Hurt meme. @ruinedmyself: “i’m fine, it’s just a flesh wound, i’ll be okay.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he could smell the infection. the corruption of flesh that had started to work its way into the wound. linc could leave. another dead human was nothing to worry over and it was one less annoyance that would be bothering him in his life. be kind, my boy. his mother's ghost whispered to him. a soft but firm tone that he thought he had forgotten. being kind got his kindred pushed to near extinction. his lip curled at the thought but his body ignored him. " he said rapidly. a deep sigh passed his lips, and he bravely slapped the human over the head before grabbing him to peer at the wound. " shut up, bef're i feed ya t'a gator. "

Lawrence Tesler, Who Made Personal Computing Easier, Dies at 74
Lawrence Tesler, a pioneering computer scientist who helped make it easier for users to interact with computers, whether cutting and pasting text or selecting text by dragging a cursor through it, died on Sunday at his home in Portola Valley, Calif. He was 74.
The cause was not known, his wife, Colleen Barton, said, but in recent years he had suffered the effects of an earlier bicycle accident.
Mr. Tesler worked at a number of Silicon Valley’s most important companies, including Apple under Steve Jobs. But it was as a young researcher for Xerox at its Palo Alto Research Center in the 1970s that he did his most significant work: helping to develop today’s style of computer interaction based on a graphical desktop metaphor and a mouse.
Early in his Xerox career (he began there in 1973), Mr. Tesler and another researcher, Tim Mott, developed a program known as Gypsy, which did away with the restrictive modes that had made text editing complicated. For example, until Gypsy, most text-editing software had one mode for entering text and another for editing it.
Mr. Tesler was passionate about simplifying interaction with computers. At Apple he was responsible for the idea that a computer mouse should have only one button. For many years the license plate on his car read, “NO MODES.”
His first breakthrough at Xerox PARC came when he took a newly hired secretary, sat her in front of a blank computer monitor and took notes while she described how she would prefer to compose documents with a computer. She proceeded to describe a very simple system, which Mr. Tesler then implemented with Mr. Mott.
The Gypsy program offered such innovations as the “cut and paste” analogy for moving blocks of text and the ability to select text by dragging the cursor through it while holding down a mouse button. It also shared with an earlier Xerox editor, Bravo, what became known as “what you see is what you get” printing (or WYSIWYG), a phrase Mr. Tesler used to describe a computer display that mirrored printed output.
And Gypsy brought to fruition the idea of opening a computer file by simply clicking on a screen icon while pointing at it with the mouse cursor. Before that, files had to be opened by typing the file name into a command line.
“At Xerox he pushed a lot for things to be simpler in ways that would broaden the base of users,” said David Liddle, a veteran Silicon Valley venture capitalist who worked with Mr. Tesler at Xerox PARC. “He was always quite focused on users who weren’t also Ph.D.s in computer science.”
Mr. Tesler later joined a small team of researchers run by Alan Kay, a visionary computer scientist who had pioneered the idea of a so-called Dynabook, which would become the inspiration for today’s laptop computers. The group was developing a software environment called Smalltalk, and Mr. Tesler developed a system for searching for software components, which he named the browser.
“He can be hailed as one of the true pioneers of many important aspects of personal computing,” Mr. Kay said.
After attending a demonstration of the Altair, an early hobbyist personal computer, at a Palo Alto hotel in 1975, Mr. Tesler returned to PARC to alert his colleagues to the arrival of low-cost systems. His warnings were largely ignored.
He continued to press for less costly computers. In 1978, with Adele Goldberg and Douglas Fairbairn, he designed a portable machine called NoteTaker, a forerunner of luggable computers like the Osborne, Kaypro and Compaq machines of the early 1980s. But Xerox declined to commercialize the NoteTaker; only a few prototypes were made.
