That's about the concept many of these terrified little boys who are after strict control over women's bodies seem to desire.

While some of this forced housewifery started to loosen when women were given the "right" to work outside of the house (a huge push in this direction came during World War II, when women moved into many of the jobs vacated by men who were on the front lines), thus given the right to earn money and, if they desired, theoretically support themselves, the big push in the realm of women's equality came in the form of the birth control pill. Which brings us to our current war, today. "The pill," as it has come to be known, was the first great equalizer, all the more so when it was finally made widely available with nothing more than a doctor's prescription. Getting married no longer guaranteed the end to a woman's career, as it no longer guaranteed a woman would become pregnant immediately. Women entered the workforce in numbers never seen before and, much to the dismay of some of the men they displaced, they've never left. Not completely.

While some women leave every year to change careers or to become stay-at-home-moms, the overwhelming majority of women today will return to work, even if only part-time, as soon as possible following a baby's birth. For many this is a product of necessity. The household cannot survive on only one income, thus the woman has to go back to work. For many others, however, it is a product of desire. Women now have grown up watching their mothers pursue any number of dreams and desires outside the home. For many, the idea of giving up everything they have worked towards or worked for to pursue motherhood full-time simply isn't an appealing option. Thanks to grandparents, friends, babysitters, and daycare, women who wish to return to work rather frequently can, going back on the pill when necessary to ensure that their career is not further interrupted until they are ready for said interruption.

The pill had effects outside of the workforce, as well. Women were now free to experiment, sexually, in many of the same ways that men had been doing basically since male humans figured out what their dicks were for. As nothing besides abstinence is 100% effective there were, of course, single mothers to be found or unhappily had shotgun weddings that led to unhappily maintained marriages. While a single mother may have remained a blight on the reputation of her family, the consistent push that women were making into the workforce meant she no longer remained tied to the man who got her pregnant if she didn't want to be. Not only was he faced with the prospect of having to support a baby he probably didn't really want, he's having to do it without the benefit of getting a wife who will cook, clean, and keep his house for him while he's off at work.

Lest it seem like I'm treating birth control like something that benefits only women, it's worth noting that most straight men I know consider the birth control pill a damn godsend. 99 out of 100 times they could have sex with their partner using absolutely no other form of protection and they'll walk away without having induced nine months of weight gain and discomfort for their partner, followed by 18 years of "dad, can I have money to go to the movies?" Those are pretty good odds. The ability to control when you have a family is hardly an ability that benefits only women.   Yet, within the workforce, it is an ability that improved women's odds significantly more than men's. As such, it is an ability that is seen by some men not as an "equalizer" but as an "over reach" of sorts. As the saying goes, for those who have always had greater power in a society, the presence of equality can feel oddly like oppression. Birth control isn't oppressing men, though you wouldn't know it to hear some of them talk about how thoroughly it should be regulated.

So, to recap. They want to illegalize abortion and make birth control significantly harder to get, thus ensuring that women who have sex are more likely to get pregnant and have to keep the baby. They want to drastically reduce the welfare outlets available to poor families, reduce the funding pumped into foster facilities in this country, and refuse to do anything meaningful to help middle-class women keep their jobs (and at least part of their paycheck) when they take the inevitably necessary leave to birth their baby. They clearly don't care about the child after it's born, as they want to provide no aid for it or its family. Which means their prerogative isn't babies, their prerogative is fetuses. And they clearly have no interest in ensuring women are treated properly, as they want to regulate their bodies, their choices, and their access to medication that could help them better control their lives.

This is completely about punishing women, married or not, for the act of having sex. If they can punish them for having sex, then they can control them. Again.

But sure, let's keep talking about how the "war on women" is a liberal figment of the imagination designed to scare people.

