A lawyer for Singapore blogger Leong Sze Hian said he raised enough cash from fellow citizens to fully cover damages awarded to Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in a defamation trial.
Singapore’s High Court on March 24 ordered Leong to pay S$133,000 ($98,800) to Lee for posting a link to a Malaysian news site that alleged the city-state’s leader had helped launder 1Malaysia Development Berhad funds.
Since then more than 2,000 people donated to a crowdfunding campaign on social media to raise the full amount, Lim Tean, Leong’s attorney, posted to Facebook on Monday.
“A new Singaporean has emerged,” Lim said. “Every citizen can now have the confidence that their fellow men will be their shield and bulwark against those who attempt to suppress their speech.”
Singapore Blogger Ordered to Pay Damages in PM Defamation Suit
The Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment.
The Singaporean leader, who has sued other people for defamation while in office, was personally cross-examined in court during the trial in October, and his lawyers have said the accusations are false and baseless. During the trial, Lee maintained it was his right to defend himself amid what he called a “grave attack” on his personal integrity and reputation.
Leong, in his defense, had denied he was being malicious. He removed the Facebook post, though court documents showed he didn’t comply with a letter of demand sent by Lee’s lawyers to make a public apology.
Before it’s here, it’s on the Bloomberg Terminal.

Hihi all except warmongers, 大家好! During my catch up with Grace and Douglas over the weekend, Grace disclosed that she ordered close to $1,000 worth of surgical masks for family members in her hometown, with strict instructions to wear 2 layers at workplaces and change them every 8 hours. I've also sent regular reminders to my own folks not to recycle masks and only use fresh ones daily.
youtube
As for my helper, she received her second vaccine dose last Friday morning. Her response to it was so robust, I gave her the day as well as entire weekend off to recuperate. She recovered and was well by Sunday. She was also bored enough to insist that she complete some lighter chores once she felt better 😅
Ever since returning to the office, I've made arrangements with my helper to ensure her safety. After I get home, shower and eat, I self-isolate in my bedroom. If we interact, both of us wear surgical masks. This continues for 2 weeks after her second vaccine dose, until she's fully vaccinated. I explained to her the importance of this practice and, whilst she misses hanging out and chatting, thankfully she understands.
youtube
Recently, I received misleading texts about vaccine passports/differentiated measures for the vaccinated and those who are not. The way they were worded, the message conveyed was that such safety measures are meant to discriminate against those who're unvaccinated because they're either not eligible to take the vaccines or remain hesitant.
To combat such misinformation, I set the record straight with the senders of these misleading texts, many of them unvaccinated. Vaccine passports/differentiated measures are not meant to discriminate. Their purpose is to protect societies' most vulnerable, so they do not contract the Delta variant, become hospitalised or die. They are there to save lives.
I didn't receive much abuse for my stance, in part because I didn't use judgmental language against the unvaccinated. I didn't label them selfish because they might just be very fearful of the health risks new vaccines pose. If they come around and accept my view - and most do, great. If they don't, the discussion ends, at least on my part, after highlighting that there are other means they can turn to in order to participate in more activities, such as producing a negative covid test.
The most vulnerable in society have a right to be protected against the Delta variant, especially since they're the ones most likely to suffer severe symptoms or die should they contract the virus. Vaccine passports/differentiated measures for the vaccinated and unvaccinated are thus very humanitarian practices designed to protect rather than discriminate.
Till the next time, 下次见!

Minister Josephine Teo: Don’t talk about foreign worker infection, election not about me
Tumblr media
When contesting opposition People’s Voice Lim Tean mentioned that Jalan Besar voters should treat this election as a referendum for Manpower Minister Josephine Teo, the PAP minister said she does not want to talk about the foreign worker infection during the coronavirus outbreak.
Minister Josephine Teo said voters should not vote based on her performance in government:
“I am not that important hahaha. I don’t think the residents feel that this is a referendum on me.”
PAP minister Josephine Teo then threatened Jalan Besar voters that their town upgrading will be affected if PAP is not in power:
“Rejuvenation, estate upgrading, and the introduction of new features are some of the things residents hope will continue (if PAP win). The constituency (under PAP) has seen five MRT lines over the years… But there is a lot more that we can do, and we hope to do so.”

