hmmm thinking abt how much i hate that trope where a character will literally leave the entire world/population to die just to protect the one person they hold dear.. idk esp when they’re portrayed as some sort of hero, i just think it’s such a boring and shallow characterisation to not hold anything as equally important and to not have any sort of moral conflict. to simply easily abandon all forms of life for the sake of your own selfish joy is so gross to me… like thats just a one dimensional villain. boring AND evil to the bone whilst being portrayed as a romantic ewwww.

I do find it a bit amusing that despite being such an avid multi shipper and kny enthusiast, the only popular ship I genuinely like in the fandom is renkaza…. My curse of not liking the ship dynamics that fandom as a whole does persists

#I mean. I do really like shinomitsu and gentan too #but like. those aren’t really THAT popular esp in comparison to the actual popular ships #well. so what im getting is that it was absolutely unnecessary to isolate raffi on gotham city in order for her story to go on.

a story that’s so halfhearted that five episodes in—halfway to the end. btw—her motivation is yet to be explained (why go back to this sector of intelligence work when teaching seemed to be fulfilling? was she made to do this?? did she volunteer because her son now lives on this planet now apparently?? was losing elnor cris and possibly seven so painful that burying herself in work seemed like a better option??? who knows! not me!!) and it’s definitely a retreat character-wise but the fact that they still haven’t laid the groundwork to make this stick is kind of amazing lol. it’s the way they’re not even pretending to give a fuck about her or any of the other women characters for me—they said you’re a womb or a subordinate ladies pick one and shut the hell up LMAO?

the fact that the ‘real plot’ is happening on that other ship while everything raffi does is basically an afterthought with backstory slipped in between the cracks like aged caulk is so disheartening and pathetic. star trek picard make an effort maybe. she’s a polarizing character that’s been stuck in impossible situations, weighed down with retractions and stereotypes (they thread the line but HM) because the narrative continually refuses to meaningfully engage with her and a lot of fans of the show wont examine their own biases to see why they have such a viscerally negative reaction to a complicated black woman character that’s good at what she does, knows it and refuses to kneel at the foot of their hero’s :)

and if it wasn’t for ms hurd elevating this performance with sheer will, massive talent and the whip of that (sexy) ponytail? shit would be so much worse. but it’s still bad! because instead of giving her a nuanced, thoughtful send off she’s once again being made to suffer for the nth time. because why? oh right so wise man worf can guide her to the light lol give me a fuckin break.

and it’s no accident that if you cut raffi out (which they literally did in ep4 miss musiker you WILL be avenged) the story could more or less proceed as usual. that’s by design.

because legacy characters or not, im simply not buying that the main white cast members (plus two interlopers idgaf about those new guys and they’re doing nothing to make me care either. pick a random channel and their stories are being told right now live and in color like don’t piss me off) just so happen to be on the ship with the lead yet the sole woc is sent away on some underbaked adventure because ‘reasons?’ please. this season literally could not be more transparent about the audience they’re catering to and who/whose stories are of importance and consideration.

and i knew this would probably happen once the premise for s3 was revealed but i still can’t get over how obvious it is that there really was no plan for raffi and that she only happened to bypass the cull of the la sirena crew because she was romantically linked with seven at the time. which is baffling considering how things are (not) going between them (#theyareMARRIEDletthemTALKandKISSandREST)

and it’s not just them like everything about this season is quite literally happening just because. every slightly interesting or fresh development (and character it’s true) from the previous seasons has been dismissed or diminished and for what? secret sons and man pain? ew lmao. no suspense no lingering threads just excessive shots of ships, an aggressive insistence on biological families and rampant, shameless references to past glory. a mess.

''Same person different font'' thing regarding Mary and Dean's characters irk me so much lmao...

RIGHT omg like. On one hand we have a person who is authentically compassionate, is capable of acting outside of her own self-interest more often than not, doesn’t take out her emotions on the people around her, and owns her mistakes and shortcomings. On the other hand we have a person who is none of those things, and is furthermore a violent control freak who categorically abuses those closest to him. These are fundamental differences in the way these two characters interact with the world and others, which is far more significant in a comparison than any surface-level similarities. Liking cars and jerky does not a “same person different fonts” make.