3 Mothers on Why They Chose to Get Abortions

The decision to terminate a pregnancy is never easy, but it’s one millions of women have faced. Whether influenced by medical complications or personal reasons that range from emotional to economical, no two situations are alike. As women’s rights to govern their own bodies are debated in the public sphere, the need to educate ourselves and each other on what governance truly looks like, beyond the clichés we see in the movies, feels especially urgent. Below are three anonymous as-told-to stories that lend depth to just one subset of women who have chosen not to carry pregnancies to term: mothers.

An Unwanted Pregnancy a Year After a Wanted One

I have a three-year-old daughter and, at the end of February, my son turned one. After he was born, I was trying different birth control methods because I was having some hormone imbalances and irregular periods. I was also dealing with some postpartum anxiety and depression, so I was trying to get that all straightened out. I got on a pill for a while that I didn’t love and missed periods on, but I continued to take it consistently. At the end of May, when my period was late, I didn’t think anything of it, but I was at Target and grabbed a pregnancy test just to give myself peace of mind. It came back positive.

I was dumbfounded. I’m not sure I totally believed birth control failed. When I heard 99% effective, I assumed the other 1% must just not be using it correctly. I had some judgments there. Suddenly though, I was in that 1%. That was humbling.

I work full time, and I had also just been elected into a public position through a pretty high-profile election process. One of the reasons I decided to run was because of the November presidential election and what I would call an assault on women’s rights, as well as a number of other things. So with two promotions at work, plus this new public role, plus two kids under the age of three, it was just really overwhelming. My daughter was jumping on the trampoline and my son was demanding to be picked up and my husband was at a work dinner and I was like, Oh my god, what am I going to do? And all those things hit me at once.

I think when you’re already a mom and you’re looking at an unexpected pregnancy, there are two sides. You know what it feels like to love a kid and to see your baby for the first time. You know the amazingness of watching a child come into the world and start to grow up and learn new things. But you also have a very deep understanding of the cost of that additional person, from an economic, emotional and time standpoint. Obviously the actual cost is not insignificant — you’re looking at another $350 a week in daycare expenses in addition to what you’re already paying, plus all the food and everything else. But I think what it came to for me was I thought adding one more thing would break me.

Women can’t have full economic justice without having access to choice.

I told my husband when he came home that night, and his initial reaction was, “I think we could be a good family of five.” He’s always been very pro-choice, like me, but he immediately went to that moral argument of: We don’t have a good enough reason to end this pregnancy, as if the financial or emotional wasn’t good enough. But I think I knew fairly early on that the right thing to do at this moment in our lives was not to have a pregnancy. We’d taken all the necessary precautions. So after my husband and I weighed the pros and cons, we sat with it. I had to reframe the “my body, my choice” — because we needed to make the decision together.

After a few days we came to the conclusion that it didn’t make sense for us to have another baby right then. A lot of it was about mental load and the capacity of our family to take that on. The impact on my mental health, my family, everybody, it was too much. The mental load you carry as a mom is such a weight to bear. The act of loving someone at that level and being responsible for other humans at that level is so significant. You can’t always make room for more. When you hear people trying to convince women to keep pregnancies by giving them free diapers and a stroller, I think: That’s nice, thats helpful, but taking on the lifelong responsibility for another human life is almost laughable in comparison to what two packs of diapers can provide. The mental load is huge.

I think in some ways my experience has taken some of the histrionics out of abortion for me. I’m much more in tune with the logic of it now, and the economic justice of it. We can’t lose sight of that: Women can’t have full economic justice without having access to choice. We will ultimately pay the price if we don’t have that access. This experience has christened that for me. For my husband, it’s made him much more vocal about being pro-choice. I think it’s important to have men be vocal.

The state I live in has some pretty bad laws, and people protest in front of our Planned Parenthood. Having people shout things at you and make judgments about you and your life is painful…but also very silly. They think you haven’t thought of these things already and that shouting, “YOU’RE A MURDERER,” at you will make you go back to your car? It’s such a hateful act to me. It’s not a decision anyone wants to make.