Blogger Leong Sze Hian submits defence and countersuit against PM Lee, Singapore News & Top Stories - The Straits Times
Tumblr media
SINGAPORE - Financial consultant and blog writer Leong Sze Hian has submitted a defence and countersuit against Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, claiming PM Lee's defamation fit versus him is an abuse of the procedure of the court.
In court papers posted online on Wednesday (Dec 26), Mr Leong's attorney also argues, amongst other things, that what he did was no more than what thousands of others had performed in sharing the upseting article on Facebook. The post said PM Lee had helped to wash cash from the embattled 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fund.
Another argument made by Mr Leong's lawyer, Mr Lim Tean, was that the article on how Singapore and PM Lee had actually ended up being investigation targets was "a matter of public interest ... whether it was correct". Mr Lim, who is with Carson Law Chambers, had just recently established the brand-new opposition celebration called Individuals's Voice.
PM Lee started legal action against Mr Leong last month, after he shared on his Facebook page part of the headline of the post from Malaysian news portal The Protection, with a link to the complete post.
PM Lee's legal representatives said the allegations in the post were "false and baseless", and it was clear Mr Leong had published the post "maliciously and to damage our customer".
The Coverage article was described as "phony news and clearly libellous" by Singapore's High Commission in Malaysia on Nov 7. Mr Leong posted the post on the exact same day.
In response to media inquiries on Wednesday, Ms Chang Li Lin, the Prime Minister's press secretary, stated the matter is prior to the courts and that PM Lee will continue to take legal recommendations on advancements.
Mr Leong rejects he was being harmful, according to the court documents published on his Facebook page. He said he was, to name a few things, familiar with how 1MDB funds had been washed through Singapore bank accounts, which the Monetary Authority of Singapore had actually acknowledged these findings had actually affected Singapore's reputation as a tidy financial hub.
"He therefore saw no reason to disbelieve that statement that the Singapore federal government was one of the essential investigative targets of 1MDB detectives and he considered it was a matter of public interest that this was being reported to be so, whether it was correct," said the court documents.
They further stated that after he had posted the short article, Mr Leong saw that the Singapore Government thought about the article "fake news". He likewise knew Facebook, The Protection and The States Times Review had all refused to take the post down. However he took down his Facebook post on Nov 10 after being told to do so by the Infocomm Media Advancement Authority (IMDA), said the court documents.
Mr Leong's "only involvement in this matter has been to make available the post in The Protection on his Facebook page without decoration or comment for less than three days", they included.
The court papers also said: "The Complainant has actually selected upon a prominent federal government critic who did no greater than countless others in order to send out a wider message to the population not to question the function of the Singapore federal government in the 1MDB scandal especially ahead of the trial of Najib Razak, the previous Prime Minister of Malaysia, and a most likely basic election in Singapore."
In alleging that PM Lee's lawsuit is an abuse of the court procedure, Mr Leong's attorney stated in his countersuit: "The predominant function of the claim is the usage of the legal process to chill liberty of expression in Singapore typically and in specific to restrict reporting on any function the Government might have had in the 1MDB scandal."
Mr Leong is seeking compensation for damage to his track record through the issuance, continuation and reporting on the legal procedures, along with expenses, according to the court papers.
PM Lee is seeking worsened damages along with expenses, plus an injunction that Mr Leong be prevented from publishing or sharing the said defamatory accusations, or any other accusations of complicity in matters associating with 1MDB by any means.
The upseting words in the article, consisted of the title: "Breaking News: Singapore Lee Hsien Loong Becomes 1MDB's Secret Examination Target - Najib Signed Numerous Unfair Contracts With Hsien Loong In Exchange For Loan Laundering". These are "meant and were comprehended to indicate that the Plaintiff corruptly utilized his position as Prime Minister to assist Mr Najib Razak launder 1MDB's billions", PM Lee's attorneys had stated.
As a different and unique libel, the offending words in Mr Leong's Facebook post "indicated and were comprehended to imply that the Plaintiff was complicit in criminal activity associating with 1MDB". Together, these words "are incorrect and unwarranted and were calculated to disparage and impugn the Plaintiff in his office as the Prime Minister", PM Lee's attorneys stated.
In seeking exacerbated damages, PM Lee would count on various truths, consisting of the nature and gravity of the libels, the mode, extent and timing of their publication, and PM Lee's position and standing, stated lawyers for the Prime Minister.