It was Mr. Tesler who gave Mr. Jobs the celebrated demonstration of the Xerox Alto computer and the Smalltalk software system that would come to influence the design of Apple’s Lisa personal computer and then its Macintosh.
Mr. Tesler left Xerox to work for Mr. Jobs at Apple in 1980.
“The questions the Apple people were asking totally blew me away,” Mr. Tesler was quoted as saying in a profile that appeared in IEEE Spectrum, the magazine of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, in 2005. “They were the kind of questions Xerox executives should have been asking but didn’t.”
In addition to helping develop the Lisa and Macintosh, Mr. Tesler founded and ran Apple’s Advanced Technology Group, after which he led the design of the Newton handheld computer, although that proved unsuccessful. The group also created much of the technology that would become the Wi-Fi wireless standard, and Mr. Tesler led an Apple joint venture with two other companies that created Acorn RISC Machine, a partnership intended to provide a microprocessor for the Newton.
Although Apple eventually sold off its holdings in that venture, it would come to dominate the market for the chips that power today’s smartphones. The chip architecture created by the partnership is today the most widely used microprocessor design in the world.
Mr. Tesler left Apple in 1997 for a startup and later went on to work for both Amazon and Yahoo. He left Yahoo in 2008 and spent a year as a product fellow at 23andMe, the genetics information company. He was most recently an independent consultant.
Lawrence Gordon Tesler was born in the Bronx on April 24, 1945, to Isidore and Muriel (Krechman) Tesler. His father was an anesthesiologist.
In 1960, while attending the Bronx High School of Science, Mr. Tesler developed a new method of generating prime numbers. He showed it to one of his teachers, who was impressed. As Mr. Tesler later recalled, he told the teacher that the method was a formula; the teacher responded, “No, it’s not really a formula, it’s an algorithm, and it can be implemented on a computer.”
“Where do you find a computer?” Mr. Tesler asked.
The teacher said he would first get him a programming manual and then figure out where to find a computer.
One day Mr. Tesler was sitting in the school cafeteria reading his manual, which offered instructions on how to program an IBM 650 mainframe in the most low-level, arcane machine programming language.
A student walked up to Mr. Tesler and asked, “What are you doing with that?”
“I’m learning about programming,” Mr. Tesler responded.
The other student alerted Mr. Tesler to a program at Columbia University, which gave high school students programming time. He was able to use a university computer for a half-hour each week, teaching himself to program before he got to college.
He attended Stanford, graduating in 1965 with a degree in mathematics. While there, he became involved in a number of early projects that prefigured personal computing.
Mr. Tesler had early access to a computer known as a LINC when he worked as a student programmer for the Nobel laureate Joshua Lederberg. The LINC, designed by the M.I.T. physicist Wesley A. Clark, is believed by many computer historians to have been the first true personal computer.
Mr. Tesler’s first start-up venture was a programming consulting company located in a shopping mall next to the Stanford campus. He also used a mainframe computer to build a system to permit the student rooting section at Stanford football games to program elaborate card stunts. It was, Mr. Kay said, a forerunner to the ways in which modern graphical displays would be programmed.
In 1969, with two other scientists at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Mr. Tesler created a design for a small computer and proposed it to the calculator company Friden. Although intrigued, the company declined to pursue the idea.
Mr. Tesler left computing for a short while after that and moved to an Oregon commune with his daughter from a short-lived marriage. Lack of work led him back to the Bay Area, where he would join Xerox PARC.
In addition to Ms. Barton, a geophysicist, and his daughter, Lisa Tesler, he is survived by two brothers, Charles and Alan.
At Stanford and afterward, Mr. Tesler was active in both the antiwar movement and the 1960s counterculture. He participated in an alternative school, the Midpeninsula Free University, where he taught classes, including one exclusively for people born under the sign of Taurus. In 1968 he taught a class titled “How to End the IBM Monopoly.”
