watching the one piece “episode of sabo - the three brothers’ bond” and i am reminded of how immediately after i watched the asl episodes in my rewatch i had such big feelings and went to my friend to vent about this (she doesnt watch or read OP) and just. wailed.
explaining how they were a set of three and then sabo died and how luffy says “you’re the only brother that i have” to luffy when he was running through marineford
ace saying “if not for sabo and a high maintenance brother like you, i wouldn’t have wanted to live anyway” (or something similar im not sure if that’s the correct quote)
explaining how ace accepted he wanted to live when he was finally facing death, all because he realised how loved he was, and how it’s a disservice to the people that are putting their lives on the line to rescue his (in his opinion) meager life
how ace died saying to pass him message to dadan if you ever see her, in his last moments he misses a woman like her even
and how luffy cried and cried and cried trying to destroy his life and his body because what does he have to live for? he’s all alone now he’s back to being seven his shanks have left and he has no brothers and he’s so lonely until jinbe ever so lovingly (very harshly, but with so much love) reminded him of what he still has
how i had to tell but actually sabo didn’t die sabo was alive only neither ace nor luffy knew and ace actually died thinking sabo was dead
then explaining the head injury and following amnesia and the way he was only able to remember AFTER the death of his beloved brother, when it was published everywhere
and how. how it must’ve taken like years for fans even to get full confirmation of sabo’s return
my girl was absolutely floored (oh oda what the hell, she exclaimed)
the tragedy that is ace sabo and luffy
and i know we have such sad backstories for so many other characters but they’re other people’s stories you know? but luffy is ours! and that’s why i think luffy’s story hit me more than anything else