Genomic and Epigenomic Profiling of High-Risk Intestinal Metaplasia Reveals Molecular Determinants of Progression to Gastric Cancer
Publication date: Available online 28 December 2017 Source:Cancer Cell Author(s): Kie Kyon Huang, Kalpana Ramnarayanan, Feng Zhu, Supriya Srivastava, Chang Xu, Angie Lay Keng Tan, Minghui Lee, Suting Tay, Kakoli Das, Manjie Xing, Aliya Fatehullah, Syed Muhammad Fahmy Alkaff, Tony Kiat Hon Lim, Jonathan Lee, Khek Yu Ho, Steven George Rozen, Bin Tean Teh, Nick Barker, Chung King Chia, Christopher Khor, Choon Jin Ooi, Kwong Ming Fock, Jimmy So, Wee Chian Lim, Khoon Lin Ling, Tiing Leong Ang, Andrew Wong, Jaideepraj Rao, Andrea Rajnakova, Lee Guan Lim, Wai Ming Yap, Ming Teh, Khay Guan Yeoh, Patrick Tan Intestinal metaplasia (IM) is a pre-malignant condition of the gastric mucosa associated with increased gastric cancer (GC) risk. We performed (epi)genomic profiling of 138 IMs from 148 cancer-free patients, recruited through a 10-year prospective study. Compared with GCs, IMs exhibit low mutational burdens, recurrent mutations in certain tumor suppressors (FBXW7) but not others (TP53, ARID1A), chromosome 8q amplification, and shortened telomeres. Sequencing identified more IM patients with active Helicobacter pylori infection compared with histopathology (11%–27%). Several IMs exhibited hypermethylation at DNA methylation valleys; however, IMs generally lack intragenic hypomethylation signatures of advanced malignancy. IM patients with shortened telomeres and chromosomal alterations were associated with subsequent dysplasia or GC; conversely patients exhibiting normal-like epigenomic patterns were associated with regression.

Hihi all except warmongers, 大家好! Earlier this year, there was news about the EU taking part in economic cooperation talks with India. Before these nations go ahead with signing trade agreements, perhaps you might want to consider the horrendous effects on Singaporeans after the PAP went ahead and sealed the deal. Loss of jobs, devastation, unfair hiring practices by Indian companies set up in the small nation, etc.
Make no mistake, Singaporeans are extremely angry about the CECA, a trade agreement signed with India. Not only have India nationals plagiarised a national song and claimed that they composed it first, they treat their host nation's people shabbily and behaved extremely arrogantly towards a country that has warmly welcomed them, they have also ensured that the nation got the short hand of the stick. The PAP tried to defend the lopsided trade agreement, but this time, citizens are not falling for the smokescreens.
To those who think India is a great form of check and balance to contain China, hey, go ahead. Please sign agreements with them so that they leave Southeast Asia alone. If you want their people infesting your home soil, if you want more of your citizens out of a job because India nationals are being hired over your own in spite of dubious educational qualifications, go right ahead. When even Indians of Southeast Asian nationalities are against India citizens flooding their countries, it says alot, doesn't it?
This is what happens when you sign a lopsided agreement with India, a huge country which could very well be trying to leverage their position as a counterbalance to China and exploit other countries negotiating trade deals with them. Singaporeans have suffered massively so take this as a warning. Go ahead at your own risk. And if you should go ahead, Singaporeans will thank you. They will be free to pursue trade deals with more ethical parties.
FYI, despite Singapore's kindness to India, this is how ungrateful their citizens are. Many expats who live in this tiny country don't want to return home thanks to the warm welcome they've received from its people. And yet, here are arrogant India nationals who have the audacity to snub their host country's kindness. This is the kind of gratitude you get. Can you blame Singaporeans for wanting the CECA to be abolished? Good for them! Until India learns to respect other nations, it has no business doing trade deals.
As for the EU, hey, if you want to go ahead with trade agreements with India, many Singaporeans will encourage you to please take them! They've had enough of the arrogance of India nationals, their unethical hiring practices once they set up their businesses in the country, as well as their mistreatment of locals. You know what? You'll be doing Southeast Asia a favour. Take them. Take them please!