And then I contrast that to the care I received inside. I think the people who go to work there every day — nurses and counselors who have to give patients false information because the state requires it — are the most amazing, caring people. They walk in every day and face literal physical danger to make sure we have access to this service. I remember in the middle of the procedure, there was someone who said, “I’m just here to hold your hand if you need anything.”

In some ways in makes me feel like I need to stay here and fight the good fight, but I’m also like, Get me out of here.

Two Abortions, Two Very Different Circumstances

I had my first abortion when I was a teenager, 16. I wasn’t flippant about it — I put a lot of thought into it, but the decision to get an abortion was very clear cut for me. I knew what I wanted to do. I only told my boyfriend and my mom; they were both really supportive. My mom especially so, because she knew what being pregnant as a teen was like. She had me when she was 16, and I know that had a big impact on her life and mine, and that wasn’t something I was ready for. My mom is a hippie, and my entire life she taught me to know myself, be in tune with myself, follow my instincts, and so I really felt like I made the best decision. It wasn’t something that weighed on me.

A couple years later, I got pregnant again. I was 17 then, and still felt unprepared, but unprepared in a way where I thought I could step up and make it work. That felt different. There were moments of weighing my options; I was not in a great relationship at the time, and knew that I was going to have to raise the child alone. I was fairly responsible, but when you’re that age, there’s still so much to learn. I was lucky, though, in that I’d tested out of high school early, and that meant I had a lot of time to have fun experiences. I fit a lot into those years, and I think that was helpful. In the end, I felt like it was something I could do and be good at, so I changed my life around and had my son at 18.

By my mid-20s, I was married. By then I was working in fashion, and the hours were really demanding. When I got pregnant with my daughter, I decided I wanted to spend more time at home, stop traveling so much, and stop working such crazy hours. So I decided to leave my job. That ended up being kind of a perfect storm, though, because I had a lot of my identity tied up in my career. Also, my relationship with my husband changed really drastically when we had my daughter, and I think there was a touch of postpartum depression going on as well. I spiraled. I put myself on auto-pilot to take care of everybody else, but emotionally I was just in a really dark place.

That continued for a couple of years. I felt really isolated. I started questioning my marriage and my place in the world. I was really anxious, and during this time, because I had stopped working to stay with the kids, we had to make a lot of cutbacks to make it work. One of those was health insurance, and not having health insurance made it very hard to get birth control. The only kind I could afford were pills and patches, both of which I had negative experiences with in the past. My husband and I resorted to alternative forms of BC as a result. And then, in January of this year, I found out I was pregnant again. It was the first time in 10 years that my husband and I had an unwanted pregnancy, and we’re still not totally sure what went wrong.

When I was pregnant with our daughter, we were ecstatic, but this time, we were both like, fuck.

At 16, it felt very cut and dry: I was not capable of raising a child, I would give a child a horrible life, this is just bad for everybody involved. This time around though, I was married, we had kids, we had a stable home. Not wanting the pregnancy felt selfish. It weighed on me in a different way; it was so difficult. But what it really came down to was the fact that I felt like my mental health was deteriorating, and I didn’t really know how to fix that, and I just thought: What if this gets worse? We also didn’t have the space, we didn’t have the money. I thought: If we tax ourselves further, is that something I can mentally and emotionally handle? I just didn’t think I could. I didn’t know that I wouldn’t just break down and leave everyone depending on me in the lurch.

My husband was very supportive. He said, “This is your body, you’re the person who will have to deal with all the changes and I respect what you want to do.” When I was pregnant with our daughter, we were ecstatic, but this time, we were both like, Fuck.

Deciding to ultimately have an abortion drastically changed my life. Going through that process of looking at my life and evaluating what made my life unfit to bring a child into really set forth some positive changes. I’d been going through the motions, not really thinking about what in my life was making me feel so fragile. After that, I did a lot of work on myself and have brought myself to a place where mentally, physically and emotionally, I’m a lot healthier.