Years later, as a computer scientist at Xerox, he remembered his activist roots, his former colleague Ms. Goldberg said. The Central Intelligence Agency was a Xerox customer, and when agency employees arrived for a meeting, Mr. Tesler attended wearing a trench coat and a fedora.
When you’re cutting and pasting, dragging the cursor over selected text and performing other common computer tasks, you can thank him.

“what’s going on?” (To Linc from Vero)
The question elicits a conspiratorial smile from Lincoln as she glances at Veronique. The sparkle in her eye should clue the other in that something is about to happen, but exactly what it is will, hopefully, remain a surprise.
The two have been on a little vacation for the past week. Las Vegas, a warm city full of lights and devoid of judgement, seemed the perfect setting for the admittedly insane surprise Lincoln has spent the last year and eighteen days planning. For context, she and Veronique had been dating for one year. Eighteen days into the relationship, Veronique had already numbers for Ver’s remaining family, and called to let them know that she was, in fact, head over heels and planning on marrying the woman who walked beside her now. And so the preparations had begun.
Lincoln is well-aware that these past few months had been stressful for her girlfriend, and she’s also aware that this surprise could make that worse. But if all goes well, hopefully this will make up for the insanity (and at times distance) between them since Linc’s photography took off, and Ver’s fashion line went live. And with another three weeks of vacation ahead of them, she’s crossing her fingers that this isn’t going to blow up in her face.
“If I told you that, it wouldn’t be a surprise,” Lincoln shoots back, pulling Veronique onto an escalator leading up to a banquet hall at the Bellagio. All she’d told Veronique about this whole event was that a makeup artist would arrive at their suite and do Ver’s makeup, and that a dress would be delivered (one Veronique herself had picked out months ago as a joke when walking past a wedding boutique) which Linc currently had in a garment bag slung over her shoulder. And now, the big reveal has to happen.
She can feel her heart hammering in her chest. It’s way more nerve wracking than she’d ever expected. Especially given that Veronique and she had been having such a great trip so far, and Lincoln had fallen even more hopelessly in love with the French woman. If things didn’t work out today…
Walking to the closed door of the hall, Lincoln turns to Veronique, and the conspiratorial smile fades into something more sincere and even slightly nervous. She clears her throat.
“Here goes everything,” Lincoln whispers to herself.
And she gets down on one knee.
Tumblr media
“Veronique,” she starts, already feeling her chest tighten with emotions. “I know we’ve only been together for a year. But this has been… the most enriching, happiest, and most important year of my life. I remember a blind date that started all of this– seeing you sitting there, looking like a goddess.. and proving that you are one every day since then.” She can feel the tears, and has to laugh to push them down. “You are… the kindest, most dedicated, most talented, and most brilliant person I’ve ever met. Every second with you makes me a better person, and every morning when I wake up to you singing in the shower, and every night I spend with you barefoot on a shag carpet drinking wine that’s way too cheap for either of us, makes my life better than it ever was before I met you.
So, I guess what I’m trying to say, is… If I told you I’d planned our wedding, and that it’s waiting right through those doors– et si je vous ai demandé de m'épouser aujourd'hui et de faire en sorte que chaque jour de ma vie soit digne d'être vécu simplement parce que vous y seriez … diriez-vous oui, mon amour?”

What is the most widely used personal computer?
There are various options available if you are seeking a personal computer. They include the Apple Macintosh, the Commodore PET, the LINC, and the Xerox Alto X. Whether you are a company owner, home user, student, or gamer, you may find one to meet your needs.
Apple Inc. created the Macintosh personal computer. A Motorola 68000 CPU powers it. A graphical user interface (GUI) enables users to choose commands, access files, and make menu selections.
The graphical interface approach of the Macintosh was popular with other PC software vendors. This was due to the advantages of the GUI over text-based interfaces.
The popularity of the Macintosh declined after the advent of MS-DOS. Microsoft's Windows became the central personal computer operating system. Macintosh, on the other hand, was able to maintain its market share.