Like lol I mean… I won’t be wholly disingenuous, I’m not going to pretend Mary and Dean have no commonalities whatsoever, because they do. In my take I’d say they both have something of a lying habit that they view not as necessarily harmful but as protecting others, as well as a tendency toward self-destructive behaviour and definitely some kind of saviour complex(?). But those similarities are still not nearly enough, in my opinion, to overshadow the fact that these two characters are otherwise, as outlined above, pretty much morally and socially disparate people. Which is to say, very much not the “literal same”.

It also just feels so reductive and honestly lazy to just write Mary off as just Dean: the Prequel or whatever and leave it at that. People do much the same with Claire (Dean 2: Simba’s Pride) and even with Max Banes (Dean the 3rd), and honestly it’s kind of. Dismal. That these characters can’t just stand on their own for a significant portion of the fandom and have to be reduced to “Dean mirrors” to warrant any thought, and are then only really thought about through that lens. Like I’m sorry that is NOT the deep character analysis you think it is 😭

#It’s not even that I think parent-child comparisons in character analysis don’t have merit because I do #Like from my perspective Crowley and Rowena share some fascinating similarities that I like writing about #But it’s also not the be all end all to either of their characters for me #And more than that I don’t think it’s a stretch to say they’re similar people in the first place.#But it’s really obvious to me that Mary in situ is actually so much closer to how people wish/pretend Dean is #than Dean in situ is actually is.#The “secret good” fanon Dean might be Mary in a different font (in a nearly literal sense too) but canon Dean is not #That’s just my opinion anyway #Ask #Dean critical #Also. Maybe a character has some overlapping traits with Dean but that doesn’t mean they have to be “mirrors”??????#I swear these people would have you think that every character in the entire show is just a version of someone from t/f/w #Not that I want to give the writers too much credit for anything like originality lol but like. Please #Even if the writers WERE just hitting control-V on Dean every time they came up with a troubled character or whatever #I can’t imagine a more boring lens for analysis.#DeangirIs talk like they’re trapped in Naomi’s Dean clone warehouse because every character is Dean to them #EXCEPT DEAN. can we talk about how overproduced reality tv has gotten and how it’s completely ruined the genre

#maybe not completely ruined but almost completely #and before someone comes at me saying ‘you know reality tv is fake right-' I’M AWARE i’m aware.#but if you look at reality tv now vs. back in the early 00s/‘10s there’s a stark difference and not in a good way #i blame two things mostly 1) complacency and 2) social media/influencer culture #hear me out ☝🏾#so the complacency thing isn't solely a reality tv issue #all genres will have shows that stick to the basic tropes of that genre because they know what will get viewers #i think it’s just easier to spot in reality shows because the main ‘characters' aren't real actors #which somewhat leads into my next point #although reality tv is obviously scripted (how much it’s scripted varies from show to show) shows from the 00s/10s did have a certain-#authenticity to them #the people on these shows wanted to make their mark and so they actually put some effort into being entertaining and putting on a spectacle #if you sat there like a lump on a log and did jack shit then obviously no one was going tune in #and then boom !! social media blows up and influencers become a thing #all of a sudden reality tv becomes almost sterile #there’s not even a facade of realness being held up anymore people go on these shows to build their brands/platforms and that’s it #it’s no longer about what plotline(s) will be the most entertaining it’s about what will make the main star/stars look good #every scene is perfectly lit and every person in the scene has immaculate makeup and clothing even if they’re just sitting at home #the people on these shows put essentially no effort into being entertaining they’re like paint drying personified #even the fights are boring #but because reality tv isn’t really taken seriously as a genre the same mundanity continues to get churned out and people aren’t really-#bothered #anyway. sorry for the brick wall of text in the tags but i needed to get my thoughts out #i wrote so much that’s wild 😭#like who is even reading this