If I’d had the child, I just don’t know how much longer I would have gone on feeling depressed and broken and not doing anything about it. It shook up my life. And I ended up finding out there was a program in my state that made a free IUD accessible to me. I had no idea it was there. It wasn’t publicized or I would have known I had access to that beforehand and I never would have needed an abortion in the first place.

Ever since, I’ve been looking into ways to help make people aware of what their options are. I’ve reached out and talked to friends about abortions and topics that I previously would have kept to myself. I think it’s something more women need to talk to each other about.

An Illegal Procedure in Exchange for Freedom

I was a medical student in Germany when I got pregnant. I was 24, I should have known better, but I was just very ignorant; I didn’t have anyone to talk to about birth control or anyone to confide in in terms of my sexuality. I was in a very insecure place in terms of my future, and was not in a good relationship at all. There was absolutely no question that I would not go through with the pregnancy.

I found a physician who performed abortions for women, in his office in the city where I was going to medical school. Everything went very smoothly, then I was discharged, went home and that was that. I never had any regrets about it because I didn’t want to have anything tying me to that relationship.

This was 1969. Abortion was still illegal in the United States and in Germany, too. Germany, at that time, was a much more liberal society. The fact that it was illegal was an imposition on what people really wanted. It was a law that was not respected.

I was able to be a much more productive and socially useful person than if I had been forced into motherhood.

I had children much later. I was the oldest of many children and my mother died when I was 14. I’d had a lot of responsibility to take care of my younger siblings and wasn’t really interested in having children until I was much older. My son was born when I was 39 and my daughter before I turned 41.

Not having a child at 24 meant I did not have to maintain a connection with a toxic relationship. It allowed me to move on. It allowed me to have my career and finish my education and to move about freely without any kind of inhibition or responsibility toward someone other than myself. That’s putting it in a self-centered way, but I never had any qualms about that being the right decision because I was able to be a much more productive and socially useful person than if I had been forced into motherhood.

I think any abortion occurs in a context, and the context is really what determines the ability or the need to keep or terminate a pregnancy, whether it’s a financial need, economic need, health need or relationship need. What are the actual conditions? What are the possibilities? And out of what kind of a relationship does the pregnancy happen? If you’re in a toxic relationship, keeping a pregnancy has an effect on you and the child for the rest of life..

The current debate around reproductive rights is disenfranchising women. It’s re-establishing patriarchy in the domestic realm. It’s disrespectful of a woman’s right to choose, which is a very difficult choice. I think abortion is extremely different from any other kind of medical procedure. There is a real moral and ethical challenge, but I think that responsibility and weight should be taken in context to how it affects a woman and her world, her relationships, her career, her life plan.

The platform churned out 50 to 60 thousand ads a day.  By pinpointing the things you care about most , they seemed to use the trickery well because it worked.

Well put Desirina Boskovich.** The American college of physicians says that gun violence is a public health issue and calls for banning automatic and semi -automatic weapons.** 78% of Americans don’t own guns.**Wayne LaPierre was on Face the Nation to reinforce that anti -gun people are elites. The only sane thing he said was that we need to enforce the laws we have in place better to start with.

People seem very divided on this issue  but this country has always disagreed on their version of patriotism. Wearing the flag s disrespectful, kneeling during our anthem is not. Perhaps the players should hold AR 15’s instead of taking a knee. Our President does not seem to have a problem with protesters showing up armed.**Pence made a big show of walking out of the game after the kneel. Only loves the team if they think as he does. *****The White house thinks NBC should apologize after their report about Rex Tillerson threatening to resign after clashes with Trump. The scuttlebutt is that Pence intervened. Word is that Tillerson called Trump a fucking moron. Rex says he never considered leaving.

*****Senate intelligence can’t seem to get anywhere on the Trump dossier because everyone refuses to cooperate.  The committee has reported they are still interviewing and going thru documents. The investigation is now in exploratory mode. They do know that Russia is currently active in meddling in our election process and our vote tallies were accurate. Republican members of the bipartisan panel are praising the Obama administration for their complete cooperation.