The Macintosh was first advertised on television in 1984. Ridley Scott directed the commercial, which depicted a guy dictating to the masses on a massive screen.
One of the first personal computers was the Commodore PET. Commodore International created it in 1977. Initially, the cassette drive was the sole option to save data on the PET. However, early users quickly discovered a technique to make the entire system perform more quickly.
PET, one of the earliest home computers, was made in the United States. It went for $595. It included a tiny integrated keyboard as well as a monochrome display. Although PET was touted as a low-cost computer, production was restricted. Only 500 units were built in the first year.
The MOS Technology 6502 microprocessor was used to power the PET. This CPU was also found in many of the day's most popular computers.
The Xerox Alto was the first personal computer to include a graphical user interface, sometimes known as a GUI. As so, it was a forerunner to modern computers. Many of Xerox Alto's features are still in use today.
The Alto was created in the early 1970s by Xerox PARC, a research center in Palo Alto, California. This system includes a graphical display, a three-button mouse, and a bespoke central processing unit. It was also one of the first computers to make use of Ethernet.
The Xerox Alto began as a desktop computer. However, a portable personal computer variant was later developed.
The original Alto X is a PC with a graphical display and a mouse. On a 60-line screen, up to 90 characters can be shown. A user can also choose different font sizes and forms for the characters.
The LINC was one of the most exciting discoveries of the mid-1960s. This computer was planned and built by MIT engineers and scientists in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was a little machine that was the first to be commercially produced. The LINC was eventually implemented across the country. The LINC-I, or initial LINC model, was a 12-bit transistorized system with a tiny display and two magnetic tapes for storage.
In the mid-1970s, a more powerful LINC was developed and released. Meanwhile, numerous smaller computers were developed. The Scelbi-8H minicomputer, which was released in 1974, was one of them.
Workstations are personal computers created primarily for the needs of engineers, scientists, and other professionals. They usually feature a lot of RAM and storage, as well as fast CPUs, powerful graphics cards, and high-resolution displays. These computers are frequently used for video editing and graphic design.
In the mid-1980s, there was a surge in the manufacturing of big, powerful personal workstations. These devices had specialized components, proprietary operating systems, and high-priced hardware. Early versions cost approximately $10,000, but by the late 1980s, prices had begun to fall.
Workstations are now available at a variety of pricing points. A low-cost desktop computer can cost less than a fourth of the price of a high-end server. Vendors are increasingly offering off-the-shelf components that may be combined into a bespoke workstation.
A gaming computer is a computer that is solely dedicated to video games. It is widely regarded as a robust system, with features such as a high-end CPU, solid-state storage, and a solid-state graphics card. Your computer can handle both single-player and multiplayer online games. Aside from gaming, it is frequently used for multimedia, video editing, and other purposes.
You'll need more than a few gigabytes of RAM to play a game. At least 8GB of RAM is required for the finest gaming laptops. But it's a small price to pay for a truly immersive gaming experience.
A good gaming PC will include an SSD, and one of them will protect your game from freezing at vital points. You'll also have to spend some money on cooling.

Lawrence Tesler, Pioneer of Personal Computing, Dies at 74
Tumblr media
Lawrence Tesler, a pioneering computer scientist who, in his work at Xerox and with Steve Jobs at Apple, devoted himself to making it easier for users to interact with computers, died on Sunday at his home in Portola Valley, Calif. He was 74.The cause was not known, his wife, Colleen Barton, said. the cause was not known. But at in recent years Mr. Tesler had suffered the effects of an earlier bicycle accident.During his career Mr. Tesler worked at a number of Silicon Valley’s most important companies. But it was as a young researcher at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center in the 1970s that he did his most significant work, helping to develop today’s style of computer interaction based on a graphical desktop metaphor and a mouse.Early in his Xerox career (he began there in 1973), working with another researcher, Tim Mott, Mr. Tesler developed a program known as Gypsy, which did away with the restrictive modes that had made text editing complicated. For example, until Gypsy, most text-editing software had one mode for entering text and another for editing it.Mr. Tesler was passionate about simplifying interaction with computers. At Apple he was responsible for the idea that a computer mouse should have only one button. For many years the license plate on his car read, “NO MODES.”At Xerox PARC, his first breakthrough came when he took a newly hired secretary, sat her in front of a blank computer monitor and took notes while she described how she would prefer to compose documents with a computer. She proceeded to describe a very simple system, which Mr. Tesler then implemented with Mr. Mott. The Gypsy program contained such innovations as the “cut and paste” analogy for moving blocks of text and the ability to select text by dragging the cursor through it while holding down a mouse button. It also shared with an earlier Xerox editor, Bravo, what became known as “what you see is what you get” or WYSIWYG printing, a phrase Mr. Tesler used to describe a computer display that mirrored printed output. And it implemented the idea of opening a computer file by simply clicking on a screen icon while pointing at it with the mouse cursor. Before that, files had to be opened by typing the file name into a command line.“At Xerox he pushed a lot for things to be simpler in ways that would broaden the base of users,” said David Liddle, a veteran Silicon Valley venture capitalist who worked with Mr. Tesler at Xerox PARC. “He was always quite focused on users who weren’t also Ph.D.s in computer science.”Mr. Tesler later joined a small team of researchers run by Alan Kay, a visionary computer scientist who had pioneered the idea of a so-called Dynabook, which would become the inspiration for today’s laptop computers. The group was developing a software environment called Smalltalk, and Mr. Tesler developed a system for searching for software components, which he named the browser.“He can be hailed as one of the true pioneers of many important aspects of personal computing,” Mr. Kay said. After attending a demonstration of the Altair, an early hobbyist personal computer, at a Palo Alto hotel in 1975, Mr. Tesler returned to PARC to alert his colleagues to the arrival of low-cost systems. His warnings were largely ignored. He continued to advocate for less costly computers. In 1978, with Adele Goldberg and Douglas Fairbairn, he designed a portable machine called NoteTaker, a forerunner of luggable computers like the Osborne, Kaypro and Compaq machines of the early 1980s. But Xerox declined to commercialize the NoteTaker; only a few prototypes were made.It was Mr. Tesler who gave Steve Jobs the celebrated demonstration of the Xerox Alto computer and the Smalltalk software system that would come to influence the design of first Apple’s Lisa personal computer and then its Macintosh.Mr. Tesler left Xerox to work for Mr. Jobs at Apple in 1980.“The questions the Apple people were asking totally blew me away,” Mr. Tesler was quoted as saying in a profile that appeared in IEEE Spectrum, the magazine of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, in 2005. “They were the kind of questions Xerox executives should have been asking but didn’t.”In addition to helping develop the Lisa and Macintosh, Mr. Tesler founded and ran the company’s Advanced Technology Group, where he led the design of the Newton hand-held computer, although that proved unsuccessful. The Advanced Technology Group also created much of the technology that would become the Wi-Fi wireless standard, and Mr. Tesler led an Apple joint venture with two other companies that created Acorn RISC Machine, a partnership intended to provide a microprocessor for the Newton.Although Apple would eventually sell off its holdings in that company, it would come to dominate the market for the chips that power today’s smartphones. The chip architecture created by the partnership is today the most widely used microprocessor design in the world.Mr. Tesler left Apple in 1997 for a start-up and later went on to work for both Amazon and Yahoo. He left Yahoo in 2008 and spent a year as a product fellow at 23andMe, the genetics information company. He was most recently an independent consultant.Lawrence Gordon Tesler was born in the Bronx on April 24, 1945, to Isidore and Muriel (Krechman) Tesler. His father was an anesthesiologist. In 1960, while attending the Bronx High School of Science, Mr. Tesler developed a new method of generating prime numbers. He showed it to one of his teachers, who was impressed. As Mr. Tesler later recalled, he told the teacher it was a formula; the teacher responded, “No, it’s not really a formula, it’s an algorithm, and it can be implemented on a computer.”“Where do you find a computer?” Mr. Tesler asked. The teacher said he would get him a programming manual first and then figure out where to find a computer. One day Mr. Tesler was sitting in the school cafeteria reading his manual, which offered instructions on how to program an IBM 650 mainframe in the most low-level, arcane machine programming language.A student walked up to Mr. Tesler and asked, “What are you doing with that?”“I’m learning about programming,” Mr. He had early access to a computer known as a LINC when he worked as a student programmer for the Nobel laureate Joshua Lederberg. The LINC, designed by the M.I.T. physicist Wesley A. Clark, is believed by many computer historians to have been the first true personal computer.Mr. Tesler’s first start-up venture was a programming consulting company located in a mall adjacent to the Stanford campus. He also used a mainframe computer to build a system to permit the Stanford football student rooting section to program elaborate card stunts. It was, Mr. Kay said, a forerunner to the ways in which modern graphical displays would be programmed. In 1969, with two other scientists at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Mr. Tesler designed a small computer and proposed the idea to the calculator company Frieden. Although intrigued, the company declined to pursue the idea.Mr. Tesler left computing for a short while after that and moved to an Oregon commune with his daughter from a short-lived marriage. Lack of work led him back to the Bay Area, where he would eventually join Xerox PARC.In addition to Ms. Barton, a geophysicist, and his daughter, Lisa Tesler, he is survived by two brothers, Charles and Alan.At Stanford and afterward, Mr. Tesler was active in both the antiwar movement and the 1960s counterculture. He was a participant in an alternative school formed around Stanford, the Mid-Peninsula Free University, where he taught several classes, including one exclusively for people born under the sign of Taurus. In 1968 he taught a class titled “How to End the IBM Monopoly.”Years later, as a computer scientist at Xerox, his former colleague Ms. Goldberg said, he remembered his activist roots.
I Can Feel Better, Do U Know Me, Me vs. Me…).

A brand new 18 hole golf course installed with artificial grass greens from LazyLawn has recently opened at Highfields Park in Nottingham
LazyLawn supplied over 1200 square metres of Grass Park Junior, Nylon Pro and Wonder Yarn 26, which won the Which? Best Buy Award in 2016, at Highfields Park Adventure Golf.
Over 1000 people visited the golf course at the launch during the May Bank Holiday weekend.
The golf course has been installed as part of a multi-million pound project to restore Highfields Park. The project will also include a new boating house by Highfields Lake and new croquet lawns for two bowling greens at the park.
The golf course has been designed with local Nottinghamshire themes in mind, including Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest, the City of Caves and Beeston Lake.
Jordan Foster, site manager at Highfields Park Adventure Golf said: “Our first weekend was very successful, with people commenting on the local design of the golf course. Visitors also mentioned how good the quality of the surface is. The golf course will be popular with families for some summer fun.”
Josh Bartlett, project manager for Highfields Park, said: “I have worked on many golf courses with my team. This one in particular was fun to work on because of the local themes design. The location is also fantastic and the project to revamp Highfields Park will help to attract more people to the area.
“LazyLawn is ideal for golf courses because it is resilient and durable under all weather conditions. LazyLawn doesn’t become muddy or damaged in bad weather like natural grass does.”
This LazyLawn project was installed by the LazyLawn Lincs and Notts team. LazyLawn has also been installed in other local areas in Nottinghamshire including Center Parcs.
For more information about LazyLawn in Nottinghamshire, please email [email protected] or call 0843 659 5884.
For special offers and to find out what’s going on at Highfields Park over the summer, please visit the Highfields Park Facebook page: www.facebook.com/HighfieldsParkGolf.
